3.5 From bottle no. 033-10. It pours a murky amber-copper with a thin head. Thea roma is pretty nice with an appealing malty and floral hop character. There seems to be something akin to berry-fruits in the scent too. The body is pretty full. The taste is really rich in bitter hops with malts taking more of a back seat. A much more tolerable barleywine for me.
3.7 Bomber 2009 vintage poured a clear amber with a small lasting amber head. Aromas of toffee, sherry, raisins, dates and a hint of coconut. Palate was medium to full bodied and smooth with a lightly warming finish. Flavors of toffee, sherry, raisin and light earthiness with a smooth lightly warming lingering toffee finish.
4.0 The Dan Journal #458. Tasted 3/28/11. Purchased Fall 2009. 22oz bomber. Hazy with a brakkish brown hue with a subtle red highlight. Moldy ring of bone white head. Aromas of raisins and candy fruit. Sugary with a grape candy note. Mildly spicy with nuances of red berries. Full bodied with a bright bitterness and effervescence. A nicely diverse palate that hits on the bitter, dry and sugary sweet. A solid and noticeable alcohol note, but as it’s such a big beer, it blends well with the rest of the palate. Piney hops and dark dried fruits with a kiss of grapefruit astringency and other assorted citrus fruits. Nice with a big palate and quite ageworthy!
3.8 [bottle] Cereal grain, pumpernickel, pine and faint banana aroma. Hazy red-bronze under a lasting, thin, white cover. Blast of flavour: citrusy, spicy toffee and pumpernickel combined with bitter pine and sea salt. Bitterness is not assertive, which is good since the sweetness of this potent beer is subdued. No obvious alcohol. Very well balanced and not overpowering, despite the 10.1%. Medium body, moderate carbonation, almost clean finish.
3.4 Bottle - 2009. Pours a cloudy caramel color with a small sandy head. Very soft and subtle aroma is mostly caramel and faded citrus hops. Balanced flavor of citrus hops (lightly faded), florals, and caramel. Smooth and not overpowering.
3.5 Bottled. An unclear amber beer with an off-white head. The aroma has notes of hops, malt, and caramel. The flavor is sweet with notes of malt, hops, and caramel.
3.0 Clear medium amber pour, dense off-white head. Slightly doughy, boozy aroma, kinda sweaty and figgy. Sugary honey start, a touch of dried fruit, kind of apricoty near the middle, finishes sugary. Kind of sweet and one dimensional.
3.4 Bottle 650 ml 2008 Vintage Aroma rose berry aroma with raspberry tartness, sweet ending. Refreshing nose.7+ Appearance very nice appearance. Thick hazed amber with large bright white top. Good lace. Flavor and Palate : Medium bodied, central berry sweets, mineral earthy side and finish. Light dryness from hop , slight tartness with it. Neat , refreshing and quiet drinkable for its strength. Easy going. Finished 650 ml by myself and was looking for more…
3.2 Serving: 22 oz. bottle from Wegmans Leesburg. It pours a clear orange color with a small, foamy, off-white head. The nose has some light caramel and toasted malt notes, perhaps a bit of dark fruit in there. The flavor has a little west coast hop bitterness, plenty of caramel malt, some sort of odd woodiness, and an alcohol note that is a little obvious. Medium bodied with average carbonation leading to a medium, bitter yet slightly boozy finish. This one was just okay for me. The hops, malt, and alcohol didn’t quite seem to mesh like they should.
3.7 Bottle 22fl.oz. Unclear medium red - amber orange color with a small to average, frothy, fair lacing, mostly diminishing, off-white head. Aroma is moderate to light heavy malty, caramel, overripped, oxidide, dried fruit. Flavor is moderate to heavy sweet and bitter with a long duration, overripped fruit, caramel, barley wine - alcohol, acrid bitter notes. Body is medium, texture is oily, carbonation is soft, finish feel is light alcoholic. [20110223]
3.4 Bottle at Papsø’s - Thanks. Clear amber - white head. Toasted, bisquit, knækbrød, ok hoppy, light oxidation, dark sugar, caramel, piney, dried fruits. Classic american barley wine. Lovely.
3.9 Bottle at Papsø. Clear orange coloured with a small off-white head. Sweet aroma of caramel, dried fruits, hops and pine needles with notes of cookies. Sweet and fruity flavour of caramel, hops, cookies and pine needles. Hoppy finish.
3.6 Bottle. Hazy amber pour with a medium off white head. The aroma is sweet fruit, sugar, caramel and toasted malt. The flavour is biscuits, sweet fruit, heavy toasted caramel and hops. Complex.
3.7 cloudy brow, smooth white head. sweet malty, slighlty bitter. flavor is very nice malty, wood, sweet hoppy notes, sweet malts. very nice bw
3.4 22 fl oz bottle. Pours hazy orange with a small white head. Aroma is flat malty, slight wooden and pinewood hoppy. Dark caramelish and slight roasted. Bitter and dry pinewood hoppy into dry finish. Bitter and dry caramelish finish.
