Ølfabrikken Porter

Ølfabrikken Porter

Editor’s note: Has also been brewed at Bryggeriet S.C. Fuglsang and Nøgne Ø in Grimstad, Norway

Introduced at ’Fynske Øldage’ 2005.

English: A dark and rich porter inspired by the Baltic porters traditionally made in Scandinavia. Roasted without being burned or bitter, with the flavor dominated by dried fruits and vinous notes. High amounts of residual sugars and a fruity aroma makes this beer the perfect companion for chocolate desserts, if served lightly chilled.
Brewed on Maris Otter ale malt, British Brown Malt, chocolate malt, roasted barley, two types of caramel malt and brown sugar.

4.2 500 ml bottle - pours eep brown with a fine dark beige head. Deep aroma of ristretto coffee. Medium body with nice bitter notes supporting the roasted malty flavours, dark chocolate. Very nice porter, balanvcing on the edge with a refined imperial stout!
3.9 500ml bottle from Kamiel (one of many special treats). Dark brown with a nice mocha head that bubbles up and then fades to a nice film across the glass. Smokey, chocolate, coffee grinds, roasted malts, hints of vanilla, bit of tannin. Moderate body and carbonation, a nicely balanced beer that hints at sweetness but has some underlying coffee bitterness and roasted malts that even things out, becomes slightly dry, easy to drink, smooth, one of the best regular porters I have had. Thanks K!
4.1 Bottle: Batch 306: BB 01/04/10: Original swing top bottle, nit sure who brought me this one... (Got 3 bottles from 3 differet people, or was it two....) Medium sized mocha coffee brown foamy head on top of black colored beer. Aromas of garbage bag, earth, walnut, plastic tint, some rotten fruit and a light chocolate tint. Flavours of chocolate, earth, hazlenuts, malts, cacoa, toast, some dried leaves, mocha, bitters, creamy coffee with coffee milk tints, some smoke and peated malts, grainy/nutty bitter and some dry tones. Aftertaste is a dry mix of bitters, chocolate, nuts, malt toast and some grains. Low carbo, creamy oily close to silky mouthfeel, full body and a light oily texture. Complex beer, just over the top? Still very good stuff!
4.2 Oily black body with airy tan head. Rich earthy aroma, cacao, some nuts. Taste adds some nutmeg and other spicy flavours. Slight metallic twange. Overal, a very well balanced beer with some unique, subtle flavours for the style
3.9 Bottle thanks to the Dood! Pours dark brown with a light brown head that is thin but remains throughout the beer. Aroma has nice deep roasted malts with some dark grains and a bit of dryness. Flavor has rich roasted malts and dark grains with a touch of bitter chocolate and dryness.
3.8 9/VIII/13 - 50cl BOTTLE @ De Hopduvel - BB: 25/IV/13 (that’s about just in time, in my books) (2013-703) Thanks to Bobochamp for sharing the bottle! Clear deep brown beer, irregular creamy small beige to brown head, bit adhesive, little stable. Aroma: lots of acaramel, alcohol, mocha, bit smoky, bit of dried fruits, cocoa powder, little dusty, coffee powder. MF: soft carbon, full body, bit oily texture. Taste: surprisingly sourish start, lots of coffee, cocoa powder, some caramel, sour red berries. Aftertaste: caramel, coffee, some citrus, hints of vanilla and some smoke, cooca powder, more coffee, dry hop bitterness and burnt toast in the end.
3.8 50cl, retired Danish brew, thx alot to KingCecil!, complex dry Porter, roasted/malty and slightly spicy/bitter, very balanced, hazy, small head, very good and smooth brew, ’This sample aged very well!’
4.0 May 2010. From bottle. Dark roasted malt, hops, chocolate and caramel aromas. Color is very dark brown to almost black. Thick sugary flavors with some licorice showing through on the finish.
