Ølfabrikken ØL (Russian Imperial Chocolate Stout)

Ølfabrikken ØL (Russian Imperial Chocolate Stout)

In the beginning of 2006 the people behind Denmark's leading beer bar "Ølbaren", the leading beer shop "Ølbutikken" and Ølfabrikken sat down together to plan a beer that was to be only served from tap at Ølbaren and only sold in bottles from Ølbutikken. After a night of drinking it ended up with a massive Russian Imperial Chocolate Stout using ingredients from four continents. South american Cocoa, Asian coffee, North american hops and European malts. Ølfabrikken ØL is, of course, unpasteurized, unfiltered and cask conditioned like all of our beers. Introduced at 'Københavnske Øldage 2006'.

4.5 Thecheeseman!!!!!!!!!!!! Black pour. Tan head. Loads of chocolate, roast and coffee with hints of plastic. Flavor is roasty, somewhat bitter and lots of coffee and cocoa. Damn this was good!
4.1 October ’09 O-Town Throwdown, wow!!! cheeseman delivers yet another amazing beer! #270 batch, pours black, cloudy with beige head. Aroma is full on chocolate, malts, some hints of smoke and pepper. Flavor, deep chocolate palate, followed by roasted malts, not overly bitter, thick chocolate mouthfeel, molasses, slushy and yeasty.
4.5 Cheeseman fuckin bringin it! This beer was right up my alley. Poured dark brown/black, with a smallish light brown head. Smelled of huge hershey’s chocolate, my mouth instantly watered. Milky and creamy dark malts helped balance a little but this baby was all chocolate. The flavor was much the same, it was really a hersheys chooclate beer. being a hug chocolat nut, i loved every minute of it. Very similar to ST Choklat in my opinion. Sweet, sticky finish left me wanting more. Money in the bank!
4.3 Swingtop bottle, courtesy Cheeseman. At least 2 years old, probably more. The pour yields a nearly opaque, dark mahogany brown body that shows almost black. A small, foamy, dark tan head leaves some dense brown staining on the glass, along with some minimal spotting. The aroma is based in ultra rich dark and milk chocolates, smooth and creamy as can be, with notes of scorched caramel, hints of roast, and some residual, earthy hoppiness. Flavors are just as decadent and smooth, again showing luxurious chocolate, soft roast, and just a faint touch of lactose. The remaining hops lend near perfect balance to the sweet chocolate. A big, creamy body is velvety, each sip begging the next, while a hint of residual grassiness comes through on the finish. Excellent stuff. This not only held up well over time, it is one of the best chocolate stouts I’ve ever had.
4.1 Tasted at Otown Throwdown courtesy Cheesman. Black pour with lots of dark yellow lacing. Roasted grain, bourbon, vanilla, chocolate aroma. Thick chewy roasted, bourbon, dark fruit taste. Awesome.
4.2 Courtesy ChzMan. Ugly brown/black. Tan carbonation. Awesome nose- roasty bittersweet, dark chocolate, black pepper, earth. Same flavors, great, rich imperial with some nice spice.
4.0 Old notes from DØE Valby 07. Pours black with a brown head. Aroma is roasted malt, chocolate and coffee. Flavour is roasted malt, chocolate and coffee.

