Pozharnik is an intensely flavored Russian Imperial Stout infused with espresso and (vanilla beans which are new for 2007) and an improved mouthfeel that compliments its rich chocolate & roasted malt character. Pozharnik is guaranteed to warm a winter chill with it’s increased ABV now at 10%. Undertones of dark fruit (raisin & plum) and licorice with low bittering hops make this vintage beer worthy of cellaring for many years to come. Finishing notes of whiskey aromatics are once again brought on by the aging process in a “single barrel” whiskey cask.

3.8 Black body with a creamy, lightly brown head. Aroma of chocolate, coffee, liquorice. Moderately bitter, lightly sweet flavour. Not bad at all but quite subtle and not very special.
3.8 Barrel-aged 2008 vintage. 1L bottle shared at a local tasting. Pours dark brown to black with minimal head & mild lace. Sharp malts and booze dominate the nose. Roasty malts, whiskey, coffee, and more booze. Taste follows the nose. Roasted malts and espresso lead the way; toffee in tow. Solid alcoholic warmth, but not too harsh. A great blend overall. Medium-bodied, low carbonation. This brew would certainly benefit from a bigger body.
3.6 Bottle at Paul’s gathering. Pours black. Tan head. Nose/taste of espresso, roast black and chocolate malts and whiskey barrel. Dry roasted black coffee and malt finish. Medium body.
/10/9/11/10/9
3.7 Bottle [1L] shared with HogTownHarry, garthicus, GregClow, jerc & mabel -- c/o HogTownHarry. 2006 Vintage. Pours black, oily-looking, with no head. Malty aroma along with coffee, light leafy hops, chocolate and dark fruit. Slightly watery, but still nice, flavour of coffee, roasted malt, chocolate, a hint of smoke and a dry roasty finish. Average to medium bodied. Good stuff, I quite liked it.
3.4 [3625-20110304] 1L bottle. Rich wine aroma characteristics and lots of light roast and wood notes. Black body with a quick foamy brown head. Sweet figgy fruit roast flavour only hints at coffee or espresso. Medium-full body. Good, has held up well. (7/3/7/3/14) 3.4 (c/o HogTownHarry, w/ him, blankboy, garthicus, GregClow, jerc)
3.5 2011-03-04. Very dark brown-black body with a small tan head. 3+ Interesting aroma, sweet toffee/caramel, light roasty malt accents, sweet sugary malt notes. Flavour is similar with a sweet malty core, caramel/dark sugar notes, light toasty notes, muted thin espresso character in the background. Smooth average plus bodied palate has likely thinned a lot with age but is surprisingly decent. This has aged rather interestingly, it almost seems more like a doppelbock than an imperial stout at times. Well rounded and pretty drinkable, but overly restrained at times. 2006 Vintage Bottle shared by HogTownHarry
3.9 Thanks to HogTownHarry. Appearance: Pitch black, quite oily, tiny brown head. Aroma: quite alcoholic, almost altar wine like, malty, treacle like Flavour: Syrup, malt, molasses, a little coffee, can’t detect a huge amount of espresso. A little chocolate with a boozy finish. Not bad.
3.3 1 liter bottle 2008 vintage sampled 1/18/2009 Pours a solid black with the faintest of ruby highlights on the outer edges. smallish tan head leaves a little lace on the way down. Smells of licorice, dried dark fruit, and a faint coffee/roast in the back. Taste is sweet, a bit of licorice, some bitter roast and chocolate linger in the finish. Body is medium, mouthfeel is oily/creamy, carbonation is low but adequate. Decent brew, not the best RIS out there, but a nice drinker. I would have liked a bit more body and a bit more roast in this one.
3.5 5th Annual Epic and Rare gathering, sampled from same bottle as dkachur. Standard black, pretty much no head. Coffee and chocolate aroma. Flavor is chocolate and bread. Coffee faint , but goes fast. Probably a bit past its peak at this point. RIP.
3.9 2008 1L swingtop at the 5th Annual Epic Beer Tasting in Richmond, VA, November 28, 2010. Pours a dark brown color with a tan frothy head. Decent head retention and lacing. Aroma of roasted malts, smoke, chocolate, caramel and toffee. The taste is roasted malts, caramel, toffee, bitter hops, nuts, smoke, coffee. Medium-full bodied.
3.4 Received this in a trade a while back, and was surprised at the size of the bottle (I assumed it was a 750), so I decided to save it for a tasting. Thankfully the opportunity arose last Friday night. Poured a deep, dark black color, with a bit of smallish tan head. Great coffee/mocha aromas. Somewhat thinnish on the palate, with good coffee flavors and a hint of bourbon/vanilla.
3.3 1 litre swing top bottle poured a clear dark reddish brown nearly black with a lingering ring of brown foam. Aromas of roasted malt, coffee, bitter chocolate and vanilla. Palate was medium to full bodied and smooth. Flavors of roasted malt, coffee, bitter chocolate, light vanilla and light earthiness with a smooth dry lingering roasty coffee finish.
