Prairie Funky Gold Amarillo

Prairie Funky Gold Amarillo

Funky Gold Amarillo is the second beer in our dry-hopped sour ale series. We took our sour golden ale, Gold, and gave it a heavy dosing of Amarillo hops. The result is a beer that is a mix of tropical fruit and Prairie funk. Notes of peach, orange, white wine, and citrusy brett can be found in the flavor and aroma.

3.1 Shared 16.9 oz. bottle. Very hazy gold/orange color. Lots of foam immediately upon opening the bottle. Aroma of funk and tropical fruits. Taste is mango, peach, pineapple, herbal, funk, white wine, bread. Some sweetness and sourness.
3.0 Aroma: definite funk with grapefruit notes; Appearance: hazy straw/orange with billowy head that dissipates fairly quickly; Taste: sour and tangy; not as much hops as expected; Palate: medium body with brief, light finish; Overall: okay but not my favorite; would not buy again.
4.2 Bottle. Pours a cloudy light orange body with a large foamy white head. Nose is horse blanket, barnyard funk, lemon juice, tropical fruits and hints of wet grass, lactic acid and pineapple. Taste is tropical fruits, pineapple, lactic acid, barnyard funk and hints of hay, citric tones, white wine and wet grass. Medium body, dry finish, high carbonation. Incredible tasty stuff; the perfect match between a horsey lambic and the tropical fruits of New World hops. Another hit from Prairie.
3.0 Orange color with foam ring. The smell is sourish. The taste is dry, yet sourish fresh with a carbonation that is a little too flat. Dry sourish aftertaste.
4.1 500ml bottle. From box aroma. Pours gold. Smells funky with a huge citrus note. Oaked. Big mossy character. Taste is off dry and lightly tart. Ample carbonation. Lots of dry hop character (low bitterness, big fruit expression) coupled with lactic acid and bacteria. This is good.
3.8 .5L bottle from Quicker Liquor OKC. Chill hazed golden color with lasting white foam. Earthy barnyard dung aromas with dry hay, wet grass, dry spices. Medium bodied with average carbonation. Sour dough, white bread flavors with mild bandaid, tart lemon, dry spices----more wild than sour____tasty.
3.8 Bottle at Max & Jess’s for an impromptu barbecue thing when I was down for Comic Con.. Pours a hazed gold with a thin white head. Musk and citrus on the nose, soft pear and melon. Medium bodied, soft tartness. Long tartness, soft citrus, tangy with some grassy citrus.

