Oskar Blues Ten FIDY - Stranahan's Colorado Whiskey Barrel

Oskar Blues Ten FIDY - Stranahan's Colorado Whiskey Barrel

Ten FIDY’s huge-but-comforting flavors hide a hefty 10.0% and 98IBU. This version is aged in whiskey barrels from Stranahan’s Colorado Whiskey (Denver, CO) to create an even trippier extreme beer.

[Editor’s Note: The brewery has had the ABV of the regular Ten FIDY tested at a lab, which came out to 9.4%. This version is thus set to that value for consistency, but may not be exactly identical.]

4.1 Sampled at FoBAB ’12. Pours black with a medium sized tan head. The aroma and flavor was for the most part similar to the regular version of Ten Fidy; roasted malts, dark chocolate, espresso but add a nice touch of the barrel. Oak and just a hint of whiskey that adds a hint of cherry are enough to enhance the base just a bit.
4.0 Sample FOBAB ’12 - Wild Turkey Barrel Aged variety - poured from unmarked tall boy, so this drink means business! Black with speckling of a head. Aroma is chocolate, hint of vanilla, and bourbon - sort of mild, and very inviting. Flavor is Ten Fidy, but with a smooth, mild bourbon presence, maybe a hint more vanilla (need side by side!) and some wood - good stuff! Palate mimics the flavor - smooth and rich, and this one had some serious body to it. Solid!
4.3 Blank tallboy Can at Fobab 10. This was aged in Wild Turkey barrels. Pours black with a dark brown head. The nose is Ten Fidy all the way, with a big hit of vanilla and bourbon. This beer can definitely support the barrel. Lots of chocolate, coconut and rich malt in the nose. On tasting, the sweetness is there, but so is the richness. Balanced bitterness, tons of wood character, too. One of the better BA imperial stouts I’ve had in quite a while.
4.3 Pours a still, thick, opaque black with a rim of caramel colored head. The surface of the beer is completely still. The aroma is more subtle than I would have thought. There is chocolate and toffee with some wood. On the palate, this beer is incredibly rich... luscious. The bourbon is fairly understated but the wood comes out strong and balances a smoother rendition of the usual Ten Fidy. Awesome and worth seeking out.
4.3 5 oz Draft at UES Pony bar with Linh during the "mountain high" event. Pours deep blackish body with deep red tint when a touch of light hits it. Light brown lacing. Aroma is super sweet chocolate syrup, bourbon and molasses. Mouthfeel is slick with notes sweet bourbon, chocolate, molasses, light licorice, booze, and a touch of vanilla.
4.3 2oz Sample at FOBAB, wild turkey barrel. Pour from tall can. Jet black with a slight head. A good amount of bourbon taste in this one but not as overpowering as many of the others. Nice malty sweetness mixes with the bourbon. Had this right after blacknote and I liked this a bit more.
3.8 Fobab.Pours black as black with only the thinest layer of oily head. Aromas of bitter grain, coffee liqueur, dark chocolate and alcohol. Plenty of alcohol in the flavour and lots of roasted brainy.
3.9 On tap (listed as Wild Turkey Barrel-Aged Ten Fidy): The aroma consists of chocolate, molasses, black licorice, vanilla, and whiskey. It’s a dark brown, virtually black, with no transparency. It has a small brown head that leaves behind minimal lacing. The flavor starts with chocolate, molasses, and light black licorice. The finish has vanilla, coconut, and whiskey. It’s full bodied with minimal carbonation and a somewhat flat mouthfeel.
4.4 Another one i’ve been wanting to try for a long time. On tap at FOBAB in Wild Turkey barrels. This one poured an absolute jet black, just as ten fidy always does with a tiny dark brown head. Aroma was lots and lots of whiskey, with light dark chocolate, and strong roasted malts too. Flavor was very strong yet inviting. Lots of whiskey, but not completely covering up the awesomeness that is ten fidy. Mouthfeel on this stuff is thin moteroil and winey. Glad I got to try this one.
