4.4Big bubbly cloudy double IPA, incredibel hop aroma and flavor, slight sweet from use of malts, although the body was perfect for such a big brew. Nice bitter crisp finish
4.1Bottle shared with HogTownHarry -- courtesy of DarkElf. Pours a murky, bubbly, orange-yellow with a spare diminishing white head and some floaties of various sizes -- looks almost like grapefruit juice. Very nice, interesting aroma: it’s quite hoppy but also very sweet, like grapefruit and candy. Flavour’s even better. It’s similar to the aroma: citrus hops and a candy sweetness but the hops dominate more (which is to my preference) and there’s a nice big bitter finish -- very well balanced. Alcohol’s very well hidden. Has a good body and goes down pretty smooth. I must admit I was expecting better but it’s still damn fine IIPA.
4.8oh. my. god. thank you mitch. Appearance is completely opaque amber with blonde accents and blonde head (1/4 inch creamy almost nitro like head), and very long lasting head as well. aroma is carmel malt, some pine, orange, corriander, wheat malt, grapefruit, and malt like you would put in milkshakes. some sweet light fruit hints of lemon, apple, green apple (to be specific), and spruce topped off with carmel malt. has some lemon zest and pear flavors. there is nothing abuot this that is boring. a new flavor with each sip, usually fruity, with extremely unbelievable wet west coast hops, that arent overpowering but enlightening. possibly needs a bit of age, but only a smidge. mouthfeel is smooth and creamy with light carbonation. The alcohol isnt present in the flavor, but it kind of smacks you in the face after half a bottle (and this is a 12 oz). amazing malt backbone. This and Yulesmith have been the only two IIPAs that seem to be able to amaze me.
4.0Bottle (12oz). Shared with blankboy, his bottle via trade with DarkElf. Been looking forward to this for a long time. Poured very murky yellowy-orange, small bubbly head, plenty of hop sludge and chunksin the bottom. Aroma of grapefruit, citrus, tons of malt, hints of lactose - nice. Taste starts very sweet, candy and fruit, then waves of resiny hops come over the top - balanced mostly bitter finish, very grapefruit pithy. Decent body, mouthfeel lightly carbonated and acidic/astringent - long finish. Very nice - I’ve had better, and I suspect this one shines brighter on tap or when it’s fresher - very nice
4.1Thanks and cheers to DarkElf! Great guy by the way. Pour was hazy golden with a smalis whiyte head. Nose was all grapefruit, man, sweet. This was a sticky hoppy tart and tangy brew. Good balance, and the mouth feel was like syrup.
4.3On Tap @ PP Carlsbad: I’m going off memory, because it was about a year ago that I last had this beer. But, im here to tell you it was a wonderful beer, while it lasted. That’s about all I can say about it. Just a wonderful IIPA.
3.8(Bottle 35,5 cl) Slightly hazy amber with a creamy, white head leaving some laces. Incredibly fresh, citrusy, hoppy nose. Medium-bodied, some caramel and very citrusy, grapefruity acents. Not overly bitter - pleasant. 220406
4.3I’ve only had one pint glass of this in this beer’s short life span and sure wouldn’t mind some more. Alas, that’s not going to happen. Pretty much a perfect double in all aspects. Like I said, I only had it once, can’t be bothered to take notes while I’m drinking, but would drink as much of this as possible.
4.0Bottle. Caramel malty, citrus, pinetree, hop aroma and taste. Medium to full body with a dry hop finish.
3.9Bottle.
Cloudy amber coloured with an off white head.
Aroma of malts, caramel, hops and pine needles.
Flavour of malts, caramel, hops and pine needles.
3.712 oz. bottle from DarkElf – huge thanks for this rare treat Stephen! Pours a hazy orange with a modest and small head. Aroma… yep, juicy & fruity & enticing but maybe a little harsh. I’m not sure how old is this bottle but I can imagine this is incredible when fresh. Flavor is all hops and bitterness backed up biscuity malts and with a dry alcohol. There is a slight metallic undertone in the flavor which doesn’t make me too excited. Should try to get a fresh sample of this legend someday.
4.3On tap on business Big excellent hop decent head for such a thich brew. Anise and plum in flavor and a sweet caramel in aftertaste. I mentioned in my Fred rating(hair of dog) there should be a duel between Frank and Fred
4.112 OZ bottle from John B. from San Diego who is not in rate beer but should be He really knows his beer. Poured cloudy golden color with almost no head. The flavor became more intense as it warmed up. Grapefruit and citrus dominate the taste with hints of plum, grape and carmel. Wish I had bought more when in S.D. This is in the upper ranks of IPA’s,
3.9The frank is nice, but ’tis not my favorite IPA. Big hop notes supported by an admirable malt backbone. Stands with the best, but the hard so.cal water ultimately doesn’t wash as well as that soft no.cal stuff.
4.4Bottle from DarkElf. Pours a hazed up medium amber color with no head formation to speak of even with a vigorous pour. Aroma is a fantastic blend of malt and hop. Generous doses of pine resin, citrus rind and a lightly raisiny malt aroma. Very well blended nose and enticing. Full bodied, nearly chewy with a lower carbonation level. Piney hop flavor blends with a sweet caramel malt backbone to harmonize well. Moderate sweetness is cut by a citric bitterness. A fantastic double IPA.
