Põhjala / To Øl Cellar Series - Taanilinn Cognac BA

Taanilinn is the Estonian for Danish Town - this is where the capital Tallinn got its name from and this is where Denmark got their national flag Dannebrog in 1219, when it fell from the sky.

Põhjala and To Øl created this beer together to honour the old Danish heritage of Tallinn. Deep complex oatmeal stout aged for months on Cognac barrels, spiced with all the best from the liquors of Estonia.

Taste- very sweet and boozy, chocolate milkshake, whisky fudge, molasses, vanilla traces, ashy roast malt, burnt treacle, burnt toast, sweet stewed dark fruit, rich coffee, sweet liqueur chocolate. 4.2 Bottle at Peders. Black coloured with a small beige head. Roasted aroma of chocolate and dried fruits. Sweet and roasted flavour of chocolate and dried fruits. Sweet and roasted finish.
4.5 0.33 l bottle from 'Beergium', best before November 2020, cellared for a year. Pitch black with a medium large, frothy, stable, light brown head. Sweetish-malty, gently roasty aroma of praline, nougat, cognac, vanilla and a touch of dried fruits. Fairly sweet, malty, gently roasty taste of praline, nougat, cognac, vanilla and some dried fruits, followed by a medium long, gently roasty-bitter, slightly earthy, moderately herbal-spicy and just a bit boozy finish. Full body, smooth, creamy and almost oily mouthfeel, very soft carbonation. Fairly complex and intense but pleasant at the same time. That's barrel-aging in perfection, the cognac flavours are gorgeous, the base beer is still thick and saturating. Delicious!
3.9 33cl-fles van bij Bierhalle Deconinck te Vichte. U: Zwarte met een bruine schuimkraag. G: Cognac, geroosterd, koffie, kandijsuiker en alcoholprikken. S: Zoet. Veel gestoofde appels, donker fruit, chocolade, toffee en cognac. Alcoholwarmte. M: Volmondig, licht sticky en lichte carbonatie.

