Omer Vander Ghinste Oud Bruin

Omer Vander Ghinste Oud Bruin

Note: ABV ranges up to 6%.

Originally called "Ouden Tripel", this ancient West Flanders Brown beer has found a new élan as a regional specialty under its current name: "Bellegems bruin".

The main ingredients of our Bellegems Bruin are malted barley, wheat, hops, water, and caramelized malts. These are used to brew a top-fermented beer.

Blending this beer with lambic beer aged in oak for 18 months results in this specific West Flanders Brown beer. Its typical flavour is characterized by a well-balanced, hardly noticeable sourness.

This first flavour impression is soon followed by a second pleasant discovery: a slight bitterness followed by a hint of sweetness.

3.3 Deep red, clear with a minimal white head. Sweet malt, fruit and red berries aroma. Light sour with a sour red berries end.
4.0 7 year old bottle from probably Whole Foods. Deep brown color. Nice aged character. Sweet, malty caramels, lightest whiff of autolysis and ethyl acetate, but they fade instantly. Medium body. Low carbonation. Easy to drink. Excellent.
4.2 Zachte pittige zure afdronk die mooi klein en rond is klein zuur fris biertje. Verfrissend dorstlessend. Caramel, kersen, hout, noot

3.7 Bottle Date: 05/29/18; Sampled February 2020 A steady pour produces a thin, light brown tinged, tan colored head that doesn't really cover the top of the beer. The beer has a deep red / concentrated amber color that shows a lightly hazed, ruby-red hue when held up to the light. The aroma smells lightly tart, of fruity esters, toasted oak and nutty, oxidized aged malts. Oxidized caramel notes, caramelized dates, nutty raisin notes, hints of cherry and, as the beer warms up, spicy oak notes seem to mimic or accentuate a bit of alcohol warmth. A bit dry at first, but as it starts to roll across the tongue it picks up some sweetness; the sweetness is pretty well in check and certainly does not approach cloying, it is definitely in line with the classical interpretation of the style. Oxidation plays a clear role here, it doesn't get to the cardboard state at all, and seems to avoid seeming stale; lots of nutty, aged and toasted malt flavors, oxidized caramel notes, and toasted red / brown bread notes are noticeable. The body of this beer has some viscosity to it, but it is still nicely drinkable and the carbonation is just about where it should be (not noticed at all, so wasn't too much, or too little). A tasty enough beer, definitely in the style of Oud Bruins of the latter part of the last century. Something that brings back a bit of nostalgia for me.
3.6 Clear deep brown body. Off-white head. Lightly sour, lightly malt flavour. Well balanced lacto-sour flavour.
4.4 AROMA: Aroma a lúpulo nulo. Ligero aroma a alcohol no desagradables, integradas.
3.7 Pours a reddish brown with off white head. Lightly tart and malty aroma. Well balanced green apple-like tartness. Quite good. Notes: bottle at Cafe de Grendelpoort, Valkenburg NL Nov ‘19
3.4 Beautiful ruby read colour, no real head. Smell is sour wood, quite alcoholic, rotten fruit. Slightly funky Taste is sour bitter, quite dry. Metallic and quite full, with a lightly astringent crisp cleansing finish.
3.6 From. 33 cl bottle. Pours a c lear dark mahogany with an ecru head. Aromas are woody and dried cherries. Flavors mix sweet and sour cherries.
3.9 Bottle, 0.25l. Aroma of ripe fruit, red wine, caramel and yeast. Pours clear ruby brown color with thin creamy tan-like head and average sparkling appearance. Tastes of sweet caramel, sour ripe fruit, dried fruit, must, red wine, oak and funk. Medium body, slick texture and average carbonation in palate. Unforgettable classic...
3.8 Pours a rich reddish brown from a bottle, dark khaki colored head. Bright balsamic aroma, similar flavor, tart cherry and grapes in the mouth as well. Pretty good beer.

