Orkney Skull Splitter (Bottle)

Available filtered in 330ml bottles.

"Named after Thorfin Hausakliuuf, the seventh earl of Orkney, this reddish coloured ale has an intense vinous nose, is rich and satiny in the mouth with a long dry finish and deep rich fruity notes.
Described as ’Satiny smooth in the mouth, deceptively light and dangerously drinkable’."

3.7 Finally grabbed to get new region. Cherry brown pour some head and thin alcohol film. Nose is cherry and tobacco. Tastes similar, some toffee some booze. Nice throwback brew
2.7 Old rating from 14-06-15 - 330ml bottle from Dunell's in Jersey. Pours brown with a off white foamy head. Aromas & tastes of toffee, dark fruits, herbs, banana & a fair amount of alcohol. Medium body. Sweet moderate bitter finish. I didn't enjoy this at all & it was hard to finish
4.4 Blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah.
3.6 330 ml. bottle. Pours a medium, well retained, light beige head, over a clear amber (SRM 12) body.....nose is toffee malt, mild fruit tones slight herbal notes.....taste is dominant toffee malt with slight sweet tones, multiple fruits and herbal notes, slight bitter finish.....mouth feel, medium body, slight alcohol, moderate carbonation. This is lovely enjoyable drinkable beer meeting the style.
3.7 Scotch Ales are definitely a favourite of mine. This is one of the better ones, the colour and aroma are spot on, there is a nice toffee taste, a slight amount of oak, and the expected hint of banana. My only complaint is that the flavour falls away a bit too soon. Definitely have it again though 😉
3.8 330ml bottle into glass at room temperature. From 1st Choice, Springfield. Ruby red beer with high fine carbonation and a towering foamy head. Aroma is boozy toffee malt with a hint of banana. Gorgeous. Zingy in the mouth. Tastes like a Christmas pudding with a lot of alcohol added. Dried dark fruit, malt, cake, it's all there. The finish is warming alcohol with a touch of sourness. Semi-sweet nightcap.

3.4 Bottle from Cheers Liquor Store, Todmorden. Dank brown and full of sediment after six years sat in my cellar, three years past its sell date but absolutely fine. Smoothish but perhaps crisper giving it a very drinkable texture, certainly for its strength, which isn't that obvious. The malt profile away from its aroma is a little subdued but perfectly drinkable.
3.9 Bottle from The Orkney Brewery. Pours an almost clear mahogany colour with a medium sized thick beige head. Gentle carbonation. Aromas of dry dark fruits, caramel, cherries, apples and fruit cake. Taste is fairly similar to the aroma with the same notes and a little added spice and a touch of alcohol on the palate. Full bodied with a smooth mouthfeel. Well balanced. A lingering dry fruity finish. A nice winter warmer. Good one!
3.3 Dolce, retrogusto affumicayo
3.7 Gran carattere malato, toni torrefatti, schiuma leggera, colore scuro, gusto bilanciato, tenore alcolico ben nascosto.
3.6 First scotch ale from scotland. What i think it should be like. Great malt profile without being to chewy. Boozy but appropriate.
4.0 330ml bottle. Pours a dark mahogany with a thin tan head. Aroma of sweet malts, toffee, caramel malts, dark fruits, apple, light hops. Lovely silky mouthfeel. And what a wonderful taste! Very complex yet smooth, loads of dark fruits, apple, caramel, roasted malts, slight wood on the finish. Sweet, fruity, smooth and rich!
3.7 On tap. Pleasant copper color, slightly yellowish fine foam. Aroma: malt crystal and caramel, pastries, wine, British hops and esters. Taste: malt, fruity, lollipops, esters, soft hop bitterness, soft and tasty, good.
3.4 Tap at avalon, chania. Red amber smmoth orange head. Mild nutty and malty aroma. Flavor is malty, bitter nutty, quite dry. Reminds me a lot of chimay red.g
3.9 I said that I was looking for "malty IPAs" and the beer store guy suggested that this I try a bottle of this. Scotch Ales, who knew!!!. Very good. Poured with the medium red-golden color and tan head. Aroma and taste is of a roasted malt, dark stone fruit ale. Smooth drinking. It was more than I normally pay for beer, but it was very good and I might try it again and explore more of this type.
3.6 A: Clear mahogany with a medium tan head. N: Strong sweet malts and some summer fruits. T: Caramel and fruits. Good bitterness and some alcohol warmth. P: Medium-full O: Not bad and dangerously drinkable.
4.3 Orkney Skull Splitter 8.5%. Red, dark fruity aroma, dates, fig, spices, full bodied, dark roasted malt, rich molasses, dried fruit, spices, Christmas pudding. Stunning ale from Orkney.
3.9 Found on tap at Olde London Road in Asheville, NC. Pour is a dark brown with thick foam. The epitome of the style. Hits you hard but mellows out rather quickly. Makes for a great late fall through winter beer.
4.4 A bottle from Beers of Europe, drunk at Dad's place while on leave. Aroma: raisins and malt. Appearance: clear dark brown, 2-3 ml. tan head. Palate: full-bodied and oily, average carbonation; predominantly sweet, complex and flavoursome finish. Taste: heavily sweet and bitter, well balanced; vanilla and almonds. An excellent beverage.
2.1 It’s kind of nasty tasting, but I realize that’s what you want. Try as I might, this one’s not for me.
3.6 Couldn't figure the style from the bottle, got it home, and ooh, not a favored style, but this is decent. Somehow it is not as sickly sweet as some. A bit of peat/smoke, and somehow finishes dry. I actually like it.Some sort of dark fruit in the nose adds quite a bit, and the appearance is awesome, burnt sienna crayon, clear, some lace.
3.6 Aroma; perfumed plum, fruits, roasted winey malts. Look; pale beige head n ruby body. Taste; roasted malt, winey prune, berries n almond, bourbon notes, and finishes deliciously warming. Feel; good body and fine co². Overall; elegant. [btl sudden gift t@home] 6474'15
3.9 Tawny amber pour, wispy off white head. Nose is a bucket of Carmel malts. Middle is soft caramel, roasted malts, woody undertones. Finish is subtle smoky malty. This is way too drinkable.
3.6 ravfarget, korn, lakris, hint av røyk...........................................
3.6 Brown. a little cloudy and with a modest head. The nose is fairly strong and malty: brown bread and bananas, cream sherry, toast... quite grand. On the tongue, there is much less sweetness and rather more bitterness than the aroma might lead you to expect. But the bitterness is also somewhat short-lived and the finish comes with a hint of liquorice - which has a strange 'thinning' effect. Yes, I'd like this beer more if that bitterness lingered a little longer. Overall, this brew has a warming, wintery character (not merely due to high ABV), but it retains some simple 'quaffability', too. Perhaps it is best consumed casually and non-analytically... lest one dwell on its potential for 'greatness' and the details foiling that aspiration.
4.0 Ruby with an off white head, dark fruit, sherry, fruit cake aroma, medium body, similar flavours, booze is well hidden, smooth, easy drinking for the abv. Lovely
3.6 It pours copper with some clouding and has an off white head. Malty aromatics are high with caramel and toffee. The flavor has a high amount of caramel and toffee with a bit of herbal elements. There is also low floral. It has smooth alcohol warming with a moderately heavy feel. Overall, it has quite a bit of malt flavoring with alcohol. Everything else is low in the background.
