3.6 (750ml bottle 2008 vintage thanks to Exiled) hazy medium brown, soapy edges have khaki-colored bubbles. Nose of licorice, cherry, Belgian yeast, cinnamon, nutmeg. Taste of candi sugar, licorice, anise, metallic, earthy, pipe tobacco, sour cherry as it warms, and a well-hidden alcohol presence. Complex and dry finish, very carbonated.
3.8 Thanks to Exiled for sharing this bottle. 2008 vintage. The beer pours a brown color with a cream-colored head. The aroma is alcohol, tobacco, brown sugar, dark fruit and a lot of licorice. The flavor is a similar, with a few additional notes. In addition to the tobacco, roasted malt, brown sugar and nutmeg, I also get some cayenne pepper and alcohol. A very complex flavor profile that is very enjoyable. Medium mouthfeel and medium carbonation.
3.7 Biggish light brown head. Deep red body. Papery fruity wild berry aroma with toffee and roasty malts notes. Dry-sweetish cocoa and wild berry taste with papery toffee and roasty dusty malts notes. Soft, mild, rounded mouthfeel. Dryish roasty toffee and wild berry aftertaste with dusty oily chocolatey notes. Excellent! Unusually complex, harmonic, and eminently drinkable. (0.75l bottle, Super Spar, Tisvilde Strand.)
3.4 Serving: 70 ml bottle from the Bayside Package Store. It pours a murky reddish dark brown with a half inch of light tan foam. Great head retention. The nose is heady with notes of tart cherries, brown sugar, vinous notes, and Belgian yeast. The flavor has lots of malt sweetness, brown sugar, vanilla, a little cherry cough syrup, and a slight burnt sugar note. Light to medium in body with soft carbonation and sweet, slightly dry finish. What starts as intriguing finishes as overly sweet and a bit much to session. This brew unfortunately is not greater than the sum of it’s parts, but it is certainly drinkable.
3.8 Nut brown body with tanned head. Has nice balance of sweet malt, fruity yeast and some hops. Very good one.
3.2 Aroma of spices and yeast. Murky brown pour with a thin beige head. Flavor of spices, tartness and yeast. The body is light to medium with lively carbonation. Decent.
3.5 750 ml bottle. From København, Denmark. Shared w/ Brandman. Dark amber colour with small off-white head. Malt, spices and bitterish hops in aroma. Sweet malt, spices, balancing hops and sweet aftertaste. Rich and balanced. Good jul brew. Not the best drink choice for summer with temperature +25°C. But next xmas this will be on my table next to turkey (well kinkku to be honest).
3.6 This corked and caged bottled brew from a bottle shop poured a extremely large sized head of foamy finely sized light brown colored bubbles that were mostly lasting and left behind a softly carbonated semi-hazy with floating particulate . The mild aroma was nutmeg malty and cinnamon. The mouth feel was tingly at the start and strongly tingly at the finish. The flavor contained notes of vinous spices roasted malt and hops. Delicious and one I would certainly buy again.
3.6 Bottle from Capone’s that has been aged for 18 months or so. Here we go, hold onto your seats! Pours ruddy muddy Carolina mud brown with big 4f off-khaki head. Nose is tart fruit, funky yeasty cobvwebby esters, Old Aley aroma, malt. Tastes malty, fruity, not as tart as one might expect, with merloty flavors, almosty like an old ale mixed with an aged merlot and tossed in an oaky basement for awhile. Palate is complex, perhaps a tad under-carbonated, but silky smooth, and this is a very nice beer.
3.7 Thanks to Lee for the bottle. Dark chunky brown chestnut pour. Belgian yeasty, tart cherry aroma. Taste is smooth malt sweetness and cherry notes.
3.6 Bottle shared by akevitt. Pours a rather muddy orange-brown body with tan foam head. Nice aroma of wine, dark fruit, cherry, caramel malts, yeast, and a hint of cocoa. Flavor is similar with a nice fruity and caramel sweetness at first, finishing slightly boozy with some spiciness. Smooth mouthfeel and lightly carbonated. Solid and enjoyable to drink.
