Reunion - A Beer For Hope 2010 (Terrapin Beer Company)

REUNION ‘10— Belgian-Style Scotch Ale. Terrapin Beer Co. and Taco Mac are once again participating in the Reunion: A Beer for Hope fund-raising campaign. The Campaign raises funds to support The Institute for Myeloma & Bone Cancer Research in the name of Virginia MacLean who succumbed to the disease in 2007.

This year’s beer is a Belgian-Style Scotch Ale – a nod to Virginia’s Scottish heritage. The beer boasts a deep amber color with a rich malt palate and subdued hop notes in the finish. We used an authentic Belgian yeast strain for complexity. The beer will be available in 22oz bottles and will be features on draft at Taco Mac restaurants in Georgia later this summer.

3.6 Pours a dark amber brown with an off white head and aroma of malt and fruits. Taste is toasty, of malt, fruits, and caramel with a dry finish. Subtle taste for a scotch ale, but not bad
3.9 Pours a brownish deep red. Nose is oak, wood and fruity. Taste is full of flavor, sweet with raisins and fruit. No appreciable bitterness, finish is dry, sweet and short. Alcohol masked quite well. Nice SA. Quaff Score 8 / 10
3.6 Nice flavor, dark pour. Some fruit taste, like dates. Overall, nice taste and good flavor. A little earthy, but a solid Scotch Ale.
3.4 Beer whatever for the Richmond Gathering 17, I’ll have to check out where I am at when I get a chance. Medium to dark amber. Aroma slightly of alcohol, some dark fruits. Flavor is a match, good residual sweetness, but not enough flavor my taste.