4.6 This is the Wild Turkey whiskey barrel aged Ten FIDY poured up at the brewpub on tap with an aged motor oil darkness with a mocha head that leaves behind full on sheet lacing. The aroma offers up dark roasted malts and fudge brownie and chocolate. The taste is rich creamy heaven, what more do you need to know. OK, I get fudge brownie that employs European silky rich fatty butter yumminess, sweet smooth whiskey and dark roasted to near burnt malts. This is sweet smooth booze that picks up more dark roasted malts and a pleasing chocolate note into the finish. Holy cow! Simply amazing poetry being written here as the barrel aging only adds to the amazing base beer rather than smother it like so many other brews out there. This is holy hell good. I gotta sit down . . .
4.2 On tap at the brewery, GABF weekend Appearance: Black with a creamy tan, nitro, head Aroma: Roasted malts, bourbon, woody and vanilla Taste: Same as aroma. Dark roasted malts, bourbon, woody, vanilla and coconut Very nice and smooth.
4.1 On tap at the brewery during GABF week. One hell of a brew. Actually had the nitro whiskey version. Pours a jet black color with a big nitro head. A sweet vanilla nose with big bourbon and roast. Excellent flavor with dark fruit, roast, big whiskey, very oily palate. Damn!
4.4 Sample at GABF 10/11/2012, thanks to Bluemeow76 for assistance with note-taking. Pours black with a thin tan head. Spotty lacing. Aroma of bourbon and malt. Rich and smooth with flavors of oak, dark chocolate and malt. Moderately boozy finish with oak and chocolate lingering. Good all around.
3.8 Draft at Bavarian Lodge. Got the last bit of this as the keg kicked Friday night. Black, of course, and with a big hit of whiskey in the nose. Taste is a little sweeter than I might expect, with some cherry in the background. Got a very small sample, so more I really cannot add. To this.
2.8 On tap at The Tipsy Cow - Pours black with no head. Nose is big and boozy, with sweet brown sugar and molasses. Taste is the same, with even more sugary sweetness and heat through the finish. Thick and viscous. Why do I even try these beers anymore? I know they’re going to be too sweet and boozy for my tastes, and 90% of the time they are.
4.4 What a spectacular beer. If you like Ten Fidy, then you will be blown away by this. Lots of chared flavors, dark chocolate, whiskey, and a touch of vanilla. what a great beer. I could sip on this all day. Nice and thick in the mouth, low carbonation. The smell is amazing. I’ll stop gushing, just pour me another.
3.9 Draft on tap at Tipsy Cow (Madison, WI). Pours a stark black pour, thicker and black, opaque, with no real head. No lacing. Aromas are brown sugar, caramel, and roasty malts. Bourbon barrel, vanilla, and gentle spirit grace our presence. Some toast, cocoa, pretzels, some oak, vanilla, and touches of spirit grow. Initial is thicker bodied, full on the palate with vanilla, roasty malts, cocoa, and coffee. Toffee, vanilla, caramel. Some thicker body, richer barrel flavor. Touches of dark fruit dance in and out. Marshmellow, sweeter brown sugar, kisses of barrel dance in and out, masking heat but giving flavor. Fuller, not over barreled, giving good richer flavors. Fudge, touch of dark fruit, some roasty and cocoa, coffee elements flourish. Backend offers some spirit barrel, lots of vanilla, fudge, roasty and coffee elements. Really good flavors, nose. Good flavors, a bit sweet overall but thicker body with still a good barrel flavor. Pretty nice, a bit sweet overall. But a really nice offering.
4.0 I liked this quite a bit more than the original. Perhaps the mellowness of the aging process is what helped it most. I wouldn’t age a can of Ten Tidy due to the bpa. But with the added bourbon plus the aging, it is a ton better. It seemed more bitter.
4.1 On tap at Dexters in Madison, WI, what a sweet find while stopping here, pours black with a thin dark brown head, the aroma is very heavy on the whiskey with some vanilla and oak as well, the flavor has a heavy whiskey front end with a nice sweetness in the finish with the chocolate, vanilla and toffee. Really interesting, as it warms it gets much more complex and more enjoyable, really enjoyed this.
3.3 Appearance: Pours a viscous dark brown No swirls no head no lace. Aroma: Chocolate, whiskey, vanilla and leather. Taste: Char and chocolate right away. Whiskey, vanilla, and chocolate cereal. Mouthfeel: Full bodied with very low carbonation. Overall: I’m a huge fan of Ten FIDY. It’s so full of life and flavor. This barrel aged treatment took away some of its liveliness and didn’t really improve upon any aspect of the beer. I’ve been chasing this “tick” for years, glad I did, but I’m happy knowing the superior product is in the 4 pack of cans and not the whiskey barrel.
