Redhook Late Harvest Autumn Ale

Redhook Late Harvest Autumn Ale

As the fall days grow shorter, beer drinkers naturally start their migration toward more robust, full-bodied brews. Late Harvest is an easy-drinking, yet flavorful brew that features a deep chestnut color and unique, roasted malt aroma and flavor. Late Harvest’s rich flavor is the result of using four different malts, yet the robust profile remains balanced and sophisticated, thanks to our two distinctive hop additions.

Late Harvest pairs nicely with grilled burgers or any tailgate cuisine.

1.6 I don’t know what happened here. Poured with a nice, medium sized, foamy, frothy, cream colored head that lasts and some lace. Color is a clear red amber. Aroma is dirty feet. Flavor is malt, bitter citrus, yeast, and something sharp I cant place. Body is decent and so is carbonation. Finish is like flavor with a little alcohol.
3.2 From a 12 oz bottle this poured a rich amber color with white head and decent lacing. Nose of malts, citrus hops, with a decent mouthfeel. Flavors of malts and hops, with a mild and slightly bitter finish. I was surprised to learn it was an amber. Pretty good beer
2.2 Pours a clear, perfect amber with a 1 finger, creamy white head that has decent retention and leaves a little lacing before it fades. Aroma is citrus, toast, cereal and mineral. Flavor is grain, hay, citrus, pine, spicy hops, grass and a strong odd planty sour note. Palate is fairly light bodied with a slightly slick feel and a heavy, strong carbonation. I wasn’t a huge fan of this beer, just an odd malt-hop combination or something, it really didn’t come together very well.
0.8 Dried leaf nose with a quite a bit of DMS. Clear copper, thin head. Potpourri and then straight to salty cooked vegetables. Even some chlorophenols in the finish. I know this isn’t a premium beer, but does it have to be awful too? I’ve had macros that were at least drinkable. Offensive.
3.0 to me this one tastes leafy along with an Autumn like sweetish malt flavor and a hint of hop. Yes it did finish warm and a bit chalky actually i probably sensed the smoky essence as described. Kind of off balance but interesting in that regard and what one has learned to look for in this catagory. Bit of eccentric dried fruits lends class and body. it has its place and would suit certain old fashion, hearty dishes well. For that matter it would probably cook well.
3.4 12 ounce bottle from Whole Foods Market Fairfax, VA. Pours a clear amber color with a medium fizzy tan head. Decent head retention and lacing. Aroma of caramel, toasted malts, plum-like fruit notes and a faintly hoppy finish. The taste is toasted malts, bitter hops, a faint bit of chocolate and a caramel finish. Medium bodied. Drinkable. Decent.
3.4 bottle, orange amber with creamy off white head, aroma is mostly malt caramel, flavor is spice, caramel, hoppy pine, finish is medium with some bitterness
2.9 On tap at Old Chicago Thornton poured a clear orange amber with a lasting amber head. Aromas of carmel, light fruittiness and a hint of spicy hops. Palate was light bodied and smooth. Flavors of ,carmel, earthiness and a hint of fruittiness with a smooth lingering malty finish.
3.2 Pours amber with medium head.. nose is malty. medium bodied, flavor is caramel with a hint of bitterness. Finishes warm
3.1 Pours an orangish color, with a light tan head. Malts and brown sugar flavor, with a little bit of hops added too. I actually like it just fine. Thumbs up.
2.5 Bottle. Wasn’t crazy about this one. Sweet up front with a very dry finish. Not much stood out in the flavor. Overall disappointing.
3.2 12 ounce bottle. Picked this one up because it was on sale and I was in the mood for an autumn seasonal. Poured into a basic tumbler glass. The first thing I notice with this beer is the clarity, as it’s crystal clear. Nice, full, 2 inch head that’s well constructed. Aroma is best described as subdued. Less polite, you could say that it just doesn’t seem like there is anything there. Faint malts, maybe, if you stretch for it. Happily it tastes better than it smells, with a crisp malt bite and some nice sweetness in the finish. Flavor is pretty good, actually. It hits you with a rush of brown sugar up front, followed by dried apricots and peaches in the finish. This one doesn’t have a lot of aspiprations. It’s meant to be an easy drinking autumn seasonal, and in that regard it’s quite successful.
2.9 12 oz. bottle served in shaker- poured a transparent copper with maroon undertone, medium carbonation, 5mm white head quickly bubbled away to a white ring around the glass, light lacing. Aroma of caramel, malt, and wheat. Hits the mouth with a light medium body, malt is there but water comes rushing in, middle has a light hop feel to if, finish is sweet- but fades quickly. It was on sale, it’ll work.
3.1 Bottle. Pale amber appearance with a little head. Aroma is some spicy pine hops and caramel malts. Flavor is caramel, fairly rich roast, with a little hop bitter. Not bad.