4.0Bottle. Light hazy deep gold with a nice sticky head and good lace. Aroma is piney, harsh, citrus, herbal and lightly metallic. Flavor mildly metallic, harsh citrus and piney hops, grassy finishes with a sweet sticky malt. Finishes a bit metallic, and has a wierd high carbed mouthfeel. Pretty good from what I remember on tap, but the bottled version seemd not up to par, but also could have been old.
4.212oz. bottle thanks to Mullman. Hazy orange color with a small off white head. Beautiful citrus hop aroma with a bit of caramel and pine. Flavor is a constant battle , going from citrus hops to sweet malts and then to a bit of pine before grapefruit comes back into play. Really nice beer from a company I’ve yet to have a bad beer from.
4.5From bottle. Poured a cloudy, dull orange with no head and minimal lace. Nose is a delectable sent that reminds me of a strawberry fruit roll-up. Flavor is of an orange, pineapple citrus that mellows into a smooth and sweet bitter finish. Alcohol noticeable, but adds nicely to the overall taste. Mouth-feel is spot on. A wonderful brew.
4.3Thanks Pailhead, Poured Hazy Orange with a off white cream colored head that dissappeared quickly. Aromas were Hop citrus, oil , floral and piney with hints of graoefruit. Nice balanced citrus hop flavor. Not over the top with bitterness or sweetness. Flavor was very impressive for a double ipa Defenitly my top three in catergory
4.9What a quality IPA! Clear dark orange pour fresh from my Pizza Port growler. This growler was filled up two days ago. Finally, this pour is topped off by a ½ beige head that fades to a scant slick as I progress thru this one.
Fresh cut grass & piney, lods of hops oil scents meet an equally robust flavor of the same. There is an aftertaste balance back towards hints of malty candy, but the hops in this IPA are all about it. The floral bouquet and citrus grapefruit peel is more located on the tongue than in the nose.
The acidic sizzle is down to a dull roar here. This is a total sipper. I could drink these all night.
Last swigs: What an all around quality pleasure of a local IPA.
3.9Hazy fiery orange body, medium-thick light cream head. Intense resiny, sticky, citrus rindy aroma, with bitter pine and heavy sugars, caramel, and alcohol. Moving into barleywine territory. Intense, in-your-face resiny, citrusy (grapefruit) hops slam the palate on the first sip, and a strong, full malt sweetness attempts to cut the resins but instead only coats their bitter sharpness. I’m drinking this after it rested in the fridge for about 30 minutes and would actually recommend a longer chilling period. Very good in many regards, but not the most drinkable I2PA. Thanks bu11zeye for the bottle!
3.5Indy gathering 2005. This bottled brew poured a medium sized head of foamy of unnoted size long lasting white colored bubbles that left behind a fair lacing. The body contained unnoted carbonation, was hazy and orange brown in color. Its aroma contained notes of strong thick hops. Its mouth feel is initially tingly with a lingering slightly tingly aftertaste. Its flavor contained mostly hoppy notes. It was also thick and good.
4.3Bottle for rating #1500: Dark straw, very cloudy and dirty, moderate white head, frothy, fairly nice lacing.   Rich sweet hop nose, graham cracker, slightly floral, a touch piney.   Smooth hop flavor on the tongue, not overly bitter, decent malt base, fairly sweet, very full bodied.   Quick hop bite on the exit, moreso bitter tea leaves, emergence of citrus notes.   Lingering sweetened hop tea on the finish.   Very smooth, palatable, and well balanced.   One of the best Imperial IPAs out there.   Make sure to let this one warm up a bit.   Thanks DarkElf for the numerous bottles you sent my way!
4.1Light hazy straw in color, light but sharp hop nose. Rich and creamy then the hops come around and linger for a long while with the sweetness. Good long lingering finish and nicely balanced.
2.1clouded yellow pour with a thin whitish head. lemon aroma. watery hop taste with some pine flavor and light hints of molasses. finish is chalky and weak. this is not appealing to me.
4.2Bottle. Thanks to someone at the Indy Circle City Samplers rate party. Pours a cloudy honey color with a thin lasting head that produces amazing lacing. Hoppy nose with pine, and floral notes. Well balanced flavor with acidic citrus notes, huge hops, and a somewhat souring finish. Very drinkable beer. It is quite amazing.
4.1Sampled at Oakes’ ’05 Xmas PartyCloudy, no head or lacing. Nose of fresh orange citrus, piney hops, tart yeasty notes. Very nice. The flavor is smooth, similar and with bright sweet hoppy malts and nice creamy funky yeasty notes in the tail. The finish is balanced and quite quaffable.
4.3#800 - 12 oz bottle via trade with DarkElf - Thanks Stephen! - Pours lovely bright amber color with a nice rocky offwhite head that stays well and laces in layers on the sides of the tulip. Aroma is big hops pine, grapefruit, and some floral notes. Flavor is a beautiful blend of those same citrus and pine hops and nice sweet caramel malts. Resulting in some tangerine flavor as well as a nice bitter pine finish. Palate is smooth and drinkable and pleasant in the mouth. Right up there with the best IIPAs. This is a great beer and worthy of it’s top 50 rating.
4.2Very strong, very hoppy, big in a good way with a great balance of pine and grapefruit notes I like in an IIPA.
4.7What’s not to like about this beer? Well, according to the bartender at Pizza Port Carlsbad, the Brewer (Frank?) is gone and so is Frank IPA. Damn, I wish I would have bought 3 or 4 cases instead of 1 last month.
Hopefully, we’ll get some information on where this guy goes with his recipe. Stone or Alesmith perhaps?
