3.4Enjoyed via draft in an English pub glass. The beer pours a medium amber color with a moderate white head. Carbonation is light but not cask-esque. The nose gives hints of medium to high English crystal malts. The palate strikes the appearance of a balanced American amber ale. Malt sweetness greets the palate first, followed by a just-about-balancing hop bitterness. Overall, the beer seems out of style for an American strong ale, and strikes a more convincing resemblence to an east coast amber ale. Unspectacular.
2.9On tap at RnH. Pretty dry and astringent, malty too. I tasted some citrus and brown sugar also. Not much spice or esters - maybe I was expecting something like that because of the name. I am getting to like Rogue’s brews more than I used to, but this was not their best i.m.o.
2.8Tap at Barcade: Pours a ruby, deep brown with a tan film. Has a toasted barley aroma- mild estery notes, but fairly clean. A bit tannic and husky, however. Also some mild dark fruit suggestions. Fluffy, tannic mouthfeel. Quite sharp and astringent malt tannins. Tastes like they sparged at too high of a temperature.
2.6Draft: Pours a cranberry juice red. Beer is not balanced well. very wormy sweet and hops is overpowering. Finishes bitter and leaves some astringency. Am I drinking the same beer?
3.6Poured a dark amber with tan head lacing on the glass sweet hoppy aroma had a nice caramel citrus malt flavor and very earthy almost herbal taste as well then a nice medium hop flavor that gave a slight spicy aftertaste was very good and sessionable
3.6Draft. Ruby brown body with a tan head. Floral and earth y hop tones with a lightly caramel sweet malt bill. Citrus and grass y notes. Nice.
3.5On tap at Kahootz, listed as Rogue’s "John’s Locker Stock"... apparently a random brew directly from the brewery. I’m pretty sure the waitress called it Mogul Madness, not Mogul Ale. Very nice brew... darkish, spicy hops, not much bitterness. Nice head and lacing. Maybe just a bit astringent on the finish. Overall very good.
2.9Draft@ Issaquah Brewhouse. Some of you Old Skool craft brew drinkers may remember the awesome Mogul Madness these guys bottled back some 10-15 years ago; a roasty, Cascade hopped Porter similar to 3Floyds Christmas brew, that, this beer is not... Pours hazy copper with a tan head. Fresh floral hop aroma with some caramel malt sweetness. Medium body. Flavor is burnt caramel with lots of hop bitterness, not really any flavors just lots of bitterness, like too many of Rogues American Strong Ales seem to be these days. Disappointing.
3.8On tap at Sanctuary. Very full aroma filled with hops and good variety of them (makes sense given what was put into it). The most prominent aroma notes were citrus and an earthy herbal. Some fairly strong mild fruits in the aroma as well. Pretty decent pour with a small creamy thick bubble head, nice retention with some scattered lacing, medium body in appearance and dark ruby grapefruit in color. Grapefruit and other heavy citrus notes are also players in the flavor. Also, earth, melon fruit, heavier mild fruits, and caramel cereal grains. Well balanced, and a good medium body and full flavored feel. A quite enjoyable JLS. A beer that I wouldn’t have minded drinking all night.
3.8On tap at the Sanctuary in Iowa City. Pours a dark, but clear brown body with a thick, dense and creamy, dirty tan colored head that has some nice retention and lacing. Aroma is cookie malts and hops. Some soft toasted toffees, cocoa, and earth. The hops give off mostly a citrus. Flavor is pretty nice. Soft bready malts, toasted toffee, light roasted grains, and more noticeable citrus hops and chocolate. Creamy, medium to full body. Somewhat grainy in the finish with a modest earthy lingering taste. Overall, a nice, full flavored beer. Good one.
3.7On tap at Sanctuary. Very nice. A fairly dark beer, lots of hops in the nose. Creamy body, full roasted malt flavor and a long, dry, bitter finish.
3.5On tap at El Bait Shop. Pours a deep red color with a medium head and great lace. The aroma is caramel up front with some fruity hops. The flavor is very bitter with a mild roastiness producing a coffee flavor not normally seen in a beer or this character. This has a nice little fruitiness but it just gets absolutley choked by bitterness.
3.4On tap at the Brick Store.
Pours a deep clear copper with a big tan head that clings to the side of the glass on the way down, leaving pretty good lacing.
The aroma was heavy on the caramel malts with some decent earthy hops coming through but not dominating.
The taste is a bit hoppier than the aroma with lots of spicy, earthy hops on top of the massive caramel malt backbone.
The mouthfeel is medium bodied with good carbonation and has lots of hop stickiness that lingers on the palate.
This is a decent, well-balanced ale that doesn’t stand out in any way but certainly goes down easy.
4.0one my rogue favorites, had on tap at brick store in decatur, ga. very smooth and drinkable, smells wonderful.
3.5Draft at Brick Store Pub. Pours a deep, clear, dark ruby brown with a tan head. The aroma is earthy, woody, and malty with caramel. spicy hops, and alcohol. The flavor starts malty sweet, very earthy hops, and spice with subtle coffee and alcohol. The finish is dry and spicy with some bitterness, graininess, and light alcohol. The mouthfeel is medium-bodied with drying alcohol and medium high carbonation. Overall, pleasant and drinkable, but the alcohol is little rough and the the body is thinner than expected. It is very good at first but after a whole pint I was ready for something a little different.
