River Horse Hop Hazard Pale Ale

River Horse Hop Hazard Pale Ale

Brewing the perfect ale is truly a balancing act ... Hazardous work you might say. With Hop Hazard our challenge was to hand craft a malt rich base that could counterbalance a combustible five-hop blend and still leave your taste buds with enough room to enjoy a unique, dry-hopped finish.

2.7 Another hoppy beer with a lot of malt.
3.8 Bottled. Pours a hazy copper (it’s unfiltered) with a big pillowy creamy white head. Aroma is excellent balance of hops and malts. Caramel, some burnt sugar. Flavor is also an awesome blaance. Burnt sugar sweetness on the front, with a hoppy finish. Very nice pale ale, despite its name, it is not overly hoppy. And it’s fresh tasting, which I like.
4.3 really good hoppy beer with a nice bitter kick quite fruity an a beer to add to the must try list
3.3 Amber pour. Thin white head. Sweet aroma. Caramel dominates the body. Smooth, sweet finish.
3.1 Pours a cloudy orange brown with off-white head. Earthy hoppy aromas. Hoppy bitterness, resin, pine. An interesting pale ale, not amazing just interesting.
3.4 Bottle. Need label. Pours cloudy amber with off white head. nose/taste of earthy caramel, hops and pine/resin. Medium body.
3.1 Sampled at the brewery. Great beer hop flavors but well balanced with the malt flavors. Nice and hazey looking.
3.5 12 ounce bottle. Pours a hazy light brown color with a thick rocky beige head. Slight grainy toasted malt aroma. Rich toasted malt flavor. Notes of caramel, nuts and vanilla. Nice balance with spicy hops in finish. Overall, a decent full-bodied flavorful ale.
3.4 Six pack from NJ. Pours out a cloudy medium amber color. Nice frothy light tan head. Good malty aromas and flavors. Hop profile reminds me of some of my early homebrews. Flavors are a bit muddled, but overall this one drinks clean and enjoyable. Decent.
3.0 From notes: Poured hazy orange-amber with a 1-finger white head. Aroma of citrusy hops with a touch of caramel. Medium body, slightly oily with a brief, dry finish. Flavor of citrusy hops with nutty malt underneath.
2.7 This is about your middle of the road pale ale. I was a little disappointed after then pour was a beautiful dark amber with a nice thick off white head...but it went away quickly. Aroma of hops, taste of alcohol is a little too much for my liking. Probably won’t buy again as there are many better alternatives.
3.5 Received in a trade from jdb288. This is quite dark for the style being darker brown. Hazy with a nice creamy beige head. I smell gentle caramel malts and the first sip is that. They are thick and creamy in the mouth. The after taste of that sip is all hops. Citrus with mild bitterness. That was pretty much every sip. Malt flavors with citrus in the after taste. Unusual. This was tasty and a good way to start a weekend.
3.2 Pours to a merkey goldish color with thick off white head. Smells hoppy to almost tangy. Taste is bitter and a little watery, aftertaste lingers
3.1 Aroma of spice and pine and a litle caramel oily hazy gold appearence taste of citrus and pine slight alcohol aftertaste a decent beer
3.4 Oily and unfiltered, not pale but copper orange, good mix of hops, a bit malty. Some caramel and some liquor taste. Lasting alcoholic palate. A simple yet quality ale.
3.1 Pours a heavy golden yellow. Smells very hoppy for a beer that claims to be ’balanced with hops.’ It’s slightly more bitter than I expected. Tastes of hops, pine, and not much else. This one is ok.
3.2 12oz. Pours deep copper with a small soapy white head. Just a small ring of lace is left. Aromas of fresh zested lime/lemon, light pine, and toasted malts. The flavor is light with a touch of pine, citrus, and some caramel showing. Hefty malt body in this one and just a touch of something off. Decent just different.
3.2 August 2010. Bottle. Amber color with a white head. Middle of the road pale ale. Drinkable, but not very intersting.
3.5 Hazy color with off-white head. Citrus and hop aroma and taste. Also some malty taste. Very balanced, does not really live up to the name hoppy but a nice drinker.
2.8 Bottle. Not horrible, just incredibly bland and unoriginal. My first River Horse experience. Not impressed.
3.2 12oz bottle. Pours a hazy brownish orange color with a big off white head. Aroma of citrus hops, caramel malts, with a hint of pine. Taste of citrus and pine hops, and roasted caramel malts.
1.5 Light aroma, hop not pronounced. When I saw it was called hop hazard I expected more but when I read the back of bottle at home I was worried. Color was amber with a slight cloudiness. Head was huge and just about everlasting with nice lace. Poured from bottle in tulip glass at home. I found , like others a slight citrus aroma but it was grassy or woody in the mouth. I would throw it in the cooler for a hot day at the Jersey Shore, maybe.
2.7 not really a pale ale is it? caramel pour with long lacing. aroma of caramel and malts. nice med thick palate. taste was malt then hop then caramel; odd little beer slightly medicinal at end.
3.7 Hoppy beer but not too hoppy. This is a great beer though! I would drink this again and again if I could.
3.3 Thanks for the bottle, Cubes. Pours a hazy, copper body with an abundant, off-white head. Very fine and lasting. Tasty citrus and pine hop aroma with some biscuit malt and caramel. Flavor has more of the piney hops and a firm malt presence. Some apricot pokes through here and there. Medium body with an airy quality. Good bitterness, but very balanced. Nice beer!
3.5 Bottle:   Amberish, slight haze, large frothy off-white head, nice lacing.   Soft citrusy hops on the nose.   Seems pretty bright on the tongue.   Smidgen of grainess, but its light.   Seems pretty zesty, which is nice.   Seems like its a west coast style in that its hoppier than most.   Body and mouthfeel are moderate.   A little pithy on the backside.   Better than I expected.
3.4 Bottle. Pours copper/amber with a huge off-white head. Nose is a bit weak but some floral hops and sweet malt are evident. Taste is very malt-forward. Caramel and toffee notes with some light citrusy hops. Palate is excellent. Full and pillowy. Nose is the only thing holding this beer back from being really good.
3.2 Amber in pour. A slight citrusy hop aroma. A sweet flavor that has a hint of hops that disappears quickly. A strong malty finish.
2.4 Poured from a 12 ounce bottle. Big caramel character that overwhelmed the hops through the whole beer. No balance. One dimensional.
3.3 Amber with large head. Moderately hoppy with a fair amount of malt in the body. Slightly above average.
