Pelican Mother of all Storms

Pelican Mother of all Storms

English-style barleywine ale aged in bourbon barrels.

There are many storms out there, all of them perfect in their own way. But there is only one Mother of all Storms and it only happens in Pacific City, Oregon. Based on Stormwatcher’s Winterfest, our English-style barleywine, Mother of all Storms spent many months aging in Kentucky bourbon barrels. Now at its peak, Mother of all Storms delivers deep flavors of toasted malt, bourbon and oak. The finish rewards with whispers of vanilla, toffee and caramel. Best enjoyed with gusts exceeding 60 mph.

4.9 2016 vintage on tap at Beer Stein, Eugene. Black pour under a thin light tan rocky head. Big bourbonny brown sugar nose with oak and deep toasty black malt and a hint of caramel. Bold huge stoutly flavor that’s chocolaty and warm and sweet and caramelly and bourbonny, with a smack of brown sugar and a lingering bourbon tone with touches of cherry and vanilla and more toasty dark malt depth and cocoa and toffee and bourbon. Amazing.
4.1 22 oz bottle shared, thanks Tyler/Lauren. Dark brownish with light tan head. Aromas of dark fruit, caramel. Tastes of dark fruit, caramel, toffee, grains. Medium body with a dry finish. Nice stuff.
3.8 Reddish brown colored with a tan head that lasts fairly long given the ABV. Aroma of bourbon, vanilla, caramel, sugar, wood. Full bodied, alcohol present, thick malt flavors dominate - chewy with vanilla, wood, caramel, brown sugar. Nice one.
4.2 Bomber; Big old scent, Big old brute; Thick, sticky, and unfiltered; 14% but well aged and tame, not boozy; characteristic whiskey aura, date, fig, leathery caramel; Don't be shy folks, but brace yourselves just the same; sweet and clingy...long, smooth, near-cloying finish; in short - yummmm. Quite an excellent barleywine from a local pnw brewer!
4.3 Holy shit. Bottle shared with Gus while watching soccer. Aroma is caramel, bourbon, barrel, sweet treats, some dark fruit, really really nice. Appearance is brown, light tan head, mostly clear. Taste is caramel, bourbon, barrel, toffee, malt, dark fruit, great. Mouthfeel is medium to heavy body, light carbonation, balanced caramel bourbon barrel dark fruit aftertaste. Overall, this is real fucking good.
4.0 Heel donker rood-bruine kleur tot bijna zwart met minieme beige schuimkraag. Geur is zoet, hout, alcohol, caramel met toast aspecten. Creamy, zoet, caramel en licht geroosterde toetsen.
4.1 2015 edition. long anticipated bottle, kept myself since then. First beer of 2018 seemed like the right occasion to finally open it up ! Pours very dark redbrown, nearly black. Decent off-white head, medium stability. Smell is chewy, wood, mild toasty, vanilla, high on wood, minor bourbon notes. Very creamy. Sweet, toffee maltyness. very rich with not much noticable booze ( impressive, at 14 ABV ) Taste is full, creamy, vanilla, toffee, mild roasty, very oaky, mild bourbon, sweet, intense, medium-thick body with medium carbo. Ends a bit boozy , but nowhere near the 14 % anticipation. very well made without going to far away from what the style prescribes.
4.3 Bottle share at Mon Petit Cafe Stuttgart. Aroma is lots of nuts, raisins, oak, herbs. Sweet, full bodied, lots of caramel, vanilla, oak, raisins, warming finish.
4.5 Bottle thanks to Niels. Pours dark brown with a Brown head. Aroma of dark sweet malts, caramel. Butterscotch, sweet bourbon and ripe sweet fruits. Textbook BA-ES-BW. Taste of caramel, butterscotch, sweet bourbon, ripe fruits, slight coconut, syrup and slight nuts. Wow! This is fucking good.
4.4 Bottle from a trade. Many thanks Ryan! Hazy amber/brown colour, some foam. Very complex nose of raisins, plums, sweet bourbon, toast and oak. Very nice sipper.
4.3 On tap @ Toronado Seattle. Pours super dark inky thick black with thin creamy mocha head. Aroma is sweet dark chocolate, soy sauce umami notes, sweet boozy flavor that lingers through the back. Taste is super thick sticky mouthfeel, rich roasty toffee malt, big oaky boozy scotch barrel notes on the back. Really rich, layered, and delicious - more of a modern barleywine style than a classic English version. Tons of big flavor here.
4.1 Pours black with low tan head. Aroma of bourbon, chocolate, coffee, dried fruit. Taste is boozy, dried fruit, alcohol. Rich and creamy body with soft carbonation.
4.6 Tap @ Toronado Seattle. Pours very dark brownish black with a small brown head. Aromas of vanilla, caramel, dark chocolate, light booze, bread. Taste has a lot of caramel, sweet malt, bourbon fudgey goodness, light bitterness, vanilla, booze, bread. Fuck me.
3.8 Bottle shared by wickedestman, many thanks. Dark brown with a tan head. Big, decadent bourbon and vanilla aroma with loads of caramel and toffee. Big oaky barrel taste with vanilla, bourbon and chocolate. Very dry.
3.9 A very nice barleywine. Not the most unique, but does the basics very well. Very smooth. Pours a deep orange-red with a tan head. Smells of strawberries and citrus. Taste is smooth and sweet, everything works great together. Starts with citrus, strawberries, followed by whiskey and caramel in the finish. Vanilla aftertaste. Very nice!
