Ommegang Ommegeddon

Ommegang Ommegeddon

Belgian pale & pilsner malts w/ Styrian Golding for bittering and Saaz for aroma. Ginger predominates the spicing. Fermented in primary with Ommegang’s house yeast, followed by secondary with Brettanomyces bruxellensis. Dry-hopped in secondary w/ a blend of hops; Tettnang being the stand-out. The flavor profile is very herbal with an earthy undertone (very fitting for a Belgian-style farmhouse ale). The dry finish and pronounced hop aromas hide the 8% abv very well. Dangerously drinkable for its strength and character.

3.8 750 ml bottle shared by dbsdelight- thanks again, Dan! Batch #3, April 2008. Pours a hazed gold color with a minimal white head. The aroma has a lot of bretty funk, with spice, floral notes, lemon, and sweet malts. Flavor of peppery spice, herbs, pale and sweet malts, grass, and farmhouse funk. Medium-bodied, with low carbonation and a funky, spicy mouthfeel. Really good saison that seems to be aging well.
3.1 A: The beer is hazy and orange with a small head that fades rather abruptly, leaving a few faint traces of lacing on the glass. S: I was surprised by the lack of any prominent wild / funk / brettanomyces character. The most present aromas were fruits, most notably apples, and alcohol. T: I found this beer to be a bit too sweet. While I realize that the addition of wild yeast does not necessarily indicate that the beer will be a sour / funk bomb, I was expecting much more from Ommegeddon. Overall, I found this beer to relatively bland, while I felt the label and addition of wild yeast suggest the exact opposite. M: Medium - thin in body, with a subtle alcohol presence throughout. Sweetness is also prevalent throughout, which often limits my enjoyment of a beer, as is the case here. D: Overall, I found this to be rather bland and unexciting. 3.7 Bottle from Jessup Plaza. Batch 5 from 2009. Pours orange with lots of white head. Lots of carbonation. Big sour notes on the nose but also some fruit essence. I’m guessing 3 years have mellowed out the taste some what but it still puckers the lips. Solid!
3.6 Bottle from DiarmaidBHK - thanks! - bottle is from 2009, so that seems to mellow this one. It pours a cloudy orange gold with a white head. Aroma is funky!! Taste is a bit sweet and it finishes a bit dry. Overall, smooth and funky!
3.5 bottle at Damico’s. pours light tan with slight head that fades, nose is funk, malt, brett & belian yeasty esters. similar taste with with slight bite at end.
3.5 Thanks to djrn for sending this bottle my way. The beer pours a hazy orange-brown color with a white head. The aroma is full of toffee and orange citrus, with some brett thrown in for good measure. The flavor is similar, with a few additions. I get some nice toffee and brett notes, with some cherry and dark fruit also in there. There is not really any funk from the brett, which is what I expected. Medium mouthfeel and medium carbonation.
3.2 Bottle. 25.4 oz. Pours yellow apple golden wtih a huge, tightly bubbled, off-white head. Slender spider-leg lacing around the tulip glass. Aroma is filled with pine, dry hops, lemon zest, orange peel, wet soil, banyard funk, slight Brett notes, and odd hints sunflower seeds. Medium to full bodied with a tangy, sticky mouthfeel. The Brett does not quite cut a sour taste in this brew, but it provides just the right amount of tartness. Finishes with a swirl of hoppy and lemon notes, before vanishing airily off the back of the tongue. Overall, a very nice sipping saision, with a bit more alcohol than most. Definitely worth a try for fans of the style.
3.6 750ml corked bottle pours a hazy golden color with a 3 finger white head that retains well and leaves some spotted lacing on the glass. Aroma is fruity with some spices and yeast with some herbal hops. Taste is earthy and herbal hops with the fruit and spices and yeast with some malty backbone. There is some sourness in there as well. Medium bodied with adequate carbonation leaving a nice feeling on the palate. An interesting and enjoyable tasting experience.