3.8Tap @ Brick Store Pub. Poured a pretty copper brown with a lot of lace. Very heavy caramel with a resinous finish that was tough to stop drinking.
3.4Tasted on tap at the Celebrator Best of the West Beerfest on 2/15/2009. This American Strong Ale pours a dark brown color from the tap. Medium sized white foamy head. The aroma is caramel and fruity with some grapefruity hops, Medium bodied ASA. The malts are caramel and sweet. The hops are grapefruity and earthy. Nice carbonation. Nice hoppy malty beer. Mouthfeel is full and round. Finish is clean and smooth. Aftertaste is slightly bitter.
3.8Pours a translucent reddish dark brown with a thick, pale tan head that persists. Aroma is not strong but quite tempting, malty with chocolaty undertones. Flavor is malty and chocolaty with hoppy undertones and hints of cloves. Texture is fizzy and fairly smooth.
3.6On tap at the Golden Rail. Pours a deep clear brown with a thin white/tan head. Earthy hoppy aromas backed up with toast and a bit of malt. Body is medium thin with a good malty flavor with some chocolaty notes. Finishes with a good long bitterness.
3.0On tap at the Ginger Man, NYC. A very biscuity, buttery aroma. The appearance was a hazelnut brown, modest white head. Medium body, very watery. Some caramel, slight citrus hops. A little bitterness on the finish, like a grapefruit. Not bad, not great.
3.4This poured a dark red brown color with an off white head. Aroma was some roasted malts as well as aromatic hops. Flavor was a bit on the hoppy bitter side, but I wouldnt call it hoppy, just enoguh to balance out the sweetness of the malts. Decent beer.
3.6Draught at Rogue Ales Public House, SF
Chocolate colour. Small, tan head.
Fruity and hoppy aroma.
Some harsh chocolate in the flavour. Loads of grassy hoppiness. Dry bitterness.
4.1JLS draft pint at Barley’s. Uncloudy, deep chestnut with garnet highlights. Nose is citrus, near-scorched caramel and dried wood. Tastes of grapefruit, burnt toffee, oak and cocoa. Medium body is watery, well-dried by hops and roast, and lightly carbonated.
3.6On tap as Mogul Madness, a John’s Locker Stock release. Dark red-brown with a thin off white head. Aroma is caramel, sweet malts and piles of citrus hops. Grapefruity. Taste is more caramel malt, very biscuity, cookie, some chocolate bock like notes underneath, and more powerful grapefruit hops with a good bitterness. Easy to put down and sneaks up on you.
3.822 oz bomber poured into a tulip glass. Poured a dark mahogany color with a creamy tan head. Aroma of citrus hops and malt. Flavor was grapefruit and some sweet malt. Good beer.
3.6(draft @ The Old Toad - Rochester, NY) A dark, hoppy ale? That I had to try. Very dark in color with a thick tan head. Aroma had a lot going on. Lots of floral hop notes, sweet and caramel malts, and some resin. Flavor had a lot going too. Lots of citrus and floral hops at the beginning with a smooth and sweet malty middle and some fruity sweetness and resin notes at the end. Finishes rather clean. Quite nice.
4.5Look - Dark, very dark amber. Almost black. Thick creamy head.
Smell - Very complex in smell. I smell something new everytime I smell it. Malty, bitter hop smell. Grapefruity/Piney hop smell. Pretty good.
Taste - Complex as hell. Very bitter, grapefruit bitter. Fruity/piney. Amazing. Malty also. Great balance.
3.6On tap at The Sanctuary. Pours a clear reddish brown with a one finger creamy beige head, fading to a film after a couple minutes. Aroma of bitter citrus--grapefruit rinds to be precise--with some scorched caramel notes. Besides a little raisin, there isn’t much else. Lots of bitterness up front in the flavor with all of the aforementioned aromas, though there is an added dry woody note. Even the sweet notes seem bitter--bittersweet! Dry finish with unbalanced bitterness peaking at a 7-8. Medium full body with moderate carbonation. Pretty good, but almost no balance and not much for complexity.
3.7Tap at the sanctuary. Pours a dark brownish red with a thin tan head. Strong hop and malt aroma, some biscuit and grapefruilt. Flavor is similar, kind of jumbled. Very bitter and underbalanced. Could use a few weeks to settle down a bit and it would be great.
3.7Draft at the Sanctuary in Iowa City. Poured a clear mahogany-red color. Head was light tan and sticky with good retention and lacing. If you can imagine what being flogged with a burlap sack full of hops tastes like you can grasp the essence of this beer without being in the same room with it. The aroma was of brown sugar, burnt toffee, distilled grapefruit, and sprucy hops. If there was any sweetness it was suppressed by the assertive hop bitterness that peaked at about 8 out of 10. There was plenty of bitter grapefruit rind and tar in the flavor which was softened only by a malty brown sugar element. A distinctly Rogue-ish beer.
