Panil Barriquée (Sour) (European Version)

Panil Barriquée (Sour) (European Version)

Brewed for the Italian market and it is a middle Sour, with a ph of 3,85/3,90 of acidity.
Note that this is not the same Panil Barriquee (Sour) as the version exported to the US.

(Editor’s note) Recently only one version of Panil Barriquée Sour is produced. Unless you had an old bottle, you had the other one, not this one. [ Alex, 2012-03-13, mail from Panil to Mortlach, although we don’t know since when this version has not been produced ]

3.2 Bottle shared at my 30:th birthday tasting on May 5 (30 år av Surt). Courtesy of Ekstedt. Pours hazy brownish red with a small creamy offwhite head that quickly dissipates without leaving much trace. Smell is tiny sweet, tiny sour and metallic with chestnuts, wet soil, asparagus, hazelnuts and moss. Taste is tiny sweet and sour with hazelnuts, wood, sheet metal, sour cherries, vinegar and hints of burnt sugar. Mouthfeel is tart, slightly dry and medium bodied. Finish is sour with lemon zest, hazelnuts, wood, hay, lemon juice and cherries.
3.6 Bottle at "30 år av surt", on May 5, 2012 in Göteborg. cuivre, col léger beige.
Pours murky mahogany with a small beigish head. Aroma is very nutty asparagus earthy damp soapy. Flavor is sour pungent and vinegar in front more fruits and aceton in middle finishing sour vinegar. Nothing to hang in the xmas tree.
3.8 Bottle.Pours cloudy deep amber with an off-white head. Aroma of sour red berries, funk, leather, malt and grains. Flavor is sour and fruitiy with some funk, leather, sour berries and a dry finish. Medium to thin body, average carbonation. Nice sour beer.
3.2 Bottle enjoyed at home Copper clear, big beige head. Smells of malts, funky barnyard and some malts. Taste is light malty, light sweetness, meeting a medium sour acidity, also some dry fruit feel that is unpleasent, also tart apples and some berries. Light body, medium carbonation. Some fruity bitterness in tthe end. Totally a very drinkable sour from Italy, still there is room for improvements
3.0 Bottle 75 cl. Orange, hazy with a large lightorange head. Aroma of sour-fruits and some yeast. The taste is offcourse sour with a fruitylike enidng.
3.8 Bottle aged almost a year. Amber/brown pour, 1 finger of head and some lively carbonation considering the age. Sour aroma, sour cherry, under-ripe red apple, green apple, Chokecherry, pincherry. Sour taste - Oak, Sour cherry, a bit of sour candy, funky, spice, balsamic vinegar. Slightly thin body. Would take some verve to drink more than a bomber of this. Will try the US version next month.
3.4 Bottle at home. Clear and dark amber colour. An amazing light beige, frothy ,thick and big head. A pleasant sour aroma of bitter berries, rowanberries, oak and horse blanket. The flavours are also dominated by sour oak. The bitter berries are a bit sweeter in the mouth and hint of sweet malts. Medium lasting bitterness. Over a nice sour ale and well-balanced. The taste is very lasting.
3.5 Bottle, bbq in Italy somewhere. Murky muddy brown, lots of floaty bits. Aroma of fruit and jam. Flavour is sour and dry, a little woody. I enjoyed it and would drink it again.
3.8 Bottle from Vinmonopolet, Norway. Poured into a wine glass, as that’s the most appropriate glass I have. Huge fizz when I took the cap off. Pours a ton of foam with a little bit of clear, amber beer underneath. The head quickly settles into a smaller, creamy head, revealing a lot more beer underneath than I’d thought. The color is, as mentioned, amber/brown, very clear, tons of bubbles rising up. Sour and sweet aroma with some funky notes. Light body, soft carbonation. The flavor is oak, citrus, notes of green and red apples and raspberries. In my mouth the sourness is "medium". Also, a tiny hint of metallicness in the finish, along with a slight bitterness/tartness, and a hint of nuts. But, all these flavors are somewhat subtle, and overall I think it’s rather neutral tasting. No flavor leaps out in your face, it’s just a very nice sour ale with lots of subtle flavors. Interesting!
4.0 Bottle (75cl) from Vinmonopolet (Vika), Oslo. Huge offwhite slowly-receding head that clings to the glass with lots of lacing. Clear, red/amber colour. Aroma of barnyard, grape kernels, red fruits, vinegar, yeast. Very well-balanced taste, dominated by acidity, but countered by just the right sweetness and a mild bitterness. Tart finish. Medium body (light at this ABV, making it highly drinkable).
