3.0 Rating from 3-28-2010....Pours light to medium brown...small beige head....aroma is sugar and malt...very strong on the sugar...flavor is sugar also mixed with malt and spices....brown sugar and a prune/raisin taste...no complexity to it...yet also not offensive.....as it warms up, I get a little clove/banana action in the mouth
3.3 Bottle. Big orange peel and coriander dominating. Drinkable with a Belgian yeast note. Smooth but, semi- high carb. Pretty good but, I wouldn't search for this.
2.8 Very easy drinking for an 8% beer. Much lighter than most Belgian cane beers of similar ABV. Pours a dark amber color but isn’t super exciting to look at or smell. Overall, a good fall beer.
3.6 Reviewed from notes. The appearance was a dark cloudy brown colored body with no carbonation seen rising and no head (bar pour, no harm no foul to be honest). The smell was a sweet caramel up front with some light raisins and plums in the background. The taste was basically the same adding a bit of cherries in it. The palate was about a medium of sorts and had a decent amount of carbonation to it. No alcohol was felt which helped to make this fairly drinkable. Overall, I would say this was a pretty good Belgian Dark. I would have this again.
2.7 Bottle @ Castle Jackl. Russet red with a small white head. Big old estery Belgian nose. Loads of banana and autumn fruits. Caramel candies. Spiced brown bread. Toasty tobacco and pumpernickel flavors. Strong caramel, red apple skin. Slight cardboard. The very strong carbonation feels a bit intrusive. Medium body. Overall, not really my thing.
3.5 Bottle. Nice Belgium beer. I enjoyed this more than I thought I would. Nice and malty.
3.0 Pours cloudy dark copper aromas. As of grapefruit and tangerines. Tastes of caramel, spices, sweet malts, and citrus. Better than expected, though not great.
2.9 Pours a dark amber with slight frothy tan head and an aroma of caramel and slight hop spice. The finish is a bit weak with a light body and a slight sickly sweet aftertaste. Overall a decent beer.
2.0 Looks like a dark apple cider. Not carbonated enough for me. Lingers in the back of the tounge for a couple of minutes.
2.3 Carmel with spices I don't think I like it
3.4 Pours a hazy orange-amber. Has a beligan style wheat and yeast aroma will the some sweet malt and cinnamon. Taste is a nice mix of a Belgian style beer (wheat, yeaste, light malt), some fruit and Christmas style ale (cinnamon and spices). A malty aftertaste.
2.7 On tap at Joe Canals West Deptford. Appearance: The body is murky with an amber to brown hue accompanied by a short light tan head that barely lasts. Very ugly beer. Aroma: Doughy malts, very yeasty, with lots of banana Laffy Taffy. Decent strength and a bit sweet. Taste: Sweet banana Laffy Taffy from start to finish with peppery phenols by the end. Palate: Full-bodied and moderately carbonated. Overall: This is borderline cloying with far too much esters, this is a banana bomb. This is better than I remember, but I’m reminded why I’ve avoided it since I first tried it. I will pass in the future.
3.2 Dark amber pour with an off-white head. Nice malty nose with some yeast notes. Flavor has notes of caramel and some brown sugar with some nice yeast character. I thought this was a decent American expression of a Belgian tradition. Not too shabby! Thanks to Mikeq215 for the bottle!
1.8 I'm not real big on winter warmers.. But when it's of the Belgian persuasion, I feel it's worth giving its fair shake. This beer feels barely Belgian.. Maybe part of my issue was I was really hoping this would be a great beer. Oh well.. Still drinkable
3.2 12oz bottle from Crossroads Spirits. Pours a hazy amber color with a finger of foamy tan head. Aroma of caramel malt, lots of fruitiness, cinnamon, and bananas. Taste of fruity malts, clove, banana, cinnamon, and yeast.
3.0 12 oz bottle from Trader’s Joe. Pours dark amber with a tall, foamy, off-white head. Aroma is of bready malt, alcohol, brown sugar and dark fruit. Body is full and smooth. Taste is of bready malt, caramel, drying alcohol, earthy hops, brown sugar and cooked vegetables. Finish is long and dry. I will skip this brew next time.
