One of the most interesting beers you'll ever find. It is made from Pilsner malt, Wheat, Flaked Wheat and Flaked Oats. The Original Gravity is boosted with some Dark Belgian Candi Sugar. The beer is heavily spiced with Ginger, Corriander, Sweet Orange Peel, Chamomile Flowers, Grains of Paradise and White Pepper. It is hopped with Styrian Goldings. It is unfitered with an OG of 1.067 and 6.7%ABV. 3-4 Belgian Yeast are employed in the making of this beer!!!

3.9At RBSG, poured pale hazy orange with finger thick off white head. Sweetish nose and flavor with tropical fruit and some funk and a bit of must.
3.9Tasted from bottle generously offered by cquiroga at RBSG ’08. The man rocks. Two vintages nonetheless. AND what did I just read: WeeHeavySD had a bottle of this and traded it off before trying it. Wow. Super bummer. I guess it’s common for newbie traders to not know the rarity of what they have or what’s being offered. WeeHeavySD was a big help to me in the beginning. I was constantly asking him questions about rarity.
Anyway, this is supposed to an early version of Red Barn. I love Red Barn, so I was especially eager to try this. Fruity bubblegum aroma, I’m starting to think is coming from age, or possibly the spices. Orange amber color. Leans dry. Highly drinkable. No cardboard oxidation from age. Excellent aroma. Very good.
Rerate from Bottle at Sea-of-Floydster tasting. Same rating
4.303 vintage re-rate.
Glad to finally rate this after trading away my only bottle in my first trade. Pours orange with a bright white ring. Nose is fresh and light. Taste is sweet and dry.
3.9750ml bottle. Damn. We were a little worried about this one. Took the cap off and a small pool of liquid was on top of a very moist cork. Bit of the cork broke off, but thankfully, the beer was still very alive and vibrant. Plenty of foam even after a very gentle pour. Spicy and slightly funky aroma. Coriander and ginger sit gently atop a definitive malty and yeasty base aroma. A slight hint of oxidization takes nothing away from the nose. A very mild note of cured and slightly salted salami. Rotting carmelized orange peel. Seems a but muddied and past it’s prime... just a bit. Pours a thicker caramel orange with a very vibrant white head leaving moderate sticky lacing. Huge amalgam of spice on the tongue. Moderately funky yeast overrides a fairly thick and sweet malted barley base. Some lighter honey, dry grass and tree bark elements as well. Spicy, fruity, funky... delicious. Excellent mouth feel with lively as hell carbonation. Finishes nearly bone dry with plenty of spice and a touch of funk. Thanks for this rare treat Sebastian!
3.9This was a very odd opening, a small puddle of beer on top of the cork, fizzing noises pulling the cork out, and a HUGE head on the pour. Still, this has a very nice aroma, fruity and spicy, very aromatic. This has a lot of character to it, very complex. Shows a bit of age in the finish. I get the ginger but a lot of the flavours have mixed and none of them stand on their own very well.
4.0Healthy foam everywhere. Cork fell apart. Hazy rust orange. Sweet and dusky aroma of old perfume and sun-stricken citrus fruits. Caramel and cinnamon glazed pears. Lavender, chamomile, wildflower honey, brown sugar, and turbinado sugar; sweetness can seem extraneous in character at times, with a lot of random spiciness and band-aid driven phenolic bite. Some salt of sweat.
Flavor of dry, powdery ginger sweetness on burnt cookies. Heavy musk. Spicing seems heavy and murky. Congealed, rather than punchy. White pepper and white tea herbal bitterness. Pilsener malts provide vitalizing, lively sweetness in the middle, and sustains with a floral honey touch. Leafy, pungent, phenolic follow up that’s hard to word. An old spiciness still in a pretty muddy collage. Apple must toward the finish.
Medium to full palate with firm, tightened carbonation. Firey perfume spice and cantaloupe in a long, warm finish. Still very intriguing, even if it’s grown a bit confused over time. Thanks for the opportunity, Ty!
3.8750ml bottle. thanks chris....semi-opaque orange caramel brown with a soapy off-white head....some musty earthiness with a tremendous degree of spice made up the nose. my notes say cloves, ginger, and nutmeg which doesn’t seem all that accurate now that i’ve read the description....flavor was sweet, very spiced-up, and malty with a nice dry finish. excellent carbonation and mouthfeel made it all the better.
3.8Shared by Pantanap at Kanarama. Poured a cloudy orange color. Aroma was musty spice. Taste was spice up front, and all the way through, earthy and herbaly hops, biscuit malt, ending with a nice spicy dry finish. Wow, really glad to have tried this one.
3.85-24-08 bottle shared by the amazing Miketd!!
Cloudy thick orange with a nice big ivory white head. Smell is malt, slightly tart, fruit and spiced rum cake. Flavor is honey and orange and malt. Palate is nice and fits well here. Overall, glad I got to try this one - thanks Mike!
3.2Bottle shared by miketd, once again. Thanks dude.
Pours orange with a big lasting whitish head. Smell is lightly sweet, bright orange, and spices. Taste is spiced, with oranges again. Fairly dry, despite hints of sweetness. I must be a douche, because I don’t seem to have liked this nearly as much as anybody else. What’s new...
4.6Bottle shared by miketd at lb4lb’s tasting. Thanks for bringing this Mike, especially since you only did because I made a comment about the beer, you rule. Spicy, light fruit (pear, apple, orange) aroma with hints of pepper, chamomile, and yeast. Smooth, spicy (ginger, chamomile, pepper) malt entry with some nice fruitiness (orange, apple, pear, apricot) leading into a lightly yeasty, drying finish. Crisp and dry, a great beer overall. Thanks again Mike.
