Modeled after a hugely popular English style of the day, it offers a garnet-brown color, deep, roasty aroma and flavor, balanced by some smooth maltiness and aggressive hopping.

2.6I thought this was one of the better beers in the pack. Aroma of roasted and caramel malts. Flavor was smooth and on the light side. Despite the description I didn’t smell or taste a decent amount of hops.
2.2Another beer from this place that came n a variety pack. Pours brown with a thin head. Weak aroma of chocolate, malt. Thin flavor, mild aroma. There beers don’t taste like anything, but out of the 4 this once is actually the best so far.
1.7Oh, this is weak. Mild roast and malty sweet. What a train wreck. Putrid, just putrid.
2.3Pours medium brown into the glass with a light head. Aroma is mainly grainy with a hint of cocoa if you really hunt for it. Flavor is all over the place with mainly bready malt upfront with a bit of a chocolaty finish. The description mentions aggressive hopping. Maybe they just chucked the small bit of hops in the kettle really aggressively because they sure didn’t add a lot. Starting to think the rest of this "Beers of America" pack is going to taste like tiny variations of the same beer. These beers scream mediocrity.
3.0Overall, I kinda found this brew to be a little weak for a porter. Weak roasted malt aroma and a weak coffee/chocolate flavor. But it’s weakness makes it an easy drinking session brew that’s not too complex. I dunno, I’m kinda torn. I’m leaning to thinking that it’s an average brew...
2.6Fine off-white head, surprisingly clear for a porter. Ruby red color, amber orange at the edge of the glass. No carbonation. Aroma of a dirty table at an old pub. Light body, reminds me of a lager. Flavor of an amber with a sourly bitter bite in the finish. I may have thought of this beer more highly had I lived when this style was popular.
3.0bronze pour with a two finger off white to tan head. slight aroma and taste of dark poasted malts. not bad
1.9Bottle poured into a pint glass produced a finger worth of tan that than disappears to almost no lace. The body of the brew was the typical black for a porter.
Aromas’ of roasted malts and a light coffee smell filled my nose. The flavor is rather subdued too a little watery not to much in the way of roasted malt flavor. The mouthfeel is rather light for a porter as well, good carbonation though.
It is drinkable it goes down really fast not what I expect in a porter as well. Really not to impressed with this brewery. Oh well live and learn
2.0Presentation: This is one of six beers from an eighteen pack labeled Beer of America, Historical Collection. The 18 pack also came with a nice book titled, The History of Beer in America. It was poured from a brown 12oz bottle into a pint glass. There appears to be no freshness date on the bottle.
Appearance: The body has a medium brownish/red color with a very clear appearance and visible carbonation. This seems very odd to me for the style. On top is a thin white head that quickly fades out to just a wispy thin ring of bubbles that makes no lacing at all.
Smell: Its aroma has hints of lightly roasted sweet malt and metallic/salty minerals with a touch of leafy hops.
Taste/Palate: There is a big buttery grain flavor with some lighter hints of roasted malt. The malt up front has modest sweetness is lightly balanced by some mineral/leafy hop flavor and mild bitterness. Into the finish there are some citrus orange peel and salty metallic notes. The body is light to medium with a slick fizzy texture.
Notes: There is nothing about this beer that reminds me of porter. The color seems to light, the flavor is to light and boring. There is no head retention at all and it has that same salty/metallic/diacetyl taste I found in all the others beers in this mixed pack. The best part of this 18 pack is the book that came with it.
2.8Gift from my Wisconsin hook up. Thanks Jamie. I’m a fan of porters. Brown pour with notes of coffee and smokey dark roast malts. Chocolate and wood taste. It was enjoyable. One of their better beers.
2.912oz bottle. Poured a medium brown color with a smaller sized off white head. Aromas of roastiness and some coffee. Roast dominates. Tastes of caramel, roast, and lighter coffee.
2.6I had this a long time ago, as it’s in my records, but I didn’t take down good tasting notes!