4.0 From can into pint glass. A: strong dark chocolate, lots of chocolate and coffee malt, and smell of rich alcohol. App: the darkest, most inky beer I have ever poured. With a one finger very dark tan head. T: dyingStrong alcohol on the front, hints of chocolate and coffee. Back is solid alcohol with very mild hints of coffee the chocolate malts. P: very subtle bubbles, but very, very creamy and smooth with a medium-length aftertaste of alcohol.
3.2 Pours black as can be but also with very little carbonation and essentially no head. Smells of whiskey and a touch of vanilla, but fairly boozy. Some roasted malt, maybe some oak, and that’s about it. Not much complexity. The flavor is a touch aggressive on the alcohol flavor. Lots of whiskey and wood flavor, quite a bit of roast too. Could use a lot more vanilla and chocolate to soften things and sweeten it up. A big let down.
4.0 Pour on tap at Avery Strong Ale 2012, dark black pour with creamy tan head, aroma brought notes of big toffee, caramel, dark fruits slightly before whiskey and chocolate come through, hints of roasted malts and espresso laced in. Taste was a nice mix of sweet chocolate and dark fruits, some bitter espresso and cocoa powder mixed into slight whiskey notes that were fairly restrained, roasted notes round it out.
4.7 At Avery’s 2012 Strong Ale Fest. (Wild Turkey Version). Black with a thin chocolate milk head. Boozy chocolaty whiskey aroma with a roasty black malt, molasses, and oak with more chocolate. Flavor is surprisingly smooth with balanced whiskey boozy notes, a shade of oak, and a whole bunch of chocolate, a touch of coffee, and some burnt toffee. Amazing.
4.3 Tap @ Vine Street Pub, Denver. Wild Turkey barrel. Pours pitch black with a fading brown head, leaving nice lacings. Aroma of roasted malt, dark chocolate, bourbon, vanilla, oak, caramel, dark fruit. Taste is very rich with roasted malts, dark chocolate, burnt caramel, sweets, oak, vanilla, bourbon, plums and other dark fruit. Full body, soft carbonation, long lasting finish with sweet chcolate and bourbon notes, alcohol well hidden. 280212
3.9 Tap @ Vine Street. This version was aged in Wild Turkey barrels. Dark black appearance with a dark brown head. Dark roasty malts, light espresso, fairly sweet, somewhat boozy whiskey aroma. In the flavor, there was again a somewhat sharp, albeit sweet, booziness from the Wild Turkey barrels that didn’t integrate all that seamlessly with the dark roasty, chocolate malty elements of Ten Fidy. Nice brew but I think the Wild Turkey barrels should be replaced with a different whiskey barrels for future releases.
3.8 Courtesy of jblauvs- huge thanks! The pour is inky black with a small tan head. The nose holds roasty chocolate, oak, mild lactic notes, a hint of popcorn, and caramel. The flavor holds more caramel, cherries, toffee, a hint of butter, and roast. The palate is thick and oily with a chalky roasty finish. Don’t know quite what to think of this beer.
4.0 Inky Black Pour, Glugs out of the bottle. Aroma is woody, dusty chocolate with hints of vanilla, oak, and a hint of heat. Mouthfeel is considerably thinner than regular ten fidy, oily not as viscous. Lots of heat initially, Flavor is bittersweet chocolate, sweet boozy whiskey, cherry wood, loads of tobacco. Interesting to say the least, a little muddled and confusing, but relatively tasty
3.8 Big big thanks to jblauvs for this one. Pours a rich rich black with a brown head. Aroma holds some nice shaved milk chocolate, a touch of roast and ash, cherry, woody vanilla, and some caramel. Flavor is very interesting; more notes of chocolate, wood, and chocolate. The palate is surprisingly much thinner than regular Ten Fidy; not nearly as viscous. Good, but a little weird.
4.2 bottle at CCB tasting. poured black with a trace of a cocoa colored head. aroma and flavor were fudge, whiskey, vanilla, and some dark roast. body was thick and oily.
