Rogue Brewer

Rogue Brewer

Ten years ago, John Maier introduced to the world his best friend and and beloved dog, Brewer. It was also the year he created this doppel winter ale. An intense, hoppy brew that will warm even the frostiest of toes. Third in the "Anniversary" series. ABV may vary between 7.5-9.0%

3.6 Bottled. Nice brown pour with off tan head. Nice mild pine, and malt aroma. A tart fruit taste witha bitter hop finish. Pretty damn good.
3.5 This capped and caged ceramic bottled brew from a bottle shop poured a large sized head of foamy with a frothy top light brown colored bubbles that were and left behind a hazy typically carbonated brown colored body and a thick foamy lacing. The aroma was malty and mild spice. . The flavor contained notes of hops mild spice and brown malt. A decent one that I would consider buying again.
4.0 Bottle. Heavy malt aromas of roasted, caramel and milk chocolate, moderate hop notes of herb and resin, light dough and leather for yeast, with hints of date, toffee, brown sugar and a little pepper. Head is small, creamy, off-white with good lacing and good legs, and is mostly diminishing. Color is murky dark red/brown. Flavor starts lightly to moderately sweet, moderately acidic and lightly bitter, then the extra long finish is lightly sweet and acidic, and heavily bitter. Palate is medium to full, creamy, with a soft carbonation and a chalky, moderately astringent and very dry finish. Wow, what an assault of flavors. Malt dominant but well balanced by the hops. This is a first rate American Strong Ale.
3.6 Dark pour with a thin tan head that stuck around. Aroma is lovely hops, flavor is caramel with hop.
3.6 Big sweet malt backbone with heavy brown sugar and even sugar cookie malt. Plum and raisin present with a strong toffee finish. A little too sweet.
3.7 Handbottled 2008 bomber from Enniskillen. Nose of floral and citrusy hops with toffee and brown sugar. Hazy cherry amber with a nicely lacing half finger beige head. Flavor is nicely bitter with caramel and toffee. Finish is bitter with some lingering toffee. Like a lighter barleywine!
3.8 2008 Bottle. Brown in color with a big tan head. Grainy malt aroma with a bit of malt character and some dank hops. Bitter earthy hop flavor with some sweet malt and a lingering bitter finish. Aroma is mostly malt and the flavor has a ton of hops. Very deceptive and well played, Rogue.
3.6 15ht anniversary bomber from December 2003 thanks to Eric. Pours a dark brown color with a small brown head. The aroma was awesome; heavy citrus hops, sweeter malt notes, like a great barely wine. The flavor is quite hoppy, especially since it is 6 years old. Mellow caramel malts and light fruits. Nice.
3.9 Comes out of the tap a dark coffee-brown with a fairly thick, fine-bubbled tan head. Aroma is surprisingly hoppy and has a malty undertone, as well as a hint of molasses. Flavor is mainly hoppy and has touches of malt and caramel, as well as a whisper of sweetness. Smooth texture has a jazzy, fizzy edge. Earlier Rating: 7/15/2007 Total Score: 4.7 Color is a rich chocolaty brown with a thick and persistent head. The very hoppy aroma has smoky hints and a touch of coffee. Flavor is strongly hoppy and rather evergreen-ish, rather like drinking a pine tree; it is rich and satisfying, nice and bitter, with a trace of smokiness and a hint of burnt coffee. Strongly recommended to anybody who enjoys both hoppy beers and stouts/porters.
3.7 Beautiful ceramic bottle that probably raised the price at least 10 dollars. Dark brown pour with a solid tan head. Nice aroma balanced between a citrus/pine hop smell and a caramel malt aroma. Flavor is a bit of the same, with a nice hop finish. Solid beer, wish it had cost half as much.
3.9 Draft at NYC Gingerman. Roasty, tart malts. Nice bittering. Very smooth with nice lighter body. almost nitro-like creaminess. Caramel, toasted marshmallow on top of intense, wonderful bitter. Lovely to try again
3.5 Gorgeous head with strong flowery smell. Flavor is not as rewarding, nearly the same as the Sierra Nevada stout, or a good IPA- flavor is just hops. Other flavors are tricks caused by it’s dark brown color. I expected more complexity. I might like it more if I was a hop-head.
3.5 Bottle. Pours brown with a light tan head that leaves lacing as its consumed. Aroma is hoppy with pine, citrus, caramel malts and some nuttiness. Flavor is quite hoppy with piny resin, grapefruit, caramel and a hint of nuts with a creamy mouthfeel and a bitter hoppy finish.
3.7 On tap at 1702 during Rogue night - Pours a brown color with a small off white head. Faint lacing. Aroma is pleasant floral hops. Flavor is also hops with a bit of malt hiding in there. Has a astringent aftertaste. Medium body. This is one hoppy and bitter beer.
4.0 01.11.2008, On tap at the Rogue Ale house in San Francisco. The colour is dark brown. Pale brown head. The beer smells alittle like tequila!. There is also bitternes, juniperus and alcohol. Very nice complex ale.
3.8 Bottle: Poured a deep brown color ale with a huge thick foamy head with good retention and minimal lacing. Aroma consists of deep caramel malt with a dry hoppy finish. Taste is also dominated by some deep caramel malt with some sweet notes that are well balanced with a dry hoppy finish. Well done overall and something that I would go for again.
4.4 On tap at the flying saucer in KC. Pours a dark brown with some red streaks. A small, creamy, tan head that stayed for the session and was very lacy. Beautiful. Sweet and roasty aroma with a good amount of chocolate malts, nuttiness, and that Rogue hop smell that I love so much. Full bodied, creamy, and loaded with taste. Very complex. Intense amount of sweet malts and hops. Roasty, chocolate, nutty, caramel, piny. Overall, a very rich and warming beer that really hit the spot. Extremely bitter, but a great balance. Loved it.
3.9 A great ASA...pours pitch black with little head...very much a wnter ale with it’s strong in malty goodness, but not so hoppy. a dangerous beer in that you could drink a few very quickly and it would hit you
3.4 Pint @ Tyler’s in Apex. Great aroma, Sweet. Roasty. Cocoa, floral hops. Dark reddish brown color, good head that stayed for bit. Ok lace. Bittter sweet flavor, caramel, grapefruit bitterness. medium body, creamy mouthfeel, bitter finish. Great aroma, one to sniff for a while, the play between malts & hops is wonderful. Flavor fell short of aroma, narrowly bitter.
3.9 Draught @ Brewer’s on the Bay, Newport, OR. Pours a dark brownish red color with a small tan head. Malty bitter hoppy aroma with hints of chocolate and grapefruit. Sweetish malty hoppy bitter flavor with hints of grapefruit and caramel. Has a long malty hoppy bitter finish with a long bitter aftertaste.
3.6 Draft @ Capones: Poured a dark red/brown with not much head. The aroma was hoppy with sweet malts. The flavor was hoppy as well, with some chocolate malts, spice and well balanced. Overall a really tasty brew that might get better with age.
4.0 Slightly bitter hoppy aroma. Brownish red color. Malty hoppy flavor. Good balance. Strong aclcohol flavor but well balanced by the maltiness.
3.7 Tap @ OTH. 8.5ABV indicated. POurs black, with brownish head. Aroma, hoppy, light bitter chocolate. Taste is filled with the Rogue signature hops, coffee malts. Gained in flavor as it warmed up, got more chocolate and grains out it. Leave a dry finish.
3.0 Draft at Brouwers.

