3.7 Pours a deep mahogany brown with a light brown head which disappears quickly......aroma is coffee, dark chocolate....taste is quite enjoyable, coffee, coffee ground bitterness, smooths to plum as the taste retreats. A lingering coffee remains. Just a touch more mouthfeel would sent it over the top.
4.1 Poured from bottle into a pint glass Appearance – The beer pours a deep brown, nearly black color with a two finger head of tan colored foam. The head has a decent level of retention, fading to leave only a trace of lace on the sides of the glass. Smell – The aroma of the brew is rather strong of an oatmeal and roasted malt smell, mixed with some vanilla and sweet crème sweetness. There are some other aromas of chocolate and a little bit of a burnt smell, leaving one with a nice roasty and sweet smell overall. Taste – The taste begins with a rather sweet and roasty flavor with a whole lot of vanilla and caramel sweetness matched by some light chocolate and a whole lot of roast. Right from the start there is also a very hearty oatmeal flavor which creates a fantastic base taste for the brew. As the taste advances a more chocolate and some crème come to the tongue, with these, in the end, leaving one with a nice oaty and slightly roasty and sweet flavor to linger on the on the tongue. Mouthfeel – The body of the beer is on the slightly thicker and chewier side with a carbonation level that is on the lower side. For the style and the nice sweet oatmeal and roasty tastes of the beer, the feel is fantastic, creating one nice and thick mouth coating feel that baths the tongue in all the great flavors of the brew. Overall- This is a quite nice oatmeal stout. Sweet, but not overly sweet. Dark, but not overly dark or roasty like. Mixed with a whole lot of sweet oatmeal, it makes for one delicious brew.
3.5 12 oz bottle This stout is from AOPD beers each month The stout poured a pitch black color with tan head and modest lacing. As the stout warmed up chocolate and toffee were detected on the nose. The taste was more complex with chocolate a touch of smoke and toffee. This is a nice stout. I pulled out of the frig an opened too quickly. . Let it warm to 45 degrees. The flavors and aroma will be worth it. The lactose sugar may produce more sweetness then necessary, The medium body stout had soft to average carbonation. A fuller body and stronger oat expression would take this beer to the next level, but is still highly enjoyable as it is.
3.0 From NOTES. A: sweet roasted malts, deeper more burnt malts, hints of chocolate, coffee, a hint of caramel as well. A: pours jet black with a one finger brown head. T: Big and roasty flavor with a bittersweet chocolate astringency. Certainly a sweetness here that complements the bitterness. P; Almost thin bodied with medium carbonation. It’s creamy, but I wish it had some more body. O: A nice stout that doesn’t quite have the lactose and sweetness that others have but, as a sweet stout, it’s very nice.
3.5 12 oz bottle. This is not your traditional milk stout. It’s not very sweet, it has a relatively rich flavor, and there’s more chocolate and coffee. Drinks like a higher gravity beer.
3.8 Pours black with tan head. Aroma is chocolate, roasted malt, and coffee. Flavor starts sweet lactose, dark chocolate, coffee, vanilla, and roasted malt. Acidic towards the middle. Bitter Coffee and unsweetened cocoa finish.
3.6 Tap. Dark almost black pour with a mocha head. Oatmeal, chocolate milk, coffee. Medium body. Smooth milky and oaty body with good carbonation. Nice!
3.4 Spuyten duyvil, brooklyn cask: pours black with a small loose cask head. Aroma is chocolate, mint, and maybe anise. Taste and aroma are like of an old school British porter. Interesting and a little different. Better than expected.
3.6 Pours jet black with a thick mocha head. Aroma of chocolate, coffee, lactose. Taste is smooth, sweet milk chocolate, roast with a hint of coffee. Very tasty.
3.9 Tasty beer from the local brewery, nice dark color and brown head, not so bitter but can still taste th coffee on it , candy drink this all day
3.6 12 ounce bottle. Thanks Eugene! Pours almost black with a small tan head. Aroma of malt, chocolate, and coffee. Taste is roasted malt, sweet chocolate, coffee, and lactose. Somewhat bitter finish. Good.
3.8 Pours pitch black with a one finger tan head with pretty nice lacing. Aroma is of roasted malts, coffee, bakers coco, molasses, sweet malts, and some vanilla. Taste is about the same as the aroma and is of roasted malts, milk and dark coco, coffee, sweet malts, mint, and vanilla. Has a medium body with a semi creamy mouthfeel and a mostly sweet, medium finish. Overall, a pretty nice oatmeal stout.
3.5 Rating from 3-28-2010....lets just say its black....dark brown sugar colored head....super creamy body....nice roasted malt/milky chocolate aroma....a little coffee taste and aroma...quite the tasty milk/sweet stout!
1.7 Deep, dark brown but bald. Even a little swirl ca't ressurect the head. Tastes like chocolate milk, but with no carbonation. A little heat from the alcohol on the back end. A milk should be cooling. The flatnes and alcohol take away from the delicious chocolate taste.
3.9 Bottled. Pours black w/ a tan head. Aroma is malty with lots of rich milk chocolate. Flavor is sweet, similar to left hand milk stout, but has a slight hint of coffee bitterness at the end. Definitely more effervescent than I would necessarily like. I think this w/ nitro would be very nice. Overall, very nice.