4.1 Bottle shared by StFun – thanks Josh! Pours midnight black with a thin tan head. The nose is dark fruit, roasted malt, Redman tobacco and chocolate. The taste is cocoa, ripe dark fruit, licorice, baker’s chocolate and roasty malt. Medium creamy mouthfeel. Very good. Reminds me a little of Iron Hill’s IS, but with more age and complexity. Thanks again for the opportunity to try this Josh!
4.2 Bottle shared by Josh. Thanks Josh! Pours an oily pitch black with slight tan head. Wow. I smell smoke, tobacco, coffee, chocolate, burnt malt, and some dark fruit. Viscous mouthfeel. Flavor follows the nose and finishes with a licorice chocolate semi sweetness that makes me crave more. Just a fantastic beer and has aged very very well. Thanks again!
4.4 Bottle, #270. A black beer with a finger-thick, diminishing tan head. Quite oily pour. Smoke, burnt malts, tar, coffee, chocolate, licorice and some alcohol in the aroma. Really lovely, and the flavor continues in the same way. Quite sweet in the mouth, warming and full-bodied, with burnt malts, tar, coffee, chocolate and some licorice. Alcohol and roasted malt-bitterness in the finish. Dangerously easy to drink and just wonderful, even though it’s been cellared for quite some time. It’s a damn shame this beer’s gone. 090619
4.4 Bottle with a big thanks to Marsiblursi. Pours black with a minimal head. Smells highly of dark fruit , cocoa and vanilla. Taste is chocolatey, with notes of vanilla, light wood, and dark fruits. Palate is creamy smooth and all around good.
4.0 Bottle graciously shared by coyotehunter. Pours an imperial stout brown with minimal head. Aromas are heavy with ripe, dark fruit and roasted malt. A little bit of what I’d call oxidation is present, but it isn’t bad and doesn’t interfere much. Flavor has a lot of wood and fruit to it, with cocoa and licorice.
4.1 Bottle 50 cl from the cellar. Pours a completely black with a nice dark nutbrown head that fades quickly though. The aroma is massive and packed with notes of malts, smoke, dry fruits, raisins, a little acid and burned wood. The mouthfeel is creamy and agressive with pickin alcohol-notes. There is chocolate and coffee notes with a great malts-flavour. The finish is balanced between sweetness and bitterness. Very nice
4.5 Bottle. Black colour with a tan head. Aroma is coffee, hop, smoked, chocolate. Flavour is coffee, hop, smoked, chocolate, licirice. Full bodied world class beer.
4.1 Sampled at DØE Beerfestival 2007, Valby. Pours a pitch black beer with a small creamy lightbrown head. The aroma is sweet, coffee, chocolate and some nutty. The flavor is chocolate, coffee and some bitterness. The palate is sweet and has some notes of alcohol. Overall a great beer.
3.8 Bottle acquired via trade with the Danish beer godess, Maria. Love the pop-top and label. Pours black with a reddish brown head that quickly dissipates. Smells of dirt and faint chocolate syrup. Has a milky lychee sort of texture. Tastes very earthy with subtle notes of cocoa and burnt marshmallow. Lacks the sweetness that I was anticipating from the description.
3.9 Bottle from nbutler11. May he remember this beer for always. Allegedly pours deep auburn and black; certainly smells burnt, with Danish cocoa dirt aroma. Flavor features the same with heavy appleseed, but the dark chocolate comes out more - while subdued, I think it lends an unmistakable creaminess. Coffee if ever present was the big loser with time. A pretty unusual beer.
3.7 Rating #1000. Whoo! I have been waiting to try this beer for quite awhile now. Pours black with no head at first, followed by a slow rising light tan head. Aroma of sweet roasted malt, toffee, nougat, and chocolate cookie malt. Flavor of bitter chocolate and roasted malt. Some metallic notes. This was alright, but the flavors seemed a little dulled. Too bad I won’t get to try this a little fresher. 8/4/7/4/14 (3.7/5)
3.9 Rating.Number.One.Thousand. Maybe I’m a bit too excited about that. Bottle, huge thanks to andersand. Lovely aroma of gently roasted, sweet malt, massive quantities of sweet/semi-sweet chocolate, a hint of espresso, reminds me a lot of Olfabrikken Porter with an extra dose of chocolate. In the mouth the beer unfortunately seems to show some signs of its age with a diminished roastedness and instead an odd acidic note. That said, there is also a nice raspberry note and a good deal of chocolate, much more bitter than in the aroma. Some smoky/peaty notes also become more apparent as the beer warms. Would have loved to try this with a little less age on it since I tend to prefer things that way, but still a more than admirable selection for the my thousandth rating.
4.0 Slick boddied, chocolatey russian IS with Ölfabrikkens old trademark lactal notes also found in the bottled porter. After some time this brew is extremely vinous, full of berries and mild chocolate notes. Lovely stuff, bye bye.
4.0 Black in colour with a very thin beige head, light lacing. The aroma is quite sweet with white sugar, lots of chocolate, roast and espresso. The flavour is roasty with quite a bit of chocolate, light hops now and then, creamy, some alcohol, lightly bitter. Smooth mouthfeel, medium body, mild carbonation. Finishes lingering, bitter and warm. Its good, rather chalky at times. Good smoke. I personally don’t see this improving any further. 500ml bottle obtained in a trade with MPA, thanks Mads. Opened on October 3, 2008. Batch 270, Best before March 1, 2012.
3.8 Bottle. Thanks to Marsiblursi. Black colour with a brown head. Aroma: roastiness, coffee, cocoa, light smoke, saltiness. Taste: roasted malt, coffee, cocoa, saltiness, tar, a bit of sourishness, sticky but not very sweet. Dry roasted finish.
3.9 Bottle. Chocolate, coffee, prune, vanilla and tobacco aroma. Opaque black, golden brown layer. Enters on a tart roasted note, dark chocolate, broad coffee-horizon, salty, licorice, light metallic clay notes, lime, grassy and pine notes detectable. Medium body, light carbonation, lacks a little bite by now. Coffee and cigars retronasal .
4.1 Blind tasting. Smokey aroma with boozy heat. Fluffy brown head, slight oily sheen. Minimal lacing. Hints of currents with dark chocolate. Oily bitter chocolate palate and aftertaste.
4.0 Bügelverschlußflasche. Pours like oil, literally black with a small, but stable tanned head. Solid nose of liquorice, leather, dried fruits, roasted malt and cacao. Very solid dry bitter flavour, medium to full bodied. Liquorice and tobacco in the dry bitter finish, cacao in the aftertaste. Very complex, very fine danish brew.........
4.0 Bottle. Black body small brown head. Aroma is coffee and chocolate. Taste is also coffee, chocolate, tar and roasted malt. Nice.
3.0 Flaske. Kulsort øl med et meget lille skumhoved. Duft af kaffe og chokolade med et lille hint af metal. Dette hint bliver kæmpestort i smagen, der slutter meget metalisk bitter. Ikke særlig god.
4.0 Black colored with medium sized beige head. Strong roastiness and coffee dominates this aroma with vanilla, dry cocoa, licorice also with mild alcohol. Hops also finely present. Near full bodied. Flavor is also rich with roastiness and coffee, vinous and licorice flavor also here. Somehow biting aftertaste with hops, still licorice lasting here long. Very vinous and safty palate.
3.1 Bottle (50 cl) from Ølbutikken. Black with a small head. A bit sugary roasted malt aroma with coffee, dark chocolate, liquorice, and gun powder. Medium bodied and smooth. A disharmonic mix of salt, sweet, and bitter flavours. A huge disappointment, their porter is so much better.
