Ølfabrikken Rug IPA

Ølfabrikken Rug IPA

This is our interpretation of the hoppiest of all beers, as it was served to the British troops in the eighteenth century. We have chosen to give this a Danish attitude with the addition of large amounts of malted rye. Together with excessive quantities of American hops this yields a complex and intensely bitter ale with a spicy bouquet and flavor. Enjoy it with spicy dishes, where the bitterness will complement the flavors. Ølfabrikken Rug IPA is, of course, unpasteurized, unfiltered and bottle conditioned like all of our beers.

3.7 On tap at Plan B. Pours dark golden with decent sized head. Aroma is very piney with some fruitiness as well. Get some malty sweetness in the aroma when it warms up. Taste is very hoppy, more pine trees with some subtle malt background. Average palate with a clean bitter finish. Very solid IPA and very drinkable too.
4.1 Bottle at Tre Små Rum, Gothenburg. dark orange color with a white head. Aroma: Hoppy and sweet, grassy, spicy, citrus, pine, sweet fruit. Flavor: Floral and spicy hops, grass, citrus, strawberries, elderberries and pine. A very nice and different IPA.
3.8 Bottle at 3 små rum Gøteborg: Thanks to Reza. Red hazy colour, creamy head. Aroma of fruits flowers and lot og hops. Medium body nice fruity/hopy medium finish.
3.5 Hazy orange with a medium offwhite head. Hoppy and fruity notes. Medium body witth a dry, hoppy finish.
4.1 A fantastic IPA with a very complex nose of flowery and spicy hops and rye. The flavour is and adventure: Spicy hops, peach, lemon and classic c-hops mingle over a very intense ryeish malt backbone. Intense bitterness. Very nice beer!
2.7 IPA har jeg det svært med og uanset om det er rug eller ej så er det stadig for humlet til mig.
3.7 Bottle. Pours an orange-brown, a bit murky, with a beige head. Quite small now. Piney, citrusy nose with a good malty sweetness. Maybe a bit on the hoppy side, but it’s enough malt to prevent it from being one-dimentional. Full-bodied with flavors of pine, resin, citrus, sugar, malt, a little roasted note and beefstock. Really bitter. Long hoppy finish with lots of resin and citrus. The citrus is mostly grapefruit. Sure a good one, but I fear it might be retired by the new owners. That would be a shame. Rating: 7-4-7-4-15-3.7. (080323) Bottle, from trade with Pinball. Thx a lot, I really wanted to have it again. It’s a hazy, slightly cloudy dark orange-golden beer with a finger-thick off-white to beige head that lasts. Lacings. Malty-sweet on the nose, giving lots of room for the hops. Even though it’s seven months past BB-date, there’s a good dash of piney, citrusy hops in it. Some black tea as well. Quite sweet flavor, full-bodied and wisely carbonated. Maybe a bit on the sweet side, almost sugary, with caramel and some beef-stock. Citrus, pine-cones and some tea too. It lacks a bit on the bitterness, but I choose to blaim that on it’s age. Fruity, sugary and slightly bitter finish. Very flavorful, dangerously easy to drink, and unfortunately not brewed anymore. (090804)
3.8 Bottle 50cl. Deeb amber clear body with a large dense offwhite head. Fruit, citrus, rye malt, and lots of hops in the nose. Sweet rye flavour and malty spices, with a little alcohol and bittherness in the finish. Great beer!
3.9 Small offwhite head. Hazy amber body. Intense tropical fruit aroma and firm rye malt aroma, very harmonic. Notes of flowers, resin, and honey. Intense sweet-and-dry resin and honey and rye malt taste with roasty tropical fruit notes. Long dry, malty, fruity aftertaste with a powerful rye character. Notes of straw. Faint alcohol taste, and some alcohol heat. Leaves sticky sugar on the lips. Excellent marriage of rye malts and hops. (0.5l bottle at Bishop’s Arms, Göteborg. Brewed 5. jan ’08.)
3.9 ambrata buona schiuma sentori netti di luppoli in bocca il luppolo annulla tutto il resto una spremuta di luppolo
4.7 Amber, creamy head. Grande aroma of blood orange, metal, grape. The flavour harbours a tremendous clash of bitter citrus and sugarsweet perfume. It finishes with a bit of alcohol. To me this beer is just amazing.
3.7 Drauhgt at Cockney Pub. Average size white creamy head thats mostly diminishing. Very cloudy orange/yellow body. Aroma of grain and hay, hoppy flowers. Full body with a creamy texture, average/soft carbonation. A very well balanced beer with a nice bitter-sweet flavor.
3.3 [Drauhgt @ Lord Nelson] hazy amber with tiny beige head. Hoppy aroma with grapefruit notes. Hoppy and fruity flavor with caramel notes that leads to a bitter finish.
4.8 My favorite ipa - Full of malty spices, intense aroma an a benchmark hoppy flavour. My heart is full of sorrow for the heroic brewer who crafted this masterpiece but now has lost his brewery!
