3.5 Bottle. Pours reddish brown with a thin tan head. Aroma of caramel, pine, citrus and coffee. Flavor was roasty with chocolate, coffee, caramel, pine, citrus and had a bitter finish.
3.5 Decent Black IPA. Smooth taste of hops and malt, not much else though. Bit standard.
Ligeros notas dulces y tostadas. Normal, sin muchas sorpresas.
3.3 Draft: Nearly clear, red-brown.... Woody, caramel and alcohol aroma. Taste is woody.....dry...caramel and citrus. Tasty.
3.7 Botella de 65cl en El Cabanon, con Andrés Lúpulo. Sabor perfecto. Gran cerveza para una gran ocasión
3.4 Black IPA? Ehh dunno. Balanced malt and hop flavour. Viscous mouth feel. Spiced bouquet. Very nice.
4.0 Color deep red with medium brown head. Aroma malt, caramel, roasted, hoppy, orange. Taste bitter, fruits, malt, roasted, caramel.
3.7 Draft. Vanilla caramel malt and orange peel aroma. Dark amber with moderate head. Sweet caramel malt and orange peel flavor. Very solid.
4.1 Bottle from Bev 4 Less: Poured a dark shade of brown while a thick frothy layer of head rested up top. The aroma is dominated with the scent of hops, however, just enough roasted malts shine through and clearly distinguish that this is not an ordinary IPA. As for the drink, flavor is extremely well balanced between the dark malt and citrus like hops and really compliment each other nicely making this one of the better yet more tame black IPA’s. Finally Rogue released something that was worth my while.
3.2 Very aromatic. Sweet. Lots of carbonation. Very malty. Unique, indeed...not sure what to think of this but definitely good.
3.8 Pouts a reddish dark brown with a one finger tan head which fades to nice lacing. Aroma is of citrus, pine, coco nibs, toasted sweet malts, and some spices. Taste is about the same as the aroma. Has a medium body body with a semi creamy mouthfeel and a semi bitter, medium finish. Overall, a pretty nice, festive black IPA.
3.6 Draft at Moriartys. Clear reddish brown pour. Off-white head. Very bitter malty brew. Burnt orange peels. Cherry stones. Green peppercorns. Chocolate nibs. Varnish. Big bite for such a relatively low ABV. Did not like it at first but its growing on me.
4.2 Dark brown with red tint and off white head. Aroma is pine and citrus. Taste follows nose with emphasis on bitter grapefruit. Good beer. Not sure what I would lable it, but did not seem like a black ipa to me.
4.4 This black IPA has its hops assertive, but not too much. Tastes like a grapefruit was squeezed into it, but with just the right amount. Very good and delicious. Last one at my beer store, hope to find it again some time.
3.5 The beer poured decently with a dark brown/reddish hue that passes almost no light through it, has a mild amount of head and has very little lacing on the glass. The beer smells decent with a good blend of caramel malts, mild hoppy notes, and a chocolate /coffee smell. The beer tastes decent with a great blend of chocolate/coffee/caramel malts and a mildly hoppy finish. The mouthfeel is average as the beer is moderately carbonated, full bodied, and leaves you somewhat dry. Overall, a slightly above average strong ale with good blended taste but somewhat flat.
3.4 Pours out brown with a solid tan head that has staying power. Massive lacing down the whole glass. Smells of coffee and some piney hops. Tastes about like it smells. Enough hop presence to let you know its there, but a very well balanced beer. Solid but not exceptional. Mouthfeel is pretty average. For a winter warmer, I’d like it to be a bit thicker than it is. I’ve had better and worse both from Rogue and from this style. I was hoping the deliciousness of Amarillo would shine through a bit more than it did, but still a solid brew.
3.2 Bottle sample at the tasting. Thanks Tom L. Pours dark reddish brown with a tan head. Roasted malts aroma with some faint hops in the background. Sweet with caramel and roasty notes, dry hoppy bitter finish. Medium-bodied. The beer is not in its best, feels stale, will be happy to try it again.
