Rahr & Sons Ugly Pug

Rahr & Sons Ugly Pug

Ugly Pug is a schwarzbier, or black lager. But the real story is its name. Fritz saw his mother-in-law’s pug, Oscar, lounging in a chair and he (Fritz) shouted, “What an ugly pug!” Everyone laughed. Your’re right – they were drinking a test batch that night.

3.7 Can: Pours deep, clear, cola-brown with a tight beige head. Lactic chocolate, earthy caramel scent. Taste is slightly bitter, roasty/earthy chocolate malt. Rich, almost sticky/tacky body/feel... Very decent, and pretty tasty and comfortable..... (A little bias on this one, as I’ve had the pleasure of having 11 pugs as my children in my lifetime.....) thanks to shrubber85 for the share.
3.3 Originally rated on 2/17/09. Not much in the aroma department, appearance was a deep brown/ black, with plenty of carbonation, decent head that left some lace. Mouthfeel was average with a carbonation bite. Flavors of toasted malts, and chocolate these were a bit on the light side though. Overall it is the best Rahr beer i have sampled yet, and its a decent interpretation of the style
3.6 Can. Sour milk, chocolate malt, and hay aroma. Chestnut brown with large tan head. Smoky, lightly sweet chocolate malt, and mildly bitter hay flavor. Good body. Tastes way better than it smells.
3.2 Pours mahogany, shimmery beige head, kind of fizzy. Aroma is caramel and earth. Somewhat crisp on the tongue. More caramel, tea leaves, celery, toasty malts. Not bad. Not remarkable.
3.1 Obtained with a number of other beers in a flight. Serves up very dark brown, almost black with a nice tan head. The scent is burned toast and I mean that as a compliment. A taste of the brew gives out smoke, molasses and more of that bread. Savoring it after swallowing I get a nutty finish, perhaps pecan. Black lagers with a higher alcohol kick do more for me. But I do not complain.
3.3 Half finger of head on a dark brown body. Aroma is roasted malt and a little caramel. Taste is roasty, toasty and caramel. Good profile. Texture is crisp with soft edges. A solid Schwartzbier.
3.1 On tap dark brown with a white head. Aroma is roasty and sweet with dark fruit. Taste follows nose.
2.6 Dark copper creamy head. Aromas caramel, light toffee light grass.Flavors light toffee, caramel light grass. Medium to light body, lightly sweet, bland aftertaste.
3.7 Pours a dark, dark brown color. Not at all black when held to the light, even some clarity sneaks through. First striking feature is a well pronounced smokey character which is quite predominant both in the nose and taste. Excellent roast malt. Flavor is well developed but a little short of anything fantastic. Sometimes one-dimensional, simple roast caramel malt. A little bit of hoppy character somewhere in there. All in all a fresh black lager, very enjoyable.
3.4 Bottle. Pours very dark clear ruby with a diminutive head. Nose has chocolate, burnt malt and vanilla. Mouth follows suit with a finish of chocolate malt. Crisp, neither sweet nor bitter with low carbonation and a smooth palate.
3.0 Tap at Flying Saucer. Pours black, tan head. Aroma is chocolate, malt. Stout. Flavor is chocolate, malt. Stout. Decent.
2.4 20 oz. at California Pizza Kitchen at DFW airport. Consumed on 2.11.16. Medium to dark brown. Moderate amount of light taupe head. Amber hue to the liquid. Simple, malty aroma. Toffee scent. Toasted to roasted malt taste. Light to med body. Soft and smooth in palate. Reasonably lively. Boring but inoffensive and accessible. My notes are few, which often is a sign of an underwhelming beer. Not the most interesting craft beer, actually one of the least interesting craft beers I’ve had.
3.0 Bottle: Poured a caramel brown and tan head. Aroma is bubblegum and Malts. Nice soft malts little sweetness in the finish.
4.0 Pours a dark brown color with tannish colored head. Roasted malts and a little raw cocoa on the nose; follows onto the palate. Full bodied. Finishes with roast, and smooth.
3.1 Draft at Hoffbrau Steaks, Amarillo. Diamond bright chestnut with mere wisps of foam. Served very cold, so scant licorice and metallic aromas barely make it out of the glass. Garden variety gingerbread malt structure and a fermentation character that prints a bit homebrewy are not overly impressive. Big body for a sessionable lager.
3.0 Rated based on notes taken 3 July 2012 -- Good but unremarkable Black lager.
3.1 (Bottle) clear dark brown with a small brown head; aroma of stewed fruit, roast; clean flavor with a long, light bitter finish
3.6 This is brown in color with a 1 finger head and no lacing. Very nutty in taste as well as aroma. The mouthfeel has a bitter/biting taste to it
4.2 Black thick beer. Not a stout but great sipping flavor. Not great mfor after soccer, not what I would call refreshing. However a really enjoyable sit back brew.
3.0 Dark brown with pale tan head. Coffe in the aroma. Malty flavor with a little chocolate.
3.6 Deep brown with a light tan head that dussipates quickly. Aroma of roasted/toasted malt. Medium body. Lightly toasted flavors on the palate.
2.2 Draft. Dark brown color, tan head. Aroma of burnt caramel. Taste is similar, light body. Not a fan.
2.8 Appearance: attractive, very dark brown with ruby/caramel highlights and a big, frothy, creamy tan head that slowly shrinks, leaving rich swathes of lace. Aroma: wet newspaper and metal shavings, grassy hops, mineral water, light chalk and roast. Taste: light chocolate and pumpernickel toast, mineral water, grass, cardboard. Finish: dry, with flavors of talc and wet grass. Notes: Looked pretty, smelled lousy, tasted average. Bottle from Buddy’s (Drive Thru) Beer Barn in El Paso, Texas.
4.1 Great chocolate malt flavor with a great finish and a medium fill to it. I would recommend this to anyone!
3.7 Taste is of roasted malt, burnt toady, light caramel. Disappointing shirt finish and very small amount of bitterness. Overall full of tastes malt flavor. ---Rated via Beer Buddy
3.1 Bottle. Pours dark brown with a decent tan head. Aroma of roast, chocolate and coffee. Flavor was malty sweet with roasted malts, chocolate, coffee, light caramel and some nuttiness.
5.0 I just love every bit of my Pug. Since moving to the Atlanta area, my search for a comparison is on the downward slide of 7/3.
3.4 Thanks to crajun for the trade! The body is a clear very dark brown that hides beneath a frothy, chunky tan head. The aroma is malty, nutty toasted malts, maybe a touch of chocolate or coffee from the roast malts. No hop aromas. The flavor is nutty and sweet, again no hop bitterness that stands apart from the balance. I’d like a bit more body, but this is still a nice drinkable beer.
3.2 Had at the Great Arkansas Beer Festival 2014. Pours dark brown to black. Thin bodied. Roasty flavor with slight coffee and burnt malt. Not bad.
2.4 Subdued aroma. Thin, almost non existing head with light lacing. Well balanced flavor with a hint of bitterness.