3.5 Solid Maltiness, sweet flowery yeast esters. Standard malt flavors- caramel, toffee, cereal. Nothing Fancy or exciting, but still more boring than even a well made Scottish ale would be. On tap at the 12 South Winter Warmer beer festival in Nashville, TN.
3.5 Pours dark mahogany with a small tan head. Caramel, yeast, and banana esther in the the aroma. Flavor is dried fruit, sweet caramel, and toffee-like with a warm alcohol finish and lively carbonation.
3.6 Bottle at The Funky 7, Brooklyn. Pours lightly hazy brown with a small, off-white head. Lightly toasted malts, caramel, modest yeast in the aroma. Sweet flavor, some caramel, spices, bread, yeast, fruits. Medium bodied with average carbonation. Faintly warming finish, light sticky sugars, caramel, light fruit, some nuts and toffee. Not bad.
3.5 Pours reddish brown w/ a 1" quickly dissipating tan head. Atomas of caramel, dark cherry, sugar and booze. Belgian yeast is secondary under the malty sweetness - a hint of saddle soap. Mouth is syrupy sweetness & lt carb that becomes dry rather than cloying. Med body. Flavors are cherry, caramel, milk chocolate. Hint of smoke and some bitterness balances things out fairly well. Alcohol and vanilla notes on finish. I liked it and wouldn’t mind another bottle.
3.5 Ths poured a cloudy brown color with a beige head. Aroma was malty caramel, some peat, and belgian yeasty sweetness. Flavor was caramel, some brown sugar and dark candy sugar. Somewhat interesting, pretty much what i expected from a belgian scotch ale.
3.5 Bottle. Moderate roasted and milk chocolate for the malt, light herbs for the hops, light to moderate dough for the yeast with raisin, brown sugar and alcohol in the background. Head is small, fizzy, off-white to light tan, with fair lacing and is almost fully diminishing. Color is hazy mahogany. Flavor starts moderately sweet and lightly acidic, then finishes moderately sweet, lightly acidic and faintly bitter. Palate is medium, creamy with a soft carbonation and a moderately alcoholic finish. Typical Scotch Ale qualities with some nice sweet malty overtones.
3.5 Brown-orange, beige cover. Aroma is candied apples, some estery yeast character, fruity. Taste is sweet, caramel, toffee.
3.2 Bottle:   Deep caramel, thin sudsy off-white head, sparce lacing.   Soft bready nose, a little dark, some peat and campfire (minor).   Bready on the tongue, some clove and banana.   Actually reminds me somewhat of a Doppelbock more than a Scottish Ale.   Very bready, heavy, with a rich biscuity touch, banana and clove on the tongue.   Yeah, this seems more of a Doppelbock or even a Doppelweizen because of the banana/clove that seem to round this one out.   Body and mouthfeel are moderate to full.   Scottish Ale... really?   Tasty, interesting, sweet, malty, biscuity, touch of dark pitted fruit with some banana and clove.   Its really like a Doppelbock mated with a Doppelweizen, that wishes it were a Scottish, with very little Scottish influence.   Does that make sense?   Yup, red headed stepchild of a beer.   Can’t beat the crap out of it, but still interesting enough to try to spend more time with it to see how it works.   I will say its fairly cloying/hefty.   Thanks to jtclockwork for the bottle!
3.3 Bottle 650 ml Aroma: initial pour was shy but if you continue pouring eventually light creamy dense top will appear. Brownish bottom gives good contrast. 3+ Appearance: caramel, deep clean sugars well paired with alcohol. Well build aroma set up. Slight earthy hints at back end. 7+ Body , Flavour , Palate and Final Notes: medium bodied. Rye bread feel , slight sourness , slight bitterness , touch of vodka. Finishing with vanilla , drop of red berry and Christmas. It’s not top of top beers but it does have hidden qualities. Not traditional Scotch ale , it has some of it , done in its own way. Good.
3.5 A brown ale with a thin off white head. In aroma, sweet fruity caramel malt with light curacao, light alcohol warmth, pleasant and smooth. In mouth, a nice sweet fruity caramel malt with candy sugar, light curacao, light alcohol warmth, very nice. Bottle at Big Deck tasting 2018.
3.3 22 oz. bottle via trade awhile ago - Pours a slightly hazy deep amber color with a small off white head. Aroma and flavor is lightly sweetened malt, spice yeast, and peat. Medium body. Not too bad.
3.3 Bottle. Pours a clear amber color with a small off-white head. Hasa sweetish malty spicy caramel aroma. Sweetish malty spicy caramel flavor with weak hints of dark fruit. Has a sweetish malty spicy caramel finish.
3.5 22 oz. bomber from secret santa. Thanks Man! Pours a dark red, near brown, with a small white head. Aroma of molasses, nutty malt, sweet toffee. Some mild fruit notes. Flavor is fruity with some caramel and estery yeast notes. Mild notes of smoke, toffee. Quite sweet, but the sweetness is off set by a nondescript bitterness. Somewhat thin bodied for the style. Finish is kind of boozy. Interesting take on the style, and really awesome to try.
3.1 bottle at pre-rbwg 3/4/11. yellowy for a scotch ale. the aroma is yeasty...sweaty. also, there are notes of toffee, wood, spice, florals and a nuttiness. alcohol bites at the nasal. flavors include toasted nuts, banana, brown sugar, spice, yeast and florals. caramelized banana aftertaste...not bad, just weird. medium to fullish bodied. spice and alcohol help to thin it but i still wouldn’t want to drink a lot of it. 6/3/6/3/13-
3.1 Bottle from phaleslu. Thanks peter. Notes belgian strong ale spice, a touch of rum cake, backed by rich caramel glazed peat moss. Decent attempt at a big spicey peat beer, good in small doses, but not really my thing. Potent candied sugar peat earth spice beer just doesn’t go down that easily for me.
2.4 20110613 Bomber from JR in Brielle. I thought I had rated this in it’s previous incarnation once I saw it was an alias, but, alas... Murky brown with small but lingering beige head of loose foam. Aroma is distinctly lagery without much Belgian yeast aside from some bubblegum and winterberry notes. Very sweet, almost cloyingly so, and with a lingering bubblegum finish. Mouthfeel is heavy, thick, and sweet. Okay take, but I’d much prefer something like McChouffe with better attenuation and more carbonation for sure.
3.5 I’m sure I rated this before and it got nuked, but here’s a re-rate: Aroma is white raisins, caramel, and dates. Chestnut brown, thin yellow head. Medium body, malty, lightly sweet but finishes sweeter with maraschino cherries.
3.7 pours brown, bright and amber when held up to light. slight dusty tan head, good carbonation. Aroma is banana/cherry funk and higher alcohols. Flavor is slight sweet, slight roast, slight funk. Light bodied, delicate, boozy. Good- more Belgian than scotch given the body and aroma. Without the Belgian aspect its a light-bodied and drinkable scotch ale for the abv. Good.
3.2 22oz bottle. Rating #115. Kind of murky looking, dark brown in color, almost cola like, but not as dark. Virtually no head and what was there was very thin and light tan. Sweet aroma, light fruitiness, grape maybe. A little boozy, sweet dark caramel and a little more light fruit, not too shabby. (1697)
3.5 Had at the end of a tasting, shared a bottle with The Giffer! .. . Pours a hazy gold tan .. good foam .. . lightly spiced, nuts, and maple .. . pretty easy to put down, i like the bird .. . You want my advice? Well, I’m not gonna give it to ya.
1.5 Bomber. Aggressive pour leaves a small rapidly dissipating head. Dark brown and looks flat (shades of Lost Abbey). Nose of prunes, figs, some earthy maltiness and a faint hint of Belgian yeast. Taste-well it’s a bit of a mess. Alcohol overwhelms most of the flavors in this beer-it drinks like a 14% beer. Some sweet stickiness, faint hint of Belgian yeast, a small slice of scotch ale. Medicinal ending. It is hard to believe that a quality brewery like Terrapin would let this get out the door. I will not come close to even finishing my 8 oz pour. Yuck.
0.7 650ml bottle. "An American Belgian Styled Scotch ale" Pretty convoluted if you ask me. Just call it an ale. It pours a dark, deep purpleish/red/brown with a foamy off-white head that leaves a few spots of lacing. The smell is perfumey and alcoholic with notes of nail polish remover and vodka. I can’t really get past the burning smell. It also smells pretty caramally. The flavor isn’t necessarily hot and boozy but I feel the alcohol accounts for the taste. It is fruity like wine, very vinous with a weird green vegetable taste. There is also a cloying sweetness that is too much. There is a hint of scotch ale in here, but only a hint. This is an epic failure, what a horrible beer.
3.4 Bottle shared during RBWG. Pour is mahogany with a khaki head. Aroma shows notes of caramel, toffee, plum, and cocoa powder. Flavor shows the same with additional notes of coffee, raisin, smoke, and cherry cough drops.
3.3 Dark brownish copper. Smells like grape, red wine, and some earthy aromas, as well. Surprisingly sweet - I get some grape jelly notes, some caramel, some red wine. Hint of coffee and prune in the finish. Not bad, but not as good as I was expecting.
2.2 Pours dark brown, no head, no matter how hard you pour. Aroma is almost, I hate to say, briney. There are sweet malt smells in there, but I get a soy saucey, kind of briney odor. Not good. Taste is good. It’s malty, spicey, creamy, and complex... but the mouthfeel ruins it. There’s so little carbonation it tastes like flat coke. Not good. This is a beer that could be very good, if it was just carbonated... a disappointment.