3.9Bottle, at various locations during the Zythos weekend, March 2006. Hazy orange, moderate white head. Earthy spicy aromas with a strangely perfumed woody note, quite weird and piney in the mouth with a suggestion of flowery lavatory cleaner. Not the worst lavatory cleaner I’ve tasted, but I would guess the most expensive.
3.6750 ml bottle coutesy of Hopheadinaz @ Mesa Gathering. Spice hit htte nose along with some sour tart. Flavor wasn’t much different Peppery spice citrus tart along with sour tart. Cloudy gold body with good white head. Good brew.
3.9from mesa gathering (thanks hopheadinAZ)appears to be about 2+years old. pours a nice light pumpkin pie color with a monster white head that quickly calms down. lots of five spice going on in the aroma...coriander, ginger, cinnamon, black pepper, orange, yeast and caramel. flavor is a complex mix of the aroma with a nice dry herby finish. medium body and carbonation with a creamy mouth feel.

3.8thanks to cmubeerman for this. Big cinnamon and spice aroma. also some rich sweet malts. flavor is very rich. full bodied. spices and cinnamon. I actually found this enjoyable.
4.1Pours a slightly hazy golden orange with a huge diminishing frothy cream colored head. Aroma is very forward; spicky, tart, and funky horseblanket. Flavor is very nice, sour, with citrus fruits, black peppercorn, and some slight astringency mid-palate. The body could have been a little lighter, but this brew is awesome.
5.0Aroma: cloves, cinnamon, honey, mustiness, alcohol, passion fruit juice, and bananas
Appearance: murky yellow-brown, small white head, lacing
Flavor: mustiness, oak, honey, cinnamon, chamomile, orange peel, some alcohol, melon, coriander, and fruit syrup
Palate: smooth, creamy, sugary fruity finish
Overall: a truly excellent beer!
4.3Cloudy glowing peach and orange color, even some red hues as well. Great appearance, very inviting. At first the nose is a spicy creamed orange and melon scent, bit of an orange soda smell, with pineapple and fruit cocktail and soft creame and yeast notes. Prickly but soft and tingling on the tongue, full. Fluffy yeast, oranges, pineapple and banana flavors, finishing lightly bitter and just lightly sour. The black pepper shows up light, but used well. The ginger is evident, again mild. The orange peel is certainly there, giving it a nice sweet and ripe fruit character. The chamomile and oats are not so evident. Overall, this is a fantastic experimental beer, not in line with traditional saison but something which stands on it’s own as an amazing farmhouse ale.
3.7Bottle courtesy of Dark Elf. Pours copper with a sustained white head. Smells of grass, hay, chamomile, coriander, biscuity malt and dough. Tastes of lemons, pepper, pilsner malt, some underlying sourness. Mouthfeel is tarte with a tangy twang at the finish. Not very true to the style but tasty.
3.9Bottle shared by OhioDad at C-Bus 6, thanks! Hazy orange pourwith a white head.Aroma of lemon, light malt and light funk seem to come out as well as some yeast. Lemon/lemon zest, some honey, light pale malt and some funk come out in the flavor. Lively carbonation over a light body with a clean finish. Good stuff.
4.0Bottle. Lemon-gold color 1/4" foam - light lace on rim. Mustard, black pepper, spicy notes in aroma. three part body. complex and not what I expected from scent. very nice.
4.1Bottle shared by ohiodad at columbus tasting 6, also rating #400 for me. Aroma was of citrus, funkiness, sweetness, yeastiness. Flavor was great on this. A light sourness also appeared in this one. Very good saison. Also left a little bitterness and alcohol on the back of the tongue.
3.8Shared by Scott at the Columbus tasting #6. Caramel malts really came through in the aroma.Pours a very murky orange with a light off white head.Spices and light malt make up the flavor.Medium mouthfel with a spiced finish. One of the better saison’s I’ve had.
4.0750ml bottle via trade with tever - Thanks Tom! - Pours blonde with a fair white head. Aromas of lemon, and floral notes over yeast and a little spice. Flavor is lemon, yeast, dough, some spice, and a good hoppy finish. Soft carbonation leads to a pleasant mouthfeel. A very good Saison here..
3.8Bottle shared by OhioDad at C-Bus 6: Cloudy golden pour with a white head. Aroma, light yeasty notes, some funk, and a bit of lemon. Flavor, lemon grass, bready yeasty notes, some spicing, very light and refreshing. And it went quite nicely with the calzones that moejuck brought with him.
4.0Shared by OhioDad, aka "The Beerfather". Light floral and herbal aroma is delicate and pleasant. Hazy dark yellow body. The palate is soft and medium bodied--smooth. Very light sour taste hides behind a solid mix of spices. Complex flavor and not overdone. I’m not a big fan of Saisons by any stretch--but I really enjoyed this one..
3.9750mL bottle, courtesy of tever. Thanks, Tom! Pours a cloudy, dark pink-grapefruit color; off-white head with web-like lacing. Chewy, yeasty and orange peel in the aroma; coriander and belgian spice. Full, chewy mouthfeel: ginger, white pepper, light lemon and hints of vanilla; very drinkable and satisfying. Lengthy, yeasty and vanilla and chewy grapefruit finish.
4.0Super hazed dark gold, creamy off white head. Nose held complex notes of gingery herbal tones, citrus, florals, pepper, and a faint woodniess. Spicy peppered flower flavors are well balanced with more ginger, earthy herbs, and sweet orange zest. Ongoing complexities and fun to drink. Medium to full bodied, soft smooth carbonation, sweet herbal citirc finish. Un-retire this ASAP and make more. This would be a great summer brew without a doubt. Thanks for sharing kmweaver...
