3.7 On tap at Beer Baron. It pours a golden orange color with an off white head. The aroma is dank and bready with some orange and a little cookie-like malt. The flavor is spicy/floral hops with some cookie, light caramel, dank, citrus and pine. Pretty enjoyable and great hop character, but a little too heavy on the palate.
3.9 Tasted on 11/12/11 on draft at the Three Floyds Anniversary party. Pours clear bright orange with an average white head that slowly recedes to a thin collar of lace. The nose is hoppy resin with a ton of citrus and some caramel malt. The flavor is tropical fruit, dank resin hops, citrus peel, and caramel. The body is medium and oily with tons of resin bitterness and tropical fruit hops.
4.9 Awesome IPA pine herbal aroma, golden color some what cloudy, wonderful mango pine needle hop flavor! Another great one from this brewery.
3.8 "a bigger body than their regular ipa and black ipa...otherwise both of those beers are better. maybe a different hop profile, or maybe the hops in this beer had to battle the malt too much. quite good, but not quite great!"
4.3 After reading some of these comments I found a surprising amount of disparities. Poor Man’s has been a great double IPA for years. However; the English will find it hoppy and the east side of the US will not like the malt character. This is a legitimate west coast 2x IPA, honey color, high gravity, light body and grape-fruity! It’s as bitter as someone that you left at prom and just as amazing. Get a few
3.7 Keg at Pizza Port Carlsbad, 21/04/14. Clear golden with a moderate off white swirl which emulates a map of Africa. Nose is bitter grapefruit, citric pithdom, straw, lemon rind, hops, pine. Taste comprises sharp grapefruit, mineral bite, pine resin, orange pith, straw, mandarin. Medium bodied, fine carbonation, semi aggressive hop bitterness in the close. Decent approachable DIPA, the 10% doesn’t really make its presence known!
4.0 Draught at Pizza Port, Carlsbad. Clear golden beer with a nice lasting offwhite head. Hoppy pine apple aroma, mango, grapes, citrus, lemonpeels, grassy, caramel, passion fruit, oranges, some pine. Hoppy pine flavor, grassy, oranges, citrus, lemonpeels, floral, pine apples, mango, nice bitterness. Citrus and pine apple finish. Very good.
4.2 Tap somewhere, no idea where. Pours a clear light red with khaki head. Aroma is citrus, grapefruit and orange. Tons pf citrus, really awesome. Minimal malts. Had next to PtE, thought it was awesome still.
3.8 Awesome double ipa on tap at the carlsbad pizza port, consumed with GT2, great beer
4.1 Tap. Pours clear pale amber, small creamy beige head, nice lacing. Aroma is light citrus, grapefruit, hay, orange, pine. Flavor is much the same, citrus explosion, light sweet, light bitter, stronger on the finish. Medium body, creamy mouthfeel. Quite nice.
4.0 On tap at FFF. Golden slightly hazy pour. Citriusy, hoppy, bitter. Great all around double ipa.
3.7 Pizza Port Tap Takeover, CBC Clerkenwell. Pours light orange with a creamy head. Fresh hopsack aroma mainly grapefruit and pine. Huge fresh grassy, spicy flavors witha balancing maltiness. Big dry hoppy finish. Great stuff.
4.1 On tap at CBC Clerkenwell during the Pizza Port Tap Takeover - London. Pours clear gold with a fine, white cream cap. Lots of sweet-smelling citrus in the aroma, sweet bread, orange, mango and light pine. Big sweet flavor with moderate alcohol punch, plus lightly dry grapefruit, orange, some pine. Medium to full in body with fine to average carbonation. Fairly resinous to finish with pale malt sugars, orange, tangerine, melon and grapefruit. Lovely stuff. Ballsy but drinkable.
4.4 Keg, half pint. Clear orange with small white head, decent lacing. Big big caramel smell, can smell it from several feet away. Taste is huge caramel and mango. Resin and pine finish - astringency present. Alcohol well hidden. Excellent stuff. My first truly world class American beer.
3.4 On tap at Craft Beer Co. orange gold clear thin white. Bit syrupy on aroma. Bit too alcohol too syrupy. Dry and bitter on end. Too strong for me. All the others have hidden heat in the mouth.
3.8 Was in the mood for an IPA and uhh... yeah. This delivered. Classic West coast chewing-on-a-grapefruit-rind-in-a-pine-forest quaff. If you like that kind of thing, you’ll love it. If not, don’t bother. For me it was about perfect, hence the high marks.
