Propeller London-Style Porter

Propeller London-Style Porter

Based on a 200-year-old recipe for Porter, a brew whose popularity changed English beer-making methods in the mid-1750s. A dark full-flavoured beer but smoother and less bitter than stout. Made with softened water, Propeller London Porter is a blend of pale, roasted and chocolate malts, hopped with English and North American varieties.

3.8 Parfum rôti et torréfié baignant dans la cassonade. En bouche c’est rond, duveteux avec des notes généreuses de café. L’amertume florale avec l’appuie de l’espresso donne un tonus bien apprécié.
3.7 650ml bottle pours a nice brown color with a good 2 fingers of light beige head which leaves behind some fine lacing. Aroma is roasted malts and chocolate. Taste is roasted bitterness with some sweet malts underneath and a light hoppy bitter finish. Medium body and abundant carbonation leave a nice feeling on the palate. This is a pretty fine porter and highly recommended for a tasting experience.
3.7 Bottle. Pours deep brown with long-lasting tan head. Nice soft mouth feel. Chocolatey aroma. By far the most prominent flavour I discerned was Ovaltine. Very original and sumptuous Porter.
3.7 Highly carbonated brew with with tan head and tea black colour. aromas are smoked and roasted malts and some sweet chocolate note as well. palate is roasty charcoal but medium bodied. A very good brew to warm the winters night away in Halifax.
3.6 Draft served in a pint glass at The Old Triangle. Pours a dark, opaque brown color with a tiny beige head and spots of lace. Aroma of roasted malts, chocolate, sugar, root beer, coffee, and a distinct lactose note. Flavor of milk chocolate, roasted malts, flat coffee, earth, and nuts. Medium-bodied, with sharp carbonation and a roasty, just barely soured mouthfeel from the lactic element. Solid porter.
3.9 Love this beer. Probably my favorite of style. Great initial fizz as soon as it hits my mouth, then aromas of coffee, vanilla and maybe a hint of maple??? Very lightr in the mouth which may turn some off but is a plus for me.
3.4 650ml bottle. Pours black (I held it next to a light. It’s a black hole..) with a light brown head. Aroma is pretty much lightly smoked cocoa, with some earthiness, and wood notes. Thin bodied, with good bitterness, and big coffee / cocoa notes, a little citrus, dark bread notes, and a little dough in the finish. It’s good, but with the thin body, it comes across a little watery. Worth trying though.
3.9 650ml bottle. Dark brown with a good chocolate maltiness, hints of smoke. A bit light for a porter, it wasn’t very heavy or bitter.
3.0 650mL bottle, pours dark brown / black with a medium lingering beige head. Aroma of light cocoa, light roasted notes and a hint of coffee. Flavour is similarly mild, with the cocoa and roasted notes upfront. Light-bodied, with not much going on. Pretty standard porter.
3.7 On tap at Propeller in Halifax. Pours out dark brown topped with a rocky tan head. Aroma was of sweet chocolate, dark roast, caramel, and a touch of smoke. Taste was more of the sweetness, some pit fruit, a touch of brown sugar, and a little of that smoke on the end.
3.5 Bought this one in Edmonston, N.B. when I was on tour with my band (summer of 2009 and drank February 2010). Comes in a bomber bottle and pours a dark brown with red highlights. Its head is big, beige, creamy with great retention and creamy-bubbly lacing. The nose is mostly roasted malt with some hop, nuts and only little notes of coffee and chocolate. Not too thick of a mouthfeel, but not too watery either. Just a little sticky and kind of refreshing as well. The taste is good, but not too powerful. Roasted malt again mostly, with some toffee, coffee and mild bitterness from the hop. Overall well-balanced and not so-punchy London porter to be easy-drinking.
4.0 650ml "bomber" bottle acquired via beer trade... Aroma - The beer gives out a nice roasty arome, with loads of chocolate and caramel notes, some dark fruit, vanilla, and a little smokiness to it. Not super-intense but strong enough. Appearance - The beer has a dark brown, opaque body, topped by a rich, yet airy light caramel head. Lots of small bubbles can be visible at the start. Head retention and lacing are quite good. Looks like a beautiful porter to me! Taste - Starts out pretty sweet, with chocolate, vanilla, and caramel notes and a very nice roastiness. Then comes a bit of earthy hops and a touch of smokiness. The finish is fairly bitter, with lingering roasted notes. There is nothing unique about this porter, but everything about it is just very tasty, so it tastes excellent Palate - Medium body to it. Quite effervescent at first, which is normal for porters, this beer becomes quite mild after. No trace of alcohol. Moderately dry and bitter. The drinkability is great on this one. The beer goes down like a charm. Being not too thick and not at all boozy, it is super sessionable, all the while being delightful. Overall, this is one of the finer Canadian porters I’ve had, and probably one that’s closest to the British examples of the style.
