Prairie Phantasmagoria

Prairie Phantasmagoria

Phantasmagoria is an IPA that is low in malt flavors, but high in hops. We brew this beer as a nod to the big hoppy beers of the west coast. We use loads of citrusy and piney hops at the end of the boil and in the fermenter to make this beer a hop experience.

4.0 From a 355ml can on 18/7/2019. Pours a clear light golden with a small head. The nose gives you some fruit and piney hops, as well as a touch of caramel. Despite the claim of lack of malt, the flavour delivers more caramel, citrus and stone fruit, and a satisfying hop kick at the back. Full bodied with average carbonation. A not entirely typical WC IPA which is very tasty and beautifully balanced.
3.4 Strong piney earthy hop flavor with some citrus and bready malt Pours a hazy golden color with small creamy white head Interesting balance of hops and malts, wood, floral and fruity with sweet breadiness. Full bodied with medium low co2, lingering earthy hopiness Definitely not a fresh can that I got, but still well balanced and enjoyable. Wish the hops came through more. Will have to try fresh someday
4.0 Well I must say that this was a truly unique double IPA in many respects! Firstly, this poured from the can a surprisingly pale honey amber color that was possibly the lightest colored DIPA I've ever seen, as most have a darker hue akin to maple syrup, in my experience. A little murky, but has a pleasant white head and frothy lacing. On the nose, this was exceedingly tropical and fruity with juicy citrus hops dominating the aroma. The flavor follows as an intensely juicy hop bomb with tons of grapefruit, orange, and passionfruit, among other tropical hop flavors. Almost too juicy to a fault, this can at least did not have any balancing piney bitterness. Also surprisingly not much syrupy malt presence as advertised, apart from a well-rounded sweetness, but it's not missed. Full-bodied and filling, this would be a go-to one-and-done beer to enjoy as a dessert. My first introduction to the craftsmanship of Prairie Artisan Ales lived up to the hype surrounding this brewery!
4.0 At the brewpub. Exceptional. Hoppy and virbant but not cloying. Heavy oink fruits but with a softer pine aftertaste. Love it
3.5 Can. Juicy grapefruit citrus aroma with notes of orange and pine resin. Pours cloudy golden colored with a large off white head that has excellent retention and some lacing. Starts with juicy grapefruit and orange citrus flavors. Finishes dry and a touch bitter with pine resiny hop flavors that linger on the palate after each sip. Pretty nice IPA.
3.9 Owl Farm, Brooklyn tap: pours golden with slight haze and white head. Aroma is bright tropical fruitiness with noticeable malts. Taste is somewhat sweet, large and fruity, has a malty touch especially in the finish. Pretty good.
3.1 [12oz can from Total Wines, Naples, FL.] An opaque amber coloured pour with a thin cream head, with the look of a milkshake IPA; aroma of sour grains and some weak tropical fruit; malty taste with traces of pineapple and mango; developing in to a fruity sourness at the finish with clear signs of the alcohol. Not the best DIPA I've come across, but a decent attempt at something a bit different to the norm.
3.6 Good beer overall. An intense piney/floral flavor. The taste a little too floral for me, but definitely worth a try and one I will occasionally buy when I can find it for a decent price. Good body and a good finish. The finish is mild bitterness for a DIPA as most of the taste is that upfront pine/floral intensity.
3.2 Crisp and clear raw honey coloured glowing body with some orange and light amber tints along with a thinnish, single to two centimetre tall pure white head. Aroma of honey, alcohol, light hops, some citrus, a good deal of resin and pine notes along with a supportive malt scent and some lighter yeast elements. Medium-bodied; Strong rich honey and sweet resin flavours with some pineapple and tropical fruits at first, but the grain and biscuity malts kick in near the end, and are quickly overpowered by the alcohol and pungent and almost astringent notes that cut through everything. Aftertaste shows the sweetness at first with a light medicinal and pungent alcohol and funkiness with a little tropical fruits and resin hoppiness along with a grainy malt towards the end, but fairly well-balanced and still showing some good characteristics, but not amazing by any means. Overall, a decent beer, and perhaps aged quite well in certain ways, but even when factoring in the loss in hoppiness (of course), this doesn't show greatly and isn't worth trying to find or sample, especially at the price point! I sampled this stubby, twelve ounce bottle purchased from The Liqour Collection in Honolulu, O'ahu, Hawai'i on 23-August-2016 for US$8,95 sampled at my house here on the opposite end of this fine country, in Washington on 26-January-2019, about two and a half years after purchase.