Apples, brown sugar, some hops on the aroma. Grapefruity hop flavor with burnt-ish chocolate malt. Extremely hot; this one felt 9% at least. I was underwhelmed.
3.7 750 ml. ceramic bottle - 2008 release. Pours a deep, dark orange color with a thick white head that leaves lacing as it’s consumed. The aroma is hops, with notes of malts. Flavor is relatively hoppy, with a nice balance of malts. However, for what it was - it was far too expensive coming in at nearly 23 dollars a bottle.
3.7 Deep umber mahogany color with a moderate head that settle to a thin coating of taupe bubbles. Big hoppy aroma, with mild ruby red grapefruit, light pine and citrus. Underlying malt scents with pale malts, caramel, molasses and light fruit. A cross between an american strong and an english barley wine aroma. Sweet malts and somewhat grassy hops in the start. THe grassy hops continues throughout the quaff, with herbs. pine and citrus bitterness building into the finish and linger. Fairly sharp spicy finish and linger. Some nuttiness comes in the linger as well. No doubt this would last a number of years in the crock/bottle, but at the price, one and done is good for me. Fairly soft in feel, but the acidity in the finish thins it out.
3.7 Pours the color of a chocolate lab. Large tan head. You can smell the hops in the aroma and it sits on some nutty chocolate. Strong and chocolatey at the start with tons of piney bitterness at the finish. Nice.
2.8 Brewers ale from 2008. Re-rating after first sample was disappointing. Bomber ceramic bottle. Hazy reddish with dense tan head and strong malty hoppy aroma. Hits of bigger things to come. This is a hearty ale but still the flavors are not clean. Hops flavor is poor and does not play nice with what could be a nice winter warmer. Hmmm, sadly, I’m disappointed again. The aroma led me built expectations but the flavor is a downer. Too bad.
3.7 (750 ml. ceramic bottle with swing top - 2008 relase) very deep amber with light tan head. Aroma of sweetish malt and some grassy hops. Flavor is grassy hops, sweetish malt, alcohol. Piney hops in the finish.
3.4 Growler from Peaks. Dark amber with a nice tan head. Aroma is fairly malty, with a light hoppiness to it also, caramel, and brown sugar. Taste is nice and hoppy with a light caramel tinge to it, long filling hoppiness with a sticky body.