4.7 Great beer. Nice flavour. Taste of chocolate, with a nice roasted taste. Very smooth.
3.1 From a bottle. This was very dark, thick, and rich, with chocolaty notes, but a chalky, bitter finish.
4.0 pitch black pour, with a lively beige head. Big aromas of cocoa, roasted malts, and brown sugar. Flavor is smooth, and creamy, some cocoa finish with a touch of coffee.
3.5 650 ml bottle from Bishop’s Cellar (Halifax). Pours a very dark brown with a hint of red and a small tan head. Nice big roasty aroma with chocolate, some coffee, a touch of dark fruit. Flavour is a nice combination of sweetness and roastiness with cocoa, coffee, a little woodiness and a bit of dark fruit. Roasty, lightly dry finish. Good.
3.9 650ml bottle. Pours black with a tight tan head that laces out slowly. It’s all dark malt on the nose; roasted coffee, chocolate and a hint of caramel that all follow through nicely on the palate with a long dark finish. Probably the best thing these guys make.
3.7 Bottle (thanks to moniker) at a tasting Appearance : Black small head. Aroma : Hops, roasted malts with notes of dark chocolate. Taste : Sweet roasted malts. Lots of chocolate and caramel. Notes of butterscotch. Nice roasted malt profile on the finish. Overall : Lot of chocolate but maybe a bit too much butterscotch. Still a good beer.
3.9 Pours dark with creamy head. Tastes of roasted malts, deep flavours. Finishes smooth. Very nice porter.
4.2 What can I say; this is freakin’ tasty. Not sure if it is BJCP Porter but very very nice. Black with a creamy head. Started to pour early from the bottle. Dark malt scent. Big roasted malt, dusty chocolate flavour. Like drinking dusty chocolate cookies. Excellent!!
3.5 220z bomber from 16th St.Liquor in West Vancouver. Milk chocolate aroma, with mild coffee notes. Deep garnet, hint of red around the sides of the glass, good sized toffee head, nice lace. Coffee, bitter roasted malt aftertaste. Seems like a Bitter towards the finish. Pleasant mouthfeel, and bitterness. A very good Porter.
3.0 On tap at the Paragon in Halifax. Generous amounts of creamy head , root beer colour. Chocolate on the nose. Surprisingly less bitter then I would have thought of the style. Roasted sweetness initially on the mouthful but the chocolate sweet chases the bitter.
3.8 Pours dark black, large frothy cappucino coloured head. Aroma is nutty, roasted malt. Flavour the same. Smooth silky mouthfeel, finely carbonated. Very rich and enjoyable!
3.5 Tap@Propeller Brewery, Halifax. Black beer with a strong head. The aroma is roasted and bitter, and the flavour is roasted and bitter with a yeasty element to it. Overall a nice porter.
3.6 a truly impressionable brew, this is one beer that I can get at my local store that makes me smile every time my eyes pass it on the shelf. Suggested to serve in an english pint or stem but I feel the best one ?i had was served in a Belgian Chalice.
3.7 Bottle thanks to matt7215 via trade. Pours black with red highlights when held up to a light. Huge rocky head that threatens to spill out of my glass a few times. The head retains well and laces nicely. Aroma is earthy with hints of chocolate, ash, copper and apples. Tastes very metallic (in a good way) with coffee, gala apples, ash, earth, and a long semi bitter finish. Creamy mouth feel. Nice Porter. Thanks Matt!
3.5 Bottle, thanks to hobbersr for sharing. Pours a very dark brown, nearly black, with reddish flashes. Huge pale tan head that slowly reduces, with pretty, short-lived lacing. Nose is dark honey, lovely raw oats/oatmeal, roasted malt, ashy smokiness, raw steel, hot copper, nice earthiness. Flavors of copper/blood, nice ashes, ballpoint pen ink, coffee, roast, clean acid, mild apple. Good, not great.
3.9 650mL bomber shared with my brother who brought it back for me from a cross-country trip. Big thanks to my brother! Pours a deep dark, opaque brown with a small tan head. The aroma is very nice, mostly roasted and chocolate malt, small tin factor from the subtle hops. Flavour is equally nice, chocomalt and toasted barley, very well integrated bitterness to match the sweet malt body. Everything is subtle and in good balance, it’s a very well crafted and integrated brew. Very smooth and elegant, goes down fast! Great session porter. I’m pretty glad my brother picked this up, especially given I don’t have to wait for the LCBO now to take FOREVER to bring this in.
3.5 Bottle courtesy of matt7215. Pours brown with a generous tan head. Smells of dark fruit, earthy, caramel, brown sugar. Tastes of tea, earth, raisins. Light spicy finish.
