Olde Hickory Death by Hops

Olde Hickory Death by Hops

Winner of the First Olde Hickory Pro Am competition. Very limited production. Our brew master says:
71lbs of high alpha hops were used to make this limited production beer of only 13 barrels. That’s just over 20 grams of hops used for each pint! DBH was brewed with 2 row barley, Carapils and Crisp Crystal 45 malts and fermented to 7% alc/vol. DBH was hopped with 5 different West Coast hops: Chinook, Columbus, Simcoe, Centennial and Cascade. Additionally, DBH was twice dry hopped with different combinations of these hops. The net result is an amazing aroma of ripe juicy fruit mixed in with a bouquet of spring flowers. DBH was brewed to a level of bitterness of 108 IBU’s, and leaves a lingering bitterness; it is, after all, a Double IPA!

3.5 Bottle @ Saxo tasting. Hazy dark golden with a white head. Aroma is sweet, malty and moderate - fruity and old hops. Flavor is quite sweet and rather bitter. Dry and rather bitter finish. 230719
3.4 Creamy white good mostly lasting head. Dark yellow colour. Moderate malty and hoppy aroma. Moderate bitter flavor. Average moderate bitter finish. Oily palate.
3.4 Bottle. Nice head with good duration. Color is golden. Aroma and taste are fruits, malt, olde hops, caramel and has a long bitter finish.
3.3 Sampled on draft this beer poured an orange color with a large foamy white head that left great lacing. The aroma was sweet with tropical fruit, fruit cocktail and grape. The flavor was bitter with fruity hops, a bit of tropical fruit and grapefruit. Long finish that turns a bit dry. Medium body.
3.6 355ml bottle. Clear, orangey, dark golden to amber colour with average to huge, thick, creamy-fluffy, moderately lasting, minimally lacing, white head. Piney and slightly citrusy, hoppy aroma, notes of resin, coniferes, hints of orange, mandarine, orange zest. Taste is dry, piney hoppy and sweet, caramel malty, notes of resin, hints of tangerine, orange, orange zest, whiffs of lemon; slightly oily texture, smooth and soft palate. Well crafted, classic West Coast IPA.
4.4 Found this on vacation this year in May in NC . Loved it then love it now months later flavor still incredible nice bitterness strong hop presence but easy to drink . Cheers
3.5 Bottled, 355ml from The Grumpy Goat Bottle Shop, Reading, Berks. Hazed amber with white head. Dry and bitter hop notes from the start, resinous along with a bitter orange character, drying on the palate. The body is a slightly fuller roasted biscuity malt, again drying. The whole is a very drinkable hop forward, herby, tangy beer. Pretty decent.
3.5 From tap at BeerTemple, Amsterdam. Very resinous aroma with crystal malt, fruity notes, some orange, caramel, and big pine resin. Sweetish and firmly bitter flavour. Body is medium. Highly resinous in character, some more fruity tones would have carried this further.
3.8 340ml bottle from The Grumpy Goat in Reading. Last beer of 2018. Pours slightly hazy orange with a good number of floaters and a tall white head. Aroma is piney and resiny hops. Taste is piney hops, caramel, grapefruit. Big bitter and dry finish.
3.6 1/12/2018. Bottle shared at the 1st Kesgrave 50/50 bottle share. Pours slightly hazy golden amber with a foamy off-white head. Aroma of hops, citrus, grass and straw. Light sweetness, heavy bitterness. Medium body, oily texture, average to soft carbbonation. Bitter, hop finish.
3.7 355ml bottle. Pours deep gold with a fluffy large white head. Aroma is orange hop candy, somme herbs. Flabor is bitter and aggressive, minimal malt intrusiveness, this is good, why the fuck don't they make it like this anymore? If they just used a bit more dry hops for aroma this would be perfect.
3.7 17th October 2018 3 Johns stoneage lit cave. Keg. Hazy deep gold beer, small cream colour head. Best estimate of appearance by Phonelight in this very dimly lit poob. Smooth palate, fairly dry, decent fine carbonation. Dry malts, sweetish with tangy caramel and bread. Piney hops. Bitter dry citric peel. Orange and grapefruit. Floral cittic peel, slightly sweeter. Light dry finish. Fuck me! This is a proper old school IPA, like the last decade and a half never happened. And that is its charm, unapologetically of days of yore. Long may there be beers like this to remind us where we came from.
3.7 Amber with rich white head. Slight hoppy aroma. Strong hoppy bitterness with some fruity and slightly sweet malty notes. Lasting bitter aftertaste.
3.5 Keg @ Kilder. Pours a misty orange, medium off-white head. Pine and resin on the nose. Continues to taste to form very much an old skool pine, resin, marmalade, citrus IPA character. Flavoursome, but not too exiting nowadays.
3.8 22oz bottle thanks to Toby pours out orange topped with a white head. Nose is orange pine hops resin some caramel sweetness. Taste is more of the nice orange citrus hops a little grapefruit notes and some sweet malts.
3.4 12 oz. bottle pours an orange color with a small white head. Aromas of pine, resin, grapefruit. Medium bodied, very good
3.7 Bottle at Joint Venture pop up in London. Strong piney hop character, plenty of citrus, earthy qualities. Lovely. Some sediment floating around.
2.6 Not my favorite thing I've had from Olde Hickory. This beer pours a hazy copper orange with average foam. The aroma is fairly sedate, but I get some Pine and floral qualities. The flavor is very bitter and kind of acerbic. More of the pine and resinous notes, plus some garlic and a very lean finish.
3.6 5 week old bottle A: Poured an orange gold color with 1" of thick beige foam. Good retention and sheets of lace. Clear but with lots of sediment suspended among active bubbles. S: Nice light mix of caramel, orange and pine. T: Very bitter orange pith and peel blending well with light caramel sweetness and a woody, zesty aftertaste. M: Light body and crisp texture for its strength but finishing very sticky. O: Very tasty and extremely well balanced for the hop bomb that it is. A bit north of my ABV sweet spot but well worth a purchase.
3.9 350ml bottle from alus Celle. Pours clear amber, thick off-white head. Aroma is hoppy, caramelly, piney, fruity. Taste is hoppy, piney, bitter. Medium body, average carbonation. Nice hoppy bitter oldschool IPA.
3.8 Nice hop kick with dominating herbal, pine aspect, grapefruit. Light sweetness with moderate bitterness. Feels clean and refreshing.
3.5 Nice hop bitterness. Hops even swim in the bottom of the glass. Nice bitterness and aftertaste. Hop bomb

3.2 Keg at the bottle shop druid Street. A clear bet burnt orange coloured pour with a lasting beige head. Aroma is sweet chewy toffee, toasted grains, piney hop. Flavour is composed of biscuity malts, burnt toast, singed pine needles. Assertive harsh back of the throat bitterness. Palate is semi sweet, chewy, resinous, moderate carbonation. Ok.
3.6 On tap at The Bottle Shop Bermondsey. Clear deep amber colour lasting white head. Big hoppy aroma. Big west coast hops. Very good I thought. A bit sweet. Pine resin bit of malty wood
