Põhjala Virmalised

Põhjala Virmalised

Translation: Aurora Borealis - A powerful and hoppy IPA that uses a blend of American hops, giving the beer a fresh citrus and grapefruit punch.

Note: there was a major recipe change in August 2020, but since it is not easy to know which is which they are kept under one entry.

3.6 Can, 6.5%. Good aroma of light caramel. Hazy golden colour. Fizzy white head. The flavour is very malty and has a distinct light caramel note. Tastes like DIPA but less bitter.
3.5 I'm a big fan of Põhjala's thick and dark ones, but I think this is the first time I try one of their IPA. And no, Virmalised isn't a past tense of a new verb, it's the Estonian name for Aurora Borealis, which is depicted in the label. Not the freshest can, need to be said, and some oxidation can be found in its aroma, but nothing big. Hop forward, with grapefruit and pine, sweetish notes. Pours amber, moderately hazy, a small but creamy white head with good retention and lots of dots of laces. Medium bitterness from hops but sweetness from malts balances 50/50. Piney, grapefruity, dank and with some canned peach oxidation. It's a pity as it feels like a solid brew. Medium body and carbonation, refreshing and easy to drink. Said about a minor oxidation, it seems like a proper American IPA, with a blend of American hops (which include Citra and Azacca). I definitely want this fresh!
3.6 Tap at Indoor Sörfesztivál. Nem készítettem jegyzeteket, csak pontoztam a sört.
3.4 Hazy gold color with frothy head. Aroma of American hops. Taste kinda like an EIPA rather than a traditional IPA. Smooth, rich, and a little sweet. Nice
3.8 Can from craft beer collective Clear yellow, smooth white head. flowery hops with a decent hoppy bitterness. good malty base. reminds me of stone IPA (and that is a compliment). flavor is flowery hoppy, matching malty base, matching bitterness, totally well rounded and balanced IPA, the bitterness in the end in my sample gets a little bit "old hops" ish, but that could just as well be age as it could be the beer itself. very good, very drinkable well balanced ipa.
3.5 Can 33cl a clear golden beer with medium head. Nose on lemon, pine, resin, caramel. Taste is medium sweet and medium bitter. Aroma on old lemon, quince, orange, almond notes, good body. Finish on old fruits and lemon.
3.2 Goudgeel bier met kleine witte schuimkraag. Honing, gras, hars, karamel, perzik. Medium zoet, licht bitter. Te weinig hopbitterheid voor deze stijl. Best een prima bier, maar vind het geen uitgesproken IPA.
3.3 33 cl. can @ home, served in a teku glass, best before: 2022/01/21, canned at: 2021/04/21. Aroma: medium intensity aromas of fruits, tropical fruits, cherries, caramel malts, caramel, tangerine. Appearance: pale gold color with slighty off-white head made of small bubbles which grow over time to become medum sized ones, medium to high head thickness, high retention, low to medium Brussels' lacing, medium haziness. Taste: medium sweetness, low to medium bitterness, no sourness. Flavors of fruits, caramel malts, caramel, hints of cherries, tangerine, bitter orange. Balance is toward the sweetness, but it is not cloying or unpleasant. Mouthfeel: low to medium body, medium texture, medium carbonation, long sweet finish with low to medium sweetness and the aforementioned flavors. Alcohol is well hidden and only noticeable because of some mouth and throat warming. Astringency is not noticeable. Hop burn is not noticeable. Overall: good appearance, aromas and flavors of fruits, cherries, caramel, caramel malts, tangerine, bitter orange. Too sweet and too much caramel flavors to fit into the style. But it is tasty and drinkable. It tastes more like a red ale than an IPA.
3.7 Can. Clear golden beer with average white head. Aroma of pine, resin, citrus, grapefruit, some tropical fruits and herbs. Taste is light sweet and medium+ bitter, citrus, grapefruit, resin, tropical fruits, peach, light pine. Mild bitter grapefruit finish. Medium- body, average carbonation. Drinkable, classic American IPA. Good.
