ReaperAle Mortality Stout

ReaperAle Mortality Stout

Nearly solid black in color, this is a full-flavored complex brew of roasted barley, sugar and a hint of honey. Once poured, the smoky aroma melds nicely with the creamy head for a beer drinking experience not for the timid. Brewed at Sudwerk for ReaperAle.

3.8 22 oz. bottle via trade with daknole- thanks again, Dak! Pours a dark, opaque, hazy brown with a small beige head. Aroma of milk chocolate, cream, coffee, lightly roasted malts, brown sugar, and caramel. Flavor of milk chocolate, cream, roasted malts, brown sugar, caramel, tobacco leaves, dark fruits, and earth. Medium-full bodied, with low carbonation and a smooth, malty, earthy mouthfeel. Very nice foreign stout, with a lot of chocolate and enough complexity to keep things interesting.
3.0 Thanks to IBrew2or3 for the share. Pours dark brown with a tan head. Nose is slight roast, slight grain, some vinegar and some chocolate. Flavor is similar with a kind of peppery chocolate. Not my cup of ale.
4.3 Not quite as black as death, but close. Carbonated tan head. Dry stout with a myriad of complex flavors. Some coffee, barley, roasted malts, cereal and a tiny hint of citrus. Rated 9/17/08
2.7 Pours black with a small light brown head. Aroma is disappointing with toffee, salt, pumpernickel, light roast, dark chocolate, and a small amount of medicine. Flavor is better, but still a wee bit off with dark chocolate, coffee, but too much toffee and salt. Finishes slightly sweet with a little chocolate/roast, but there’s a tangy burnt sensation that I just don’t like. Medium bodied, with highish carbonation and a slightly prickly mouthfeel. Pass.
3.3 Pours a moderately thick black with a nice but dissipating head. The aroma had chocolate, toffee, and was slightly sour. The taste was a nice roasted taste with some chocolate and then the sour shows up again. Not a bad stout at all if it wasn’t for the off sourness.
3.5 Bottle from cwsample. Dark pour with a nice brown head. Aroma is alcohol, cocoa, and a little coffee. Taste is lots of bitter cocoa, caramel, coffee, and alcohol.
3.5 Bottle courtesy of cwsample. Dark brown appearance with little light emerging through. Tan head dissipates quickly enough. Big roasted smell with bits of dry wood. Bitter dry notes with the essense of belgian flavors? Taste is bitter roast upfront. Dry finish that increases over time. I am very curious to see what yeast they used to give a slightly fruity element.
3.7 Pours pitch black with a nice dark foamy head. Roasted chocolate scent. Bitter delayed after taste with a dry finish.
3.8 650 ml bottle from Bev4less. Pours an opaque black color with a medium tan head that has fair retention. The aroma features dark roasted grains, milk chocolate and mocha. The taste is similar to the aroma with loads of layered chocolates, earthy hops, walnuts, vanilla and mocha. The palate is full and malty smooth. The finish is long, dry and chocolaty. Overall: I was pleasantly surprised by this brew, this is a very good chocolate stout.
3.9 Very, very dark with a dark tan head. Aroma of chocolate, but some other spice was mixed in with a dark toastiness. Flavor was a slightly burnt chocolate - more burnt than I would normally like. Finish is short and bitter like baker’s chocolate. I didn’t expect this to be as good as it was.
3.8 Bomber from ericandersnavy. Pours opaque black with a multifinger foamy tan head. Smoky aroma with roasted dark malt. Medium body with moderate carbonation. Flavor is smokey - much like smoked porter. Very well balanced. Finish is neither sweet nor bitter - but with time the bitter tends to dominate.
3.7 For a stout, this was somewhat disappointing. When I drink a stout, I expect much bolder smells and flavors than this. Its dark impenetrable color and lingering thin head say it is a stout, but its thin texture and nonexistent aroma speak otherwise. It is, for the most part, a sub-par stout. It is, however, very palatable and very drinkable for its style, and possibly enjoyable for those who do not enjoy the style as much, but far from my favorite stout.
3.1 650 ml bottle I am always willing to try a new stout but this one was subpar. Were it any other style I probably would have passed on it because just sitting on the shelf it gave off bad vibes. Still if you are determined to try as many stouts as possible or everything in California buy one. I just recommend coming in with very low expectations. Aroma / Appearance - Fluid and black it at least plays the part of a stout. The appearance is a little watery and has only thin chunks of head rather than a beautiful crown. Dark bitter chocolate is not bad but the soy or olive aspect hits the nose hard. Were it not for that defect this would be average rather than subpar. Flavor / Palate - The smoky start is promising that the aroma is just an aberration. However it soon falls apart on the throat with a mix of chocolate and soy sauce. This is not the worst stout (far from it) but there are definitely flaws that could be improved. I’m glad I only had to drink one glass rather than the whole bomber.
