3.6 Frothy off white head stayed on a Coca-Cola coloured still body. Malt & caramel aroma. Medium to full bodied, soft with a tingle on the back. Malt, caramel, raisin, light pepper, liquorice & spicy tastes. Excellent but better on cask!
3.6 Thursday, September 10, 2020. Bottle, 33cL. 8.5%. Gift from my dad ! Merci :) Home. A sparkling dark brown beer with a medium beige foamy head ; medium retention ; good lacing. Roast, light caramel, light licorice, light alcohol, prune. Medium round sweet, medium dry warming, light bitter. Good body, smooth texture, average to soft gaseous, roasty light caramel sweet finish Overall, good !
Redoutablement efficace !!!
3.5 Bottle as gift. Darkest brown with a creamy tan head. Black treacle and caramel. Cola. Earthy hop. Touch of pine freshness. Full body, soft carbonation and a dry booze finish. Big malty dark beer.
3.6 Bottle from Beers Of Europe. Appearance - black with red chinks. Off white head. Nose - glace cherry, molasses and smoke. Taste - brown sugar, molasses, menthol and cherry lozenge. Palate - medium bodied. Dry, lightly burnt finish. Overall - unexpected cherry lozenge thing. Good though.
3.5 Historical tick which I am adding as a rate so that I can see the impact it has on my stats. 500 Beers To Try Before You Die.
3.9 Bottle from Sainsbury's. Pours mid-dark brown with a nice looking beige head. Aroma is dried fruit, toffee, boozy fruit cake, sweet malt. Medium sweetness, light bitterness. Medium body, slick texture, soft carbonation. Pretty decent.
4.0 Fruitée et chocolatée. Plutôt légère en alcool. Ronde et agréable en bouche
4.0 330ml bottle brewed in England at 8.5%. Good-sized, OK-duration head. Ultra-dark purple colour, seeming black. Fruity aroma, black cherry, raisin, some smoky malt. Low carbonation. Delightfully, surprisingly fruity. Black cherry, sweet raisin, even some black grape in there, then the chocolate malt kicks in nicely, and develops into caramel for a lengthy aftertaste. The standard-bearer for Old Ales, and for good reason. Well worth sampling. Dangerously light drinking for the ABV!
1.0 Overbearing amounts of acetaldehyde in my bottle (green apples), minor notes of sherry, caramel, walnuts. Unfortunately this one was just one major flaw turned into beer. Undrinkable.
3.0 Birra scura, alla luce riflessi rossi scuro, limpida. Schiuma color nocciola. Corposa, sapore intenso, affumicato, spicca l’amaro soprattutto sul finale. Profumo di torta al cioccolato.
3.3 Pours a dark brown colour with a beige coloured head and a thin white head Notes of roasted coffee and roasted toffee caramel and vanilla Bottle version
3.5 Bottle from the rotbox. Circa 2010 BBE Jun 2011. Amostly clear cola brown coloured pour with a decent loose beige head or the age. Aroma is toffee, waxed paper, mint, fruit fruit cake, grape, Flavour is composed of semi sweet, fruit and nut, some musty toffee, little mint, layered fruit cake, musty roast, hint of ash. Palate is semi sweet, mellow carbonation, oily. Held up pretty well.
2.9 330 ml bottle. Pours clear dark brown with medium head. A: caramely T: medium body, lower carbonation, strong alcoholy, sweet malty, roasty tones, bitter finish
3.9 330ml (8.5%) at home on 8 Apr 2020, source unreported (bbe Feb 2020): fruity, toffee, ethanol aroma, opaque very dark chestnut brown, lasting bubbly beige head, ring of fine lacing, raisins, toffee, ethanol flavour, viscous, sweet, minimal alcohol burn.
3.7 Mørk let syrlig og let chokolade - nem at drik
3.9 Nice !
3.4 Aroma : Strong rich sweet caramel maltiness, dark sweet soft red fruits. Taste : As aroma. Extremely malty, very lightly sweet with a slight bitter astringency & a juicy fruity aftertaste. Whilst you can feel the alcohol there is no 'burn' that often goes with a beer of this ABV. Pretty good.
4.3 Smooth deep caramel beginning. Plums, dark caramel with intense sticky rich dried fruits - dates, plums, red cherries and christmas-pudding-dough. Extremely complex and viscous, quite dry, caramelly and extreme deep. Fantastic.
3.9 Pours dark brown / black with a coffee coloured head. Faint aroma - malt and currants. In taste, dried fruits, Demerara, malt, burnt toffee, some spice, sweetness - date syrup. You can taste the strength of this ale (8.5%). An old fashioned, character filled beer. I love the bottle this comes in - squat, Victorian style embossed glass, with a grumpy Tom cat’s face glaring from the label.
3.3 Fles gedeelt door KoenvD, geprobeerd met Roelzie1986. Het is donkerbruin bier met weinig schuim. Het heeft een moutige wat dropachtige geur. De smaak is moutig, gebrand en wat zoethout achtig.
3.4 Dark brown with an off white head. Bready aroma with a hint of caramel. Taste is sweetish, alcohol to the fore, and no trace of bitterness. Medium carbonation.
4.3 Buen olor, cuerpo, ligero sabor a chocolate, al final deja un sabor a vino tinto.
3.6 # 596; 1/2017. Moje první setkání s old alem - a vůbec mi to nezaujalo. Nepříjemná železitá vůně. Chuť plná, sladší, pražená, ovocná, lékořicová. Edit 4/2020. Strong plum aroma, honey, iron, caramel. Dark red, clear body, tan, thin head. Malts, molasses, sweet, chocolate, dried fruits, alcohol warmth. Very good, porter wine like beer. 0,33 l, bottle, supermarket, Pilsen (Bohemia, CZ).
3.3 Off-white head. A dark beer with deep red reflexes. The aroma consists of bread, caramel, melanoidins, and other bock-like stuff. A bit of acidity. Otherwise, it's fairly sweet with almost no bitterness. Full body, medium carbonation. Sticky.
3.7 Bottle thanks to @minutemat and European Local Swap 3/2019. Pours dark brown with tan head. Aroma has nutty malt, plum and alcohol. Taste is sweetish with dried fruit, nutty flavors and yeasty bitterness. Really nice ale!
3.2 330ml bottle in 2012. Dark brown with a thin beige head. Aroma of booze soaked fruit, dates, cinnamon, nutmeg and prunes. Alcohol is quite prominent and the flavour rather sweet, like those British Barley Wine’s of old. The linger is dried fruit and rum.
3.1 Nice and dark, alcohol on the nose. Instant bitterness and flavours of the heavily roasted grains. I’d definitely have another, but at 8.5% ABV maybe not tonight!
3.9 Pours a dark brown colour with thin white head. Aroma is malt spice clove cinnamon . Taste is malty sweetish spicy bit bitterness. Overall a very nice old ale.
3.5 Tall, heavy, beige head. Dark, almost black, colour. Opaque. Aroma of roasted malts, caramels. Taste is heavy too, licorice - coffee. It's not bad. Expected bit more, but it's bit older bottle too.