2.5Bottle from a nieghbor pours dark brown with whippy tan head loks great but that is as good as it gets just an average beer
3.1pours a dark brown, almost black color, with a tan head that is fluffy. the aromas is sweet malt, and some roasted malt, but over all just malty smelling. the taste is sweet with a finsih of butter, roasted malt, and alittle bitterness.
3.1I think this beer is a bit underrated. Drink it cold and it is just not a good porter. BUT - take it out of the fridge for 45 minutes and it is a class example of what the right temperature can do to the taste and even aroma. Some nice maple syrup aromas and a nice roasted malt (chocolate) flavor. The body is a bit thin but improves dramatically with some warming.
2.9Picked up at Publix. Pours a dull brown with copper hues and weak tan head. The aroma is mainly dark fruits with black grape puree and blueberries mixing with a hint of malts and a dash of roastiness. The taste is much the same with dark berries and ripe dark grapes and thin body. It gets a touch malty into the finish.
2.9Pours dark brown with a tan head. Sweet molasses and brown sugar aroma. Feels thin and buttery with some roast.
2.3Not much of an aroma. Looked like a soft drink, with no head and a reddish-brown color. Had a decent taste of roasted malts, and some brown sugar, but overall it just felt watered-down.
2.9Pours a dark brown with tan head. Aroma is roasted nuts with hops and chocolate. Similar taste, although something else present I can’t put my tongue on, and I don’t particularly like it. Not enough hops to help this lacking beer
2.612 ounce bottle given to me by goldtwins because I’m the only person in NY that has less than 2000 ratings. Dark brown with lasting flat head and lace. Very mild roasted aroma. Mild chocolate fruit & nut flavor with a little finishing dry roasted bitterness. Very light body, but somewhat better than expected. Drinkable.
3.1Sampled at the Impromptu Butter’s 6th cellar clearance. Clear chestnut brown, small ring of tan head. Nose of nutty, roasty, and sweet molassis. Maple syrup flavors, milk chocolate. Hollow wateryness in the body. Pretty decent actually.
2.4Pours a beige head with a brown body. Smells of roast, toast, and molasses. Tastes the same. Little thin with regard to the body and finish.
2.1Bottle. Clear dark brown with fizzy scant head. Sweet caramel and toffee aromas are honeyed with a distinct lack of dark roasted malt goodness or fruity complexity. Mainly smells like custard, sugary. Thin palate. Sweet throughout and sorely lacking a malt backbone or any hint of hops. Flavors are carried by toffee, making it ok to drink.
2.3Thanks to Skyview. Watery brown pour with small head. Aroma of buttery brown sugar and a woodiness. Flavor is kind of stale with a poor after taste of dirt. I’m not sure that this truly is a porter but maybe and amber ale. Still nothing I would drink again.
2.912 oz bottle. Poured dark brown with a fizzy tan head. Smelled of toffee, butter, cocoa, and hazelnut. Tasted like sour fermented dark fruits. Small amounts of toffee in the taste, mostly a funky fruit and honey. A little too sweet. Might be one of my least favorate porters.
2.912 oz bottle from a sampler at Publix. Poured a dark brown color with a thin tan head. The aroma was vegetal and meaty, with hints of nuts and caramel. The flavor had a hint of chocolate, but otherwise was just a jumbled mess.
2.9Bottle: Thanks goldtwins. Deep brown pour with some clarity and a lacing light tan head. Buttery sweet aroma with some raisin. Light body, over attenuated. Just some roasted barley with light black malt bitterness. Vague and bland.
2.8Bottle shared by Larry, woohoo. Vegetal hop aroma, light bacon. Moderately hoppy flavor, some chocolate. Decent enough I guess.
2.512 oz from Publix in Brooksville, FL. Pours a deep brown with a foamy off-white head. Nose is chocolate malt , nut, and some hops. Flavor is malty with some bitter coffee, hops, smoke, and some chocolate, but lingering smoke and bitter stay around.
2.7Poured a clear deep amber with a beige head. Aroma of cola and mild chocolate. Some tart notes. The flavor was mildly tart and dry. Chalky roasted malt flavor. Light body with a mild bitter finish. Funny thing is that this is probably like it would have been back in the day like this version is suposed to be. Doesn’t mean I have to like it though.