3.9 330 ml bottle, from Vinmonopolet. ABV is 14%. Pitch black colour, moderate tan head. Aroma of malts, molasses, caramel, oak, cognac and vanilla, hints of chocolate and fusel alcohols. Warming mouthfeel. Rich and sweet flavour, with the same elements as the aroma, also notes of strong coffee and distinct bittering hops.
3.8 0,33l bottle. Pours jet-black with light brown head. Massive aroma of roast, cocoa, vanilla, cigar, coffee, slight whiff of dark fruit. Taste is sweet, cocoa, coffee, liqueur-y, vanilla. Full bodied, soft carbonation. Just bit too sweet to be one of the greats.
4.7 0.33l bottle. Jet black body with a lasting brown head. Aroma and taste of chocolate, cognac, coffee, caramel, raisins, cocoa and floral hops. The booze is present, but restrained comparing to its ABV content. Fantastic!
4.0 330ml bottle at Põhjala BA tasting, batch 133. Aroma is slightly boozy, rum, vanilla, chocolatey. Taste is chocolatey, slightly boozy, prunes, vanilla, cognac. Sweet chocolatey finish with hints of cognac. Full body, bit below average carbonation. Super smooth and complex, well covered alcohol. Ageing have had good influence on it, less sweeter now.
4.1 12 ounce bottle poured into a brandy snifter. The beer is a thick black with a khaki head of foam. Boozy and sweet. Some malty notes. Bigger body and medium carbonation.
4.0 Both bottle and tap. From the beernotes: thick, boozy, creamy, complex aroma. Strong without ash and ethers.
4.0 330 ml bottle at home, courtesy of Sander, many thanks! Pours a deep mahogany with a tan colored head. Aroma of sweetish roasted malt - honey, caramel, molasses, nuts, prunes, raisins, some cognac, vanilla, nutmeg and cinnamon. Full body with a very soft carbonation, a medium to medium-heavy sweetness and a light to medium bitterness. The flavor is similar to the smell but a tad more roasty and with more cognac - honey, brown sugar, cocoa, licorice, cognac, sweet spices, cinnamon, gingerbread, nutmeg. Finishes with a lasting and nearly astringent bitterness, wood and some cognac. Aroma: 8 Appearance: 4 Taste: 8 Palate: 4 Overall: 16
4.1 330 ml bottle from Sander, many thanks! dark chestnut brown with coffee coloured head. chocolate, wood, raw cane sugar, cognac, dark, dried fruits, nutmeg, cloves, nuts. full body, medium sweetness, roasty bitterness, slightly umami. really nicely balanced
4.3 Aroma of cocoa, loads of cognac, some dark fruits, vanilla, some coffee. Taste is full of dark chocolate, lots of vanilla, some coconut, maple syrup and some spiciness in the dry finish. Body is full and silky smooth. Beautiful thing
3.9 Bouteille.
4.3 Bottle, 330 ml from Primož. Shared with JFK10000 and Max. Dark brown, light brownish head. Roasted, chocolate, cognac, spicy licorice, quite warming, sweet, nice roasty bitter finish. Full bodied.
4.6 deep dark brown, almost lack colour, half inch of creamy beige head; aroma of dark chocolate, cognac, coffee, walnut and coffee notes; taste of dark chocolate, syrupy sweetness, cognac, walnut notes, dried cherry and some burnt bitterness; spicy alcoholic aftertaste; amazing imperial stout!
4.7 Pours thick, black, small beige head, spots of lacing. Aroma is roasted malts, chocolate and strong cognac. Tastes malty, roasty and sweet, strong on cognac, but not boozy (sneaky...), Fruity, dark fruits, chocolate. Full bodied, smooth and very enjoyable. Great stout!
4.5 boiled apple, conac, soy sauce, brown sugar, roasted, licorice
4.0 Backlog-rating from Untappd, mai 2018: Riktig fin med toner av choklad och lakrits samt lite subtil cognac.
4.1 Butelka. Aromat bardzo klasyczny, idzie w taki typowy mix paloność-gorzka czekolada i espresso. Potem wychodzi fajna beczka, delikatna waniliowa słodycz i odrobinka mokrego drewna. Oleiste, gęste ciało, kremowe i gładkie. W smaku wyraźnie słodkie, potem delikatna owocowa kwaśność w typie żurawiny, albo śliwek. Finisz już lekko palony, delikatnie goryczkowy z nadal obecną kwaśnością. Beczka delikatnie w tle, jako waniliowa słodycz, wniosła też nieco cierpkości. Rzeczone przyprawny na granicy autosugestii.
3.9 Apparence : Noire, léger col brun, carbonatation, dentelle et rétention faibles. Nez : Malt grillé, alcool, chocolat, vanille, mélasse. Goût : Vanille, chocolat, mélasse, malt grillé, alcool, légère âcreté en finale. Épices et pruneaux en rétro-olfaction. À la fois sucrée et bien amère. Sensation : Chaleureuse, bon corps, bonne tenue.
4.7 Shared both the Laugas and the Taanilinn with my brother at the same time. This one pours completely black with hardly any head. Aroma is very smooth, coffee and dark malts and some restrained cognac. Biiig but smooth body. Flavour is once again very smoothly incredible this is 14%! Rich and rather sweet, although not overtly. Lots of coffee and dark malts, some chocolate and dark fruit. Quite herbal and even a tad hoppy; medium bitterness. Finish is rich and boozy, with cognac and cocoa. Woah. Such a smooth impy. 14% is hardly noticeable. Love this, it's somewhat different from most impys.
3.9 33cl bottle shared at Gyhallmanti’s. Appearance: pitchblack with medium sized beige head. Aroma: dark malts, cacao, brown sugarry sweetness, juniper berries, mint licorice candies, hardwood sawdust. Taste: high sweetness and high bitterness. Notes of dark chocolate, dark roasted malts, roasted coffee, brown sugar, sawdust, wood, some most like wryness that maybe originates from the cognac. Palate: full bodied, sticky texture and soft carbonation. Not much cognac or barrel present. Quite sugary as well. Still pretty good stuff.
3.9 33cl bottle split with SimonBlok. Courtesy of SimonBlok. Pours a pitch black colour with a medium brown colour. Aroma of coffee, cognac, vanilla, roasted malt, juniper berries, almonds, amaretto. Texture is oily and thick, full bodied with soft carbonation
4.2 Bottle at Mikkeller Bar SF. Pours dark brown with an attractive tan head and a lovely treacle and cognac aroma. There is a full-bodied dark molasses flavor with some brown sugar and a subtle yet substantial cognac finish. Very delicious.
