3.3bottle... dark black beer, very dark for a porter, light tan head, a bit watery, mostly leaves a ring... smells pretty nice, I get a lot of the honey, char... the taste is charred, a salty note... a bit tough to drink a ton of but 6 ounces is good
3.8Bottle thanks to Doodler. Pours black with a grayish brown head that dissipated to the edges. Aroma has a good amount of roasted malts with a backing sweet honey note and sweet chocolate with a hint of backing dark fruit. Flavor starts with roasted malts and a bit of sweet honey backed by some dark fruits. Real nice.
3.715th May 2009
Copenhagen Beer Festival. Opaque black beer with a chocolate coloured head. Soft silky palate. Quite sour, pleasantly so - cherryish - appleish. Subtle smoky malt then back to a fruity - sourish finish which leaves a warming afterglow. Chocolate malt in the aftertaste. Well joined up porter.
3.9Rating recreated from Jaksmart’s notes cause I lost my own. Elegant aroma with subtle roast, some sourness, sweet honey, vanilla, lots of malt, age, oak, chocolate and some oxidation. The age is very apparent, but not at all undesirable. Taste is sour. It doesn’t dominate but is the main thing to notice about this beer. The soy component and the roast has that sourness that is sometimes developed with age. Sweetness from the honey as well as bitterness from the roast. Clear soy component, coffee, sugar, chocolate. Nice and complex. I wouldn’t age this any more if I had a bottle (Oh, wait I do).
4.2Bottle. Black pour, small brown head. Elegant aroma with subtle roast, some sourness, sweet honey, vanilla, lots of malt, age, oak, chocolate and some oxidation. The age is very apparent, but not at all undesirable. Taste is also slightly sour but with sweetness from the honey as well as bitterness from the roast. Also, soy, coffee, sugar, chocolate. Very complex, some tartness as well. Infinitely malty which compliments the sourness. A very old bottle indeed, but what a nice old hag it is.
4.1Pours completely black with a brown head. Aroma of dark fruits, chocolate, coffee, medicine, smoke and honey. Taste is really big and complex. In the taste I got some of the stuff from the Aroma along with nuts, liquorice, soy and caramel. A sour kinda barleywine feel to it. I couldn’t drink a whole bottle of this alone but wow it’s good.
4.3From notes:
Pours a deep, dark ruby/chestnut brown color that appears pitch black in the glass. Almost completely opaque with slight mahogany edges and a two and a half finger frothy, dark mocha head. Excellent retention, only slowly fading into a lasting cap that coats the glass with large rings and chunks of soapy mocha lacing.
Roasted malt aroma with hints of sweet chocolate, molasses and candy sugar. Slightly acrid smelling with hints of burnt toast and a slight lactic cream presence.
Full bodied with a luscious, silky chocolate malt flavor. There’s a nice balance of sweet flavor and subtle roasted malt. Hints of milk chocolate, caramel and hazelnut balanced by toast, slight alcohol heat and faint spice. Slightly dry finish. The high ABV is excellently masked, making this beer dangerously drinkable. One of the best examples of the style that I’ve ever had. Highly recommended!
3.6750ml bottle Tampa Weekly Gathering @kiefdogs- thanks to kiefdog himself–pours a light brown ring for a head and black color. Aroma is tart dark fruit, oak, acidic. Taste is dark malt, tart dark fruit, oak, acidic. Soft carbonation.
3.6Pours dark amber with mocha head. The aroma is a bit dusty with malt balls, spicy black licorice and black strap molasses. The taste is similar with modestly thin body bringing in notes of spicy black licorice, black strap molasses, chocolate malt balls and some burnt malts to go along with a few layers of spicy and earthy hops.
2.7Thanks to kiefdog for pulling this one out of his cellar. Pours dark brown with a dark tan head. Nose is metal, tart fruit, chocolate, some roast, and a hint of sweetness. Flavor is similar with some slight vinegar, dark fruit, and a slightly vinegary finish. Medium-bodied and tart for a porter.
