River Horse Hopalotamus

River Horse Hopalotamus

The fabled Hop-a-lot-amus is a mythical creature. The heavy hop character of this Double IPA is as subtle as a "river horse" in your lap, but finishes like a hippo in a tutu. Enjoy! 93 IBUs

3.3 Pours a hazy deep orange color with a decent amount of head that dissipates quickly. To be expected from 8.5% ABV. Aroma smells of roasted fruits. And alcohol. Orange and tangerine. I also get a lot of sweetness from the malts. Taste up front I get a sweet malt character, and a great resiny hop flavor. Again, I get a strong roasted fruit like burn from the alcohol, they didn't hide it very well in this beer. Overall, it's a good DIPA. But I've had much better.
1.4 Darker pour. Beer fuckin sucks, tastes like rotting vegetables, smells like maple syrup. Messed up,
3.3 Cloudy, dark amber with decent lacing head. Floral aroma with hint of citrus and malts. Based on the aroma was expecting a bit of a malt bomb, but is actually quite balanced. Nice floral and subtle citrus notes. Slick mouthfeel. Slightly bitter finish. Big, full mouthfeel.
3.2 Murky caramel colored beer with a short lived off khaki head. Nose of alcohol, hop resin and some fruit. This is a big, chewy hop beer with lots of resin, some candied grapefruit rind, some pine, alcohol and caramel sweetness. A little rough with the alcohol.
3.0 Expecting more but the hop was a little less prominent than expected. Slightly low ABV for a double in my opinion. A little more mellow than I wanted. Comparable to a ST IPA.
3.5 From notes: Poured hazy orange-amber with a 2-finger bone-colored head. Light aroma of citrus mixed with some musty, bready yeast. Full body, mildly thick with a dry, earthy finish and a light astringency. Resiny hops flavor with some stone fruit, Earthy yeast and notes of citrus in the finish.
3.6 12 ounce thanks to Ed5388. Malty and hoppy. The overall taste, though, strikes me as a bit of light caramel and biscuit. Slight sweetness mixed with bitter. A bit unique.
4.7 Really good beer. Hoppy but not overwhelming. Very pleasant beer worth sipping.
3.3 Straight forward hop-centric 2XIPA, citrus, medium bitterness and sweet malts. Complex? Not really! 2XIPA that can get you buzzed? Absolutely!
3.2 Bottle. Great head. Cloudy dark copper. Lacing nice. Aroma is lacking. Head stays rocky. Bitterness is not crazy not underwhelming. I like it. Does have a little weirdness in the palate but still nice.
3.6 12oz bottle. Pours a cloudy deep amber color with two fingers of fluffy white head. Aroma of piny hops with citrus overtones, and some biscuit malt. The taste is pretty sweet up front, caramel maltiness, followed by lots of pine and citrus bitterness in the aftertaste.
3.4 Aroma is citrus, mild/medium sugar sweetness and a hint of caramel/toffee. The flavor is citrus, light grapefruit, mild hop resin, an undercurrent of sweetness and a very bitter finish. Not the best in the style but better than I was expecting.
4.3 A surprisingly very smooth IPA. Not too much of a bite with the after taste. Biggest complaint is that I currently don't have more in my fridge.
3.8 A very nice grapelike bitterness with floral notes. Reddish brown color with a white head.
3.7 Bottle courtesy of ken1. Hazy dark orange with a lasting off-white head. Aroma is sweet, malty, caramel and moderate hoppy - fruity. Flavor is quite sweet and rather bitter. Dry and rather bitter finish. 180513
3.7 Bottle from EC. Clear, coppy body with a huge, off-white head. Lasting with tons of lace. Really pretty. Dusty malt aroma with some cracker. Muddy citrus and some peach. Flavor has muddy hops. Caramel and raisin malt. Very restrained. Fullish body with appropriate carbonation. Balanced bitterness and a clean finish. Not what I expected from an IIPA, but the balance and restraint really work for me here.
3.3 Deep amber pour, hazy medium frothy off white head and decent sticky lacing ... aroma is malty as heck with a light citrusy hop .... taste is bitter rindy with some citrusy hops and a caramel malt backbone ... mouthfeel has a strong bitter hop and lightly oily in the mouthfeel ... slightly boozy ... strong hop bitter bite but just lacks the big citrusy hop flavor
2.6 Uploading old ratings that were missing comments. Need to re-rate. Hop profile was dead. Must have been a bad bottle.
3.6 Reddish brown in color. Medium hop smell slightly grassy or earthy. Light hoppy taste with sweet caramel finish. Surprisingly smooth and drinkable for a double IPA.
3.5 12 ounce bottle. Pours a reddish brown with a large off-white head. Aroma of pine and citrus. Taste is grapefruit, pine, grass, and malt. Very drinkable.
3.6 Pours amber with a thick white head. Smells of spruce and grapefruit. Taste is sweet and bitter, caramel, spruce, citrus.
4.2 Very interesting Imperial IPA; I can't say I've had an unfiltered one before. The pour is quite murky and deep orange, with an off-white head. Good, deep flavor that is unique in its heaviness -- the hop notes and bitterness are there, but not in their usual spritely form. Unusual overall, but nevertheless quite good. Having a hippo on the label is apropos for sure!
3.6 light sweetness, lightly bitter, full body, oily feel, average carbonation, brown, cloudy, minimal head, Not too strong on the hops; a little malty almost. Strong, but quite drinkable...watch out
3.5 On draft at the Fulton Grand on NYE 2012-2013. Dark red pour. Malty beer with earthy hops, yet very drinkable. Medium mouthfeel.
3.7 Location/Date:Bottle on December 23rd, 2012. Appearance: Pours a maroon/brown. Aroma: Aroma of grapefruit, pine. Taste: Medium bitterness, grapefruit, decent amount of malt. Palate:Medium body. Summary: Thanks Jay for the beer! Enjoyed this one, a pretty solid DIPA.
4.0 On draft at Good Beer. Rich, floral IIPA aroma. Full-flavored and muy hoppy, with good balance and lots of malt. Really good!
3.8 Poured from a 12 ounce bottle thanks to RamyG4. Pours a hazy copper color with a large froth of orangy, white foam. Decent lacing. The aroma has notes of oranges, grass, and other floral notes. The taste is earthily bitter and dry. Like a mouthfull of dirt. Sort of sweet toward the backend. Sticky mouthfeel. This is a nice, calm Double IPA. It would make for a good introductory beer.
3.7 Bottle from Mari’s. Pours hazy orange with an obscene amount of off-white head that leaves tons of sticky lacing. The aroma is pine forward but there is a little bit of citrus in the back end. Taste is bitter up front with a big grapefruit sweetness on the finish.. there is some lingering dryness from the hop bite. The palate is a little sticky for a DIPA but definitely drinkable.
3.3 Bottle. Not a terribly exciting of balanced DIPA. Citrus fruit and grass aroma. Pours a hazy dark orange almost copper. Pretty heavy mouth feel from both malt notes and alcohol. Lots of earthy hop character and a somewhat lasting bitter finish. Nothing remarkable.
2.9 bottle. amber with some sediment and small head. more bitter than hoppy. drinkable, but not much more than that. alcohol reasonably well masked.