3.0 Bottle sample at a tasting at Dror S.’s place. Thanks Tom L. Dark brown with a big beige head. Aroma of stale hops, a bit piney, with roastiness and a bit of chocolate. Roasty flavor, a bit sweetish, with hints of chocolate and coffee and a hoppy bitterness, kinda stale. Medium-bodied. Not fresh enough.
4.1 Growler - pours brownish red with lots of beige head and faint lacing. Nose is pine, resin, caramel, and grapefruit. Flavor adds a slight metallic element. Quite bitter and a bit sweet. Long bitter finish. Medium body. A great value and full of flavor. I wish I could a keg of this. However, the neophyte in me wonders why this is a black ipa and not an imperial amber.
2.9 Poured a dark brown with a tan head. Aroma of roast malt and soft citrus hops. Medium body, flavour of sweet malt coffee and liquorice.
2.4 6/23/2010: Rogue Mogul Madness... Aroma: Pine, citrus, and earthy hops; toffee; similar to that of a Pacific Northwestern Style Red IPA... Appearance: Deep brown color with a thick beige-colored head of foam. Flavor: Bittersweet toffee maltiness (seems a bit scorched though) followed by peppery, earthy, floral, and resinous bitterness; fairly high bitterness level, but nothing seems to blend or work together; tastes more like an experimental homebrew; weird spiced characteristic; needs more hop flavor to balance the raw bitterness. Palate: Average. Overall: I knew I should have just avoided this beer. I specifically ignored it for my first pint, but then decided to get one anyway for my second pint... Stange brew; seems to be more malt than hops or bitterness; seems scorched; messy, distracted combination of flavors; not recommended... Draught at The Comet in Northside (Cincinnati, Ohio). Rating #351 for this beer.
3.6 9th July 2013 Chelmsford Beer Festival. Keg from Podge’s bar. Almost clear dark red beer. Good size pale tan head. Palate is light and a little dry. Good fine carbonation. Nice piney hops with a light spice. Very light citrus. Underpinned by lactose sweet caramel malt. Finishes minerally.
3.5 On tap at the beertemple. Thick creamy off white head. Clear deep burgundy pour. Lovely bitterness. Very good brew.
3.5 On tap at BrewDog Bar Stockholm. Fruity and hoppy smell with pine. Hoppy and malty smell. Nice bitterness. Malty IPA.
3.6 On-tap in the Rogue bar on Union St, San Fran: 3rd Feb 2013. 49ers had just blown the Super Bowl and I thought this would go down well too! It did, an off-white crown sat on top of a dark brown body that had a red hue to its look. Raosted/toasted malts in both the nose and taste: semi-sweet with a more bitter and dry finish, plenty of flavours to pick up within the brew ranging from coffee at the fore through to a mild citrus note towards the end. Interesting and a good start to six beer mini-session I had that evening.
3.8 Draught @ Beer Temple. More hazelnut than black IPA. Nice cinnamon head. Strong roasty-toasty caramel nose. Taste is tad bit sweet (considering the above), with a bitter finish. Like burnt espresso. Still quite pleasant.
3.5 On draught at Rogue. Dark brown color. Aroma of roasted malts and some citrus. Nice citrus hop kick melded with the dark malt flavor.
3.5 On tap at Beer Temple. Dark reddish-brown to black colour, off-white head. Aroma of pine, weed, liquorice, light coffee. Flavour is medium-sweet, coffee, liquorice, some weed, pine hoppy bitter finish. Light-bodied.
3.2 Draught: Medium sized, light beige creamy colored foamy head on top of a haY red ruby colored beer. Aromas of chalk, malts, amber malts, orange, toast and bread. Flavours of some toast, light liquorice, watery, some chalk, wood toast and bitters. Aftertaste of bitters, toast, malts, light herb and floral tones. Low carbo, soft watery mouthfeel, medium bodied and a light watery/creamy texture. Strange BIPA and a 92?