4.4 Yummmm. Very nice beer. Poured with a fine foamy frothy light tan head that lasts & good lace. Aroma is malty, yeasty, a hint of sour cherry. Flavor’s about the same but set off very well with the body and carbonation which are excellent. Don’t pick up much of the licorice. Finish is a very good bittersweet with a little alcohol.
3.5 THOUGHTS: This might have been a little skunked, but it might also have been the licorice root. This was nice, but nowhere near as good as their Jule Ale. This got a little cloying about halfway through. Rather earthy. Very warming, but something off about the aroma and flavor that bothered me. It was interesting, but not one of my favorites and I’ve had many non Christmas beers that were more Christmasy. TECHNICAL: Bottle. Poured a medium to dark, orangey brown with reddish amber highlights and a large to huge, creamy, off-white head that kept a nice sheet and left excellent lacing. The aroma was moderate to heavy caramel and cocoa; moderate to heavy doughy yeast; apple, cherry, licorice root, cola, spices and a pretty good amount of alcohol. The initial flavor was sweet and slightly acidic; while the finish was heavily to harshly sweet and rather acidic with a fairly long duration. There was caramel malt, raisin, cherry, licorice, yeast, hints of cheap chocolate and instant coffee, more cherry, more yeast, a pretty good amount of spices, cola, a bit of alcohol, metallic hops, molasses, toffee, slight bit of hops and oranges. The medium body was somewhat syrupy and very sticky on the lips and then dry with fizzy carbonation and a dry, light to moderately astringent and moderate to heavily alcoholic finish.
4.0 Pours a rich mahogany color with a tall head the reduces slowly leaving a rather thick, creamy pancake to linger. Nice! Aroma is mild but I smell a bit of coffee and cocoa. Medium nectar with a semi creamy texture with the soft effers and all. A rich malt component lays down some rather complex footwork. A raisiny, coffee beany, bitter cocoay flavor weaves strongly with nuances of plum, honey, and cherry. Theres a mild yet defined hop factor that doesn’t quite block the malty sweetness that ensues. The finish is long a sweet. I wouldn’t say it was spicy.
3.7 Bottle from 07 I think? (mb 08). Pours a creamy opaque tootsie roll brown with a creamy frothy light tan head. Flavor is syrupy sweet rich molasses warming medium spices some light cheesed hops sweet rich syrupy brown sugar lightly fruity with some alcohol and hints of rubber, light pine aftertaste, rich and aged excellently. Medium bodied, fuller with a fluffy carbonation, sticky and viscous. I enjoyed this.
4.3 80 deibel cork pop, but fortunately no gusher. Very dark maroon color, medium tan fine bubble head that lasts forever; delicate lacing. Aroma of dark fruits and caramel, and evident alcohol. Flavor begins with ripe cherries and dates, and a bit of nutmeg. Lots of malt. Nicely complex and interesting. Excellent body. Delicious winter brew.
3.8 Dark ruby brown color with a tall frothy tan head. Aroma of dark fruit, yeast and licorice. Tastes primarily of dark fruit-cherry with some sourness, licorice, and yeast. Just a touch of bitterness mixes easily with the sweetness. Quite enjoyable.
3.5 Clear mahogany, long lasting rich creamy tan head, excellent lacing.
Aroma is yeasty, some licorice, cherries, light alcohol, lots of dark fruits.
Flavour is of dark fruits, lots of licorice, yeast, alcohol is noticable at times, sweetness starts to come through.
Yeasty mouth, med/light body, high carb.
Finishes with lots of liquorice, yeast, sweet with some alcohol.
It’s okay but it is hurting because of the lack of body. The spices are nice but it left me wanting more.
750ml bottle purchased at Premier Gourmet in Buffalo, New York.
Opened on August 15, 2009.
No date.
3.4 Cork hit the ceiling as the bottle opened. Hazy deep orange body topped by a huge brown head. Bubble gum on the nose. Sweet and sour in the mouth with a soft syrupy feel. Medium to full body. (Bottle, courtesy of tarjei 12.12.2009)
3.1 Good beer, I like. I found the taste of orange, nuts, caramel and other good christmas tasting. The color was russet, really nice. I could drink this beer each year at christmas.