3.1 I’m not entirely sure how fair it is to review this beer, because I bought it at about 4 PM and while I was walking around the city carrying it something went wrong and it started to leak despite the lid being apparently well secured. Nevertheless, the pour was still quite nice so I’m not going to be too generous to the overall beer. It was black with a nice tan head of good size for the small pour I gave myself to start. The aroma was somewhat strange, moderately funky or possibly even tart with dominant coffee notes and slight hints of vanilla. Didn’t notice the whiskey. The flavor was initially quite funky/tart which leads me to believe something may have happened in that long six hours. But as the beer warmed, the cocoa/espresso flavors really came to the fore. Maybe the bottles were naturally infected? I dunno. I’d like to try this again but doubt I will get the chance; it seems like it could have been a very good beer but the mouthfeel was way too watery and the flavors too muddled for me to praise the bottle I had.
3.8 28 Blind tasting at Papsoe 27-03-2010: Bottle. Spare bubbly white head that mostly diminished. Spare display of lacework. Black color. Aroma of dried fruit, mild toasted malt, hint of wood. Over the palate came light liquorish, mild alcohol and some light roasted malty and chocolate like notes. Medium bodied with a soft carbonation. Moderated sweet flavor with some counter bitterness. Chocolate like sweet malty finish with a twist of bitterness. 8 / 3 / 8 / 3 / 16 = 3.8
3.9 Aged 3 years. Pours deep black into a snifter. No head from aggressive pour. Oak, vanilla and espresso aromas. Vanilla upfront with an espresso middle and a lasting, warming oak and whiskey finish.
3.6 Bottled. A pitch black with a thin dark brown head. The aroma has notes of roasted malt, alcohol, and wood. The flavor is sweet with notes of roasted malt, lots of vanilla, wood, and malt, leading to a dry vanilla finish.
3.5 Tasting at Papsø Black color; nearly no head. Chocolate aroma and flavor, sweetish, but the body in not strong; it has traces of vanilla, leather and tobacco; the bitterness is not strong, and the final is quite short. Unimpressive.
3.6 #28 - Amerikaner Blind-Smagning 27-Marts-2010 hos Papsoe. Almost black (red glow) - offwhite head. Milkey, lactose, coffee, high coffee, light smokey, cocoa, light bitterness, grassy, burned, rubber. OK.
3.6 Bottle. Dark brown almost black body with a small tan head. The aroma is sweet roasty, milky, chocolate and coffee. The flavour is milky roasty, chocolate and some caramel. Bit disappointing.
3.7 #28 at papsoe’s blind tasting almost black, small offwhite head faint roasted grains, faint dark caramel, faint dark chocolate in the aroma flavor is licorice, roasted grains, malty sweetness, faint woody notes,
3.7 Bottle #28 at Papsø’s blindtasting. Clear red brown coloured with a small beige head. Sweet aroma of caramel, dried fruits, dark chocolate and rye bread. Sweet and fruity flavour of caramel, dark chocolate and rye bread with notes of hops. Hoppy finish.
3.6 Bottle @ Papsø. Tasted blind. Pours black with a small off white bubbly head. Nose is mellow and mildly roasted. Smooth, roast, chocolate and coffee. Milky chocolate. Smooth
3.5 Bottle 100 cl. Courtesy of Tweety. Pours a clear dark brown with a tint of red and a smallish beige head. Some chocolatey dark malts in the nose. Medium body, very dark malts - but not overly burned. The finish however is massively bitter - probably from both malts and hops. 270310
3.9 (1L fliptop bottle thanks to BA blatherbeard) Pours medium clear brown with light bubbles. Nose of gingerbread, vanilla, chocolate and fudge. Taste of coffee, cream, roasted grains with a medium thick body.
3.6 Draft at Teresa’s in Wayne. Pours solid coffee black with a thin, rich caramel colored head. Aroma of esspreso beans, roasted malts, barley, toasted almonds, and hints of chocolate. Medium bodied, especially for an Imperial stout, and a slightly odd, slick mouthfeel. Finish is very nice and disguises the alcohol very well. Good stout.
3.8 08 vintage. pours black with no head but big bubbles. heavy burnt malts, faint coffee, alcohol, whiskey, vanilla. drinks smooth but thin with lots of coffee and vanilla dances on the finish. very tasty stuff.
4.0 Great beer. In my opinion, the chocolate flavor is stronger than the vanilla or expresso. Very sweet, but still quite enjoyable.
3.9 One-liter swing-top bottle from 2008. Pours a deep ruby brown, opaque, with a small light brown bubbly head. Aromas of roasted malts, coffee, caramel, and vanilla. Flavor is very sweet, much sweeter than I expected; roasty with espresso, bitter cocoa and milk chocolate, with a lactose finish like chocolate milk. Also present are sugar cane and molasses, contributing to the sweetness. This is smooth, pretty creamy, with low/medium carbonation, but a little thinner in body than I had hoped. I was also hoping to detect some of the touted whiskey, but no such luck. Overall, smooth, pretty good, but I anticipate that the sweetness could be offputting to some.
3.8 Bottle:   Black as night, thin sudsy off-white head, sparce lacing.   Roasted malt nose, slight chocolate and campfire.   Milk sweetened roasted malts on the nose.   Fairly strong coffee aspect.   Seems well balanced with the malts and the sweetness.   Not a big RIS by any means, but after 2 years it still has legs.   Body and mouthfeel are moderate.   Finishes with a sweet lactose infused espresso like roasted malt beverage.   Better than expected.   Held up well.
