Perennial Fantastic Voyage (2012-2017)

Perennial Fantastic Voyage (2012-2017)

Fantastic Voyage is a harmonic melange of coconut and Imperial Milk Stout brought to us by brewer Jim Leabig. Loads of coconut, lactose and black malt balance each other to provide flavors reminiscent of chocolate covered coconut with a finish smooth like silk sheets. Best enjoyed while listening to slow jams by candlelight.

3.2 On tap at Hops and Pie poured a clear dark reddish brown with a lingering ring of tan foam. Aromas of milk chocolate, coconut and light roastiness. Palate was light bodied and smoith. Flavors of cocoa, coconut and a hint of roastiness with a smooth lingering cocoa, coconut finish.
3.6 Tap. Jet black, nearly tan head. Cocoa powder, slight coffee, sweet and sour coconut, bit of papaya. Medium velvety body. Just ok with some odd sour notes.
4.1 Draft pours black with a brown head. Aroma of chocolate, coconut and some grains. Taste is chocolate, coconut, and coffee.
4.7 Beer school 10/17. Very very good you can actually taste the coconut in there really wonderful milk stout
4.1 Taste: robust semi sweet malt, coconut, chocolate, lactose, brown sugar, molasses. same with the nose. Reddish/black hue, mostly opaque, tan head with ring of lattice. Medium/Full body. Non sticky mouthfeel.
4.0 Draft at Craft Brewed. Pours a motor-oil colored, pitch black with a half a finger of foam that lingers. Dark cacao nib, coconut bars all over the nose....mounds bar. Candied, dried coconut flavor on the palate really stands out. Straight up tastes like a Mounds candy bar. Chewy coconut and cacao. Smooth and would go nice with dessert. Super well executed.
3.8 Bottle. Black pour with tan head. Coconut, roasted, chocolate and sweet aromas. Vanilla, chocolate, and almost fake coconut Flavors.
3.5 (750ml bottle) Pours a dark brown body with a small beige head. Aroma of chocolate, lactose, and roasted grain. Flavor of chocolate, coconut, lactose, roasted malt, and some coffee.
3.7 Bottle..Pour is black with a tan head..Nose is musty, spice, chocolate, coconut, roast, cream..Taste is lactose, musty, spice, chocolate, coconut..
3.3 Bottle thanks to Rainer. Pours black with small beige head that diminishes to nothing. The aroma is roast, coconut, cardboard. Medium mouth, coconut, roast, dark chocolate, good.
3.8 Dark brown to black pour with a tan head. The aroma has some nice chocolate, coconut and roasted malt. The flavor is similar. The chocolate and roasted malt notes go very well with the coconut, brown sugar and boozy character. Medium carbonation and thick mouthfeel.
3.7 Dark black. No head. Lots of sweet coconut, but like coconut sugar, not like coconut pie. Kind of creamy. Very smooth. Nice amount of chocolate cutting through. Thx Carter.
3.5 750ml bottle as shown, provided by the weasel .. . dark brown .. solid foam .. cooking chocolate and dark malts .. . medium sweetness .. . good stuff, a nice milk stout .. . . i think you’ll like this place, they’ll make a pizza pie with your choice of topping!
2.8 Pour on tap, dark brownish pour with off white head, aroma brought notes of cocoa, roast, coffee into a bit of soy sauce, booze, touch of acidic malt, slight smoky ash as well. Taste was a mix of ash, cocoa, roast into some anise, soy sauce, finishing sweet, slightly acidic.
2.8 Tasted in July 2013 from a capped 750mL bottle that Adam and I picked up during a baseball trip in St. Louis. Pours black with an average brown head that leaves average lace. The nose is super roasty with dark chocolate, coffee, and a bit of a soy sauce note. The flavor is sweet coconut up front with some milk chocolate, roast, and a soy sauce note suggesting oxidation or infection. The body is full with average carbonation and a long, almost sour, sweet and roasted finish. Will try this one again if I get the chance.
2.5 Drain pour. Bottle had clearly turned and was only a few months old. Very sour cherry notes and no hint of coconut. Hopefully just a bad bottle. Will try again and will update the rating.
3.4 Pour is black with a tight mocha head. Nose is heavy roast with a moderate sugary sweetness and a faint coconut touch. Taste is less roast but far more sweet. The coconut is more present and there is still some roast up front. The sweetness is overpowering and sugary. Full bodied and strong carbonation with an oily slick feel.