3.1 Green/herbal aroma with just a bit of funk in the nose. Some slight citrus in there. This bottle has been kept pretty cold for the 18 months since I bought it so I guess not as much Brett character. Some barnyard funk is there but this is nowhere near as dirty funky as the previous bottle I had. That thing was DIRTY!
3.0 Bottle. From November 2011 notes. Earthy malt aroma. Dark golden with a small white head, and sediment. Sour barnyard funk flavor with a dry finish. Light carbonated body.
4.1 Batch 1, June 2007, drank Jan 2012: Pours a cloudy golden with suspended particles and a medium white head, aroma has sweet peppery spices and dusty earthy hay, starts and ends neither sweet nor bitter with a mineral aftertaste, thin bodied with a watery mouth feel and light carbonation. I was expecting a sour bomb and instead got this sublime delight.
3.5 Batch 4, May 2009. I’ve has this one cellaring for a while, with the last few months waiting its turn in the beer ’frig. Cork was a bit recalcitrant; had to break out the Channellocks to make the initial twist. Snifter. Subdued head (perhaps due to the 21/2 years in the bottle), poured a burnished copper orange. Very clear, little residual carbonation. A little funk in the nose, followed by sweet-ish bread and fruit notes. Sharp flavors up front: earthy, funky and roasty, finishing with hops and a vague phenolic bite. Interesting and worthy effort, if not a complete success.
4.0 750ml C&C bottle thanks to footbalm (batch #1, June 2007) Appearance: Holy carbonation batman, the cork flew out as I was twisting off the cage. Luckily only a small amount of the good stuff came out. Pours slightly hazy yellow with a big frothy white head and lots of sticky lacing Aroma: Brett, ripe fruit, spices and citrus Taste: Light mouthfeel of citrus, peppery, barnyard, herbal with a tart dry finish Very nice, refreshing and enjoyable.
3.2 Batch #4...pours a hazy amber with a medium foamy white head. Aroma has a mild sweet citrus...orange...and notable ginger...some caramely malt. Flavor has some spice up front...ginger...with some yeasty, fruity notes and tea-like hops. Mouthfeel is light and silky and the finish is slightly malty and spicy...dry. I noticed no brett qualities...mildly disappointing.
3.7 Bottle at Iceland super tasting. Cidery hazy gold pour with white head. Aroma of brett, cider, grain, saison and funk. Taste is quite bretty/funky with some apple juice flavors (a bit off here). Palate is dry and well carbed, good stuff.
3.9 2009 batch 2 750, saison yeast dominant in the aroma, flavor is saison yeast up front and a strong nuance of Brett that really adds charmingly. Awesome job guys. Some light bitterness on finish.
3.8 Batch #4, May 2009. 750 mL bottle from Siciliano’s Market in Grand Rapids, served in a snifter. Pours hazy copper with a moderate tan head. The head mostly remains and leaves a small amount of fine lace. On the nose, there are notes of toasty malts, pale fruit, ginger, pepper, touches of Brettanomyces, hops, herbs and earth. The flavour is moderately honey sweet with slight sour and bitter notes. There is also dust, pale fruit, orange peel, ginger and pepper. The finish is drier, with more prominent ginger. On the palate, it is medium in body with a smooth, syrupy texture and soft carbonation. Overall, this is a very interesting brew, at once sweet and syrupy, while being also spicy and somewhat funky. Truly unique. 2011-08-23
3.5 Batch #4 Bomber from 2009. Pours cloudy orange with foamy white head. Aromas of earth, basement, lemon, floral, pepper. Mild-moderately sour and bitter. Overall, the beer is interesting, but I found something mildly unpleasant with the back end taste.
3.9 Batch 1 bottle thanks to Seth. Clear pale yellow with a faint white head. Smooth with lemon, cereal, yeast, and barnyard flavors. Really mellow and very tasty..
