Robinsons Old Tom With Ginger / Ginger Tom (Bottle)

Bottle: Pasteurised;

Originally labelled as Ginger Tom. Label was changed to read Old Tom With Ginger circa 2011.

Ginger Tom is a lively breed indeed, a subtle snap of ginger creates lovely purring warmth for those cold winter nights, or a refreshing summer beverage when served over ice.

Specially brewed using an infusion of Chinese bruised ginger root and botanical extracts, this warming speciality ale has a pronounced ginger and spiced herb palate complemented by a sweet roasted malt dryness and wonderful ginger after burn.

Ginger Tom is a richly flavoured dark oak coloured ale with distinctive aromas of peppery spice and sweet ginger.

1.5 Colaa? Holinen limsa.
3.8 Appearance- Very deep amber colour with medium cream foam. Aromas- Sweet with notes of ginger, caramel, roasted malts and fruits with touch of cinnamon and spice. Palate- Medium to full body with smooth texture leaving lightly spicy ginger finish. Taste- Sweet and spicy of ginger, cinnamon, big red chewing gum, anise and different herbs and spices. Overall- Wow, did not expect that, nice solid brew with complex and rich spice and heb mix with decent texture and aromas. Nice!
Aroma a caramelo y jengibre.
3.6 I love ginger and spiced ginger in drinks will always be a favourite so I liked this. Aromas of sweet ginger and roasted malts stick out, and the ginger flavour doesn't simply mask the others with roasted malts and caramel giving it a richer blended taste that was very satisfying.
2.2 27-03-18 // shared with the local crew, thanks! Murky brown. Strong ginger sweet nose. Heavy sweet malty. Ginger and lemon. Weird.
3.0 6% alk.
3.3 Caramel, toffee and ginger aroma, slightly herbal with noticeable alcohol. Clear deep ruby to brown color with small creamy off-white head. Sweet, ginger, some tobacco, caramel, herbal aftertaste. Slightly artificial sweet root beer effect. Medium body, soft carbonation, bit oily. //bottle
3.0 Bottle, 330 ml, courtesy of and shared with Max. Pours brown with medium yellowish head. Malty, spicy, ginger, caramel, sweet. Medium bodied. I'm not a big fan of ginger, but this is decent.
3.0 Very black and basically no head. Actually it looks like Cola. Strong ginger aroma. Taste is very sweet. It’s more like lemonade that beer, but interesting.
4.0 Cola brown colour, beige top medium sized. Medicinal, deeply herbal, smooth and oily. Spicy and nice for winter time. Very English!
3.3 Butelka 330ml. pite w domu.
4.1 Dark brown color, small head. Aroma very strong ginger, roasted malt, caramel. Taste sweet coffee, chocolate, dried fruit, ginger. I like it.
3.1 Pours a dark ruby colour, with a thin head. Very strong ginger aroma, sweet, caramel. Taste is sweet, the ginger note is very prominent. Aftertaste is long and sweet. Nice beer, but too sweet for my taste
3.5 Bottle at Peter Gift with Thorlund and Krabbe. Dark brown ale. Aroma: lots of ginger, sweet aroma, sugar, some roasted malts. Taste: strong sweet ginger taste, roasted malts, suger. I like the balance in this beer, nice one.
3.3 F: big, tan, good retention. C: dark brown, clear. A: malty, a lot of ginger spicy, orange peels. T: malty, herbal, ginger, caramel sweet, not bad but may be too sweet, medium to full body, medium carbonation, long lasting ginger aftertaste, enjoyed, 33cl bottle as from Auchan Market in Luxembourg.
2.9 Enjoyed: Poured from a bottle into some shaker glass. Appearance: Dark ruby/brown colour, with floating bits and medium creamy head. Aroma: Ginger, malt, hint of caramel and hops... Palate: Light watery body; gentle carbonation. Taste: Sweet, ginger and some other spices, citrus-like and pepper bitter and hot aftertaste. Overall impression: Interesting, might be enjoyable; I’m not into ginger but this is good enough. Reminds of peppery radler.
3.9 Dark brown/deep ruby color with large, beige foamy head. Medium to full body, soft carbonation, creamy lacing. Aroma of spicy ginger, hops, malts, toffee, spices. Taste is very gingery and moderately sweet, with accompanied aromas of dark fruits, dark bread, yeast, syrup, soda pear and some vanilla, licorice and alcohol. Unique and enjoyable.