3.6 Bottle 65 cl. Courtesy of Beerlando. Slightly hazy amber with an off-white head. Sweet caramel, fruit and somewhat medicinal aroma. Solid body, lots of caramel, fruit and spices with some good hops, biscuity. Some licorice allsorts. Quite some hops in the finish. A solid American style Barley Wine. 230211
3.8 Review from notes, sampled 1/13/2008 Pours a crystal clear copper color with a reddish orange hue when held up to the light. Meager head dissipates to lace on the glass. Aroma is piney, grapefruity, citrusy hops, some alcohol and a faint caramel malt in the background. Tastes like it smells. Bit of a hop bite on the tongue and in the aftertaste. Body is a bit thinner than I expected, not much malt going on here. Overall its an ok Barleywine, the alcohol is well hidden by the hops. I would have liked a bit more of a malt backbone.
4.0 September 2009 bottle. Muddy brown pour with a nice big fluffy white head. Aroma was sweet caramel malts, lots of piney hops, lemon peel and a some heat. Flavors were semi-sweet malts, great hop presence throughout. The finish consisted of light yet lingering bitterness, dry. Absolutely smooth as can be, super drinkable. A fantastic Barley Wine from Red Hook.
3.4 Bottle. Pours an amber body with an off white head. Malty body sweet caramel, fruit tones, candied fruit , and booze. A bit salty and hoppy, pine and caramel with a big warmth. Okay.
4.0 Pours a golden red. Has a good sweet malty flavor with a descent amount of hop bitterness mixed in.
3.7 For a barley wine beer I was not expecting a smooth tasteful beer I could enjoy to the last drop. This beer has defied my barley wine perspective making it one of my favorite redhook ales of all time
3.5 I am not usually a barleywine fan. And here comes the but... this one doesn’t over alcohol me and I can still taste the original beer! Granted I did not age this three years and that might change my rating but this works for me right here and now. Grapefruit taste from start to finish. Nice sweetness that lingers after the bitterness leaves. The best of the limited releases from Redhook.
4.1 Decent head for a barleywine of varying sized bubbles that surprisingly does not last all that long. Sweet caramel aroma with lots of malts, brown sugar, ethanol and a bit of smoke. Color is a nice crimson orange. Flavor is loaded with sweet malts, caramel, a bit of spicyness and some peat. A very earthy barlewine. Pretty noticable alcohol kick and presence. Lingering smoked malts and caramel at the finish. Super smooth going down. I like this barleywine a lot.
3.7 Bomber. Light reddish brown in appearance with a half-inch of foamy head. Lots of caramelized sugar and malt aromas as well as brown sugar and rum. The flavor starts with a heavy dose of caramel and toasted malt followed by molasses, candied figs, resiny hops and alcohol. The mouthfeel is a little syrupy with medium carbonation and a sweet, boozy finish. Overall, I would say it’s a solid Barley Wine with a fairly smooth blend of dark sugar and malt flavors. It’s good to see Redhook finally venture into the land of strong beers.
3.9 Tap at Amesbury Ale House. Pours deep amber into a shaker. Off-white head recedes to hug rim. Orange citrus aromas. Well balanced with fruity citrus and dark caramel. Lasting toffee and hop finish. ABV very well hidden.
3.3 22oz bottle from Vegas. Pours a clear, copper-bronze color with a medium khaki head and foamy, sticky lacing. Big, sweet aroma with some caramel and hops with maybe some cherry? Pretty classic barley wine flavor but maybe a little thin. The bitterness is strong and leaves a little tingle to your lips. Okay
3.2 on tap @ Red Hook brew pub. Pours a dark copper red color with a decent amount of head with large bubbles. The taste is bright and fruity at first sort of like a tart pear, or apple. Would not have guessed the alcohol content was so high, yet it does have a slight warming finish.I drank the 2010 yet would love to try some of the aged bottles. I don’t know a lot about this style of beer. I’m getting ready to try a few more to get an idea of what it’s all about.
4.1 22oz bottle. Pours a deep dark amber. Slight head. Aroma is slightly spicy. Taste is smooth. A slightly caramel and maybe banana taste but definitely some kind of fruit-hop taste in there. Alcohol is well hidden. A lot going on but very smooth. A nice beer.
2.9 Bottle - Clear brown pour with a small white head. Really sweet with a decent amount of sharp alcohol. Pretty sweet taste, too. Caramel, with some sharp alcohol on the finish. Malty, but really not that much flavor. Just not sure what this one was trying to achieve.
3.5 Amber with a lasting off-white head. Heavy malt aroma with citrus hops, white sherry, alcohol. Sweet malty flavour with warm alcohol and citrus hops