2.9(Bottle) Pours black with a creamy, light brown head. The aroma holds honey and dried fruits like figs, prunes and apricots up front. A light vinous oxidation note is present. Leather and tobacco. Herbal and light medical. Round and smooth roasted with mild tones of dark caramel, dark chocolate/chocolate cake, rye bread and cold coffee. Some brown sugar and muscovado sweetness on the nose. Maybe some cherry lemonade alongside a whisper of smoke. The flavour is near medium sweet and light to medium bitter. Only light acidic but quite sour. A salty hint that reminds me of liquorice present in the background. A touch of smoked bacon. Smooth roasted and vinous with a clear note of honey. Undertones of dried fruits, medicine and caramel. Well hidden alcohol. The mouthfeel is round and silky at first, but the finish is acidic and unclean. The aftertaste is of coffee roast, earthy tobacco/leather and citric acid. Medium to full bodied. Do not get me wrong, I love the old Olfabrikken brewery and the sour twist is maybe a result of my ungentle way of cellaring beers but the flavour is just too sour.
4.0Bottle shared by Marcus. Pours black with a clingy, low, but frothy, tan head. Light hone aroma with lots of toasted malt, plus a little heat. Full bodied with near creamy carbonation. Lots of burnt sugar malt - almost a touch of treacle. Finishes very thickly smooth.Goes well with spicey sausage.
3.6Pours black with a thin tan head and an awesome chocolate aroma. There is a bitter chocolate flavor and some sour fruit and carbonation. I’m not sure this bottle improved with age.
3.6$10.99 wasn’t too steep, so I got this at Discount Liquors. 2005 vintage. The beer pours to a black body with a dense tan head. The aroma is chocolate and tons of honey. Dark chocolate. The flavor is nicely chocolatey with a tangy back end. Medium full body. Tangy quality kind of reminded me of the New Glarus Olde English Porter (but not as sour)
4.5750 ml bottle stored for 15 months prior to serving.
Deep dark maroon with medium beige head that settles to a thin layer and nice lacing.
Dark chocolate aroma with berries and light spice, possibly cinnamon.
Flavor begins with sweet chocolate with a bitter cocoa edge, dark fruit, and vanilla. Nicely complex.
Great body, exactly as expected for a winter brew.
Worth seeking out. Laying it down for a season mellows it quite a bit.
4.4Bottle from my brother as a gift shared with a friend what a dumb ass I was,2005 vintage so I really didn’t know how this one was going to be,well to my surprize this one aged into a gem poured dark brown thick tan head with a nose of vanilla, honey, cofee and chocolate taste was of a sweet vanilla honey with coffee and chocolates coming to the party in my mouth late this one was a very big surprize I thought it could have been past its prime but it just stood up to time and shined like a rock star I am reccomending this one very strongly
3.9(on bottle) Pitch black, no head. Slightly tart, bramble and coffeebeans. The mouth is perky and at the same time, slowly bobbly. So for the taste itself it´s both dry and sweet, so complex drinking it, it makes me want red meats and heavy sauces. Some of the 11% are gone by now, but the coffeebeans just lingers on and on.
3.8This bottled brew from a bottle shop poured a medium sized head of foamy fine to medium sized light brown colored bubbles that were and left behind a opaque no visible carbonation dark brown colored body and a fair lacing. The mild aroma was dark malt. The flavor contained notes of vinous dark malt and mildly medicinal. A decent one that I would consider buying again.
3.8In an effort to knock out the rest of my backlog, my ratings will be fairly generic and sparse. If the beer had anything special to offer, it will be noted following this disclaimer. The number ratings above are accurate based on my tasting notes. Following the elimination of my backlog, all beers will be entered in real time and will be more useful. Sorry for the inconvenience.
Dark brown with dark roasted malts, coffee and chocolate. Not sure what makes this a winter porter versus a normal porter, but it is a great porter during any season.
4.0Dark brown with a small brown head. Coffee and chocolate tones. Roasted, bitter and coffee. Full body with a bitter finish.
4.0Olfabrikken is a small yet very skilled craft brewery out of Roskilde, Denmark. Along with a handful of other craft breweries, they are brewing life into a once dull, lifeless beer scene that consisted of clear, fizzy, golden lagers of lackluster value. Much like the craft brewing rise and revolution of the mid 70s, Olfabrikken has risen up against mass-market sameness and the quashing of originality to present me with one of their weapons-in-arms, the Winter Porter, a porter brewed with honey. I was less than impressed with the Samuel Adams Honey Porter, so I hope she fairs better.
