Rahr & Sons Stormcloud IPA

Rahr & Sons Stormcloud IPA

During a fierce storm on his voyage across the ocean, William Rahr could be heard yelling from the tall masted ship: "Roll on old sea! And when you are done, when the storm clouds have destroyed themselves, we will still be standing and drinking!" Today, we have created the ultimate ale for a voyage such as this: A German-Style IPA - a traditional India Pale Ale with German Influence.

Our German-Style IPA is brewed with a blend of all German malts, hops, and yeast. It has a rich maltiness with both floral and spicy hop characteristics. So get ready and hang on - Stormcloud will see you through your roughest seas and straight on to smooth sailing. Editor’s Note: This beer was reconfigured in 2009 with new hops and yeast.

3.3 355 ml bottle. Hazy orange with white head. Smell is hoppy citrus. Taste is caramel malty with floral fruity citrus hops. Semi dry with medium bitterness and low carbonation.
1.8 Just not that good of a beer aroma appearance taste palate make it an overall a weak offering
3.0 From bottle. Picked it up at Spec’s on Eastchase in Fort Worth on the cheap. Looks good in the glass; clear copper with a bit of white head that is gone about halfway down. Nose is not particularly pungent--some biscuit malt but not much else. Nice bitterness, slightly sour toward the end. Harsh finish, but in a good way. Solid, but far from spectacular. Rahr doesn’t break any new ground here, but it’s a nice part of their portfolio.
1.3 Bottle to glass. Smells like trash... Tastes even worse. Don’t know if this was skunked or if this is actually the taste. Scared to try it again. I poured most of it in the sink.
1.9 Pretty tame stuff. In fact, I would be pressed to call this an IPA. Faint floral hop aroma and some malts. Light copper color. The palate was light with below average carbonation. The flavors were not very pronounced. Very slight hops bitterness with a slightly sweet malt background. Actually, pretty bland for an established brewery.
1.8 At first it tastes literally like piss but halfway through its not so bad. I really dont like it all in all, the aroma isnt so bad, but the taste is obnoxious in my opinion.
2.3 A very average style IPA. Pours a straw yellow color with white head. Not a whole lot on the aroma, but some citrus and pine. Palate actually has more malt than hop notes. Not terrible, but not something to go out of the way for.
3.8 Serving: from tap at Tolbert’s Restaurant. Aroma: none detected. Appearance: small, frothy off-white, initial head with excellent lacing and mostly diminishing longevity. Clear, medium-orange body. Taste: lightly sweet, floral orange initial flavor and moderately bitter finish with average duration. Palate: medium body, creamy texture and soft carbonation. Overall: great. Interesting, sweet flavor at the front and hoppy bitter finish. Thick, creamy palate. I would like to drink this again.
2.8 [Bottle] Clear and light brown in color. Not much foam on top. Low carbonation levels. Mild hoppy aroma is overshadowed by caramel malts. Earthy hops in the taste. Low to moderate bitterness, but not much else happening here. Light in body. Taste reminds me of an ESB in ways. Tasting notes from 2012.
3.0 Little bit hazy amber, off-white head. Aroma has some hops, but not very strong. Smooth and a little thin. Alright, but there are other IPAs I prefer.
2.9 Draft @ DFW. Deep amber colour with a thin head. The aroma tells me this is old school IPA, without a prominent hop signature. Moderate bitterness, some biscuity, caramelly malts, medium body, sweetish finish and no real brightness at any point. Not a bad beer, but a little dated.
3.3 Sampled at the 2014 Untapped festival in Fort Worth. Pours a clear golden orange with a tan head that dissipates to the edges. Aroma has notes of grass and light pine with a hint of resin and a pretty strong grain backbone. Flavor has lots of grass and grain with just a bit of pine coming through in the finish.
3.4 Bottled sample from Knappster in San Antonio. Golden colour. Bitter up front. Very tadty