3.8 Dark amber beer, little white head. Aroma lightly tart, malty, floral, citrus fruit and sour apple. Flavour is quite tart, light sweet malty background. Fruity: citrus, apricot and apple. Short finish. (From 75cL bottle, courtesy of RM)
3.0 Flaske 0,75l fra Vinmonopolet i Tromsø. Drukket hjemme 26 Jul 11. Mørkt aprikosfarget. Litt uklar. Kjempehøyt skum som daler sakte. Dempet syrlig fruktaroma. Smaken er svakt syrlig med innslag av plommer og eple. Litt aprikos. Bra! Mye sedimenter i siste kvelling.
2.2 Tasted November 17. 2011: Italian sour beer. A bit light body but very fresh. A very special apricot color.
3.6 Bottle 75 cl from erzbierschof.ch. Beer with acidic and floral aromas, cherry, sour drops. The taste is fresh, sour, vinous with notes of wood, balsamic, green apple, citric and pepper. Final with red berries and tartness. Very refreshing.
3.6 Medium sourness, some bitterness to the finish. All over good on the palate, citrusy, fruity, hints of raspberries. Aroma is fruity. Head was tan and rocky at first then settled down, colour of beer dark amber. Good carbonation. (70 cl bottle)
3.4 02.09.2011. 0,75l Bottle. Vinmonopolet Haugesund. Hazy, dark brown amber colour with large off-white head. Sour aroma dominated by acidic notesof sour yeast. Lots of good flavours and this beer get better the more you drink. Moderate bitterness, with moderate long lasting aftertaste.
3.8 75 cL bottle from the LCBO, served in a snifter. Pours clear copper with a huge, frothy tan head and intense carbonation. The head remains and leaves large amounts of fine lace. On the nose, there are notes of sour cherry, red wine, oak barrels and earth. The flavour is dry and moderately sour with plenty of oak, sour fruit and berries. Oak barrels come through nicely, imparting a rounded complexity. It is sour, but not overwhelmingly so. Caramel malts and a note of wheat come through. The finish is long, dry and sour with red wine and lots of oak. On the palate, it is light-medium in body with a smooth, watery texture and intense carbonation. Overall, this is an excellent sour with plenty of oak and a nice red wine character. Delicious. 2011-08-29
3.8 (Bottle, 0.75 - bottled on July 2009, from Systembolaget, 20110828) The beer poured reddish brown and quite clear. Its head was fizzy, white and it disappeared very quicky. Aroma had berries, vanilla, earth, wood and sourness. Palate was medium bodied, fizzy and dry with quite high carbonation. Flavours were malts, sweetness, sourness, berries, wood, vanilla, tartness and very low bitterness. Aftertaste was sour, earthy and mildly bitter. An enjoyable sour beer where nothing was too extreme. The fizziness was a bit disappointing.
3.7 750 ml bottle bought at the LCBO on Rideau and King Edward (Ottawa), on May 1st, 2011. Ruby orange, thin head. Very bitter aroma of course, hints of wheat and berries. Bitter fruit taste with hints of malted wheat, tobacco aftertaste. Well, it’s very drinkable and bitter!
3.6 Bottle. Pours dark amber, with a colossal head. Very pleasant aroma of oak, grapes, cognac, port, malts and some acidic tones. Flavour is lots and lots of fruitiness, and a good sourness. Finish is a tad to sweet, but overall a very good beer.
3.6 0.75l bottle. This is a light cloudy reddish brown beer with a lasting lacing off-white head. Looks quite nice in the glass! Nice and light sour aroma with notes of cherries, wood, tart apples, ripe fruits and something reminding me of nuts. Average carbonation, oily mouthfeeling, and medium-bodied. Nice and light sour flavors; light tart green apples, wood, cherries?, chicken-juices?, lime and something reminding me of chocolate. Really light drinkable and quite nice.
3.2 Pours an offwhite fizzy head, which disappears quickly, with a dark copper color body. You can tell by the smell that the taste will be dominated by citrus. Tastes of concentrated lemon juice, sweet vinegar and cherries. Quite refreshing, but taking the size of the bottle into consideration, you ought to share it with a friend.
3.9 Previously lost notes from GBBF 2006. A murky amber with a huge off-white head. Sour and slightly woody aroma. For a sour ale it’s pretty mild and almost sweet but still very good.
3.6 This is the Italian version, the bottle is completely in Italian, and it is sour but not the sourest purposely infected bottle. Decent drinkability, reddish colour. Smooth, above average mouthfeel. Controlled mouthfeel, well malted.