3.5 I must have had a bad bottle because this Porter didn;t wow me like it wowed others. In fact, I thought it was average at best as far as beer goes, and below average for a porter. The pour is nice dark brown (I matched it against some coal I have and it certainly failed to be jet black) with a brown head. The aroma was weak chocolate, weak coffee, and noticeable alcohol (a no-no in a 7.5% beer). Flavour is all over the place, a little coffee, a little chocolate, a little licorice, and a little vanilla, but nothing stood out as being supreme.
4.3 Ancient review, had this backlogged gem with Annie and Dad in August of 2010. Poured pitch black with medium sized beige head. Aromas were caramel, smoke, brown sugar, dark chocolate, honey and creamy malt. Flavor was most of the same with dark fruit and chocolate roast coming out. Body was medium to full. One of the best.
4.1 Bottle (which has crossed the Atlantic twice), shared @Bruces. It pours dark brown with a medium tan head. The nose is earth, roasted malt, caramel, toast, bubblegum, faint smoke and coffee. The taste is soft, roasty, smooth, ashy, salted caramel, toast, touch of oxidation, umami aspect, cocoa powder and earth with a dry, roasty finish. Medium-full body and fine carbonation. Smooth, well balanced and very drinkable indeed. Great stuff.
4.3 Aroma: Caramel, chocolate, coffee, liquorice and roasty malt. Also some hops is hiding in there and is most easily recognized just after pouring. Appearance: Dark brown/black color with a beautiful frothy, tanned head, which I’d wish lasted just a bit longer to enjoy :-) Taste: medium to heavy sweetness, lightly bitter, and a little salty. I don’t think it’s going too sweet in spite of it’s weighty sweetness. Palate: medium body, something in-between slick and thick. Average carbonation and a short bitter but long, salty and chocolate-like finish. Nice! A delicate beer to enjoy on it’s own or with some dessert like chocolate or ice cream.
4.0 Black beer with a tan head and pretty thick lacing. Smells pretty fresh and bitter with coffee and hoppy bitterness. A hidden dark chocolate as well. Taste is great; Chocolaty malts, burned sugar, roasted coffee and again this bitterness from the hops.. I think i will pick one for aging, since the thickness in the palate would suit some aging pretty well. Good stuff!
4.1 Bottle @ Bruce’s. Cheers to Paul for bringing this along. The pour’s deep brown with no head whatsoever. The aroma’s of sweet raisin, some chocolate. Fruit & nut bar. Some spicy yule log, cocoa. Rich, rustic nose. The taste is very rich cocoa, umami and hints of marmite, roasted coffee. A bit of earthy bitter chocolate. Just a hint of oxidization. Medium body, supple and smooth. Overall, pretty damn excellent stuff.
3.3 Bottle from Puddintane. Think it’s from 09/2007? Pours viscous black with no head. Light brown lacing. Small aroma of mostly just roasted malts, a little coffee and chocolate. Taste is somewhat oxidized dark roasted malts, bittersweet chocolate. Good amount of brown sugar. Probably better when fresh.
4.2 Bottle at Bruce’s, London - big thanks to Paul. Pours thick, black-brown with a dense, beige cream head. Some milk chocolate in the nose, hints of burnt wood and hard alcohol out. Medium to big sweet flavor, good and rich bitter earth, dark cocoa, strong roast, bittersweet cocoa. Full bodied with fine, creamy carbonation. Mellow warmth to finish, gritty chocolate, earth, bit of milk chocolate, light roast. Damn tasty.
4.3 Bouteille 500ml.
4.2 Booom, proooff, baaang. A bomb of flavour just exploded in my mouth. Pour nearly pitch black, with a small tan head. Aroma of licorice, oatmeal, roasted malts, plenty of dark - and milkey chocolate, slight coffee, slight dirt n’ leather. The taste is somewhat salty(?) upfront, with a nice dose of bitterness at the end. Medium body, with a semi-flat carbonation. Quite complex, and really enjoyable.