1.9 At Avery Strong Ale Fest 2013--golden hued with a slight chill haze. Aroma of sickly lupuliny greasy resinous hops. Way too west coast for me. Just pure hop oil on the nose. Flavor is kinda the same. Tastes like ganja and floral resin and leafy lupulin. I love IPAs but this is kinda gross.
3.8 Draft @ 13th Bistro Double IPA Festival, Hayward, CA. Pours a golden color with a white head. Has a floral citrus hoppy aroma with piney hints. Fruity malty hoppy bitter piney weak peachy flavor. has a fruity malty hoppy bitter citrus finish.
4.1 Tap @ Boulder Strong Ale Fest 2013. Pours a golden orange appearance with a cream colored head. Fairly spicy, a bit dank, citrusy hoppy aroma with just a bit of garlic. The garlic and onion come through a little more on the finish after being blasted by tropical fruits and ganja and spicy hops. Great stuff.
3.7 Pours yellow with white head and no lacing. Aroma is light citrus and pine hops. Taste is the same with a nice malty backbone.
3.7 On tap 3 oz. sample at Pizza Port (Carlsbad) Clear, bright gold with off-white head and very good lacing. Aroma of pineapple, citrus, piney, honey and bready malt. Taste of bitter orange, pine, grass, floral hops and bready malts. Medium body and medium/high carbonation.
3.8 Draft at PP - OB. Poured clear dark amber color with an average frothy white head that was mostly lasting with good lacing. Moderate to heavy earthy citrus hop aroma. Medium to full body with a slick texture and soft carbonation. Medium to heavy smooth bittersweet flavor with a medium bittersweet finish of moderate duration. This is a solid beer.
3.9 On tap in Carlsbad Appearance: Clear golden with a medium sized white head and good lacing Aroma: Floral and citrus Taste: Citrus and tropical fruit Nice, clean and crisp. Wow, this is 10%. Never would have guessed that high.
3.9 28/12/2012 Brasserie 4:20 (tap). Bevuta al Pizza Port Tap Takeover. Ambrata scarica, limpida, schiuma bianca leggera e persistente. Al naso fortissima nota di luppolo, agrumata, fruttata, resinosa e pinosa, leggermente agliacea. In bocca è una bomba di amaro, con una struttura di malto presente ma non eccessiva a bilanciare il tutto, molto ben fatta. Corpo medio, carbonazione corretta. Double IPA estremamente luppolata, molto buona.
4.1 Hazy golden rusty yellow on tap at Pizza Port. Nose is fresh tropical fruit and fresh lemon. Taste is fresh citrus and wonderfully bitter sweet. Carbonation is mild and texture soft. Finish on citrus bitter sweet notes . Great DIPA . Quaff Score 8 / 10
4.0 On draft at pizza port. Pours a golden dark orange with a white head and aroma of hops and pine. Taste is sweet, of fresh hops, pine, citrus, and grapefruit with a nice smooth, bitter finish. Delicious double IPA
3.7 A: hops and banana, very strange. A: pale yellow. T: medium bitterness, caramel. P: mb. O: 16/20
3.5 Draft at the brewpub. AKA - Poor Vato. Poured a cloudy gold with white head and lacing. Aroma of citrus, pineapple, pine and roasted malt. Good pineapple and citrus flavors with a lot of roasted malt, some caramel. Good but a little too much roasted malt for DIPA for my preference.
3.2 Growler shared by drabmuh. Thanks Matt. The beer is pretty clear, appearing a copper orange hue. The head is thick and creamy, holding steady at a half inch thick. The aroma offers hops, pine, alcohol. Bready malt and biscuits in the flavor, with pine and alcohol. Substantial malt character throughout. Medium full bodied, with appropriate carbonation. Overall, pretty good, though too malt forward for my liking. Alcohol could be masked better as well. Serving type: growler Reviewed on: 12-18-2011
4.1 On tap at Pizza Port Carlsbad. Orange color, thick head, sticky lacing on the glass. Smell is bitter, hops, hops, hops. Flavor is more bitter hops, chewy, oily almost couldn’t detect the alcohol but you could feel a thickness that let you know this was indeed a double IPA. This was pretty damn good and for 9% I killed it with ease. Nice. Serving type: on-tap Reviewed on: 09-17-2012 22:07:02
