Oud Beersel Green Walnut

Oud Beersel Green Walnut

“Green Walnut” is a surprising and innovative Lambic beer of Oud Beersel. For the production of the Green Walnut real fruit is used, in the same way as for the Oude Kriek of Oud Beersel.
In July the still green walnuts are gathered in the Oud Beersel orchard and are added to the Lambic beer that matured in wooden wine barrels.
After the bottle fermentation this sparkling walnut Lambic of Oud Beersel is called Green Walnut, which is a strong companion for blue-veined cheese, dried ham and salads with nuts.

The green walnuts macerate in the Lambic beer enabling them to unfold their taste and flavour. The initial bitterness which is extracted from the walnuts is tempered during the ripening of the walnut Lambic. This results in a delicate balance between the light sourness of the Lambic beer and the bitterness of the green walnuts. The wooden wine barrels provide a subtle touch of red fruits to the beer.

Aroma is tart notes of hay, wooden bretty notes and barnyard, as well as red berries, tannins and wooden barrels. Medium to full body, with fairly soft carbonation. Flavour is tart fruity notes, with hay, berries, tannins and wooden brett, as well as barnyard and wooden barrels. Dry finish. Balanced and moreish.
4.0 750ml wired cork bottle from Mikkeller webshop. Opened with a loud pop. Yellow gold colour, white foam head that dissipates away and aroma of citrus rind, funky. Taste is sour, lemon rind, fruity grains, nutty hint with barnyard funk and some drying tartness. Medium bodied, spritzy carbonation, dry soured finish. Very drinkable.
3.9 750ml from The Gull @ home shared with Alex and Ash. Appearance: nice a bit hazy straw color with a white head. Aroma: funky, somewhat fruity, with lots of barnyard notes. Taste: along the same lines. Overall: not sure where is walnuts in here, but it is definitely a nice and delicate Oude Gueuze, maybe with more tanins coming from the nuts.
4.6 Vintage 2016. Bottle from the VI Warsaw Beer Festiwal almost three years ago. The last bottle on this Festival. Bezcenne chwile.
3.9 Bottle sample at a tasting. 2017 edition. Thanks Tom. Cloudy orange, a bit green, with white head and some particles. The aroma has notes of funk, white wine, lots of wood, herbs, barnyard. The flavor is mild sweet and mild sour with notes of citrus yeasts, vinegar, white wine, "green", herbs. Dry, medium-bodied.
3.7 Bottle at a tasting. 2017ed. Hazy yellow. Funky with notes of wood and herbs. Sweetish sourish, lemon, oak, herbs, dry, astringent, white wine. Medium-bodied, flat.
3.3 750ml green cork and caged bottle. Pours a hazed amber, nice-looking white head for a lambic. Aroma is classic tart lambic, lemony, zesty, spice, soured sweet white wine, vanilla, sour candied stonefruit, touch of cotton candy. Flavor is tart and acidic, bitterness, funkier than some other Beersel's and with a firm bitterness. It is a bit less complex in the flavor basically sour and bitter, extremely pity and lemony, some oxidized notes and pear creep in as it warms. Great on the nose, favor could be a bit less one-dimensional. Probably would go better with food than on it's own.
4.3 Bottle: Poured a golden color lambic with a nice large off-white foamy head with good retention and some lacing. Aroma of funky ester with some green apple notes and oak is quite pleasant. Taste is a good mix of funky ester with some green apple notes, some oak, very subtle acidic notes with some light barnyard notes also noticeable. Body is about average with some lively carbonation. Super enjoyable with perfect mix of complexity and drinkability but I can’t say that walnut are easily identifiable in the flavours.
3.6 Wineglass showing pale amber with a finger of clean white foam. The nose shows moderately intense notes of brett and steel tank. The palate is medium bodied and moderately carbonated. Moderately tart with moderately intense notes of brett and a nutty finish.
3.9 Bottled. A hazy golden beer with a lazing beige head. The aroma has notes of brett, funk, lemons, and malt. The flavor is sour with notes of lemons, brett, funk, wood, and malt, leading to a tart finish.
4.2 Bottle. Unclear orange golden body with a big, fluffy white head. Nice funky aroma, pretty classics Oud Beersel with citric fruit, lemon, wood, cellar notes and Brett. Same goes for the flavor, its more complex than a ordinary lambic and if I didn't know I would have guessed that this was a Geuze, the walnut is not recognized by me but there is some kind of unusually fruit here that might as well be the green nut flavor. Fine body and long lasting aftertaste. Very refreshing, complex and tasty, wonderful.
5.0 Totally amazing sour, light notes of walnut, accurate sourness in balence of acidic and fruity one, light sweet aftertaste. Love it.

