Rogue Double Dead Guy Ale

Rogue Double Dead Guy Ale

JLS Release #34: Double Dead Guy ~ initially released in kegs for JLS accounts, this new elixir will be launched in 750 ml ceramic bottles in the spring of 2008! D2 (our nickname for Double Dead Guy) is a new reincarnation of Rogue’s classic Dead Guy Ale. Mahogany in color, full bodied with an amazing mid-palette richness of toffee and caramel. The hops are evident also, with just enough to keep the maltiness in check. The finish lasts > 15 seconds!! D2 is Double the Fun!

3.3 Malty aroma with spicy and citrus hops in the background and quite a bit of fruity yeastiness. Palate begins with a big bracing bitterness... smooth maltiness and a little bit of toasted bread.. citric hops and a little bit of spice but the hop flavors are more in the background. It says 72 IBUs and I believe it... bitterness is a little out of whack but gets better as it warms and the malts start showing up more... subtle caramel and more toasted malt character... Definite but not bad alcohol and a lingering bitter and yeasty finish. Body is not as thick as I would have expected.. and I’m okay with that.. carbonation is fairly smooth... drinkability is much better as it warms.
3.7 Stoneware swingtop bottle, as Rogue XS Dead Guy Ale, from Costco, Sacramento. The ordinary Dead Guy Ale is not a favourite of mine, but this one is much better. Mahogany colour. The aroma is okay, but not outstanding. The flavour is excellent, malty and vinous with notes of toffee and caramel, also decent hops. Pleasant warming mouthfeel.
2.9 Under the name Dead Guy XS (2015 version at 8.1% abv) at Watering Hole on tap. Clear copper with a small off-white head that lingers. Brown sugar, toffee, light oak on the nose. Lots of caramel and malt flavors with some booze. The body seems way too thin. Woody. Prefer the regular.
3.5 Visual: Cellared for 2 years (2013), gorgeous painted black ceramic bottle with a black bailer-top. Pours translucent ruby red with barely any head, a thin hazy micro layer, a few micro tightly knit micro streams here and there. Nose: malty sweet caramel, lightly toasted, hints of bourbon. (lvl-6)-pungency Attack: slick-thick creamy, dense maltiness, background hoppy bitter, bourbon notes Mid-palate: full-bodied, (lvl-5)-sweetness, alcohol detection, (main) medium roast barley malt, toasted caramel, orange citrus Finish: bitter generic citrus hopped, off-dry malty finish. Summary: Love the ceramic bottle. Big body with lots of toasted caramel malt and a citrus hop to balance it out. Kind of straightforward after a glass, but enjoyable.
3.6 750ml bottle from the LCBO in Toronto, Ontario. Deep copper in colour with a thin but long lasting off-white head, excellent lacing. The aroma is of caramel, fruit, hops and light alcohol. The flavour is of sweet malts, caramel, fruity hops, light alcohol, some pepper. Sweet mouthfeel, medium body, moderate carbonation. Finishes long, sweet, warming. Pretty good stuff, a nice imperial Dead Guy.
3.6 750ml from 2008, that poured a murky medium brown with an off white head and decent lacing. The aroma for is an upfront ash or tobacco smell followed by caramels and toffee, also some dark fruits on the end. The flavor was more the same just a bit more pronounced with a warm boozey finish. Over all for ad old as this is the flavor are still strong and warm and really good.
3.5 Slight orange flavor. Decent richness. Hazy deep color. Not heavy. Abv is hidden in it. Tap
3.8 Restrained citrus/pine aroma in a cloudy Amber pour. Taste is amazingly laid back and gives no hint of the huge hit (strength wise) one is going to receive. Has to be close to my favourite Rogue brew.
3.7 Bomber. Tasted on 5/2/15. Bottle from Total Wine @ Dallas, TX. Shared with Espo. This was aged over year. Very nice color aroma & taste. Very nice overall.
3.1 Draft. Pours thick from the faucet in a mostly clear burnt orange hue, topped with a small but dense head of sandy tan. The aroma has similar fruity yeast esters to Dead Guy: red delicious apples, white raisin, orange blossom. A bit of honey maltiness as well. The flavor has a similar sweetness, but here it’s more malt-focused -- honey, caramel, even a hint of toast. Substantial bitterness settles in at the finish and balances the sugary malts. It’s drinkable, but lacks any special qualities that would require a second helping.
5.0 Better in my opinion than the standard dead guy...as good if not better than double bastard. Mouthful of complex malts and balanced hops of big citrus and earthy hops. Long lasting malty finish.
3.4 on tap @ Party Town / Florence KY --- Cloudy dark amber color, frothy beige head, puffy bands of lace. Taste is caramel malt that grows as it turns more semi-sweet, glides through the palate, growing bigger as it adds solid, balancing, hop bittering. Not terrific, but certainly solid enough.
2.5 [2/13/15] Draught at Rogue Ales Public House in San Francisco. Nice clear amber. Sweet aroma with caramel and a bit of honey. Sweet flavor with caramel and alcohol. Medium-bodied.
3.7 Pours a hazy, dark amber colour with a large, foamy, creamy head. Had alot of carbonation, very bubbly. Good lacing. Strong, sweet flavours along the lines of toffee and caramel. Malts are evident in the flavour as well as aroma. notes of spices in the taste and in the finish. Smell a tiny bit of the alcohol and maybe some breads. More hoppy than malty. Very good for high abv!