3.8 750ml bottle, corked and caged. Pours a lovely deep golden orange with a one finger frothy white head. Head recedes to leave rings of sticky lace. Lots of funk in the aroma, although, not as strong as I expected. Tart and sour elements as well as some ginger spice. Flavor is simultaneously fruity and funky. Orange peel, lemon peel, cherries, pears, all with Brett and Ommegang’s house yeast. Tough to describe. Light in body with sharp, active carbonation.
3.6 Batch #2 march 2008. Pour cloudy golden yellow with a huge fluffy white head that lasts. Aroma is the best part about this brew with nice florals and sweet bubblegum with faint must. Taste is very dry musty with notes of sour funk sweet faded juicyfruit and a bitterness throughout. Palate is medium and full carbonation with a lasting dry finish. This is a fairly tasty brew, but after getting the aroma I was hoping for more. The alcohol also shows quite a bit in the end.
3.6 Bottle @ home, picked up in somewhere in the Midwest. Cloudy, yellow-orange appearance with some sediment and a white head. Spicy, peppery, citrusy, Belgian yeasty, light barnyard aroma. Slightly vinous, peppery, Belgian yeasty, spicy, ginger, lightly sour, dry belgian ale flavor. Dry, spicy finish.
3.7 750ml bottle poured into a tulip glass. The beer pours a golden yellow with a white head. Lots of carbonation in this one. Aromas are Belgian yeasts and some funk...a little sour. Taste is funky from the brett, but also a little sweet from the yeasts. There is a bit of sourness too that is not expected. Overall, a nice change of pace and a unique beer that is very good.
3.9 A - Pours a rich slightly hazy deep golden-orange color with a finger of frothy white head. The head fades down to a thick ring around the glass leaving behind some nice lacing. S - The aroms is a mix of strong tart and sour elements. There is a lot funkiness and some hay and spices mixed in as well. T - The beer starts off with some sour and tart flavors right away. There is also some malt in there and some fruitness as well. Through the middle, some stronger funkiness comes out alongside some hay and some spices as well. The finish is a mix of slighly sour and tart and just a bit sweet with a bit of funkiness and some fruits/earthy flavors as well that linger. M - Medium bodied with moderate lively carbonation. The sour and tart flavors feel great and beer feels really smooth and even pretty crisp. The finish has a nice mix of sweet and sour flavors. D - Very drinkable. The balance of tart and sour as well as other flavors is really nice. There are also some nice funky elements mixed in as well.
3.7 Batch #2 March 2008 bottling pours golden with a white head. Aroma is funk, pineapple, light cherry, and spices. Flavor is fruity, pepper, light earthy funk, with a dry, hoppy finish.
3.7 Batch #4, May 2009. So this bottle has nearly 2 years on it. Aroma is that of belgian yeast and brett with some malts coming through. The appearance is a light golden/amber color and pours with a fluffy white head. The taste is very similar to the aroma and is an example of a solid farmhouse ale. It is very drinkable and comes across the tongue with prominent belgian , brett, and hop notes with a malty sweetness coming through as the beer warms. Complex and drinkable is my overall verdict
3.3 Light orange color with lively bubbles. Very little head. Aroma is earthy and spicy but not picking up the advertised funk. Flavor is certainly farmhouse but again, little funk. Very dry palate but not really a clean hop bitterness. I was expecting better.
3.4 The beer pours a light cloudy brown with a white head that has good retention but poor lacing. The aroma is too light for a wild for me, only a little funk comes through, should be a lot more. The taste is also pretty light as well, barely brining to life any funk. There is some funk there but followed by some skunk. I think the real problem here is that it needs more time to mature. The feel was ok, drinkability good because it was plain. Overall, not a good first try, maybe I’ll get one to age and try again in the future.
3.8 The brett is nowhere to be found, i could barely tell they added it to this. This is a beginners sour/farmhouse and it is well executed for what it is.
