Port Brewing Shark Attack Double Red Ale

Port Brewing Shark Attack Double Red Ale

This is a classic West Coast-style imperial red ale brewed with medium crystal malts, centennial and cascade hops.
The color is a burnt amber with red highlights and the aroma has a spicy hop presence with moderate caramel malt accents.
The taste is a smooth, malty one with a balanced hoppy finish that includes hints of sweet caramel

4.0 Hazy amber color with beige head. Aroma has toasted malt, light caramel, resiny/piney hops and a hint of fenel. Taste is nutty, bitter and resiny with some dried orange notes. Medium body and carbonation. Complex, tasty and quite easy drinking for its ABV.
3.7 Bottle thanks to and shared with the Mrs at home - pours dark amber with a beige head. Sweet and slight toasted biscuit malty with notes of caramel and toffee, some melted fudge, some marmalade fruity shred, nice hoppy backing, pine needles, warming sweet malty into the close.
4.1 CASCADEiger BrotOnkel mit dem kratzigen RosinenBukett. Stark, malty & wie so oft... lägger ASA COOL!!! 👌😀 . Bomber aus Dortmund. 11 Euro.
3.3 On tap at First Draft Taproom & Kitchen. Reddish amber appearance with a lingering tan head. Mild aroma of pine, resinous hops, caramel malt, toffee and toasted grain. Similar flavor, adding moderate hop bitterness and a mild grainy sweetness. Medium body with a slight dry feel. Slightly disappointing overall.
3.9 Nose is malt and molasses. Crystallized brown sugar flavors. Fully bodied. Another solid offering from Port.
3.7 Poured from a 22 oz bottle into a glass it shows a clear reddish-orange with a thick beige head that leaves moderate lacing. Aroma is strong caramel, ripe fruit and a bit of pine in the background. The smooth malty taste quickly gives way to a pronounced bitter that carries all the way through a long finish with hints of alcohol rising to the surface. Soft carbonation, medium body, and almost creamy on the palate.
3.6 Pours an amber with moderate head. Smells of crisp bread and citrusy hops. Taste is bitter and sweet well balanced.
3.6 GG, Seattle. Thin creamy head, lacing some. Very dark red-orange-brown pour. Complex body and aroma. Bitter grain, dense fruit, amber malts. Cranberry tart alcohol presence, thick creamy body. Cool smooth presence overall, nicely astringent alcohol to complete the body. A bit of an oddity for me.. somewhat a dipa mixed with an amber. Not bad.
4.0 Brown hazy with rich beige creamy head. Slightly sweet malty aroma. Sweet bread taste followed by medium bitterness with some sourness. Bit spicy.
3.7 Shared bomber from the local Windy City rep, poured to snifters showing a hazed, deep amber hue, with a frothy layer of off white head foam, and wavy ribbons & spots of lacing. The nose was malty, with light spice, some citrus & stone fruit, but esters that projected more of a dried fruit scent. Better than medium bodied, prompted by decent liveliness to the carbonation, the taste was similar notes, bittered by lingering citrusy, earthy, and rind-like qualities of the "C" hops. Thanks Paul!
2.8 Aged 3+ years. did not know what to expect and don’t remember last time I had it fresh. so... it pours ruby brown (reddish) with a thick frothy head with good retention. clarity is on the cloudy side. as expected there’s some off flavors of oxidation, band-aid and green apples but its not overwhelming. bready sweet malts and earthy hops still come through. it had medium/full body with decent carbonation. texture is on oily side. strong astringency that hits the palate to almost harsh levels. taste of heavy sweet malts, earthy hops and alcohol with some off soy-saucey thing going on. major components (semi-harsh astringency, bitterness and alcohol warmth) last long after swallowing. - wish I had a fresh for comparison.
3.8 Pours deep burgandy with an off white foamy top. Aroma is caramel and toffee rich malts. Big earthy and grapefruit hops. Taste is a nice big round mouthfeel, loads of hops and bit rich malts. Nice beer.
4.1 Oh my gosh such a strong rye aroma. Pours with a hazy white head and a nice red body, slightly opaque. Very light body. Really spicy flavor from the rye, a bit of pine hops, and a light bitterness. Delicious.
3.9 Dont have much experience with red ales but might need to try more. Overall very pleased by this beer. Deep copper/red color with white head that reducing to a nice ring. Smooth feel and novelty balanced flavors.
4.7 Sweet biscuit malts. Ruby brown minimal head. Hoppy almost rye malty. Long bitter finish. Heavy yet even strong hops, great beer.
4.1 Shark attack at Mi2 at Cardinal 20.06.16. Dark orange. Persistent beige head and lacing. Aroma of dried fruits, ripe fruit, Sevilla marmalade, wood and redcurrants, Similar taste, with warming alcohol. Excellent!
3.6 Shared bottle at Cardinal, Stavanger. Pours hazy reddish copper with off-white head. Aroma of caramel, dark bread, some fruity notes. Tastes sweet and bitter. Highly carbonated, some alcoholic warmth. The beer was bottled 4 yrs, 3 months ago.
3.7 Mousse beige abondante. Robe cuivrée légèrement opaque. Amertume modérée, goût matlée et légèrement caramélisé. Superbement balancé, on ne se rend pas compte du taux d’alcool à la dégustation.
3.8 Big malty taste here that goes underappreciated in modern hop worship world of beer. This is complex in raw barley. I get the sense of organic hipster heirloom barley strains at play. Or at least I sense good barley. Light citrus aroma and some booze. Caramelized malt. Tangy bitter finish. Tap at sovereign savor event.
