2.9Aroma of caramel, soy and coffee beans. Color is dark copper or light brown. Sweet malted candy flavor with noticeable hop presence. Pale so far as brown ales go. Medium body and somewhat chalky. Not the best brown around.
2.9Bottle. The pour was a Carmel brown with a large (2-3 finger) light tan rocky head that quickly receded to a thin spotty film and a very small collar with some very light spotty lacing.
The aroma was of a toasted biscuit malt, a very mild resin hop and a doughy yeast with notes of caramel, a light cocoa and a mild nuttiness.
The taste was lightly malty sweet with a mild hint of a caramel sweetness at first and then had a light bitter presence with a hint of cocoa and a mild nutty feel towards the end. The flavor was around for a little while and was of a mildly bitter caramel taste.
Mouthfeel was light to medium in body and watery in texture with a moderate carbonation.
Overall a pretty basic beer, which was actually quite drinkable but nothing special...
2.2Location: 12 oz short bottle from Colonial Wine and Spirits, 4/30/12
Aroma: The nose is fairly subtle with some hints of nutty and toasted malts
Appearance: It pours a clear orange-brown color with a fizzy, quickly dissipating, off-white head
Flavor: The taste is also a little on the dull side as well, with some light sweetness and not much else
Palate: The body is light and rather watery, with an overly fizzy carbonation that hurts the drinkability
Overall Impression:
I wasn’t a fan of this one. Honestly, I just didn’t felt like it worked at all. The nose was dull, the taste was bland, and the body was both watery and too carbonated. I’ll probably try to stay clear of this one.
2.5Draft. Brown and hAzy. No head from waiter. Typical brown ale. Quite drinkable but nothin to write home about.
3.4Pours to a finger length, off-white head that dissipates fairly quickly. Not a lot of lacing. Nutty, malty, slightly caramel scent. Smooth flavor is just like what the smell indicated - nutty, malty, slightly caramel. More body than Newcastle, and less skunky. Not as chocolatey as Abita Turbodog. Nice example of the style. Redhook’s Long Hammer IPA may suck, but this brown ale and their ESB are quite good.
4.3Underrated. A very smooth brown ale, unadultered. Similar to Newcastle. This ale does it right by the old tradition of nut brown ales.
3.212oz stubby bottle picked up at The Grapevine
Appearance: Pours clear dark brown with a medium sized beige head and good lacing
Aroma: Toasted malts, nutty and caramel
Taste: Toasted malts, nutty, with herbal/medicinal finish
Ok, easy drinking and smooth
3.312oz bottle - pours clear amber with thin beige head. Nose is caramel. Flavor is a little nutty, more caramel and slight hops. Taste is sweet and ends a wee bit bitter. Very middle of the road and easy to drink.
3.0Pours deep garnet into a shaker. Soapy off white head with medium retention recedes leaving scant lacing. Dusty caramel aromas. Sweet sour caramel front to back and into the dry metallic finish.
3.1Pour orange red with nice lacing. Faint malt aroma. Taste is better. Malty with nutty and metallic taste. Alittle sticky. It’s an ok beer.
3.1Poured into a tulip glass. Beautiful finger of off-white head. Deep copper color, tending towards transparent.
Malty, hay smell.
A little nutty taste, but it’s overpowered by bigger malt, kind of ripe red fruit taste, then touch of bitterness. It’s a bit disjointed profile.
Crisp and medium body, moderate carbonation.
It doesn’t really hit the "brown ale" category. Fairly average ale.
3.2Pours dark brown with a small tan head. Very slight aroma of malt and toffee. Flavor hampered by thin watery palate, but some nice brown ale flavors of brown sugar and malts.
1.9Grassy smell up front, hidden nuttiness and caramel beneath the grassy hops(which seemed odd to be in the forefront of a nut brown, very invasive). Tast is nutty, dry subtle baking chocolate, ok carbonation and mouthfeel a little assertive feeling, almost biting. Then the swallow and finish it is so metallic that it ruins the entire experience.
