3.0 Bomber. Clear darker amber brown, lasting firm creamy tan foam. Promising aroma of smoky caramel with a whiff of spicy rye. Taste is somewhat bland, toasted sweet caramel malts, some mild rye, flat cola finish. Soft carbonation, light-medium bodied, low hopped. Disappointing. LBW (Lagerboys Be Wary)
3.5 Bottiglia 33cl comprata da giangaspero e bevuta a casa. Scura con bella schiuma. Poco carbonata, moto caramello, amara. Non eccezionale ma buona ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhold
3.5 Pours a cola colored brown with an off white head which lingers......aroma of spicy rye notes, raisins, caramel......taste is a quite sharp rye spiciness, medium mouthfeel, plum notes finishing with grainy aftertaste.
3.6 [Bottle] Very dark brown in color with a large light brown head on top. Notes of sarsaparilla, rye breads and sweet toffee in the nose. Lots of rye malt, caramel, toffee, spicy hops and root beer hints in the flavor. Light smokey notes are also there. Soda-like carbonation. High drinkability. Tasting notes from 7/2014.
3.3 Bottle. Pours dark murky brown with an off white head. Earthy aroma with pine, dark fruits, hint of the spice. Taste is very earthy, dark fruit notes, grassy, toffee. Medium body. Nice
3.3 Pours clear medium brown color with tan head. Aromas of rye, lightly smoked malt, and some hops. Lightly smoked malt flavor with some spicy rye and caramel. Medium body with average carbonation.
3.2 Draft. Pours a cloudy light brown. Aroma and taste are slightly sweet with brown sugar and bready malts.
3.3 Bottle. Brown beer with a tan head. Grapefruit and light pine aroma. Grapefruit and earthy flavor with spice and light lemon. Medium bodied. Grapefruit and earth linger with spice and grain.
3.7 Odd ball. The aroma is superb. It would rate an easy eight if it were just a bit stronger. Bread, caramel, hay, cereal, coffee, nuts, all are present. Resin. Yeast is dough, barnyard, basement aromas, leaves. Banana, butterscotch, clove, cooked vegetables, licorice, raisin, vanilla... Fuck it.... Aroma is an eight. It pours a gorgeous copper brown/black with a nice tan/off white head. Really impressive. It tastes good but way weighted to sour... a downfall. Palate is smooth, standard, and slick but with stinging lingering bitter. Sight and smell are top tier but consumption doesn’t live up to expectations. Glad I tried it. Would drink again. Would not buy again.
3.7 On tap, poured into a sampler glass. The aroma is heavy with rye bread and not much else. It’s a dark, clear, orange brown color with a thick white head and cloudy surface that leaves behind an abundant dense, web lace. The taste is a balanced blend of medium sweet and bitter. The thin textured beer has a soft, creamy carbonation. The medium body is a rich, toasted rye flavor that finishes clean and crisp with a light touch of citrus.
3.6 Transfer from BA review on 12-31-13- Served on tap in a pint glass Appearance – The beer is served a copper brown color with a tiny brown head. The head has a good level of retention slowly fading to leave a good level of streaky lace on the sides of the glass. Smell – The aroma is heaviest of a rye bread smell mixed with some sweeter aromas of caramel and a bit of toffee. Along with these aromas were some spice aromas and a bit of a bready smell. Taste – The taste begins with a rye bread flavor mixed with a little bit of caramel and toffee sweetness. The sweetness fades as the taste advances with the rye flavors getting even more potent. As the rye grows stronger some hoppy flavors of a grassy and pine nature greet the tongue. The flavors start out weaker and grow stronger toward the end, where they are joined by a light bit of earth and a resurgence of the caramel and toffee, leaving a lightly sweetened and hopped rye bread flavor to linger on the tongue. Mouthfeel – The body of the beer is on the average side in its thickness and creaminess with a carbonation level that is rather average. Both are quite appropriate for the rye flavors of the brew and when mixed with the lighter hop and sweeter flavors make for an easy drinking feel. Overall – A tasty and easy drinking rye that is a little more on the mild hop side. Quite enjoyable.
3.3 Bottle at Zoo Brew. Pours a clear deep amber with a light brown head that dissipates to the edges. Aroma has a lot of rye and a smoked meat note with a bit of sweetness underlying. Flavor has rye and smoked throughout with a touch of bitterness in the finish.
2.9 "A very spicy dry rye brew, almost overly so. Muddled kinda ugly pour. Beyond that there was some non descript hops and muddled malts, but as much as I like rye beer I wasn’t too impressed with this one. It was ok."
3.7 650 ml. Lightly cloudy dark brown with a lasting film of bubbles. Nose is dark toasted bread, chocolate and molasses. Tastes of dark toast, sourish molasses, spicy rye and touches of smoke and citrus. Medium body has medium carbonation and is to the sweet side.