3.7 Deep amber pour, thin tan head. Nose is sour and a little wheaty. Middle is sour up front, some cherries, snap of wood, dark kilned malt, touch of dark bread. Finish is medium sourness, balanced by the malty sweetness.
3.6 Bière rood ruin des flandres très bonne. Manque d'un poil de caractère. Très bonne avec un burger au chèvre
3.8 Great tart beer with good malt character. It’s only downfall might be the sweetness is a but high. online Beerwulf bottle
4.1 Expecting a lot from this one ounce short bottle since I've seen it, high expectations! I got it for free for buying a case of singles at that place in boardman, HAH! The bottle at vintage was $5 and I've had some really good Flemish for $3!!! Directly out of the bottle, it does not disappoint! And, FYI, its a civilized, laid back - well centered label. Yes, and in the glass it looks like a very good dark beer, heheeh. First taste impression is this Omer stuff is very pleasing, yummy. Lovely. Is it as good as the old roady? Not sure, and BTW, what is the cost of a roady today anyway? You know, a simple contemporary very good flemmy? Is that what they call em today? A roadie? Do roadies even exist today with traveling bands, if BTW there are any modern traveling bands, that is. Yes! Tasty tart, and evenly fun; the whole way thru this bottle, you go-Omer. Yugo, Yugo. I need to open a beer plant that makes beer with this flawlessly simple mildly sour stuff. Yummy experience. Very nice thank you. Yeah! Much better than classic ice, wink wink! Redundant, NICE JOB VANDER GHINSTE!! Impressed.
3.0 Bottle pour into nonic pint glass as "Flanders Sour Ale - Redbrown." Appearance is clear cherry red with initial effervescence (bubbles stuck to the sides of the glass), decent sparkle, ephemeral head and no lacing. Aroma is dusty old book along with dank tart and mildly sweet fruit, background dark malts. Taste is balance of tart and sweet fruit (cherries), subtle malt backbone. Palate is light body with thin frothy texture, lively carbonation and finish as taste. Overall, both the tart and sweet could be amped up a bit more, but not bad.
3.4 The aroma of cherry and a little wine. Bright amber color, transparent with a little foam. In the taste of ripe cherry, pleasant sour in the aftertaste. The body is light, medium carbonation.
3.4 Pour is a dark red-brown with a small tan head. Aroma is red wine vinegar and some dark fruit. Flavor is lot of dark fruit. Plums and raisins. Some tartness comes out after the swallow but this is not mouth puckering. This was a bargain bin pickup so I did not know what to expect but this was very nice with lots of dark fruit and just a minor sour/tartness
3.6 25cl bottle. 25-04-2019. Courtesy of Noel, Jesus and the cotoya crew. Thanks!. BBD: 07-07-2020. In short: sweet subtle tart one. Did I enjoy it: yes. Pours hazy copper with vanishing off white head. Moderate head retention, little lacing. Sweet tart nose, caramel. Medium body, average carbonation, slick texture. Taste is subtle sour, sweet, caramel. Ok.
3.9 Caramel reddish brown in color... Aroma of dark fruits, raisins, dates, figs, nuts, light berry... Flavor is sweet and only modestly tart, lots of dark fruits, wild berries, cider, light nuts... finishes more sweet than anything... tasty
3.6 11.2 oz bottle received as day 8 of a 12 day advent mixed pack from my wife. Date of Production 04 17 18. The pour is a clear brown ruby golden with a foamy ½ inch light tan head. The aroma is sour black cherry, fruit sweetness and floral herbal yeast. The taste is a clean black cherry tart, sweet cherry fruit, and a touch of the herbal towards the back. The palate is medium bodied, spritzy carbonation and tart cherry finish. Refreshing, easy drinking beer.
3.3 250 ml bottle. Dark red, foamy head. Basement and barrel notes, balsamico vinegar, red currant and casis, some light red wine, a bit metal. Acidic sourness. Medium bodied, soft carbonated, watery texture, acidic finish. Good.
3.5 Apricot and lots of cherry. Some fig. Pours dark brown with ok head and lacing. Some tang. Probably a little too sweet, which is the flaw here. Bottle.
4.0 Bottle shared at CB. Thanks Aaron! Pours a dark ruby with a finger of off-white foam that lingers. Lovely tart cherry aromas with must, wood and yeast aromas. Smooth and very approachable on the palate. Crushed tart cherry flesh with light skin and stone astringency. Tart, but a nice underlying sweetness as well. Balanced and would go perfect with some food. Some mineral water like dryness on the finish with more sweet and tart cherry notes. Perfect carbonation and mouthfeel.