3.5 Bottle. Pours cloudy dark ruby. Big off white head that dissipates to a little lacing. Nose is heavy on bananas and Belgian yeast. Taste follows suit but adds some candied fruit and a nice alcohol backbone. A little clove on the finish Good soft palate. Nice winter warmer.
2.8 Washington Commons, Brooklyn tap ($6): Pours a reddish color with a white head. Aroma is candy, caramel, and a bit of spice. Taste is kind of flat and uncomplex. It is slightly sweet, slightly spicy, but really has no depth past that. This is just not that good.
3.4 Had at new hope right after the brewery tour. Not a bad beer. Havn’t ever been too excited about winter warmers and this one is prob a little better than the others I had. Syrupy with some fruit. Slightly spicy with some yeast sediment.
3.3 Bottle shared by Heemer77 by way of jcwattsrugger! Thanks again guys! Pours a hazy orange with a small head and some lacing on the glass. The aroma is crazy lots of banana.... like banana runts. Plenty of sweet spices and some robust graininess. The flavor is spicy with a mild touch of astringency, the citrus and fruity character is nice, the banana is more controlled in the flavor than it is in the aroma. Some rye bread robust character is nice.
2.9 Bottle. Hazy deep amber color, scant head. Aroma of spiced caramel. Taste is sweetly spiced brown bread and fruitcake.
3.4 Bottle thanks to jcwattsrugger. The body was a deep reddish copper with a light khaki head on top. The nose is fairly boozy with some cloves and peanuts. There is a little bit of funk. The taste was caramel and lots of funky leather. There was also some banana peels. As I drank more I got some cinnamon type spice. Decent.
3.9 Bottle. Aroma of banana, cherry and alcohol. Amber body with thin dissipating head. Flavor begins sweet with notes of cherry, followed by clove, spice and yeast. Candied malt finish with a nice alcohol warming power. A tasty winter beer.
3.6 Pours cloudy brown. Smells of bread yeast and banana. Floral hops in teh aroma as well as booze. Lots on the tongue and palate. Medium carbonation. Pretty good.
3.1 Subtle smell of cinnamon, roast, hops, malt, and pine. Crisp light brown color. No head or lace. Flavor is hops, alcohol, pine, spices, and a slight sweetness of sugar at the very end.
3.2 Location: 12 oz bottle from Oak Tree, 12/16/12 Aroma: The nose has lots of banana, spice, Belgian yeast, candied sugar, and some wheat too Appearance: It pours a dark reddish-brown color with a thick foam of beige head and minimal lace Flavor: It is on the sweet side, with some yeast, spice, and mild hops too, but the sweetness dominates Palate: The body is medium, it feels quite a bit sticky, and leaves a sticky, lingering tingle on the mouth Overall Impression: This one is kind of a mixed bag. There are good components, but there are really bad components too. It’s hard too go too high on a beer that leaves such an odd and a little unpleasing feel on the mouth. Like I said, it is a mixed bag, but my score reflects my overall feel of the whole combination There’s some good, bad, and everything in between here.
3.2 Long Island, NY - 12 oz. bottle pours a reddish brown color with thin white head the quickly dissipates, no lacing. Aroma is of overripe fruit and a bit like licorice. Taste is initially sweet followed by winter spice. Palate is finished off with malty back bone and 8% ABV bite. A good brew that warms, Cheers!
2.3 Pours reddish brown, with no head. Aroma is banana and fig. Rather thin and bubbly, finishes with dry alcohol notes. Nothing special.
3.3 Pours a very hazy red-brown with a small tan head. Smells of chocolate, dough, earthy. Taste is bitter , mildly sour and sweet. A sharp bite, hint of dark chocolate, bit of spiciness.
2.5 2 year old with a bit of a gush from E. Pours unclear dark apple amber with a big gushing creamy beige head. The aroma brings soft sweet apple and toffee candy like notes. The flavor seems to have lost a bit with a few years, starting off sweet and malty and then bringing apple and acetyl flavors for sure.
