Chocolate Tom is a deliciously indulgent addition to the Old Tom range, with a recipe developed by Robinsons and the renowned chocolatier Simon Dunn.

With a distinctive ’natural’ milky sweet chocolate palate balanced by underlying hop and roasted malt characters, Chocolate Tom is a superior, rich and warming speciality beer with a dark mahogany colour.

3.2 Pours a dark amber with a medium head. Aroma is of malts, caramel and chocolate. Taste is malts, chocolate. Slighty sweet and sour. Slightly sour finish
3.6 Interesting scent of a dusty Red Velvet cake sprinkled with a pinch of unsweetened baking cocoa. Beautiful ruby hues with a foamy but short-lived beige head. The chocolate jumps out at you right away but is quickly followed by the layers of malts fading slowly to a mild bitter finish, has a slight warming follow. Quite nice.
3.8 Bottle on the P&O Oceans near Greece. Don’t usually go for novelty beers bit this one is worth a try. Pours dark brown with a good head which lasts. Aroma is strongly chocolate and hazelnut with some vanilla. The taste is like a decent hoppy IPA with the chocolate layered on top rather than competing with the hops. Good malty backbone to carry the lot. Hop bitterness is prominent and lingering. Well balanced. Quite an enjoyable after dinner ale. Good one for the style.
3.4 Bottle from beergium.com. Pours brown. Nose is chocolate, cocoa, orange peel, bloodorange, toffee. Taste is phenolic, chocolate, wood, kind of a weird hoppy aftertaste. Finish is bitter chocolate. Good, but not as good as the old Suffolk. I need to try the non chocolate version too.
3.4 Bottle pours brown with a off white head. Aroma of chocolate and some vanilla. Taste is chocolate.
3.3 Rating #1000. Mahagoni with no head. Aroma is phenols, clove, spices, chocolate, green apple, oak. Taste is sparkly spicy sourness with some phenolic sweetness and lots of alcoholic bitterness. Roast and cocoa in the dry finish. Full bubbled mouthfeel. Not easy to drink. Had the non chocolate version and thought it was amazing, so I thought this would make a good 1000. Didn’t enjoy as much as expected, though.
2.6 Potpuno bistro pivo. Bogatijom aromom. Kao da sam posjetio fabriku jeftine čokolade.
3.3 33cl bottle from Tesco. Pours deep brown with rich off-white head. Aroma strong in alcohol with sweet chocolate and vanilla, also wine. Sticky texture with quite a lot of fizz.
3.1 Enjoyed: Poured from a bottle into a trapist glass. Appearance: Deep red colour, with small brownish head. Aroma: Chocolate liqueur, alcocol. Palate: Medium body; light carbonation. Taste: Chocolate, but also slightly sour on tongue; sweet/bitter aftertaste. Overall impression: Quite ok but though I’m not a fan of sweet, I expected more.
3.0 Bottled. Pours brown colour with long lasting off-white head. Roasted malts, dried fruits and strong chocolate notes in aroma. In taste it’s pleasant chocolate first but then some strange acerbic notes appear that ruin the finish. Softly carbonated, light bodied.
3.7 2009 vintage - Chocolate Tom. Bottle from Tucker’s Maltings, Newton Abbot, Devon. Into a tulip at cellar temperature. Muddy brown with a big ol’ yeast pack that settles to the base of the glass. Head is a good inch of tight off-white foam but fades rapidly. It’s mellowed on the nose (tried this fresh at the maltings in 2010). Hints of madeira and roasted walnut, rich timber and vanilla, and just a breath of milk chocolate. Chocolate icecream palate with ample savoury fruit mince not picked up in the nose. Woody and nutty in the finish with a lightly acidic tang and astringency that’s developed. Body is smooth, yet light and oddly sits quite heavy in the finish. The carbonation very soft to almost still. A hint of dark chocolate bitterness in the very depths. Alcohol is all but non-existent. Bready and doughy from the yeast but otherwise drinking deliciously. A pleasing brew at this age. By memory the 2010 bottle was a little one-dimensional towards chocolate. Lovely with a bit of age!
3.2 Clear deep chestnut brown with medium tan foam. Aromas of chocolate, sweet cocoa, truffles and tooffe notes. Palate, light body with lightly oily but thinish texture leaving smoky finish. Taste is sweet-ish with notes of very tosted brown bread, charcoal and cocoa. Overall, drinkable but for me it reminds too much of burned toast and I am not a fan of burned toast.
