3.7 Nice beer. Really nice beer. The beer had a concentrated type flavor to it with big prominent malt flavors. Big notes of burnt sugar/caramel and floral notes like rose-petals. It was very enjoyable. The nose and flavor were both very similar to those of bourbon or cognac with a lot less alcohol. However, the alcohol was very, very present for 11% and I thought it was very well done. My type of beer.
3.3 Draft @ Balileys 2010 vintage. Deep orange pour. Aroma of big ripe fruits and berries with some rich caramel. Taste is syrupy, warming booze, , some more ripe fruit and caramel. Good treat, but almost too rich and syrupy to enjoy an entire one myself. Not sure how age affected it, but it seemed to still be bursting with flavors.
3.1 Bomber, Fall 2010 vintage, from Wine Warehouse in Charlottesville. Pours a clear, viscous looking amber with not much of a head. Aroma of toasted malts, caramel, raisin and tinny hops. The taste is caramel, toasted malts, stone fruits, booze and a hoppy finish. Medium-full bodied, low carbonation and significant heat.
3.5 Tap @ Bailey’s Taproom (2010)... Poured a honey amber/burnt orange with a bubbly white head. Nose had a hint of oxidization. Bread-like malts, big sweetness, apricots, alcohol burn. Mild carbonation with a thinner palate. Honey, candy corn, medicinal alcohol qualities.
2.2 A weird beer. Don’t even know what to say, but its not pleasant, a weird corn character of sorts. And some other strange notes. Iunno.
2.8 Bottle shared with a friend. Leaves a little bitterness at the end of the sip. Aroma is nice with smell of alcohol undertones. Not great for a limited release, but not a bad beer overall.
4.0 22oz bomber from Binny’s poured into a snifter. Bottled August 30, 2010. Pours a dark copper with about 2 fingers of white head. Aroma of fermented fruit. Lots of dark stuff, plums and figs. Booze and ether. A lot of caramel and a little vanilla. There is a lot going on here. Taste is medium sweet. Lots of booze. It’s got a light burn, but not in a good way. It’s in the way of when you get water up your nose it burns. Full bodied with a thick and sticky texture. Lively carbonation and an insanely long finish. I think I’m still going to be tasting the finish when I go to bed tonight. Overall, it’s pretty good. Very different from anything I’ve had. I definitely understand why this is a winter warmer. I think I can turn off the heat in my house while I’m drinking this.
3.7 Eisbock’s are so cool and creative. Unfortunately they taste way too strong. I bought the big pint bottle too, so it was a struggle to get through two glasses. Worth it though. Minus the flavor, this is an excellent beer.
3.8 Malt, brown sugar, and caramel in the flavor. More of the same in the flavor, with a little vanilla and some alcohol, not shocking for something with 11% alcohol. Finish is smooth but a little on the watery side. Really, really tasty beer. One suggestion--I bought this is a 22 ounce bomber, but I really could have gone for a smaller bottle. This ones a sipper.
3.7 Bottle from Fall 2010 pours ambers with light tan head. Aroma of sweet breaded malts. Flavors of fruitiness, spices, and cinnamon sugar buns. Alcohol well concealed. Very nice limited release from Red Hook.
3.7 Bottle and served in NB Worthy glass: Beautiful ruby highlighted amber hue with a fading but still hanging on frothy film, some oily legs. The nose displays big arse heavy caramel and roasted malts, plenty of base grain too but there is a vinous acidity that kept it from smelling like post mash "Malt De Force". Some mineral, astringent medicinal and minty hop vapors as well. >p> The taste is big and brash, yeah sort of sweet and cloy but Christ sakes what do you expect from an Iced Bock? Thing is there is enough brash alcohol and spicy hop leftovers to keep this from becoming an absolute mess. I have had EKU 28... this isn’t anything like that, not nearly a thick or syrupy. The mouth feel... well yeah it is slick and sticky... is not that the point? A wonderful sipping brew but it is also something you really do not want to have again anytime soon.
3.9 Bottled on Aug 30, 2010 enjoyed on 10/4/2011 I found this bottle at a store I don’t normally frequent, and since I never tried it when it came out, I pulled the trigger. Pours a crystal clear deep copper color with a decent foamy beige head that shows moderate retention and leaves decent lace. I can smell the sugary sweet fruit as soon as I pop the top. Closer to my nose with the glass brings out some dark fruits like plums and cherries, some dark sugar and caramels and a surprising amount of ethanol for a beer that’s over a year old. This smells like a barleywine quite honestly. Taste is sweet and fruity up front. I get some sugars, but not what I expected from the aroma. Slightly earthy hop bite is present but obviously faded. Alcohol provides a bit of warming, but luckily is not as strong and the nose suggested. Medium body, sweet fruity almost sticky mouthfeel, light level of carbonation. Not having this fresh really skews my perspective because this doesn’t seem like a bock to me. This is a pretty good old ale or barleywine at this point, I enjoyed it
3.1 Pour is a dark amber. Aroma is mostly hops with a hint of caramelly sweetless. Flavor is wow, loads of alcohol, but you’ll expect that at 11%. Decent malt character, but overwhelmed a bit by the hops and alcohol.