3.4 Bottle from my sister. This was poured into a pint glass. The appearance was a dark brown close to black color with a one finger white to off white foamy head that dissipated within about a minute. Gentle sporadic lacing sticks around the sides of the glass. The smell had a soft chocolate sweetness with a gentle rolling warmth of booze underneath, huh, hmmm...must be really fresh at 6.7%. Light grainy to thick dark fruitiness trying to strike a certain strength in this one. The taste took the previously mentioned flavors and added a good sweet booziness. On the palate, this one sat fairly light for the most part and showed a decent sessionability about it. The carbonation was there but not overbearing. Overall, good beer, now where are my oatmeal raisin cookies to go with this? (wink). I’d have it again.
3.6 Bottle from a trade with pineypower. Pours dark brown color with tan head. Aromas of roasted malts and chocolate. Sweet milk chocolate and roasted malt flavors. Medium body with moderate carbonation and a creamy mouthfeel. Thanks Dean.
3.2 Draft at Eulogy. Black pour. Soft beige foam on top that dies to a lasting ring. Feels quite thin to start with (for an oatmeal stout.) Grows thicker as it warms. Some coffee chocolate cookies. Soft milky vanilla cream. Reddish brown fruit. Figs. Molasses. Some ascetic notes in the nose. Darkly sweet but a nice sudden dry spicy finish. Missing complex stout flavors, but otherwise not so bad.
3.2 12 oz. bottle from trade with Crajun. Pours black as night with a thin tan head . Aroma of roast malt and sweet lactose. Thick and creamy on the palate. Flavor of roasty oats, some burnt malt and lots of sweet sugar with an abrupt bitter finish.
3.1 Undated bottle, from the 2013 release though. Appearance: The pour is pitch black and the body is equally as so. A tall, neat and dense brown head rises from the black body and sticks around for a bit for a nice presentation. Aroma: The aroma is mild with some carbonic acid. Creamer is noticed along with hints of roast and bittersweet chocolate. The aroma is a bit muted and blurred. Taste: This tastes better than it smells. I get a solid malt base of bittersweet chocolate with roast becoming prominent by the finish. Lactose sweetness runs through, but there’s a mild astringency throughout as well. The finish lingers of a roasty bitterness. Palate: Nearly full-bodied, a bit light. Carbonation is a bit too present. Overall: I don’t find myself looking to buy this again, especially when Left Hand does it cheaper and better. Why is this a $12 six pack to begin with? It’s only traveled a few hours and it’s no more expensive to brew than their other beers which are more reasonably priced. I don’t get it.
3.4 Bottle, cheers to eelbasher! The pour’s deep brown with a tight tan head. The nose is sweet coffee and caramel ice cream. Light cinnamon heat, toasted nuts. Melted coffee ice cream flavors. Hints of raisins. Dark chocolate. Light body, effervescent carbonation. Tasty stuff.
3.1 Pretty good oatmeal stout from a local swap! Poured a medium almond brown that had hints of oatmeal with a back taste of milk.
3.4 Pours tar black with no head. Aroma of roasted malt, lactose, oats, and mocha. Nice balance of oat, lactose, roasted malt, and chocolate. Creamy body. Nice beer.
2.5 DATE TASTED: February 8, 2014... GLASSWARE: Samuel Smith pint...OCCASION: the reading of A Storm of Swords begins... APPEARANCE: jet black body; unenthused thin brown head; tracings are basically sporadic bubbles... AROMA: some peat and smoke, but predominantly a strange combination: lactic, doughy malts and vanilla sugars argue with strikingly astringent turpentine chemicals--a challenge to take in... PALATE: medium-bodied, slightly dry; rather flat up front, with a beefy after breath ...TASTE: milky, yet the alcohol seems to impede a smoother flavor; some rum elements mingle with a plasticine undertone... OVERALL: This seems a forced attempt at steeping ABV at the cost of taste and experience; River Horse does Jersey proud with some offerings, but this brew is negatively aggressive--upon completing this review, I drank a second and only found the beer more troublesome to place in a positive light....
3.7 Recd from ed5388 as part of local swaps 5.2. Limited experience with this style but I have several I will try in next few weeks. Pleasantly surprised. Aroma is subdued but has roast and chocolate dark pour taste is a combo of milk stout and oat stout. Had milk chocolate and roast plus the smooth oats. Slight odd taste at end of sip lactic? Thx Ed. Good start to my tests of this style
3.6 (bottle) Pours a black complexion with minimal tan head. The aroma is well roasted malts with some coffee beans. The flavor is a nice hybrid between the oatmeal and milk stout styles as both are apparent. Smooth palate. Well done by brewer.
3.3 Pours almost black, short lived mocha head. Aroma of sweet malt, touch of charred oak. The taste is both sweet and roasty, not much going on, a little milk chocolate and coffee hints. The palate is a little thin with medium carb but, smooth and drinkable. Pretty nice milk stout but missing something.
3.4 Oat, oak, nut, malt. Dark brown color. Taste is roasted hop, nut, coffee, kinda bland. Shortened duration but still a solid sweet stout.
3.5 Bottle. Pours muddy brown with slight head. Aroma is chocolate and yeast. Taste is creamy chocolate milk with brown sugar, toffee, and malted milk balls. Nice velvety mouthfeel with medium body, slight carbonation. Pleasing.
4.5 On tap. Smooth and creamy feel with great taste.