3.8 Draft at Beer Temple. Pours cloudy orange golden with a white head. Aroma of barnyard funk, manure, citrus, light green apple and tart light fruits. Flavour is moderate sour. Light medium bodied with soft carbonation.
4.0 Bottle. Pours hazy yellow, with an enormous creamy head. Aroma is hoppy citrusy orange peel, tangerine sweet grapefruit and yuzu, and sweet yeast with floral bretty notes, as well as notes of hay and some light roasted malts. Medium body, with average to fizzy carbonation. Flavour is funky citrusy notes of orange and tangerine, and fruity bretty notes with flowers, spices and wood, as well as notes of hay and white wine grapes. Lingering citrusy finish.
4.4 Cloudy peach pour with a massive, quickly fading white head. Excellent nose of hay, sweet hops, barnyard, and citrus. Great taste, not as complex as the nose but plenty of sour goodness, summer fruit with a fuzzy finish. Very enjoyable!
3.8 Tulip. Tap. Golden straw colour, cloudy with medium white, semi-densed head. Medicore head retention and good lacing. Aroma is fruity and funky with quite noticable zesty, lemon notes, also straw and peachy notes. Taste is medium sour and lighlty bitter, really nice. Medium to full body, creamy texture, lively carbonation, finish is dry and lemon. In overall yet another balanced sour ale from prairie, worth trying.
4.2 Bottle at home. Light golden straw color with slight haze. Small head dissapears within seconds. Aroma is citrus and medium strength brett. Taste is the same with high carbonation. Very dry, some earthy-hoppy bitterness is present. Awesome sour ale...screams for a slow food dinner.
4.0 Shared at a tasting hosted by Steve Hackley on September 25. Thanks Steve! This was poured from a 500 mL bottle. The pour is a foggy straw color with a thin white head and some good lacing as it falls to a collar. The aroma is surprisingly full of a juicy hoppiness. There isn’t any real discernible sour on the nose, which threw me as this was classified as a sour. It’s a little dry, and it does carry some big citrus notes. The flavors are a little better, but still disappointing for a sour. There is a nice citrus and fruity hoppiness but the dryness and just a light tart are all that come through on the back end. The mouth feel is thin and light, crisp, with a nice carbonation and a lingeringly juicy hop finish. There is a little sour crispness that comes in on the far back end, but it’s definitely more funky IPA than it is sour.
4.1 Hazy gold with a big white head. Aroma is slightly tart fruit and mild hops. Flavor is hoppy with a tart undercurrent.
3.9 Backlog rating. Bottle from HB&B, London. It pours a cloudy orange color with medium off-white head that disappears quickly. Aroma is funky bretty fruity with lemon zest, peaches, horse blanket, straw. Taste is medium sweet and lightly sour and acidic, with more stone fruit, citrus and tangerine. Medium bodied with good carbonation. Overall, tasty
3.5 Keg at PSBH, Manchester. A murky orange shade leaning towards brown. Short white head. There’s a lot going on here. Tangy sourness, bitterness, herbal and grassy hops, lots of stewed fruits and some dryish white grape flavour. I don’t think it comes together perfectly, but I appreciate it.
4.2 Bottle from Beergium. Hazy golden with white head. Aroma has funk, citrus, orange, sour and tart notes and light leather. Taste is funky with lemon, grapefruit and slight brett. Fairly high sourness, earthy notes and some zest. Lovely.
4.0 Bottle. Gusher, but mostly foam coming off so I can still fill my glass :) Hazy golden body and and a large fluffy top. Indeed a funky aroma with hints of wild / saison yeast, citrus and white wine. Taste is fairly balanced with a light sourness balanced out by a moderate to light bitterness. Loads of fruits here as well. A lovely and refreshing sour ale. Medium-light body and high levels of co2.
3.8 Bottle:   Bright straw in color albeit thick and hazy, moderate to large frothy white clumpy lacing.   Bright mustiness, a touch floral, with some citrus zest as well.   Tart on the tongue, bright and bubbley.   Really zesty.   Wheaty background.   Did I mention bubbley... *BURP*   Moderate to full body and mouthfeel.   Really zesty on the finish.   Has a bright mustiness that is nice.   Lemony finish.   Pretty tasty, and clean!
3.8 draught@Erzbierschof Krone - hazy blond beer under a bright white and long lasting foam; cheesy and fruity (mango, star fruits) aroma; full-bodied, some sweetness and a gentle sourness; long aftertaste of ripe apples, mango; more gentle funkiness and some residual sugars - balanced
3.8 The foam starts to build up immediately after opening the bottle. Pours a hazy yellow-orange color with a big big-bubbled head. Aroma is funky, fresh bretts, peach, lemony, some lacto, some exotic fruits. Taste is lemony, peppery, some dough, peppery finish, also a bit bitter. Not bad! The amarillo gives some extra peachiness to the aroma, and the taste is somehow special. Carbonation is rather high.
3.7 Bottle: Pours a golden color and topped with a finger of white head. An interesting aroma with the Amarillo hops added, sort of tropical fruit hoppiness swirling with funk. Just what I’d expect, I guess. Plenty of tart and a little fruit in the taste. Tropical, maybe some peaches. Tart dry finish.
3.7 Sampled April 2015 A steady pour into my large Tripel Karmeliet tulip produces a fat-two-finger thick, pale tan colored head. The beer is a light golden color that shows a lightly hazed, pale, straw-gold hue when held up to the light. The aroma smells of Brettanomyces funk, lightly tart notes, and dry, lemon citrus notes. As I dig more into this the hop character leans more towards sharp tropical fruit notes; touches of gooseberries, Sauvignon Blanc like fruit notes, a touch of kiwi, perhaps some starfruit, and just a spicy, sort of chile like tropical fruit character (without the heat). The Brett contributes an earthy, spicy character, a bit of medicinal / cleaner like aromas, and just a touch of barnyard character / muskiness; this last is a bit like a funky, french, farmhouse cheese. The beer is lightly tart up front, but gets a bit more so towards the finish. A funky, earthy Brettanomyces character combines with the tropical fruit leaning hop character to form a spiciness that is green, with lots of fruit overtones. This has a combined bite to the finish of both tartness and bitterness, as well as a bit of tongue coating astringency. Light notes of dried sweat, and medicinal overtones, and a sort of musty, dried cobweb type note are offset by notes of lime zest (both the lactic acid and hops contribute to this), gooseberries, spicy green mango, and fruity pepper notes are all found here. The body here is fairly light (there is a touch of lactic slickness and a viscosity here), and this is bolstered by a solid, effervescent carbonation. Quite enjoyable, but I am a sucker for sour and hoppy, and even when they are paired together. This is nice and easy drinking, but with lots of complexity in its simplicity.