4.3 Draught. Originally rated on 20100220. Pours pitch black color with a medium sized beige head. Aroma of dark roasted malts, cocoa, coffee notes and caramel. Flavor of cocoa, coffee, roasted malts and some chocolate. Excellent.
4.1 Poured from a 22 ounce bottle. Pours a dense brown with not muchf head. Aroma is wood, vanilla, cherry, chocolate, prunes. Taste is sweet, mildly fruity, some light chocolate, roasty finish.
4.1 Draught @ St. Urho’s Pub. Rated on 20.02.2010 Aroma has roasted notes, very dark chocolate and salty licorice. Flavour is rather roasted with some sweetish malty notes, dark chocolate and slightly salty licorice. Feels slightly sour on some sips. A very nice porter which has just the right level of roastiness.
3.0 Dark oily black with a dark beige head. The aroma coffee and malt. The taste is coffee and bitter chocolate
4.0 14/12/2012 on tap @ GEIB (2008 Vintage). Nera, impenetrabile, schiuma color beige-cappuccino, abbondante e incredibilmente persistente.
4.2 Bottle. Really liked this porter. Got it from a bottle shop in ME a few years back. Wish my notes were more detailed.
4.4 22 oz bottle pours black with a tan head. Aroma of roasted malts, coffee, chocolate and a hint of wood. Taste is coffee, malt and a hint of cocoa .
3.4 July 10th, 2010 - I’d have to look at my records, but the Olfabrikken Porter might mark my first Danish, and Scandinavian brew. This is a pity, too, because it is a part of the world I admire greatly, and I desperately want their excellence in government administration and dairy products to extend to their brewing prowess. The porter seemed a good place to start. Right from the opening of the bottle it demonstrated it’s pride and fervor - the first time I thought a beer might be made from carnivorous ingredients. Little to no head appears, allowing a deep, thick vent of aroma to hit my nose all at once. Steak. Steak steak steak. The aroma is redolent with grilled steak and seasonings, with some sweet afterthoughts too - raisin, fig and all-spice. Almost as if cognizant of its sugared vitiation, the flavor reveals that the dark fruits have been relegated entirely to the aftertaste, leaving the steak and grilled meat flavor to dominate the flavor profile. And despite the overall aroma and flavor profile, the porter isn’t oily or dark or velvety but tastes discordantly shallow - a symptom of being brewed as a porter and not a stout, no doubt. My canines are well sharpened and always prepared for a small part of animal to chew, but somewhere between the dominance of those steak flavors and the palate, I find some strange and even off putting sensations in this beer. Still, it receives my token SKALLL!
4.1 Thanks to fonefan for this in trade. Pours a pretty solid black with a chocolate brown head. Aroma is coffee, chocolate, roasted hazelnuts and Brazil nuts. Creamy mouthfeel, smooth on the palate with a nutty finish. Taste is dark chocolate, soy sauce, nuts, hint of coffee and dark fruits.
4.3 Pour a dark oily black with a dark beige head. The nose is cocoa powder, wood, booze, figs, hazelnuts and chocolate cake. The pallet is cocoa powder, hazelnuts, cake, bitter chocolate, a bit of a woodiness and has a smooth finish with cocoa, and bit sweet chocolate.
4.4 One of the first bottles I ever bought at Barley wine in Copenhagen in 2006. Label with a typewriter font, black on with. Very appealing. Pours black beer with a nice brown head. The aroma is sweet roasted combined with notes of caramel and hints of alcohol. A very robust, sweet, vinous and fruity porter with lots of coffee and chocolate tones as well as wood, and nuts and hints of tar. The mouthfeel is very creamy and slightly sticky. One of the beers the got me stuck.
3.9 Bottle thanks to Papsoe. Not sure on a vintage. It had 2005 and 2007 stickers on it but I couldn’t read anything else on the label. Nothing much to say here except that this is a damn solid porter. Great in every way and not let down at all