3.1 Slightly cloudy orange/amber pour, thin off white head. Nose is hops & malt. Bitter. Middle is sweet, slightly creamy malt and soft fruit. Finish is somewhat dry and bitter. Not an IPA to my taste, but an OK beer.
2.8 Location: 12 oz bottle from World Market - Houston Galleria, 10/8/13 Aroma: The nose is on the dull side with some grainy malts and some mild earthy hops Appearance: It pours a clearish caramel-orange color with a beige head and plus lace Flavor: The flavor is muted and a little buttery, it does not have enough bitterness for the style Palate: The body is light-medium, it has a soft carbonation, and a dryish finish Overall Impression: This beer doesn’t taste like it has German influence or IPA influence. It isn’t a terrible beer or anything, but honestly, this one feels mostly like a miss to me.
3.4 Pours a dark copper color with a thick tan foamy head. Interesting aroma of dried fruit and spicy herbs. Kind of a clean fruity flavor reminiscent of a belgian ale. Toasty malt, a herbal Jagermiester flavor note as wel. Overall, interasting, but i am not sure if its an IPA...
2.8 12oz bottle. Rich amber color. Thin aroma of roastiness. Taste is overwhelmingly of sweet caramel malts. Not a lot of hop action going on. Pleasant, even tasty beer, but not very IPAy at all.
3.5 Rahr’s beers are underrated. All of them have a signature caramel character. This one included. It’s not a great IPA, but it’s a delicious beer.
3.5 Draft at the Brewery The IPA poured a clear amber with a lasting white head. While at the brewery there was a strom cloud that dumped rain for about 15 minutes. I also tasted the unfiltered version as well. The aroma was of earthy hops. There was balanced bitterness with average carbonation. All beers tasted had an excellent medium body and were well made. The finish was dry with a slight lingering bitterness.
2.9 From a cask at GingerMan Ft. Worth. I don't smell much of anything. I don't know if it's the smoke in here or what, but it's weak; can't smell anything. It tastes super sweet. I immediately think apple cider. Not what I would consider a "traditional" IPA.
3.0 Bottle poured a clear reddish amber with a lasting amber head. Aromas of carmel, earthiness and woody hops. Palate was medium bodied and smooth with a dry finish. Flavors of carmel and earthiness with a smooth dry lightly bitter lingering earthy finish.
3.0 Comes out of the tap a clear, appetizing amber, not much head but that is from the pour. Aroma is more malty than hoppy, not too strong but inviting. Flavor, happily, exceeds wheat the aroma promises, hoppy and woody with a fruity and malty undertone. Sweetness balances the evergreen bitterness. Mouthfeel is firm, rough and fizzy, leaving a lively, hoppy finish.
3.7 Definitely not the west coast IPA I was in the mood for, but very clean malty sweetness with apparent hop character.
3.6 Dark copper pour with thick khaki head. Lots of thick lacing. Very malt aroma for ipa. Lots of caramel and bready/toasty Munich malt aroma. Mild yeast aroma. Earthy and grapefruit aroma. Well balanced flavor. Definitely more of a European ipa style but a little more bitter and hop forward. Lots of caramel. Earthy hops. Pretty dry finish. Mild yeast flavors. ---Rated via iPhone
3.9 Had it out of a bottle, poured a nice frothy head and a strong hop taste with a good bitter finish!
3.8 In my top 10, would buy again! Good, strong hoppy bite, nothing like I’ve ever tasted before. Next up in the custom 6 pack is Stash.
2.2 Large bubble carbonation. Nose of wet hop but not strong. Teases with mild fruit up front, followed by prolonged bitter. I’m a hop head, but this is just bitter. As it warms, a little more malt to balance.
1.9 What looked like a very good looking ale, turned out to be a hard swallow.
3.0 Floral, spicy hops and grain in the aroma. The taste is similar, with muted (for an IPA) hops and a good malt backbone. Dry finish of chewed-out peppermint gum. Goes down easy.
2.8 Clean sweet apricot nose. Fruity metallic with a decent lingering bitterness. Ok. ---That dog will hunt!