3.0 Bottle thanks to RobertDale! Pours dark black with a medium somewhat fizzy brown head that dissipates fairly quickly leaving a ring that laces pretty well. Aroma is surprisingly roasty, ash, chocolate, anise. Flavor is a bit acidic; tons of ashes here, a light tartness with the acidity; infected, methinks. No real coconut in the flavor, burned malts and some chocolate. Lightish body for the style, not really that silky either. This beer disappoints. Probably should have drank it upon receipt.
4.1 From notes, consumed on 5/7/13. Bottle poured into a Belgian snifter. Pours jet black with a finger of tan head. Aromas of caramel, coconut, dark fruit, chocolate. Tasting notes of coconut, chocolate, vanilla, caramel, lactose. Medium-full body with a semi-dry finish.
3.4 750 ml Bottle from Dawson’s while visiting Maryland. Bottled 4/2013,so I really should have paid attention to the dating when I bought this. i assume the coconut will be gone. Pours black with a one finger mocha colored head that looks lightly creamy. Sweet lactose and chocolate aroma, a good bit of roast, don’t get much coconut. Flavor is sweet lactose, graham cracker, and again not much coconut to speak of except maybe a hint of sweetness that isn’t lactose or chocolate. There seems to be a bit of cardboardy oxidation in this as well. Body is medium with medium plus carbonation. Not a bad beer, but I must say I am a little disappointed here but that may not be fair given the bottle date and known disappearance of coconut in these beers.
2.4 From Keir. Thanks! A: Pure black with no head. Good legs. N: Cocoa, lactose, coffee. Coconut is non-existent, and that’s incredibly disappointing. T: Smoke and slightly sour. Yeah, no. Where’s the malt. M: Lighter body, not impressive. O: Meh. Not sure what was going on with this, but after experiencing the heights of Last Snow, this is a failure that perhaps is infected.
3.4 Bottle. Silky mouthfeel. I am missing any evidence of coconut. A great silky smooth flavor like a milk stout. Pretty tasty.
4.4 Pitch black coloured body with a oily, two centimetre tall brown head and a completely opaque black glow. Aroma of rich roasted malt, alcohol, coconut, pandanus (used to make kaya), taro and hints of spices - perhaps some curry and kaffir lime? Full-bodied; Rich roasty malt at first then gives way immediately to sweetness from the coconut and pandan flavours, a touch of acid comes from limes and all blends well with some spices such as anise and fennel seed. Aftertaste is nice and robust with a great blend of spices, savoury, sweet and milky - very nice and well done, all with some alcohol, but not too much. Overall, I pretty much expected a beer like this, but with the reviews as low as they were, I didn’t think I’d get this - but this is a great beer, it’s that simple. The flavour profile is there, the complexity is great and the range in tastes from the initial taste to the last bit on the tongue at the end is amazing. Definitely worth trying if you can find this - even if you have to bring it back a few hundred miles! I sampled this 75 cL bottle purchased from Binny’s (South Loop) in Chicago, Illinois on 21-August-2013 for US$15.99 sampled at home in Washington on 08-January-2014 after a chilly night.
1.4 This one poured a still medium to dark brown with a beige head. Aroma was of of soy, ketchup, vinegar, and wocestershire sauce. Flavor was similar, definitely sour and or infected. Just not good at all.
2.2 Pours a deep brownish black with a slight brown head. Aroma of vinegar. Taste is tart like it was infected. What a disappointment. No coconut at all.
2.5 Bottle shared thanks to artmcd8. Poured black with decent tan head. Not the best aroma of sweet soy. Med carb med bod. Funky sour taste.
3.5 On tap at Capones 2013 Black Friday event. Black with a mocha creamy head, light bitterness, roasted malt, coffee grinds, alcohol, fresh coconut (mild). Moderate body and mild+ carbonation, some alcohol but smooth.
2.2 Deep black in color with light tannish head... Aroma of roasted malts, dark fruits, hint of sweetness... Flavor is intensely sweet, but also tart, like it's infected... Coconut is not prevalent, almost undrinkable... Haven't had a drain pour in a while, very disapponted...
3.7 Tap at Capones, Black Friday bash, Norristown PA 29/11/13. Pitch black with a good sized tan covering that clears to a swirl then settles down for the show. Nose is light roast, liqourice, dark toffee, burnt brown sugars, sweet notes. Taste comprises light roast, chocoalte, coconut shavings but pretty subtle, dark toffee fudge, a fairly sweet number. Medium bodied with bite, fine carbonation, sweet sugar infused closure. Decent enough impy, thankfully not infected, a little sweet and cloying towards the end, alcohol a touch hot at times.
Dommage.