1.7 Appearance: medium clear amber/orange. Aroma: apricots and maybe peaches, some light caramel malts and some woody hops. Taste: a slight malty flavor, then some medium-bitter hops. Finish: bitter, slightly floral, slightly fruity, and mild. Notes: unremarkable seasonal.
1.7 I thought this one stunk pretty bad. No discernible palate or specific flavor. It just seemed kind of ambiguous and not really having a flavor. Threw some ingredients in a bottle and it came out brown, so they called it autumn ale...but it’s lame.
3.4 Light amber, good head. Light fruit aroma - like peaches - mixed with hops. Taste has a light fruit taste too, but with a nice balance of bitterness. Finish is bitter and that fruit feel is still there.
3.5 On tap at Eb and Floes, Bald Head Island, copper very slightly cloudy with a fairly big taste, sweet but not too much, brown sugar and cookies.
3.2 Bottle at a friend’s cookout. Pours light coppery brown with smallish head. Thought this would be a boring Oktoberfest, but it’s more of an amber that leans toward an Oktoberfest. And surprise, it’s pretty solid, especially given that I don’t like either style. Nothing earth shattering here, but this is a pleasant beer for an Indian summer night by the grill.
3.3 Light brown color/ tan head. Sweet spicy caramel malt extract aromas. medium bodied. Easy drinking spicy toasted caramel flavors with mild brown sugar. not bad. tap@ The Real Pickle SHV
3.5 I like the new embossed Redhook bottle with the split label - although the labels themselves are lame. Medium-dark, mostly clear apricot color. Light caramel APA aroma, with some powdery-perfumy overdraft. Woody, a little astringent and crisp. Talcum powder tone that was evident in the aroma is definitely present in the high palate on a deep draught. Medium body, spirited hop finish, faint chocolate at the very end. Pretty well balanced, drinkable, solid enough.
2.4 Fresh 12 oz. bottle. The pour gives a dark and hazy reddish-copper body. A thick, frothy, lasting head of cream tinted foam yields pronounced, dense clouds and tattered ribbons of lacing all over the glass. The nose shows a weird, almost tart, yeasty twang atop peppery, doughy yeast and a mild caramel and bread malt base. Hops are mild to non-existant. The flavor is equally misguided, again based in toasted caramel, with hints of dehydrated dates and slightly tart currants. Tangy yeast seems completely out of place. There’s very little bitternss, Though it’s fresh, this has either turned bad already or is just a bad recipe, the latter of which is entirely possible considering the brewery we’re talking about. The palate is semi-dry, with moderate to lively carbonation and a somewhat dragging consistency. Not good. Just not good.
2.7 Not a bad amber. Decent malty flavor, though I wouldn’t really agree that this has a "rich complexity"
3.1 Bottle. Pour is a nice light brown, almost orange color with a thin, wispy offwhite head. Good look for an autumn ale. Nice, light caramel malt aroma with a bit of cinnamon and a soft hop background. Starts with a light, lemony citrus hop kick before the malts take over. Malts are roasted with the slightest hint of caramel and a warm, cinnamon-wood finish. I’m not much of a Red Hook fan but this is good for the style.
3.1 Bottle. Pours clear copper with a small eggshell head. Aromas of roasty caramel, a little gourd, brown sugar, and a touch of pumpkin spice. Flavors are roasty malt, caramel, and cinnamon. A little sweet and sour, with medium carbonation. Alright.
2.9 From the 12 fl. oz. bottle - 2010 batch. The pour is a nice looking copper-chestnut color with a thin beige head. The aroma has a bit of malts but there are also fruits along the lines of pears or peaches rather than your atypical fall aromas such as apple or pumpkin. The mouthfeel is medium. The taste has a bitter, lingering bite but it really does not remind me much of autumn at least when compared to other autumn ales. Drinkable in its way.
3.5 12 oz bottle into English pint. Aromas of cotton candy, caramel, grain. Pours a pale copper with a medium head that dissipates fairly quick, leaving a fine blanket of foam and some pretty good lace. Taste is sweet and sour and finishes long and bitter. Highly carbonated with a medium-high body. Overall, a pretty nice amber.
3.4 Pours a coppery light brown with gold highlights and quickly dissipating off-white head. Light aromas of toast, raisins, caramel, chocolate, vanilla, and pear. Starts moderately sweet with notes of apple, chocolate, and spice, finishing with mild coffee bitterness. Medium body, chewy texture, average carbonation.
2.9 Bottle. Pours a very nice looking hazy amber with lasting off-white head. Aroma of subtle caramel, very faint smoke and obvious citrus/pine hop presence. Flavor has a decent malt back bone, light nuttiness, grassy, faint sweetness, pine and light fruit notes, bitter finish. Mouth feel is pretty solid, medium body with high carbonation. Overall, it’s ok....
2.8 On tap at Redhook Portsmouth. Pours a very nice light brown almost red color. Scent of toasted malt and light cinnamon. Lightly hopped taste at first, then slowly mellows to a sweetness that leaves a very nice smooth aftertaste.