4.2 Draught at Bishops Arms, V Hamngatan, Göteborg, Sweden. Hazy mahogny/amber with a small off-white head. Caramelly malt, floral and piney hops with notes of apricot and peaches. Medium bodied with creamy mouthfeel. Very well balanced with a long bitter finish.
3.9 (Draught at Bishops Arms, V Hamng, Göteborg)Shady orange to brown color, small white head. Sweet and very hoppy citrus taste, really nice. Hoppy, citrus and a tad bit acidic scent. Smooth mouthfeel, high bitterness. I like!
4.5 Crowned bottle. Copper color with slight turbidy, like a bottle conditioned IPA although I don’t know if it’s bottle conditioned. Great head retention and lacing. Big citrus aroma with highlights of grapefruit, lemon, pine and some spiciness. The flavor is the same with richness and complexity. The finish is hoppy but refreshing and does not linger too long. Nice job Danes!
4.1 Hazy, amber. Rye brings a nice softness to the beer. Great hop performance - nicely rounded with good sweetness. (Tasted at the "BASMOF Nytårskur 07/08 12-01-2008)
4.2 Bottled. A cloudy dark amber beer with a huge, persistent and creamy beige head. Nice aroma dominated by the hops. There are mainly notes of pine needles, but also citrussy, flowers and caramel malt notes. The flavor is also very hoppy, with only some malt and then the rich hopping, with pine needles and grapefruit. Some rye too. In both falvor and finish the bitterness is very high and persistent. Medium body, average carbonation, long finish. I like both India Pale Ales and Olfabrikken, but this is an outstanding stuff.
3.8 Tap at Plan B, Copenhagen: Slightly hazy amber with a regular off-white head. An inviting cascade dominant aroma with a touch of what I presume is rye ’porrigeiness’. Morish yet curious spicy, nutty, sweet malt flavour that is quickly balanced by the resiny hop flavours - orange herbs - and a fab resin aftertaste. I really liked this one!
4.0 50 cl bottle, from Ølkonsortiet in Aalborg. Brown color, big off-white head. Very hoppy, floral and fruity. Very bitterdry finish. The way I like it.
4.4 Hazy red/amber look with a fast disappearing amber head. Rich and complex hob aroma with strong notes of pine and grapefruit, with some "sweeter" elderflower notes in the background. Flavor is also dominated by powerfull american hobs, but the rye gives it a nice sweet bisquit like touch and an oily texture which i really enjoy. Definatly a fuller and more presant malt profile than the avarage IPA, but with all the hob power.
3.5 Bottle from Papsoe, sampled with Zinister. Thanks! Pours thin and cloudy brown with an aroma of sweet malt vinegar, floral hops, cedar, and apple. Flavors are rye bread and cedar chips. Very reminiscent of Hitachino Cedar. Average mouthfeel. Wasn’t sure how the Danes were gonna do with an IPA as they aren’t exactly known for the style, but this is a respectable effort.
3.7 Bottle at toms ... Brown red ... very high hopped lots of lime and pine ... again lots of pine an d lots of hop resisn. Very well balanced.
3.8 Bottle thanks to beeranarchist, at home, with cgarvieuk. Aroma is excellent citrus, piney, slightly peachy, amazing almost a 10. Taste is similar a little toned down, but hops dominate all over, bittering hops are great, the rye does show a little as it warms and gives sweetness.
3.3 Thanks to Papsoe for this IPA (via Kaggie97/Zinister trade). Dirty brown color with think tan head. Looks more like a Quad than an IPA (or an American IPA anyway). Wet hop aroma with an rye bread nose as well. A tropical fruit nose too...mango maybe. Rye bread flavor, along with cedar. Has an old-grapefruit lemonade-hop flavor. Weird. Overall a decent IPA...but I’ll stick with the West Cost being a hop-head. Thanks Papsoe.
2.9 Warm copper, a little white head. Big cranberry hop aroma, along with something herbal and green. Nettle? Odd. Initially a very crisp and full hop flavor, but then a change happens and it gets to be kind of messy. Green onions?
2.2 Draft - Dark amber body, white head, quite fast disappering; Quite big but quite bad nose, it simply has way to much hop in it; The body is the same, bitter but not overly, slightly sweet, way to much hop makes the texture murky; Quite long finish with so much hop that the aromas becomes almost onion like and the feel hop oil harsh. Usually i like hop, but this beer is simply to badly composed.
3.7 Fad. Ikke helt så bitter som jeg husker den, og langt mere balanceret på fad. Rigtig flot aroma, med en dejlig smag af humle og en kende sødme fra rugen der ikke ligner andre. Flot.
3.1 Cloudy amber pour with a thin offwhite head. Aroma and flavor of woody, resinous hops with a bitter finish, the hops are interesting but feel old and tired. The body is light to medium and the carbonation is medium.
