Rogue Imperial Red

Rogue Imperial Red

Imperial Red was originally brewed in 2008. It is deep copper chestnut in color with toffee, brown sugar, nuts and spice aromas. A rich supple entry leads to an off-dry medium-full body of tangy raisins and citrus marmalade, bittersweet chocolate, and mild spice flavors. It finishes with a long nutty, fruity fade.

Malts: Great Western Harrington, Klages, Hugh Baird Crystal, Black, Munich, Chocolate and rolled oats.
Hops: Willamette, Cascade and Chinook.
Yeast & Water: Rogue’s Pacman Yeast & Free Range Coastal Water.

3.3 cute pony bottle. Deep amber with small head. Hoppy red ale. Caramel, fruits and big hoppy bite. A little boozy.
2.7 Pours a very cloudy dark amber color with a short-lived tan head. Heavy, rich malty nose. Moderately thick mouthfeel. Malty flavor. Ample bitterness. Why’d I pay $4.99 for a 7 oz bottle?? I’m nearly over Rogue.
3.5 7oz Bottle: Poured a coppery orange with a jello off white head. Sweet malts and yeast come forward in the aroma. Taste is malts, with fruit blend of raisin and citrus, very dry but sweet finish.
3.1 Bottle. This is a nice big ruddy red with lots of deep malt and hop flavour.
3.6 Nip sized bottle. Poured a deep amber color with a small sized off white head. Caramel, toffee, some chocolate, and dark fruits.
3.9 7 ounce bottle. Pricey, like most of Rogue’s ales. They’re good, don’t get me wrong, but sometimes the price makes me seek other beers. Just a note, mind you. Beer is beer, quality is quality, Rogue is good quality beer. This one pours a slightly hazy dark auburn/red with a pretty good head that left good lacing and lasted quite a bit. Aroma and flavor wise, this one is dead-on for what I think of when I consider an American amber/red ale. Pungent maltiness, biscuit, caramel, toffee, some fruits with emphasis on darker fruits, with an appropriate balancing hops presence, which is high, and matches the ABV well. Rogue did a good job with this one on flavor, body, taste. I’m starting to be able to taste the pacman yeast more consistently now. While I do understand why a brewery might use a specific yeast all the time (not an uncommon occurrence), I sometimes would like to taste things that specific brewers might create if they could use different yeast more often, like us homebrewers do. Rogue with English ale yeast or Irish ale yeast? Stone with US-05? Might be interesting.
3.9 Hazy red brown coloured with a medium sized off-white head. Sweet and fruity aroma of caramel, hops and pine. Dry hoppy finish.
3.3 At the White Lion, London. Redbrownish beer with a small offwhite head. Dried dark fruits, hoppy and chocolate aroma. Fruity, dried dark fruits, some bitterness, floral and hoppy flavour.
4.7 I was expecting a little more malt then hops but it balances nice. The color is a nice deep amber which i expect alot of reds to have but few seldom do
3.3 Bottle. Cloudy mahogany color. Pungent aroma, smells like a Belgian. Nice. Flat palate, bread notes with fruit lingering afterwards. Ok
3.6 Backlog rating 1-02-2009 (Flip Top Bottle) This beer has a medium sized fizzy beige head that mostly diminished, cloudy body, visible carbonation, and an orange-brown hue. The Aroma is malty, toffee, spicy, some hints of caramel, nutty, sweet, and citrus hops. The Flavor is malty, sweet, citrus hops, spicy, fruity, nutty, and the ABV comes through. The Palate is tingly and this is a medium bodied beer. Overall, this beer is very quaffable, is worth trying, a beer that not only will I drink again, but a beer I recommend.
4.0 This was delicious with roast grain and some caramel sweetness, maybe chocolate, not enough hops, while not required by the style required by me
3.9 Hazy amber-red body. Intense malty aroma with alcoholic touches. Heavily bitter, moderately sweet flavour. Complex flavour. Very lovely.
3.7 Pours a dark reddish brown color with a light brown head of foam. Scent of bitter malts and hops are the most evident. Has a rather thin texture with an almost burnt wood taste to it. Some sweet caramel malts to it with an almond hint. Not my favorite of Rouge beers. Certainly unique tasting but not my kind of beer. Glad it was only a 7oz beer.
3.5 Pours a dark murky amber color with with a small bubbly head that quickly fades. Aroma is brown sugar, caramel, toffee, and spice. Taste is slightly sweet caramel and toffee with a light spiciness. Finish is pretty smooth, more caramel and a bit of chocolate and nuttiness. Pretty solid but not worth the price for the small bottle.
3.5 Bright red in colour with no head. Chocolate/hoppy aroma. Floral caramel flavour. Nicely balanced beer, not too overpowering of hop or alcohol.
3.8 Pours dark copper with almost no head. Smells of a complex blend of alcohol and malt. Definite notes of chocolate and brown sugar with an intense bite. A big beer that I could easily drink as a sessional.
3.6 bottle. Poured hazy orangey brown with a subdued off-white head. Sweet nutty aroma. Full dry tart mouthfeel. Malty nutty flavour with some raisin and spicy notes. Finishes dry.
3.6 Bottle. Clear deep amber/brown with small beige head. Aroma is malt, fruit, hop, dark fruits and caramel. Flavour is malt, caramel, medium sweet, hop, oak, little chocolate, dark fruits and medium bitter.
3.5 Hazy reddish brown with a beige head. Aroma is sweet, malty, caramel, dark fruit and alcohol. Flavor is quite sweet and rather bitter. Sweet and moderate bitter finish. 300912
3.6 Bottle. Nice head with good duration. Color is amber. Aroma and taste are rich caramel, malt, hops, fruits, nuts and notes of chocolate.
3.6 Bottle. Murky brown pour. Very nice aroma and flavor of toffee, earth, sweet caramel, maybe a hint of wood, and some nice hop balance. Very good.
3.1 No head, deep red color. 7oz bottle is enough. Slight alcohol burn on the way down but fairly sweet at the same time.
3.6 Bid muddy red pour. Quite viscous, you can almost see the calories! Big robust beer with good length. Even though it has high IBU’s it is well masked.
3.2 Pours a cloudy muddy red color no head sticks around. Lots of malty ness and almost a earthy flavor. Alcohol is there. Worst of there XS series but just my opinion. Still a good beer.
3.7 Pricey little 7 oz bottle. Floral aroma with a whiff of earth. Strong, malty, and full of grain flavor. A warming mouthful and a strong, dry, bready taste. It is a little harsh but still impressive.
3.1 Insomma, le red ale mi piacciono ma questo ha lasciato alquanto a desiderare.... Peccato.
3.3 Pony bottle back in the day. Poured a very deep copper color with small to medium head, good lace. Aromas of brown sugar, spicy hops, caramel toffee malts. Taste is somewhat stale earthy hops, sour fruits, lots of spice. Some chocolate in the aftertaste.
3.3 A broom straw flavor of malt, so the beer is slick and somewhat sweet with flavor of dark cherry wine and dried prune. after some sips i noticed a grape juice flavor somewhat slick that did not overpower the straw. some fruit punch in the frothy head. it has some nice depth.
4.0 750ml ceramic bottle with a swingtop pours a deep amber color with a 2 finger white head that leaves some nice lacing behind. Aroma is caramel with some roasted grains and citrus and earthy notes. Taste is well balanced between the caramel and roasted notes and the citrusy and earthy hop bitterness. Medium bodied with some nice carbonation leaving a pleasant sensation on the palate. As far as Imperial Red Ales go, this was outstanding. Very tasty and very highly recommended.