3.3 Sample at Daily Growler Powell. Cloudy brownish-amber color with a thin light beige head that recedes quickly to an outer ring. Spotty lacing on the glass. Aroma of smoked malt, fruit and rye. Medium body with flavors of grainy malt, spicy rye and earthy hops. The finish is subtly smoky with a rye malt aftertaste. Decent overall.
3.2 Visual: Pours nutty root beer brown with smallish foamy head, a very thin layer of micro retention, some decent lacing, some varied speed streams. Nose: light brown sugar malts, smells like a brune (lvl-4)-pungency Attack: very biting crisp, yeasty sourness Mid-palate: background hopped sourness, (lvl-5)-sweetness, (MAIN) brown sugar malts, caramel, bready, yeasty Finish: hint of quick spiciness,, smooth-crisp mouthfeel malty off-dry soft hopped bitter finish. Summary: Very drinkable especially while still cold. Overall good body, mouthfeel, and flavour. Forgettable but not regrettable.
3.2 Light brown, slightly phenolic aroma, sweetish bit then some earthy brown malts, Munich maybe? Off-dry finish
3.5 Pint at the Rogue pub in Newport. Not many Roggenbiers here in the states! Nice earthy flavors marry well w/subtle hopping creating a very quaffable experience. A well brewed beer.
2.9 660ml bottle (BierKompass.de) Sweet aroma, marshmallow and that fake nougat. Later celeriac. Even later white wine. Kinda savoury taste. Some odd herbal aspects refer back to the celeriac. Full smooth palate, soft carbonation. A bit of a mixed up mess. Sweet roasted marshmallow, rough burnt edge.
3.0 (Bottle, 0.65 l, courtesy of FatPhil, 20140715) The beer poured dark brown and clear. Its head was quite large, white and it lasted long. Aroma had malts, molasses and caramelly sweetness. Palate was medium bodied with medium carbonation. Flavours were sweetness, sugary sweetness, molasses, herbalness, malts and bitterness. Aftertaste was sweet, malty and bitter. Way too sweet.
3.6 castano buona schiuma discreta persistenza lieve notavafruttata agrumata caramellata leggero affumicato un tocco speziato amaro piuttosto contenuto
2.6 Bottle to point glass. Appearance: muddy water brown. Small head with grey-white color. Very different look. Aroma: rye, weak aroma. Taste: malty, brown sugar, bread, faint touch of cacao. Feel: a touch flat and watery, but easy drinking.
2.6 tap. reddish brown with small head. i’m completely unfamiliar with the style, and this is rather odd. medium malt base with some spicy rye. earthy. doesn’t work for me.
3.6 Brown-red color with a small persistent foam collar. Aromas of spices, smoke, malt and caramel. Flavors of malt, roast, barley sugar. Couleur brun-roux avec un petit col de mousse persisant. Nez d’épices, de fumé, de malt et de caramel. Saveurs de malt, grillé et sucre d’orge.
2.2 Poured from tap into a pint glass. Very little head. Kind of a plasticy taste. Wasn't terrible to where I couldn't finish, but wasn't thrilled about it.
2.2 Transparent cherry sepia, thin white ring. Stale oat and sugar nose, faint rye peppery spic but forgettable. Flavor is worse, tons of sugar and playdoh, sticky and empty in the end where toast and sugars combat for what’s left of this sweet emptiness. Rye is inexpressive, underattenuated, no complexity, wort-esque.
3.8 From the bomber: it’s dark iced tea brown with pale, well-sustained foam. It smells sweet of cherry, toffee, caramel, almost wine-y. The flavor is nice and caramelly sweet, rich, with a nice rye bite. Full-flavored, medium mouthfeel, lightly creamy. Really a nice balance of sweet and medicinal characteristics of the grain.
3.1 650 ml bottle, thanks olio. Pours a dark murky amber colour. Aroma of red berries, bread and some sweetness. Flavour of sweet caramel, earthiness, mushrooms, red berries, bread and grass. Spiciness as well. Medium bodied and smooth malty finish. Nice balance and quite unique, but weird.
3.2 65 cl bottle @ Timo A. Pours clear dark copper color with a small head. Quite weird on the nose, some dark berries, rye, caramel malts, mild grain and faint hops. Flavor is fruity and there’s a lot of carbonation, gooseberries, malts, rye, some toffee and more malts. Very lively carbonated palate, feels quite light considering the abv. Somewhat unique. Lacks something essential though. 3423
3.5 A light brown appearance with tan two finger head. Smell is hop, malt, yeast, rye, a general earthiness. Taste is subdued and clever. Slight hop approach, counteracted by the grains. Slightly toasted.