3.7 750 ml bottle, 2017 vintage, shared by Werckmeister, thanks! Amber, slightly hazy body, with a medium, frothy, lacing, slightly yellow. Aroma of barnyard, wood, musty, overripe fruits, moderate leather, some citrus, slight almond. Tastes pretty similar. Medium, slick mouthfeel, with a quite fizzy carbonation. Finishes a bit lighter, but smooth, wooden, medium funky, moderate leathery, musty, fruity, a bit citric. Very nice. Quite straight Lambic, with a bit more complexity and quite a lot of carbonation. Nice funk and oldish fruitnnotes, while I don't really get the walnut. Not among my favourite Oud Beersels, but still a lovely one. Score: 7 / 4 / 7 / 4 / 15

3.6 Rund säuerlicher Beginn, dessen trocken holzige Bitternote mich nicht auf Walnuss gebracht hätte. Hohe Süffigkeit trotz der Trockenheit, spritzig, langer Abgang. Lecker! 10/11/12/12//12
3.7 Bottle at tasting. Aroma of brett, horseblanket, funky barnyard, wheat and tart. Taste has mild grassy nuts, funk, horseblanket, tart, wheat and some acidic sourness. Good.
4.8 Bottle, 6.0%. Good acetic and mouthwatering aroma. Cloudy golden colour. Small stable white head. The flavour is sweeter than expected, and nicely acetic. Low bitterness, not even the woody bitterness that I often get from lambik. Very refreshing and good.
4.6 Bottle from my fellows in mysery at work, given to me for my 41st birthday. Pours hazy straw with rocky but stable white head. Vinous and dusty aroma with mild touches of herbs and hops. Exquisitely dry flavour with hints of yeast and fruit, and touches of cresh walnuts. Lingering, bitter and dry aftertaste with notes of maturing walnuts. Very nice. Thank you so much! Always happy to be 41.
3.8 Bottle. Golden colour with white head. Funk aroma. Sour, funk, some fruitness taste. Medium body.
4.0 Lett tåkete lys brun med fingerhøyt tykt hvitt skum. Lukter blomster, eple, vanilje, eikefat og toast. Middels fylde. Sur smak, noe krutt, syrlige epler, mineralsk og noe blomster.
4.0 Bottle at a tasting. Not much walnut character present. Actually we are divided 50:50 between those who can and can not detect it. I can't. Otherwise a really fine lambic with moderate sourness, moderate funk of moderate intensity - maybe too much to showcase the nut. Very tasty and very good though.
3.8 Shared bottle. Light golden color with medium white head. Aroma of yeast, funk, green walnuts. Sour taste, with wood, green walnut, spices, funk.
3.8 Flasa. Zlata farba, biela pena. Vona kyselkava, rozbity mlady orech. Chut riadne kysla. Prijemne
3.6 Aroma: Very funky, a lot of leather, peach, sweat, horse, strawberry, wood, grape. Some white fruit and floral notes. Appearance: Cloudy orange, large bubbly head. Some gushing after opening. Taste: Sour with some bitterness. Palate: Very high carbonation, medium body. Quite tannic. Overall: Very good funky aroma. It would be a great lambic were it not for the ridiculously high carbonation. I do not think the walnuts made any difference?
4.1 Bottle. Pours hazy orange with a large, rocky off-white head, long retention with sticky lacing. Heavy lactic sourness and acidity, green walnut notes, light cracker malt, cellar funkiness, soft white wine (Pinot Grigio) character and a bone dry finish. Medium body and moderate carbonation.