3.3 Bottle. Dark Reddish-Brown in colour. Very fruity (dark fruits) and Spicy (ginger & herbs). Malty (roast malts, caramel, toffee). Sweet fruity spicy throughout. Spicy ginger dominates. Very drinkable. (2008)
2.8 Bottled. Dark mahogany colour with quickly disappearing head. I dont get much out of the aroma, only the ginger. In taste first comes the sweet ginger, followed by some bitterish notes. Sweet finish, light body and soft carbonation. It’s like ginger was added to a bad ale to hide its flaws, but the original version is not a bad ale, so I dont really see the point.
4.1 2009 vintage - Ginger Tom. Bottle from Tucker’s Maltings, Newton Abbot, Devon 2010. At cellar temperature and into a snifter. Misted, cola brown with ruby in the shallows and a few solid proteins that sink rapidly to the base. . Head holds quite proud; a beige film of tight foam. Medicinal, deeply herbal and spicy nose with prominent earthy ginger root still showing. Topsoil, stewed rhubarb and plum, twiggy bark, mace and nutmeg. First sip brought along a lot of liquorice and aniseed in all its earthly forms. Mild heat in the earthy and deeply malty finish from the residual ginger. No oxidation but good age and amalgamation of nuances. Green peppercorn, dark plum and roasted cacao root with a blend of Deutsche aperitif (indefinable) flavours that tickle the olfactories and reside long on the palate. Body has a treacly viscosity but doesn’t seem heavy in the swallow. Carbonation has waned to leave it smooth to oily. I’ll go against the grain on this one. This has aged dynamically after a good seven years in the cellar. Pasteurised or no, it was great drinking, and reminiscent of the best of British ales that I miss. Loved this one..., as a vintage!! (33cL, BBE 08/12)
1.8 330ml bottle. Small brownish head. Clear black colour. Very sparkly. Soft drink aroma. Strange taste. Don’t like it.
3.2 Bottle 0,33L. Dark mahogany red color with average big, frothy, light brown head. Aroma of bubblegum, orange, pear, pepper, ginger. Taste starts light sweet, slightly peppery (but not overhelming), finish is light sweet, too. Taste of ginger is a bit stronger at the aftertaste, but still acceptable for me. Light body, watery texture, soft carbonation. I’m not a fan of ginger beers, but this one is ok for me.
3.1 Te original old Tom is one of my favourite beers, but this lacked everything that made it great. Thinner, less malty and complex and the ginger stands out too much (wheras the original blended all the flavours perfectly). No idea what made them make this 6% instead of 8.5%, but maybe ginger AND 8.5% ABV was too much. A decent beer just but nowhere near anything as good as the original
3.3 Bottle at home in London - picked up at the massive Tesco near Hackney Central, I think. This beer has a BBE of April 2013, so it definitely is getting long of tooth; tonight is the night, then. Pours clear amber with a creamy, khaki head - you can’t fault the appearance. Lots of spicy ginger in the aroma, along with some gloopy, ripe berries and hints of toffee. Medium to heavy sweet flavour, thick and chewy, with lots of ripe berries, creamy toffee, dense slices of holiday fruitcake. Medium to full bodied, viscous, with velvety texture and creamy carbonation. Sticky on the finish, certainly sweet, with lots more ripe berries, fruitcake, moderate ginger spice, some orange peel. Well, it is certainly an interesting beer. The sweetness prevents it from being very drinkable, but it is definitely a novelty.
3.0 Bottle. Dark amber/brown colour, stable head. Aroma is sweet, caramel, lemon, ginger is not very forward. Taste is more of ginger, caramel, lemon, sweet and bitter. A bit too sweet for me. Overall not bad.
3.0 33cl bottle. Clear dark amber with a thin tan head. Ginger, bread and caramel in the aroma. Average carbonation and medium body. Taste is sweet with ginger and caramel notes. Overall, a warming beer.
2.8 Barva tmavá, vůně příjemná sladká zázvorová a chlebová. Chuť: sladký karamelový nástup, který přechází v zázvorovou ostrost. Dlouhý sladký bylinkový dozvuk.
2.1 Pours a hazy dark brown color, topped with a big and medium lasting tan head. Mild malty aroma with little roastiness. Moderate herbal ginger aroma. Mildly sweet start, heavy on the herbal ginger, bittery with a spicy finish. Nope, not my type.