2.7A wonderful looking beer. Faint malty aroma. Thin body with a little hop. Some medicininess in the finish. Unremarkable and something of a disappointment
3.4From tap at Taphouse Grill. Pours clear and golden deep amber with a small white head. Aroma is mild malty and toasted. Toasted malty, caramelish and mild sweet flavoured. Bitter, toasted and light caramelish into the finish. Dry and lasting malty impression.
3.0Very good. Light bodied combined wit a mild taste - but not a Fireside Nut Brown.
3.0Pours a clear red, nice white head with some lacing. Aroma is mild but sweet and malty. Flavor much the same. Meh.
3.4Pours a clear soft brown. The slightly off cream head does not last long. The carbonation stays soft through out. Caramel in the nose with a hint of cocco. Medium sweetness coats the tongue with a slightly sticky sensation. This reminds me of Pete’s Wicked Ale back in the late 80’s-early 90’s; a balanced American Brown Ale.
0.5I am sitting here wondering how out of all the redhook beers that are widely distributed, how this one got one of the highest scores. In all honesty, it tastes like if you took a dirty dishrag, dunked it in dirt water, and then squeeze that out into a glass and poured a cheap half shot of well voldka in it. YUCK. for $15.00 I should have known better.
3.3Bottle at Dayton Ale feast. I thought this was a nice brown ale that separated itself from the pack of lesser browns. A little tastier roasted malts and hop balance compared to others. nice.
3.4Clear copper pour at redhook brewery. Aroma is very faint grains and wet bread. Toasted nuts. Nice medium body.
3.5Wet copper, tan head. Nose is caramel, nuts (walnut and pecan?)
Taste is nutty, woody, very smooth...moderate sweetness....a very pleasant beer....another one that would be good with an after dinner dessert.
2.6Light-flavored, non-offensive and sessionable, but not the most exciting brown ale. Granted, the brown ale is not the most exciting style, but still. Light to medium body. Light malt flavors of toast, nuts, grist and wort. Barely discernible hops, though it does finish somewhat dry from its slight bitterness, and it’s balanced. Bit of an alcohol warmth in the aftertaste. Overall, it’s well made with no off-flavors (other than some wortiness, but most aren’t bothered by that), but like I mentioned before, it’s not very exciting. Perhaps that was the intention, though. Regardless, this would make for a good cooking beer.
2.622 oz bomber from Bi-Mart for $1.99. Pours a dark amber with a creamy head. Not much nose. Malt hits you first. No bitterness. No sourness. Very mild nut brown beer. However it is drinkable. A good everyday beer for the retail price.
2.6Pours a clear, light, red-brown with a thin ring of white foam. Aroma is toasted, grain, nuts, a hint of chocolate, planty hops and some grassy hops. Flavor is toasted nuts, cereal grain, a touch of roast, light chocolate, spicy, floral and sweet grass hops. Palate is light bodied, dry and slightly creamy on entry, off dry and a little chalky on the finish with a moderate strength, but sharp and blanketing carbonation. Didn’t really wow me, but it’s not bad as far as brown ales go.
3.5On tap @ Humpy’s. Clear amber/brown with a white head. Aroma is biscuit dough, nuts and some light chocolate. Flavor is rich and malty with just a light hop bitterness. Medium body with average carbonation and a clean, malty finish. This is a great nut brown, nothing wrong with this.
3.2Deep amber almost copper pour with light off white head and lace. Aroma is light chocolate and earthy hops. Flavor is caramel malt hinto chocolate and some nutty. Medium/light bodied. A drinkable beer.
3.1This bottle comes from the new 2011 Seasonal Batch. Bottle declares birth date as December 11th, 2011. The shape of the glass bottle is very attractive, small, but contains all 12 oz. It has a nice dark brown, with a foggy gray head. Tastes a bit spicy, but in the end is as good as any Nut Brown you will find.
2.5Bottle served in a dimpled mug. Soft malty aroma and flavor with a light hop presence. Pretty uneventful throughout. Very easy to put back.
3.2Good but fairly typical as browns go. Roasted malt, a little nutty, a touch of caramel sweetness.
