4.2@ 45 deg F, cocoa dominates aroma with hints of toasted bread. Has a nice coffee-like bitterness, but it clashes with the up-front sweetness of the dark malt profile. Medium body. Goes down easy. Very solid beer.
3.8Dark pour, finger of tan head. Nose is roasted malt. Bittersweet. Middle is coco and dark fruit. At the finish, "Someone got malt in my chocolate; someone got chocolate in my malt." Worth the effort.
4.2From a 22 oz bottle. Pours dark brown with large head in a Lost Abbey chalice. Aroma of chocolate, vanilla, amber malts, light bourbon. Significant carbonation and mouthfeel. Flavors of rich malts, milk chocolate, oak, light bourbon. Rich, flavorful, relatively easy drinking and not too big in alcohol.
3.5Super dark brown, almost black with almost no head. Aroma of fruit and dark roast coffee. Flavor is similar, with a little alcohol and some coffe-like bitterness. Pretty good. On deck...the bourbon barrel aged variety.
3.6Aroma is a nice fruitiness mixed with coffee notes. Has a nice black body with minimal head. Flavour is sweet cocoas and coffee with a hint of apple. Smooth mouthfeel. It’s a fine and unique stout.
3.6Pours dark brown with small tan head out of bottle. Aroma of malt, caramel, and toasted nuts. Flavor similar to aroma with emphasis on the toasted nuts.
4.2Long Neck--> pint glass. Dark brown, large head. Aroma of rum raisin and molasses with notes of vanilla and pecan, very complex and hard to pin down. Hoppy taste, aftertaste brings back most of the aroma plus subtle spices and notes of espresso at the finish. Alcohol well concealed. Too much hops for the interesting mix of flavors but I don't notice it so much after a couple sips. It's a very decent ale and very tasty.
3.8Deep mahogany pour with a nice tan head and good placing. Aroma is toast, nutty, and burnt caramel. Taste is nutty, toast, caramel, and some char. Has some subtle bitterness to balance the light sweetness. Medium body. Good beer. Definitely my favorite Rahr 6-pack.
3.9Draft. Dark brown color, nice beige head with decent retention and lacing. Aroma of toffee, candied dried fruit, burnt caramel. Taste has plums, raisins, dark roast. Very tasty.
4.0Pours a dark brown almost black color with tan head. Roasted caramel malt, a little spice, and charr on the nose; follows onto the palate. Finishes warm and roasty.
3.8Much better than I remember. Nice malty and caramel aroma. A bread crust brown color with a good foamy head. Weighty palate with decent carbonation. Full feeling. Bready malt flavors with burnt sugar and spices. Overall a good beer only to be bettered by the bourbon barrel version.
3.3Dark brown with a thin lasting tan head. Sweet malt aroma. Medium body with lots of malt with a little hop bitterness. I prefer drinking this beer just below room temperature i.e. 60-65 degrees. Filling finish.
4.2Great beer. The only thing I wish for this beer is that it had more aromatic malt. It is perfect for a cold night. Great beer overall.
3.5Great winter ale, with coffee and chocolate notes, followed up with slightly burnt bitterness in the finish.
3.412 oz bottle compliments of TJ. Poured the color of cola with sweet malty nose. Sticky sweet malt backbone, caramel and raisins. Slight bitterness at the finish, practically disappeared as it warmed up. Delicious ww!
3.6The aroma is malt forward with notes of toasted malts, caramel, and nuts. A dark clear garnet-brown hue with a very thin tan head, which quickly forms a ring, and minimal lacing. The taste is surprisingly rich; not robust, but very rewarding. Roasted malts, toffee, caramel, with hints of nuts. There is a slight hoppy/peppery finish. Medium-full body with moderate carbonation. Overall, I liked this beer and would drink it again - winter or not.
3.2poured a dark cola color with some ruby in the light. this beer poured zero head so im really wondering if i had purchased an old bottle. the aroma was sweet, you pick up caramel, coffee, brown sugar. the taste is not as sweet as aroma but you definitely pick up the coffee and sugary malt taste. i was a little worried to try this after having no head with an aggressive pour but this beer was good, give it a shot.
2.9A - Pours cola brown with 1 finger of tan head.
S - Milk chocolate, sugary malt, vanilla, roasted malts. Smokey aroma as it warms.
T - Dark caramel, roasted malts, caramelized sugar, bitter dark chocolate, brown toast, nutty yeast, hints of grapes and under-ripened berries. Bittering hops adds earthiness to round off the finish. Citrus comes out on the aftertaste.
M - Moderate carbonation, light side of medium, almost thin body. No alcohol to speak of. The carbonation drops off toward the end.
Warming without the alcohol showing up. Nice cocoa and roasted malts with a solid strain of nutty yeast to glue everything together. The mouthfeel was the weak link but it wasn’t a deal breaker. Everything tasted young and fresh. I’m gonna try and out one away for a year or so.

4.3Pours dark brown with a small tan head with allows for a very savory aroma. Best drunk from a glass with a large mouth for better enjoyment of this ale’s sweet, malty fragrance. It tastes great and will be my go to winter seasonal in the future.
3.5Good dark ale on a cold day. Not an everyday drink. Tasted better once the ale set and warmed up a little.
3.7Bottle from secret Santa 2012 - blutt59. Pours dark brown color with tan head. Chocolate and toasted malt aroma. Toasted malts and chocolate flavors with some caramel. Medium body with moderate carbonation. Thanks Bob.
3.8Bottle. Pours a clear amber with a small frothy beige head leaving sticky lacing along the glass. The aroma is a bready malt with caramel and roast. Thin mouthfeel with a rich malt and chocolate with a bready finish. Easy to drink hiding the alcohol well. A good English strong ale from Rahr.
3.0Bourbon aroma. Dark brown appearance. Mild bourbon flavor. Sweet malt. It is ok. Sweet malt aftertaste.
2.9Decent for Rahr, but not worth trading for. Smooth sweetish taste, that comes close to a strong dark.
4.7Pours dark brown with hints of red at the edges of the glass and a small yellowish tan head. Smells of rich malt, hints of caramel and chocolate, and a touch of woody hops. Taste is sweet with a nice balance of chocolate and caramel, no real bitterness present. Full-bodied with a smooth texture and very soft mouth-carbonation, Rahr and Sons Mild Winter Winter Warmer finishes with a lingering soft bitterness.
3.612oz bottle pours cola brown with a very thin tan head. Aroma is dark and sweet, roasted malt and raisins. Taste adds a bit of spice and wood.