3.4 Dark amber colour, with no head. Aroma is the same as taste, chocolate and some whiskey. Very pleasant aroma and taste. Very low bitter aftertaste. Overall really great easy drinking beer.
4.2 Served in a tulip from a 330ml bottle. Pours dark brown clear amber with a medium beige head. Aroma is vinous and slightly sour, prunes, chocolate and hint of molasses. Taste is caramel, grass and chocolate notes. Thin to medium body with lively carbonation. Pleasant and refreshing, very quaffable without being overwhelming on the sweet side. Lovely!
3.0 Slight chocolate aroma with little head and no lacing. Dark amber hue. Taste is pleasant bitterness with slight chocolate coming through ring at the end. Slight fizzyness on tongue and roof of mouth. Pleasant beer but not remarkable.
3.2 Bottle, 0.33l. Clear dark brown color with medium creamy tan-like head and sparkling appearance. Aroma of chocolate, roasted malt, caramel and vanilla. Taste starts sour bready and grassy, follows by mild sweet roasted malt and chocolate, even some medicinal notes present, mouthfeel is dry, while finish is medium bitter. Light to medium body, slick texture and average carbonation in palate. I would prefer more creamy and less grassy brew, but that’s old ale...
4.0 Clear dark amber brown colour with a creamy white head. Taste of chocolate in cocoa. Very drinkable with sweet in lightly bitter aftertaste.
3.6 Nice aromatic beer with a full roasty taste and hints of dark chocolate yet somewhat fuity A bitter sweet aftertaste, in my case i could sense a plum aroma. Foam was thick and stayed in the glass long after drinking, although there wasn’t much of it. Color was a nice mahogany as stated on their site. I enjoyed it more than the "commercialy popular" dark ales.
3.7 330ml bottle. Clear dark amber brown colour with a creamy smooth off-white head, good retention. Aroma: light roasted malt, chocolate, caramel. Taste: chocolate, malt, liquorice, vanilla, molasses. Quite sweet overall with a slight bitterness in the finish, slight taste of alcohol too. Soft carbonation, smooth oily mouthfeel. Pretty nice brew.
3.5 Chocolate Tom is an easygoing dessert beer for a weeknight. At 6%, this Old Tom variant is lighter than many Old Ales currently available. Brown pour with a fluffy head. Milky, creamy chocolate and molasses aromas. Flavor is consistent with the smell: chocolate, vanilla, and molasses. A medium-bodied beer that’s big on sweet, light on heat.
3.8 Bottles from York Beer & Wine and B&M, Team Valley, Gateshead. Amber-brown in colour with milk chocolate and red fruity flavours followed by caramel, vanilla and more sweet chocolate on the finish. Very good.
3.9 Bottle. A- Molasses, milk chocolate, subtle bourbon. A- Brown color, murky liquid, tan head. T- Molasses, chocolate, subtle sweetness, mild alcohol. P- Medium body, average texture, average carbonation, balanced finish. O- At first I thought I bought the regular Old Tom and was a bit disappointed when I found out it was the Chocolate version. As soon as I got a smell, the disappointment went away. This smelled like a Russell Stovers chocolate covered molasses bite and the taste is about the same. The bottle seemed bigger than it was too. Overall, I was surprisingly pleased with this one.
Kicsit sok a szénsav. Utóíze egy butított ESB-re hasonlít, némi savanyúval. Nem igazán jött be, nem tudom miért.
2.2 Aroma: cocoa, artificial chocolate. Appearance: clear deep brown color and beige head. Taste: alcohol, cocoa, roasted notes, quite dry, empty taste. Palate: medium body and medium carbonation, cocoa. Overall: Really mediocre stuff.
3.6 Clear, dark ruby pour with small and short lasting, slightly off-white head. Smell is malty with a hint of chocolate. Medium body with oily texture and soft carbonation. Mostly bitter taste with subtle sweet notes to it. Aroma of chocolate, roasted malts, coffe grains, toffee and nuts. Nicely balanced, maybe a bit too watery, needs more punch to it. Overall, nice and enjoyable.
3.0 Pours a hazy brown/amber color. Aroma is very sweet. Apple peels, malts, and a little chocolate are there. Sweeter, oil slick and slight carbonation palate. Flavor is of malts, vanilla, oak, and cocoa. Leaves a sweeter, slightly bitter malt finish.