3.7 Aromas and flavors slightly sweet, caramel, grainy malt, wood, spicy bitterness. Burnt orange color with a reddish tint. Nice head and body.
3.6 Bottle. Pours deep hazy amber with off white head. Fruity, malty aroma. Peach, melon, rye, orange peel, pine, grass. Medium body. Fairly bitter
3.7 Pours cloudy amber. Aroma is malty, hoppy, slight roasted. Taste is roasty, balanced with hop bitterness.
4.0 Bomber bottled in February, so barely three months old; label says 9.0% ABV instead of the 9.5% given here. Thick, heavily cobweb-lacing, beaten egg-white, dense, frothy head, clear pure and warm copper red colour with amberish hue. Fragrant and dank IPA-like (but maltier) bouquet of marmelade and candied orange, pink grapefruit flesh, pine needles, hemp (as in: marihuana), pistachio nuts, chicken spices, caramel, toasted brown bread, cigarette tobacco, pink pepper, strawberry wine, artisanal honey, hazelnut, roast tomato peel, nutmeg, bacon, ginger. Low sweetness in the onset, some subdued dried fig and raisin, hints of umami and sourishness but all quite restrained and flavorful at the same time, as if they reinforce each other; carbonation is medium to sharpish but lightens the body, which, though certainly not thin, feels surprisingly light for a beer this strong. Some caramel malt sweetishness quickly makes room for a deep ’bittersweetness’, very toasted and pleasantly nutty, the bittering effect of which is completely in line with the finish, which is dominated by juicy American hoppiness: lovely retronasal aromas of grapefruit, orange peel freshness, some pine and exotic spice, while at the same time the back of the mouth is dried with a resinous, citrusy, peppery yet still fairly ’gentle’ bitterness, leaving a ’stream’ of juicy bittersweet (and ultimately, after swallowing, even somewhat caramelly sweet) malts to pass through down into the throat, accompanied by lovely hop spiciness. Needless to say, a warming, slightly bourbon-like alcohol effect is noticeable, but stays perfectly in place. Pleasant enough beer, feels a lot lighter than I expected based on its strength, the lightness of which is further enhanced with the both delicate and exuberant New World hop aromas, making it come very close to red IPA - which would have been a style designation as credible and true as ’American strong ale’, which actually does not say a lot. Whatever the beer style: enjoyed this a lot, not the most complex or demanding ale, but showing an incredible ’drinkability’ and simply being to the point in terms of flavor.
3.4 kindly shared by impuritylaw@Roland’s brewday, thanks a lot! Lovely aromas of pine, a whole bunch of tropical fruits and hints of caramel, slight alcohol burn; on a fizzy up to sharp palate, the hops come out quite soapy, though. Soap translates back into tropical fruitiness as soon as the overly strong carbonation has ceded; nice, balanced bitter finish.
4.3 Pours deep red with a mahogany hue and a thick, foamy head of beige bubbles. Aroma is hop forward as you would expect but not overpowering as an IIPA more like a malt driven beer with hops than vice versa. Taste is very well balanced between the maltiness and hops with neither overpowering the other but a quite pronounced bitterness in the finish. One of the easiest drinking beers of this ABV and a real testament to Port Brewing’s ability to make solid beers of any style.
3.7 Bomber. Murky amber-orange pour with a huge frothy head. Caramel/toffee, citrus and pine hops, and a little spice. Another very well made brew from Port.
3.6 On tap 4 oz. taster at the Lost Abbey/Port Brewing tasting room. Nearly clear, orange/brown/red with a pale khaki head and excellent lacing. Aroma of caramel (or maybe toffee), pine and citrus. Taste of toffee, citrus, pine and caramel. Medium/full body and low/medium carbonization with a soft mouthfeel.
4.1 Review based on the BJCP2015 guidelines (style 22B). Bottle 56 cl - Batch unknown. AROMA: hop aroma moderate-high with a citric, resiny, piny character, complemented by a moderate background of sweet malt with toffee, very faint caramel and gentle dried grapes. APPEARANCE: dark ambar color and slightly hazy. large, creamy, dark ivory head with good retention. some lacing/legging formation. TASTE: initial sweet toffee-like malt with moderate intensity, followed by a medium-low hop presence with notes similar to aroma (citric / piny). The malt is complex, showing also toasty and slight caramel notes. slight peppery alcohol also present. medium-high bitterness enduring after a semi-dry fonosh. balanced. PALATE: medium to medium-high body with a slight velvety texture and a present alcohol warmth but smooth. no astringency from hops. high carbonation. OVERALL: a very good american strong ale with a very present hop character and a complex malt to complement the presentation. the sample had a bit extra carbonation.
3.9 Pours reddish copper with a fine tan head. Nose is a strong mix of floral hops and a sweet red malt. Flavor is well balanced between the hops, wheaty malt, and a touch of alcohol. Good stuff.
4.0 The aroma is spicy, caramel, citrus, nutty. The appearance is clear, deep red, white head. The flavor is citrus, nutty, caramel. The finish is sweet, citrus. Medium/thick in body. Nicely done.