3.2 Poured an amber-red color that had a slight off white head that faded away quickly. Carbonation seemed minimal. Aroma had a mix of fruits, caramel malts, and alcohol. Flavor seemed to be really sweet mostly with a molasses flavor and some cherry notes. Alcohol was present but not overpowering. Full bodied.
3.6 a solid beer. Notes were damaged but here’s whats left Sweet malt upfront subtle hop bitterness at the end. Very drinkable for 11% ABV
1.5 Clearly this just isnt my kind of beer. Im tasting a thick, sweet molasses syrup that is both bitter and fruity at the same time. Somewhere between apple juice and possibly a malt concentrate, is not for casual drinking, you have to be dedicated or at the very least, share a 22oz’er with a friend. Half a bottle started to make me feel a little sick, like I just overdid it.
3.4 22oz bottle 9/7/11 (Binny’s Plainfield)-44° in Snifter-Pours a dark orangish amber with a small one finger off white head. Aroma of caramel, toffee, and malt. Taste of the same with more sweetness. This full bodied brew goes down way to easy. Hides the ABv very well.
4.2 (tap) honey-amber colour with small of-white head; aroma of dried fruit; slightly sticky palate; flavour of honey and dried fruit, beautiful
2.0 Bright amber. No carbonation and no head (none was expected). Fairly chewy malt aroma lacks nuance, maybe some dull fruits in there. Sweet palate, again with no nuance. Chewy stuff, vague caramels and sticky syrups. Light alcohol in the finish.
4.0 Dark amber like maple syrup, thin off white head. smell malt and dried fruit,\. taste malt, sherry, apricot, mild hop. no lacing. low carbonation, warm alcohol feel. flavor doesn’t last long in the mouth, but can be felt in your breath.
3.5 22 oz. bottle shared by shigadeyo. Pours a clear deep amber color with a small off white head. The aroma has sweet caramel malt, fruity with a fair amount of alcohol. The flavor has more sweet caramel, brown sugar, ripe fruits and some earthy bitterness. This one is a bit hot; no hiding the alcohol here. Flavors don’t linger on the palate. I’ll give this one credit because I didn’t have high expectations.
3.2 Redhook Eisbock 28 Pours oily clear copper with almost no head to speak of. Aroma of frozen concentrated apple juice all day long, with slight hints of metal and boozy undertones. Flavor is a lot less apple juice than the nose would suggest. Like a dopplebock with more alcohol (no shit Sherlock!). Minor bitter note on the finish. A boozy gut warmer for sure.
2.9 sweet malty aroma, golden, clear, white foam, light sweetness, lightly bitter, medium body, creamy, soft carbonation, light alcoholic finish.
3.7 Wow Redhook makes a good effort at a tough style. Really captures the essence. Bright big fruity bouquet of berries and plums bursts out, also along with some caramel. Syrupy, warm, a bit of booze in the palate, thick, chewy, slight tingle to the tongue but well integrated and not overdone. Toffee. Very rich sipping stuff. By the way, this is dark orange and relatively clear. Nice. Now to try to find another to age!
3.3 Thanks to HenrikS for this one. Dark amber coloured and hazy. Has an off-white head, medium duration. Fatty, sweet aroma, caramel-notes. Flavor is heavy to harsh sweet, light bitter finish. Warming alcohol. Syrupy texture.
3.7 Bottle. Slightly hazy amber with small off-white head. Flavour is malt, caramel, fruit, hops, bitter and a little pine.
3.8 At a tasting, thanks Shahar, pours stunning deep red with a small head, aroma of toffee, caramel, molasses, wood, brandy, cherry and raisins with a touch of soy sauce, flavor is hoppy balanced by loads of malt, butter, toffee and fruit cake, full bodied, very nice
3.8 Bottle 22fl.oz. @ HenrikSoegaard Sommerhus Tasting - Handrup Strand. Clear medium to dark red amber colour with a small large, frothy, good to excellent lacing, fully lasting, off-white to beige head. Aroma is moderate to heavy malty, caramel, marzipan, sugar, moderate alcohol. Flavour is light heavy sweet and moderate bitter with a long duration. Body is medium full, texture is oily and sticky, carbonation is soft, finish feel is moderate alcoholic. [20110626]
2.0 Bottle @ Tel Aviv tasting. Red, clear, scant head. Looks suspicious right off the bat. Smells hot, chewy and fuzzy. I can tell where this is going. Smells like a mess. Is hot and honeyed in a bad way. Heavy, syrupy with a spicy but sour finish. Tastes like a mess too.
3.6 Bottle. Pours a red amber with an off-white diminishing head. Aroma with notes of butter, fruits, nuts, malt and caramel. Finish is sweet with notes of alcohol.