3.7 28-NOV-2009, bottle @home. Brown, nice light brown head. Weak nose, belgian inspired. Very creamy, nice carbonation. Brown sugar, roasted, not strong although it is 9,5%. First time I tasted this two years ago, I was much more impressed. Well, it is still a very nice beer.
3.4 From 2007 on tap at Ølbaren. Pours hazy and reddish/brown with a creamy tan head. Aroma is sweet and hoppy with malty notes. Flavour is noway near my expectations - smokey, hoppy and a little caramel sweet with dark fruits in the back. It ends in a bitter sweet after taste.
2.3 Taste of left over milk after Kellogs Frosties ! Malt, bitter & very sweet.
3.7 750ml corked bottle and served in my Big Karmeliet glass: Pours a hazy chestnut brown hue topped by a large rocky light beige head which left clinging lacework upon the glassware. The aroma smells like the holidays with rich cherry, fig, and fruitcake. Hint of cardamom, ginger, anise blend with roasted and toffee malts. Even a quick hint of herbal hops and earthy salty notes as well on the nose. The taste pretty accurately reflected the aromas with a mix of spice overlaid rich sweet malts and a mild fruity background. There is a slightly sea salt note around the edges before a pop of alcohol comes forth to cleanse the palate. Unfortunately the alcohol is too brash for the framework of the beer and begins to wear the palate down long before the bottle (or even glass) is near completion. The mouth feel is lively enough and counteracts a sticky medium to full-bodied nature of the brew. Perhaps aging would calm down the effects of the alcohol but I have my doubts. Still, all in all a solid brew that meets my expections of a strong holiday ale.
3.1 In short: A very sweet, toasted and slightly spicy ale. Ok for what it is. How: Bottle. Age unknown but probably recent. Tasting session with Montreal crew. The look: Cloudy brown body topped by a small beige head In long: Nose is spicy and toasted. Taste sweet, spicy, slightly fruity and kind of here and there. Crusty brownies, some spices, strange berry-like fruitiness, brown sugar, caramel. Something astringent that I cannot word. I cannot say it wasn’t good, it was pretty decent, but it is another of those “different” beer where it’s just a bunch of flavour elements that do not necessarily complement each other. Overall sensation like an incomplete beer, a work in progress. Not bad but it felt as amateurish and also as spicy as the movie Six Degrees Of Penetration.
3.3 Pours cloudy brown with a large beige head. Aroma is malt, caramel, cherry, fruit. Flavour is sweet caramel, fruity, cherry. Sour aftertaste.
4.1 Bottle at Yourdarklord’s tasting. Pours a nice deep reddish amber with nice retentive light tan head. Aroma of cherry juice and licorice. Medium to full bodied with a nice earthy mouthfeel. Flavor of sweet caramel malts, cherry, licorice, all nicely melded. Finish has some cinnamon and clove. Nice.
3.2 My Bottom Line: Christmas spices, fruity yeast and leafy hops conclude in a bitter and tart profile for a decent but rather perplexing Belgian-style Strong Ale. Further Personal Perceptions: -A creamy tower of foam bobs atop the cloudy reddish-brown. -In the end, the tartness was a little too strange for me in this context. -The soft effervescence makes for some easy drinking despite the beer’s potency. -I’m not sure this flavor profile was all that cohesive. Bottle.
(Rating #2647)
3.9 750 ml bottle. Pours a murky brown with a huge pillowy off white head that retains well and laces the glass some. The aroma is molasses, dark fruits (fig) and some fruitcake spices with some alcohol and hops in the background. The flavor is sweet sugary malts with some fruit (cherries?). In the finish it has a bit of alcohol and some bittering hops to balance. The mouthfeel is medium to full bodied with a good carbonation level. Overall, a nice brew. It’s an interesting blend that comes out well balanced. The alcohol is slightly too much up front for my tastes.
