Penn Weizen

Penn Weizen

Authentic wheat beer, brewed in the Southern German tradition, won the Silver Medal in 1997 and the Gold Medal at the 2000 in GABF.. Penn Weizen is top-fermented, cask-conditioned, and very effervescent with a slight hint of tangy clove flavor.

2.9 Sample pour at a festival. Pours hazy brownish yellow with creamy white head. Aroma is banana, bready malts, floral notes, cloves, and some orange zest. Flavor is bready malts, banana, sugar, and Belgian yeast esters; a little thin with a dry finish. Light/medium body and low carbonation.
3.3 Draft at Beer and Bacon. Pours opaque orange gold with a fizzy white head. Tastes lightly sweet, like wheat and banana, light orange. Light body and low carbonation. Smells like sweet banana and wheat, light bubblegum.
3.1 Tap. Pours cloudy yellow with a medium, frothy white head, medium retention with light lacing. Aroma is cooked bananas, spicy and earthy wheat malt. Flavor is earthy and spicy wheat malt, banana and cloves with a dry finish. Medium body and carbonation.
3.6 A relatively light, clean hefeweizen, very well-executed. Moderate banana aroma, without being too estery, a few hints of spice. I thought this was among the best examples of an American brewery’s attempt at emulating the hefeweizen style. Not the most complex beer, but smooth and easy drinking, and very enjoyable.
3.0 Hazy straw yellow body, no head, no lacing. Orange peel, wheat, banana, and clove. Medium bodied, gentle carbonation, mild finish. Ok.
3.2 Pours a hazy pale yellow. Aroma of cloves and spice. Taste is spicy and clove with a mild after taste. Not bad.
3.0 Bottle. Golden yellowish color. Aroma is cloves, slight lemon wheat. Light sweetness. Average carbonation. Meh.
3.0 bottle thanks to adnielsen. pours a bright cloudy wheat, with aroma of citrus and banana. taste is piney and citrusy, pretty good.
4.0 Bottle @ home via trade with weihenweizen. Pours a hazy/cloudy yellow orange appearance with a spritzy white head that doesn’t have the best retention. Tons of spices, banana bread, lots of clove, somewhat herbal effervescent aroma that is quite nice. Slightly sweet wheat, very chewy herbal, tangy spicy, clove, nutmeg flavor. Very nice American-made Hefeweizen.
2.6 From tap at Local 44. Pours hazy yellow with a huge white head. Aroma is estery and light fruity. Bitter and light spiced to herbal wheaty into the finish. Ends dry and medium bitter.
3.5 Hazy golden yellow with thin head. Banana and clove in the nose and taste. Nice spice note. A very enjoyable wheat.
3.0 12oz bottle from ABC on Betton. Yellow pour with thin white head. Aroma is banana, wheat, clove. Tastes are lemon-lime, clove, spice, bread, banana. Sharp carbonation. Ok.
2.5 12oz bottle, from Country Fresh. $1.69. Mildly hazy darker golden color. Thin bubbly white head. Loudly fades to minimal / nothing. Medium body. Pronounced carbonation. More dry finish. Light brown, lighter vanilla in the flavor. Light metallic. Little bitter taste, not very sweet. Light cheap bite in the finish. Not bad, but not a great hefeweizen
3.1 Nice amber/gold color; Medium slightly creamy body; Aroma of wheat, & rich clove; Flavor of wheat, some yeast, clove, bananas, and light citrus; Fairly decent.
3.8 12 oz bottle. Very very effervescent ! A wonderful aroma. Lemony, zesty with some banana .Very well done. Up there in its class.
2.0 Draft. Poured cloudy gold with almost no head. Aroma and flavor were lots of clove and banana. Very sweet, slightly tart. Quite one dimensional. Mouthfeel was a bit thin and flat. Not diggin’ it.
3.0 Pours a mostly clear gold with a thin white head. Aroma has banana, clove, and grass. Flavor follows suit...a bit of spicy/citrusy sweetness. Mouthfeel is medium and the finish is grainy/spicy and dry.
2.8 Pours a nice golden orange with a minimal white head. This beer has a sour citrus flavor with a lot of banana also. there is olso a sour grain flavor with a lot of spices in the back ground.
3.0 Cloudy gold with a light head cover and no lace. Taste starts with caramel and light malt, adding spices, especially coriander and cloves, as it moves to a fizzy, lightly bittered, finish. As the finish dissipates, there is a mis-step: the bitter gives way to a sour aftertaste. It nearly works. There are better ones out there.
3.8 Refrigerated 12 oz. brown bottle poured into a glass. Pours beautiful trnnslucent golden with small white head which completely dissapated fairly quickly. No lacing, medium body, low carbonation, and clove aroma. Taste is nice rich clove, slightly tart lemon, some spice, and some banana. You had me at clove, great american hefeweizen.
3.8 Bottle. Banana, orange, yeasty wheat, and clove aroma. Hazy golden yellow with a large white head. Yeasty wheat, banana, and clove flavor. Medium crisp body, lively carbonation.
1.2 Decent aroma and thicker than expected dark yellow pour with a simple but smooth taste and minimal mouthfeel.
4.3 Bottle. Lemon, banana, light clove, and wheat malt aroma. Cloudy golden yellow with nice head. Mildly sweet lemon, banana, clove and full wheat malt flavor. Full bodied. A world class weizen.
3.6 Poured cloudy minimal head. Lots of clove aroma. Taste was light sweetness, with cereal and clove flavors. Light body thin feel, soft carbonation. Great beer to drink in the hot summer months.
3.1 Bottle. Strong wheat scent, a sweet tinge. Pale yellow pour. Light body with a frothy bubbly mouthfeel. Mellow citrus taste with a grainy wheat finish. ---Rated via Beer Buddy by stoneagerad
3.0 Pours cloudy yellow with a fast diminishing white head. Smells malty with spice. Taste is med wheat body with some spice and citrus. After taste is too thin in my opinion. A little watery. But still is "refreshing". Not too bad, but there are better out there.
3.4 12oz bottle at Dada’s in Delray. Occasionally Dada’s will have a decent craft beer selection of about 4 bottles. This was a pretty standard Hefe. Served with a lemon on the rim, which I ditched into my water, the aroma was citrusy with hints of orange peel. Pretty good but nothing out of the ordinary.
3.2 12 ounce bottle thanks to Dan. Pours a totally opaque orange color with a small white head. A sweet grainy and lemon nose. A strong flavor of bananas, some lemon and spices. A very interesting Hefe, seems like a very traditional version. Light palate and almost no head after a bit. I like it.
2.6 translucent gold, large bubbled small white head. Nose is autolysis, light banana, citrus. More wheat early and mid, light banana and run er as well, stronger grain finish. A bit chalky in the finish, gritty even.