She poured rich browns and blacks with a low-hanging haze of fog while lacy bubbles decorate the sides of my glass. Gentle waves of warm, cooked honeycomb drift upon a sea of maple syrup sprinkled with brown spices and soothing alcohol warmth. The Olfabrikken Winter Porter is 11% ABV so that is not too surprising. Her nose is delightfully seductive, and I dilly-dally not as I delve deep into her sweet depths. Warm honey and essence of porter are my very first impressions. To break it down, an undercurrent of dry dark chocolates carries atop dry, bitter roasted coffee with burnt sugar crystals coming in the finish. She starts off honeycomb suckling sweet, leading into burgeoning warmth in my chest and finishing with brown spices in my breath. Her sweet honey character is definitely predominant, but rich dry dark chocolates and roasted coffee beans act as a stabilizing ballast. An intriguing interplay of sweet and roasty. Just when I think she is too cloying, her partners in crime appear to save the day. As we part ways, my only nick-pick is I would have enjoyed a bit more influential porter character.
Not bad for what I believe is my first foray into Olfabrikken territory. Ironically enough, I am more familiar with their brothers-in-arms, Mikkeller. That being said, I enjoyed their Winter Porter, even though she was a tad on the sweet side. I would still recommend the Winter Porter brewed with honey for anyone looking for an enjoyably different quaffing experience.
3.4Bottle: Pours an oily opaque black with a few tan bubbles, but mostly still. Has a sweet dark caramel and honey nose with some hints of fruity tartness and black cherries. Starts with good fullness and sticky malty sweetness which could use some carbonation to lighten up on the palate. Has notes of dark chocolate covered cherries and raisins before a warming, slightly acidic finish. Would be better without the tartness as well, but still an interesting brew.
2.22008 vintage bottle and served in no-nik pint glass: Mahogany hued with a small but lasting foamy tan head and good lace. The aroma has notes of plums and fig, chocolate, ashy charred malt, tobacco, and noticeable sour lactic vapours. The taste starts with a medicinal rubbing alcohol flavor wrapped around an oxidized malty profile with acidic fruity tones. Sort of like a Flemish Sour meets a Baltic Porter that got turned into an Eisbock. Boozy throughout and intensely papery. At first I thought this bottle to be much older than it was but then looking at it closer before taking out the garbage I discovered it was only a 2008, so that is an even worse impression than before.... A complete disaster. High hopes turned into utter disappointment.
1.4(sample from irishboy)brown body with a brown head.heavily infected funky smell and taste.drain pour imho.
3.3Black with a thin tan head. Aroma is lightly roasty, alcohol, yeast, chocolate. Taste is roasty, light honey, alcohol, light funk on the end.
3.2750 ml bottle from Liquid Solutions. BB 1/12/2017, by then it should be super funky. Nose has coffee, caramel, maple, a a light funky tart note. Clear very dark brown with a small tan head. Flavor is coffee, sugary maple, and some light funk. Brewing sour beers must be making all these brewers infect stuff that IMHO should not be funky.
4.1yet another bottle by way of stfun... BB1/12/2017.
pours an opaque brown shade of black with a creamy, frothy, dense nutty brown head. it leaves a bunch of abundant lacing on the inside of the glass.
man, does this thing smell good!... chocolate, toasted nuts, coffee, licorice, black raisins, jagermeister herbs, grass, hay, molasses, wood, mint and birch. all on top of a layer of roasted malt.
the palate is overly sweet for my liking but there is a nice balance with bitterness and roasty grains. the flavor is fudgey with notes of prunes, molasses, lightly charred coffee, ash and a slight sourness with a savory yeast quality mixed with a bunch of stuff from the aroma... there is a lot going on in this beast.
it’s pretty nearly full bodied, creamy and rich. the alcohol gives it a dryness and parching feeling which keeps it from going too far. though it would be better suited in a 12 ounce bottle as it is far too sweet... 9/5/7/4/16/4.1
2.7Bottle: Dark brown pour with a medium-sized beige head. Nose is chocolate nougat, fusel alcohol notes and not much else. Something has definitely gone wrong with this bottle...overly oxidized flavors along with a metallic sourness to it that pretty much destroys everything that could be noteworthy.
3.9750, corked and baled. Thanks, Thewolf and after4ever! Pours blackish brown with a thick and creamy tan head. Medium body. Spicy chocolate aroma, sweet chocolate taste with a dry and lightly pine-tinged finish.