3.7 330ml can from a Gradi Plato shop in Rome, drinking 20/10/2021 BB 15 04 2022 Pours a very slightly hazy pale golden with thin soft creamy white foam on top and moderate lacing. Good aroma of pale malt and citrus, tropical fruit, grapefruit, mango, grassy piney hops. Taste is moderately sweet and noticeably malty with pale malts and lots of fruity and grassy notes, hints of tropical fruits and citrus, grapefruit, peach, lime, piney and grassy hops, hoppy but not too aggressively bitter finish, just a bit dry. Malty, hoppy and resinous, fruity aftertaste, slightly sweet. Soft, easy and fresh tasting, pleasant, clear taste. Medium body and watery-oily texture, average carbonation. Gets a bit more sharp and bitter towards the end. Not the most bitter IPA but definitely really good, fruity and enjoyable.
3.4 Pours light hazy golden blond whit a tiny white head. Some bitter grapefruit on the nose and palate. 2nd time I try this one and it’s not for me. I miss the fruity exotic touch, also lacks complexity. Bitterness rules in this one.
3.8 Bottle, medium stable fluffy bubbly head, hazy, deepish yellow color, aroma of orange ,lemon, peach and a bit of marmalade in the back, citrus, melon, flowers, some light maltiness behind, light to medium sweetness, mellow green citrus bitterness. Really nice and balanced.
3.9 Ampolla Hopt. Aroma tropical, gust afruitat, molt citrica (pomelo) i punt maltos. Bona
3.8 Bottle. Clear yellow-golden with white head. The aroma has notes of tropical fruits, mango, pine, citrus, grapefruit, herbs. The flavor is mild sweet and bitter with notes of tropical fruits, mango, pine, dank, ripe fruits, peach, citrus, grapefruit, a bit "green", some malt. Medium to full-bodied.
3.5 Flasa z kubbo select. Vona alkoholova chmelova medova. Medova farba mierna pena. Chut lahodna alkohol necitit mierne chmel, med, borovica.
3.7 Il luppolo citra si sente ma non è dominante, ipa con note di luppolo e di malto ben bilanciate.
4.0 Hazy, amber color and a nice white head. Fruity, Tasty and hoppy. Too much Pohjala tonite.
3.4 Beautiful orange colour. Smell of pine and citrus. Taste is sweet for an IPA. Orange juice in taste. Balanced carbonation and medium body. Malty aftertaste
4.0 Golden hazy with a one centimetre thick head. Smell of mango, papaya, passion fruit and bitter orange. Nice bitter taste with notes of exotic and citric fruit. Rather low carbonation.
3.8 Robe orangee, mousse blanc cassé moyenne. Nez orange sanguine, orange confite, notes herbeuses mentholées, résine. Bouche résineuse, agrume, petite fraîcheur herbeuse, caramel. Amertume moyenne, bonne longueur, carbo OK.
3.6 A solid classic ipa. Good cara malt backbone that balances the substantial bitterness, which makes it quite palatable. Here at jalopper des jahres hamburg it probably isn’t super fresh, and so suffers a bit of lively hops aroma because of it.
3.3 Flaska. Disig orangefärgad med ett smutsvitt skum. Dofter av grapefrukt, blomster och tall. Smakinslag av grapefrukt, malt och tall. Medelbeska.
3.3 Tap at 100 piv. Moderate body, quite assertive caramelly nutty maltiness, more than I would like. Med-light carbonation. The heavy handed maltiness also kinda drowns out the hops character. Moderate bitterness, only subtle citrusy resiny undertones. Good but not great.
3.4 Bottle @ Online DTU w Nissen, New A & mr spark. Appearance: pours hazy amber with ok off-white soapy head and lacing. aroma/taste: barley, bread, toast, light caramel, grapefruit, citrus, light herbal and pine notes. palette: strong US hoppy aroma, average carbonation, medium body, medium to notable sweetness, balanced by a medium to notable bitterness, average duration, bitter finish and a watery texture. Overall: enjoyable east coast IPA
3.8 Bottle at home, haven't had this in a while. West coast IPA with medium bitterness. Very intense honey flavour, in general quite sweet. Pine and a but of resin, orange and grapefruit. Tasty and drinkable.