4.6 Bomber, 2016 vintage. Wonderful boozy dark fruit aroma with notes of caramel, toffee, vanilla, bourbon and oak. Pours deep caramel brown with a very thin light brown head that has no retention or lacing. Starts with rich booze soaked dark fruit flavors with nice notes of vanilla and bourbon that also has a rich, full body and nice smooth mouthfeel. Finishes smooth and boozy with delightful caramel and toffee flavors with a bit of oak and warming alcohol. A nice winter beer, but so good I wouldn’t mind it anytime!
4.7 This beer is extremely amazing. Very surprising for Pelican but they knocked out of the park on this one. Cheers!
4.2 Bottle, 2015 vintage held in the cellar for just about one year. Dark brown pour with a finger of creamy tan head. Powerful aroma centered around the barrel treatment; bourbon, vanilla, caramel, and hints of hops. The flavor is truly terrific and one of the best barreled barley wines I can recall to date… lots of barrel influence without being overly hot or too firm in center stage. Big bourbon sweetness, vanilla, caramel, dark fruits, a little wood, and just enough hops. I’ve heard that this can be pretty hot when fresh; I can only attest to a bottle with a year of age on it; fantastic stuff.
4.0 Pours a opaque with a thick small khaki head and great lacing. Smell is of dark chocolate, espresso, and vanilla. Taste is creamy, strong, dark chocolate, licorice, vanilla, bourbon, and roasted malt.
4.2 On tap at Elizabeth Station. Vintage 2016. Pours an aopaque very dark brown with a dark beige head. Aroma and taste are dark fruits, bourbon, molasses, very sweet, some candies’ notes, slight sourness. One more loooong seeper. Great stuff.
4.2 Pours very dark brown, almost black with a low tan head. Aromas of muscovado sugar, roasted nuts, leather, caramel, oak, bourbon. Massive depth. Taste is roasted and caramel sweetness with bourbon character and syrupy notes. Mouthfeel is medium bodied with low carbonation.
4.3 Pours dark dark brown wirh minimal brown head Aromas har lovely notes of bourbon, vanilla, caramel, muscavado, burned caramel, hints of dark fruits Taste has notes caramel, bourbon, vanilla, muscavado, dark fruits, figs, dades, hints of liqourize, leather, tobacco Mouthfeel is full bodied, sweet, low carbonation and medium bitter finish. Very nice!
4.1 On tap release 2016@:pours deep mahagony color, slighly clear, with tan off-white head, which transforms itself to a ring around the glass. Aroma-Flavor: intense malt profile, which takes on toasted toffee, caramel, hint of dark chocolate, dried fruits esters, hint of vanillin & gentle sherry-like note deep in the background. Finish is dry, slightly sticky, body is medium to full, texture is velvetly, carbonation is low. Alcohol is very well hidden. Release 2015 with 14%abv. From 22oz. Bottle@: pours dark brown with foamy brown head. Light roast~rich malt flavor (caramel, toasted toffee, chocolate, sulfury=hint of soy sauce)~vanillin~bourbon~viscous sticky texture. Thick. 4.2
4.4 Super tasty with small sips. Its a smorgusboard of complex flavors. At $9 a glass I better like it! On tap at Rogue Growler with Celina.
4.0 2014 and 2015, side by side. Big malt nose, raisins, caramel, booze, dried fruits galore, some orange. Great raisiny flavor with caramel and treacle. Silky and smooth, the 2014 was for me a step above the 15.
4.1 Bomber, 2014 vintage. Nose of strong sugary stone fruit and dark fruit, some barrel, along with alcohol fumes. Clear dark reddish/brown color. Super sweet, caramelly, vanilla, light bourbon, and some slightly tart dark fruit. Heavy body, very smooth and slick. Rich, ripe stuff. A bomb on the tongue.
4.4 Excelentes y complejos aromas.
4.2 2016 bottle purchased at The Davis Beer Shoppe. The aroma is essentially dominated by sweetness, vanilla, and bourbon. There might be a touch of caramel present. I don’t really smell the base beer in any way. The beer itself has a brownish-yellow head that is fairly strong, and a mahogany, slightly transparent body. If I didn’t know any better, I’d say this is a BA Impy Stout at this point. Starts with a sweet, sugary, sticky, caramel and toffee flavoring. A little buttery diacetyl is also present, but I think that’s ok in a big English Barleywine. The middle has a little bit of bourbon and vanilla flavors, but the bourbon is surprisingly not over-done flavor-wise. This finishes with some leather and tobacco. It’s a bit warming, and the ethanol is surprisingly well-hidden. The mouthfeel on this is just the right balance of carbonation to make this dangerously drinkable. This is decadent, and a little on the sweet side. Definitely something I would enjoy drinking 8oz of, but 22oz is going to be tough to drink solo.
4.5 2016 bottle. Bourbon, molasses, brown sugar, oak, and syrup dominate the aroma. This beer is quite pungent. The head is ever so wispy, and fades fast. Flavors are much the same, with the added warmth. The heat from the alcohol is pleasant, and soothes the body into complete relaxation. This is a beer, when consumed alone, brings you into the land of "Who Gives a Shit?". The texture is rich, and slick. Quite honestly, I’ve quite had it with the barrel-aged trend, but Pelican has been brewing this beer prior to that trend, and they’re doing a damn good job with it. For me, the texture is hard to beet. Every year I can count on this being just as great as the previous year. Well done.
4.4 22oz bottle of 2015 release. Pours a dark brown color with a bit of head. Delicious malty bourbon aroma. Smooth malty flavor with good balance of bourbon. Alcohol well hidden. Was much hotter when newly released.