3.6 Bomber via trade from BMan1113VR. Pours black with a 1-2 finger creamy light brown head that has good retention. Aroma is roast, light coffee, a hint of char, blueberry, toasted pine nuts, and what seems like a hint of lactose, reminds me a bit of Dark Horse Tres. Flavor is roast, stale/slightly burnt coffee, earthy/woody notes, more berry notes, and a touch of smoke. Palate is medium bodied with a slightly creamy, neutral entry, medium fairly sharp carbonation and slightly dry finish. Good stuff, fairly complex and relatively light on the palate
3.1 0.65 l bottle at Monks Café Wallingatan, Stockholm. Black color. Roasty and berryish aroma with blueberry and red currant. Tastes old and stale but not in a completely bad way. There are woody, vinous, medicinal and berryish flavors, soya sauce, balsamic vinegar and red currants. Interesting but also controversial, not completely in balance. I’m sure not whether I like this or not.
3.8 Pours dark black with a tan head. Smell is lots of roasty malt, with a little dark fruit. Flavor is more roasted malt, with a strong roasted aftertaste. There is a little bit of chocolate in the taste as well. Not a very complex beer, but enjoyable none the less. Recommended.
2.7 An interesting and complex beer that somehow misses the mark. Black w/ a pale tan head of fine bubbles which quickly dissipates. Nose is tart and slightly fruity w/ the expected whiff of roasted grains. Flavor too is slightly tart, mildly sweet and fruity. Light mouthfeel (for a big stout) and prickly carbonation. I am not quite sure to make of this, w/ the fruity and coffee overtones it reminds me somewhat of a raspberry chocolate candy but the balance is slightly off.
3.2 Bottled 65cl @MC Dark black-brown color, small beige-brown head. Blackcurrant, licorice, oak, medicinal aroma. A bit sour, some vinegar, licorice, some wood. Feels a bit infected. Lingering balsamico in the aftertaste.
3.9 Pours black with brown accents. Frothy tan head welcomes the first few sips. I’m going to be subtle here now. The nose is complex, smooth malt, mineral, and chocolate. It tastes like a milky malt with a hoppy finish and a hint of honey. The palate is incredibly smooth. It leaves lacing on the glass that’s enough to look at. Now on the sandy side of heaven won’t you take me home.
4.1 500ml bottle. Opaque black pour with a thick beige head. Sweet pungent dark fruit aroma. Certainly falls into the Milk Stout/Foreign Stout category. Sugary, with lots of sweet chocolate tones. Really well done for the style. The alcohol level is such that it gives it a nice medium to full body, while retaining a nice semblance of drinkability. The hops perfectly balance the sweet brown sugar flavors. Excellent beer.
3.1 22oz. Bottle: Aroma of roasted malt and slight Diacetyl. Poured black in color with a medium-sized, creamy, dense, brown head that diminished but lasted throughout. Opaque. Slightly sparkling. Flavor is light to medium sweet. Tastes of acetic acid, chocolate, coffee, roasted malts, slight cream, and more acetic acid. Light to medium body. Tingly texture. Average to lively carbonation. Acetic acid, chocolate, and roasted malt finish. Way too much acetic acid.
3.5 Bottle. Pours a black body with a small off white head. Aroma is mocha, fudge, coffee, some sweet aromas as well. Flavor is coffee, malty, slight smoke, hint of bitter, some off metallic flavor. Bubbly mouth.
3.4 Poured a nice black. First sips were heavy with lactic acid, but that quickly and thankfully faded rather quickly turning into a passable, enjoyable stout.
3.5 Bottle. Pours with a black body and a mocha colored head that lasts for a little bit. Decent lace. Aroma of licorice, honey biscuit, chocolate, red licorice, and fudge. Light fruity esters. Taste is light coconut, fruit, licorice, and chocolate, roast. Finishes with a leathery smokiness. Feels a touch thin for the style, medium carbonation. Mocha and coffee been finish with a tinge of vanilla. Nice.
3.6 black with a khaki head. chocolate, syrup, coffee, dark fruits and vanilla aromas. not bad on the palate with a flavor of coffee and roasted chocolate.
3.3 22 oz. bottler served in shaker- poured a solid black when held to a light source, no carbonation, aroma of a charred malt, blood, and evil (’bout time they made a brew), laced like water. Hits the mouth with a high-medium body, malt is burnt but has a coffee linger (interesting), middle retains more of the same, finish makes you ponder 2 minutes to midnight. Overall- not something to actively seek, but if one falls upon your lap, crack that puppy open and see what happens. Enough said.
3.7 Bottle from Kegs & Barrels in Plano, TX. Pours dark brown/black with thick tan head. Aroma of clean dark roast and baking chocolate. Flavor is exactly the same with a nice dark roasted bitter. Mouth feel is med-heavy body with high carbonation. Overall, not bad at all!
2.4 Ok this looks like a stout but the taste has this sweet sour chinese food thing going on...surprised and disappointed. Anyway will finish this bottle.
3.1 Bottled. Pitch black colour, not much head. Aroma is mild sour wood, lots of black and red currant as well as some mild fruityness. Flavour is sour fruits, red currant, some mild burnt wood, toffee and dark dry fruits. Also some mild cocoa and roasted notes. The slight sourness is quite strange, but otherwise a decent brew.
3.5 22 oz bottle. Dark brown pour, light tan head. Dark malts, caramel, cocoa, roasted coffee, notes of dark fruit, citrus, and a bit of sourness. I enjoyed the beer, but overall it’s pretty average.