3.2 Can. Pours unclear yellow. Aroma is strong malts, tropical hops, lichi, pineapple. Body is heavy and strong, malt forward, pineapple, lively carbonation, sweet fruity palate. Good, but with 3 months already too old.
3.4 330ml can at Kill the Cat, Brick Lane. Cloudy orange. Hoppy aroma, perhaps a little skunked. Butterscotch seems to rule. Caramel and alcohol in the flavour.
3.9 355ml can. Hazy orange with a white head. Aroma of pine, grapefruit, resin, caramel. Taste is bittersweet, grapefruit, orange, pine, resin, caramel, bitter finish. Medium body, soft carbonation.
4.3 12oz Dose. Naturtrübes gelbes Bier. Feiner heller flacher Schaum. Wunderbar fruchtiger Duft. Marakuja, Hopfen, Kräuter. Antrunk tropisch fruchtig. Marakuja, unreife Mango, Mandarine. Echt lecker! Die Alkoholschwere ist da, trotzdem süffig.
5.0 This was poured from bottle to glass. The beer has a great earthy aroma with not much head on the glass. Lacing was moderate. The flavor was earthy and hoppy with slight malt overtones. I truly enjoyed this beer.
3.7 Cloudy, brown and yellow colour with a small white head. Citrusy aroma, some malts. Decent malt flavour in the beginning, hoppy and bitter towards the end. Low medium body and carbonation, soft mouthfeel.
4.6 Can from Norm's in Vienna, VA Aroma: caramel, pine, citrus Appearance: clear golden with a white head Taste: medium sweetness, medium bitterness, Palate: medium body, sticky, average carbonation, long finish, Tasty
3.5 Can. Yellow hazy. Strong orange zesty, ripe oranges, hop dusty pine on nose. Full bodied, smooth, some abv, thickness. Pretty ok. Not a superclean lean dipa, but good enough.
4.0 12 fl oz can. Pours slightly hazy orange yellow. Grapefruit, passionfruit, papaya, bit of citrus stuff, touch of toffee. Nice soft body. Very good.
4.2 Unripe Mangofever, The PineAppleBoozeAffair & My Melting Mind💥⚡️🔥🌈Reizüberflutung!! Gleich!!🌪PHISH UP YOUR ASS🦄🌳🍄🤩 355ml Dose vom Crafty in Sacramento...
3.6 Restrained citrus pine aroma in a light gold pour. Hop forward balance with citrus fruit body and laid back bitter finish.
3.5 Pours mostly clear golden with a white head. Clean, candied citrus nose. Citrusy flavors. Thicker mouthfeel with some scrub midway through the finish.
3.6 Bottle from Kenny Road Market: gold pour, thin white head that leaves a ring. aroma of pine and floral. tastes are orange, citrus peel, floral, light to moderate bitter, little tropical, more pine, oat. oily palate.
3.2 Acquired in a four pack of 12 oz. bottles at a local beer store, this particular bottle is being poured into a tall chilled beer glass. Nice delivery, all hazy solid-gold liquid completed by a powerful off-white head that looks to be lacey. A sniff of the glass, herbal and field, a little different. Let's see if it translates. Hmm now. As happens often the taste blows by the scent. Not your usual IPA influences, I get instead a initial touch of honey, then a light hoppiness, toffee perhaps and biscuit. Different than expected and sometimes different is not bad. I will ponder this one over the next three bottles.
3.3 12oz can. Poured a hazy golden color with a medium sized head. Citrus, pine, and floral hops.
3.6 Clear golden yellow, with a decent amount of white foam. Smells oddly sweet, with vanilla aromas. That's weird. Taste is kind of sweet at first, with vanilla and then some pine. Dry, woody finish.
2.8 Aroma: Medium-high citrus, grapefruit, pineapple. Medium caramel. Appearance: Cloudy, dark straw body. Large, white head. Small to fine bubbles. Good retention. Flavour: Medium bitterness. Medium grassy, fruity, pineapple, grapefruit, spiciness, mint. Medium-light candied oranges, fermented peaches/moonshine. Slightly sweet finish with fruits, grassy. Mouthfeel: Medium body. Medium carbonation, smooth. Overall: The beer feels more like an mild IPA than an Imperial IPA. There is an peach/moonshine/hot alcohol note that detracts from the overall beer. 355 ml can, poured. 22A. Imperial IPA
3.5 Really hits the spot. Totally appropriate weight, sweetness and bitterness. Hops very much take a backseat but retain presence...deft touch. Despite the commercial description I did not find this particularly malty.
3.8 Draught at Plan 9 Alehouse. Pours clear gold with a medium, frothy white head, medium retention. Moderate fruity and floral hops and bitterness, medium biscuit malt and a dry finish. Medium body and carbonation.
4.0 Can from 504 Craft Beer Reserve, New Orleans. Fruity hop aroma with tropical fruits, pine, citrus, grass, bit dank hops, pale malt is there as well, grapefruit, touch of pineapple. Flavour is light to moderate sweet and medium bitter. Body is medium. Nicely balanced IIPA, pine with lots of tropical fruits and grass. Good!