3.8 On tap at Rogue, San Francisco. Pours golden color, small white head. Aroma is malty caramel, toffee, candied fruits. Flavor is similar. Really delicious candied dark fruits. Slightly bitter finish. Really nice.
3.2 Bottle shared with others. I don’t know, I just didn’t care for this as much as the regular dead guy ale. Aroma is light toffee and caramel, hay notes, stale malt. Flavor is similar with a light grassy hop note. Sweet at first with a lightly bitter finish. It’s a decent brew but based on the price I would never repurchase this one.
3.6 Draft. Pours a cloudy dark amber color. Aroma and taste are sweet with toffee and some hops.
3.4 750 ml bottle from STLWill- thanks again, Will! Opened in line at the Side Project Pulling Nails Blend #2 release, I know this one didn’t give me much cred but I tend to bring home beers for Thanksgiving that aren’t as sought after because my family doesn’t care either way and is just excited to try new things. But we made it through some other stuff that day without getting to this. So this 2008 vintage is what I had to share. And it’s a craft beer store staple that I’d never had, somehow. Pours a muddy amber-brown with a tiny beige ring for a head. Blindfolded, I’d have said "aged American strong ale," because this one had notes of cardboard, brown sugar, caramel, toast, and maybe some earth and tobacco. The body has thinned over the years but has some slight heft left, but not much carbonation. Not bad at all, really. Probably better fresh, but this was fine.
3.6 On tap at Rochester Tap Room. Clear orange / brown. Sort of had barley-esque character, but a bit better, as I hope for Strong. A bit more balance. Plenty of sweet though, and plenty of toffee. Sticky thick mouthfeel. Liked.
4.0 This is the XS version in the big dark bottle, vintaged 2013 that I have been recommended to put here. It’s a beautiful looking beer with its lush orange-amber colour and a thick cream coloured head. The aromas are of lush stonefruit predominantly: apricots and peaches galore with pears, nectarine and almonds. Thick and viscous with pinches of bitterness, I could have drunk more of this were it not for the fact it made me fall into blissful slumber.
3.6 Pours a finger of head on a dark straw colored body. The aroma is mild grain and honey. The taste is caramel and honey sweetness with a mild dry bitterness to balance it out. The texture is crisp but thicker. Really enjoyable.
5.0 I'm a fan of IPAs and I really sharp, sometimes bitter, high alcohol brews. This selection was very tasty.
3.3 XS Dead Guy: The nose is honey, toasted nuts, some booze. Clear burnt orange, fully fading head. Some sweetness, pretty well balanced. Medium-full bodied, a little hot.
3.8 "big doughey, dopplebock nose, with some added hops. this beer is classified generically as a strong ale...more like a slightly hoppy dopplebock. complex taste, especially as it warms, but something is just a touch off. Very good, but there are excellent db’s (or strong ales) out there for much less. Glad we tried it though. Pours with a nice frothy head. Mahagony color, and a complex palate."
3.5 Really good and really strong. Much much better than the original Dead Guy.
3.5 Tap. Pours a muddy amber color with a slight ring of cream colored head. Aroma of malt, grain, and some booze. Taste of malts, rye, and some booze.
4.6 Limited release in a 22oz bottle. Stronger than most ales. Slightly sweet, not too hopsy. Goes down good. Seems unfiltered or like homemade.
4.1 Rated from notes taken on 11 Jul 2011 -- This is a beer that Rogue doubled, and did it right. This is regular Dead Guy, but for big boys, maltier with a little more booziness.
3.5 On tap at the SF taproom. It pours a clear auburn color with an off white head. The aroma has some distinct sweet tea notes with caramel and cherry like maltiness. Touches of herbal hops. The flavor is the same. Fruity tea with caramel and a floral bitterness. Medium bodied. Pretty nice.
4.1 Transfer from BA review on 8-30-12- Served on tap in a 10 oz snifter Appearance – Served a reddish amber colored beer with a small white head. The head has fantastic retention and fades to give a nice great level of lacing. This is one fantastic looking brew. Smell – The aroma is heavy of a bready malt and a nice caramel sweetness. Mixed with these smells are lighter aromas of a floral and herbal nature as well as a lighter citrus hop smell. Taste – The taste begins of a huge malty flavor that is lightly sweetened with caramel and honey. The sweetness begins to lose ground however with flavors of a hoppy nature coming to the tongue. Piney and earthy tastes make themselves known and mix with some herbal flavors. While lost for a moment the sweet flavors of a caramel nature come back stronger at the end, and combine with the hop and malt to leave a balanced taste on the tongue. Mouthfeel – This beer has a super creamy body with a quite low level of carbonation. It’s fantastic!! The creaminess is god for the malty flavors with the low level of carbonation accentuating the somewhat lighter hop flavors; bringing them from the background. Overall – The look and feel of this brew was outrageous!! While not as fantastic as the look and feel, its other attributes were great as well. Definitely one to try.
