Night gathers and it’s time to announce the newest beer in the Game of Thrones series. Take the Black Stout is named for the oath taken by those who stand the Night’s Watch at the Wall, defending Westeros against northern.
Take the Black Stout is a 7% beer, brewed with base, caramel, chocolate and roasted barley malts. Hopping includes Northern Brewer and Columbus; spices are licorice root and star anise. Hue is black with full tan head. Aromas include chocolate, caramel, and earthy hops, light roastiness, a touch of fruitiness. Tastes include chocolate, coffee, rich malts, and balanced roastiness. Clean hop bitterness joins with slight woody character and spiciness; the finish offers sweet malt character leading to spicy, earthy, hop bitterness.

3.6Huge thanks to Iznogud and Werckmeister for sharing the bottle! Drank at the Who Cares for Beer Festival 2016, Bevog Brewery in Bad Radkersburg, Austria. Black! Licorice, rye bread, roasty. Light wood flavors, sweet. Medium body, dry finish.
3.40,75l from tap at Bevog Festival shared by me from trade with amazngwrldfood, big thanks Rob. black color, small tan head. smells of spices, licorice, spices, brown sugary, decent smell. full body, soft carbonation, slick mouthfeel. tastes of bitter herbs, some coffee, licorice, light caramel, rather roasty, light leathers. finishes light to medium roasty bitter with notes of coffee and some licorice. nice one, but expected a bit more.
3.7Black with a tall tan head. Medium bodied. Roasted malt, chocolate, a bit of espresso, lightly spiced. Finish has nice mild roast and a bit of spice. Good brew.
3.9(Ommegang Game of Thrones #2 - Take the Black Stout) Bottle 750 ml, corked and caged, served into a snifter at home, ABV 7%
Black colour on the body, one finger of thick, dark beige head, with good retention.
Arom aof liquorice, red stewed fruits, plums, only faint anise.
The taste is sweet, more anise now, again red fruits, plums, figs, roasted malts, sweet chocolate, liquorice and oats, hints of coffee even.
Medium body, good carbonation, sticky on the palate.
Great beer.
3.9Bottle from back in 2013. Cleaning out the corners of the rot box tonight. Pours opaque black, medium creamy tan head, dissipates with lots of residual and nice lacing. Aroma is roast, hints of smoke, molasses, black licorice. Flavor is light plus sweet, light bitter, roasty, earthy, molasses and anise. Full bodied. I really wanted to hate this as a gimmick beer, but its actually pretty well done.
3.3Bottle. Pours black. Aroma and taste are roastedness, some chocolate, and licorice.
3.3Poured from a growler. Deep and dark which works well for me today. A beer that does not play around with its taste.
3.6Pours deep black, consistency looking like molasses almost. Thick tan head. Immediately large aroma of coffee, caramel, roasted malt, chocolate, toffee. The flavor is chocolate, roasted malt, espresso, caramel, earthy. Overall, very dry, nice aftertaste of coffee. Palate is medium, and creamy
3.5C-. Pours a black color with tan head. The finish is far too dry for my preference.
3.4Pitch black with a half-finger tan head and wispy lace. Aromas of unsweetened dark chocolate and faint espresso. A bit of brown sugar sweetness up front with spices, roasted malt and toast. Medium body, minimal carbonation, oily mouthfeel and a dark fruit sweetness in the finish.
3.9(En fût au Lucky Baldwin’s): Chocolat au lait, mélasse, menthe et un enrobage de baguette brûlée. Les houblons terreux se mêlent très bien à la torréfaction foncée, suave corpulence également. Belle surprise.
3.8Very nice beer. Licorice and roast. A slight smokiness lingers in the back. Not as heavy as expected from a stout this size.
3.6Bottle from the back of the fridge. Black. Light tan head. The aroma is both fruity/berryish and chocolatey. Fairly good balance of these elements on the palate, too. The chocolate is sweet, maybe a bit molassesy, and the blackberry fruit is a pleasant, unexpected accent. Bit fizzier than I might like but good beer.
3.9Jet black pour. The aroma is of roasted malt, roasted nuts and dark chocolate. Burnt malt flavor, with some coffee tones, some chocolate comes through. A great bitter chocolate aftertaste.
3.6Aromas of black malt, hints of earth, toasted dark rye and mild herbs. Dark brown with a smallish, tan head and decent lace. Feel is silky with a fine bubbled eff. Light sweet start, with bittersweet and dark chocolate. Mild dark toasted malt. Some woody licorice. Little bit of herbal hops. Bready yeast. Complex in some ways simple in others. Long herbal finish. 9/13
3.5Black pour with griatfy tan head. Some lacing as head dissapates. Earthy and roasty aroma, not overly bold though. Flavor is fairly complex. Earthy sweet chocolate, roasted malts, slight spice near finish. A little light in body but pleasant palate overall.
3.2750 ml. Nose is oatmeal, char, dark chocolate, soy and anise. Opaque ebony body with a lasting film of creamy foam. First flavor has graham cracker, semi-sweet chocolate, and then turns to a pleasant hit of earthy roasted vegetable and prunes. Subsequent sips are dominated by the dark, earthy spice mix that soon becomes a too-dominant mix of tobacco, cardboard and licorice. Medium body is watery with a too-long bitter spice additive finish. Medium-high fizz that flares up in the mouth doesn’t help this one either.
3.7750 ml bottle from Costco Bakersfield. Nose is chocolate, coffee, floral, and a hint of vanilla and char. Black with a big heavy lacing tan head. Flavor is moderately sweet chocolate with a slight hint of bitterness, licorice, and dark fruits.
3.3Bottle. Dark brown, almost black. Nice three finger tan head. Nice tan lace. Aroma is dark roasted grains with slight hints if licorice. Taste is dark roasted, almost burnt grains.
3.5750ml->snifter. Black with moderate tan head. Roasted malt, licorice, bitter coffee, cocoa, anise. OK.
3.62/14/16. 750mL bottle from Five Points. Happy Valentine’s Day, I guess, though technically it’s just after midnight, not the actual day. Black pour with a thick, creamy tan head that lasts for days and coats with lacing. House yeast maybe? Chocolate on the aroma, dark chocolate that is, a big dose of dark roasted malts, light spice. Ashy, dry, roasted malt flavor, a touch of a savory aspect, dark dark bakers chocolate, a Belgian aspect, light spice, lingers dry and bitter. High, burning carbonation.
3.0Aroma is Belgian yeast, roasted malt, not much else. Appearance is black, poured thin, light brown. Taste is Belgian yeast, some roasted malt, nothing else. Mouthfeel is heavy, medium carbonation, lots of Belgian yeast in the aftertaste. Overall, about as good as expected from a brewery I don’t like.
3.6The aroma is caramel, a little coffee. Pours black with a frothy tan head, mostly lasting and excellent lacing. The taste is bitter. The body is medium, the texture thin, the carbonation fizzy and the finish bitter. Not bad, just a little too fizzy.
3.7Pours black with a foamy, brown head. Nose is earthy with chocolate and coffee notes; hint of anise. Taste is rich and bitter like dark chocolate. Medium body. Moderate carbonation. Very nice.
3.1Reminds me a lot of the first beer we homebrewed. Dark burnt flavors round out the medium body chocolate flavors.
