3.5 Pours a surprisingly clear dark reddish brown with a good off-white head. Aroma is bitter hops, malt, raisins, non-sweet chocolate, spice, fruit, citrus, bread. Taste is malty, caramel, smooth, dark bitter chocolate, hoppy, spicy, fruity, citrus. Very different beer, don’t know why everyone seems to hate on it though, I think it is a solid beer, maybe not for the price however.
3.6 Pitch black with a thick beige head this soba beer has a pleasing fruity aroma with a dab of spice. The taste is decent chocolate, raisins, graham & soba spiciness. Quite a good solid black ale. I prefer Rogue’s regular soba ale but this black variant’s solid too.
2.6 65 cl bottle (5%) @ lusikka, BBE 12/2014 Aroma is rather odd, feels like some spicy soup. Some soy sauce, spices and toffee typical to English ales. Also hints of sweet licorice. Flavour has harsh malt, toffee, hay, licorice and weird spices. Finishes with some grapefruit-like hops. Not my thing.
2.9 650 ml bottle. Pours a black colour with a small off-white head. Aroma of toasted malts, dark chocolate and yeastiness. Flavour of harsh grainy malts, earthiness, mild saltiness, nuttiness and bread. Light bodied and thin mouthfeel. Not my thing.
2.9 650ml bottle Pours dark brown with a smooth head. Aroma of malts, spices, toffee, syrup, hints of roastiness and earthy notes. Taste is smooth, spicy and a bit weird with hints of earthy notes, tea, toffee, syrup and roastiness. Finish is roasty, a bit weird and spicy with hints of earthiness and syrup. A bit strange.
3.0 65 cl bottle (5.0% abv). Importer BBE 12/2014. Pours dark brown color with a large off-white head. Aroma doesn’t feel very fresh, some cardboard, hay, some weird herbal notes, mild hops and fruits. Sweet cola on the flavor, lemon, some malts and grass, gooseberries on the background. Quite weird. Not really my thing. 4323

Flavour: Medium dried fruits, raisins. Light roasty, burnt. Light grape. Medium bitterness, medium sweetness. Well balanced, Dry finish, lingering raisins and slight bitterness. Mouthfeel: Medium body, Medium-high carbonation. Overall: Very enjoyable! Can do with a bit more body to match the style, but the taste and aromas are amazing! 660 ml bottle, poured. 23. 3.6 on tap at Morimoto in Philadelphia; black color; mild, roasted malt aroma; smooth, dry, roasted malt flavor with wheat notes; nice, dry finish
3.1 Bottle .65. Black. Light roasty. Some soy, dark fruity. Quite light though. Cola, dry. Some bitters. Interesting drink. Hard to describe. -- bb
3.4 Bottle 65,5 CL. Pours black with brownish white lacing head. Notes of licorice, sushi vibe, milk chocolate. - beerbasher
2.8 Bottle. Maroon brown color, brown head. Aroma of herbal coca cola. Taste is slightly sour, a bit harsh, dry finish.
3.3 A nice black ale. Pours a deep black with a thick tan head. Smells of rice pudding and French toast with a bit of hops. Taste is quite crisp, with more rice cakes, chocolate malts and a slightly hoppy finish with a bit of a flour-like fizziness on your tongue.
3.4 nice beer, quite malty and heavily roasted (ie-lightly hopped for Rogue) with a dry light spiciness throughout.
3.4 5/VII/14 - 1Pt. 6Fl. Oz. bottle @ RBBSG III (Gent) - BB: n/a (2014-745) Thanks to Benzai for sharing the bottle! Clear dark purple brown beer, creamy beige head, little stable, non adhesive. Aroma: mocha, some caramel, sweet malts, some dried fruits. MF: soft carbon, medium body. Taste: caramel, some chocolate, sweet bitter hops, little roasted. Aftertaste: bitter, hoppy, bit malty, coffee touch. Not my thing.
3.0 Bottle from Beer Moth, Manchester. Dark brown pour with a fading tan head. Aroma had roasted malt, dark fruit choc and a little spice. The flavour was slightly sweet with more roasted malt, and notes of fruits and licorice. Some vague hoppage lurking in the shadows. Seemed a bit thin. Forgettable and sits on the average side of the street.
3.4 It pours with a thick, brown head. It is dark brown in color. It has coffee aromas mixed with nuts that has a spicy pop to it. The head is uneven and does provide some lacing as it recedes. It has a coffee and nut taste with other roasted flavors.
3.2 Bottle sample at Rogue Brewery tasting at Beer&Beyond, Tel Aviv. Dark brown with quickly diminishing light brown head. Heavy roasted malt aroma, coffee. Flavor of roasted malt, Japanese tea, notes of coffee, raisins. Feel like kind of lager. Light to medium body. Lack of alcohol. Roasted finish.
3.7 Bottle at RBSG 2014. Thx to everyone for sharing today’s bottles! APPEARANCE: clear brown beer, small unstable beige head. NOSE: sweet, alcohol, caramel. TASTE: caramel, little watery, chocolate, vanilla.
3.1 Bottle @ RBBSG, 2014. Thanks Benzai! Dark brown with beige foam. Soft carbonation. Light roasted with some sweet hints. Bit fruity. Rather flat, also metallic notes. Not very well balanced.
3.2 650 ml. bottle sampled @ RBBSG III. Thanks to Benzai! Dark amber. Nose is a bit odd, plain spaghetti / soba, light malt & caramel. Taste is weak, nondescript, soba / spaghetti, touch malt, caramel, faint paint thinner. Med, bit thinner body. Eh, I cannot make up my mind if this is an interesting concept or another one of Rogue’s inexplicable fallacies.
3.2 Sampled @ RBBSG III. Clear red-brown color, average sized beige head. Smell and taste malts, lightly grains, slightly roast, lightly bitter. Average to medium body and carbonation.
3.4 Dunkelbraunes Bier mit geringer Schaumkrone. Geruch stark nach geröstetem Malz, Karamell. Geschmack sehr röstmalzig, Karamall, nussig.
3.8 Pours a deep brown with thin tan head. Interesting aroma of roasted malts. Sweet and toasty flavor with mild bitterness balancing it out. The malts are super smooth almost creamy and somehow get the toasted flavor through without additional bitterness. Good stuff if you're in the mood for a dark ale that's not as bitter as an IPA and something thinner than a porter or stout.
3.2 Dark cola brown appearance with beige head. Aroma consists of caramel malts. Taste of toast, dark malt and nuts. Pretty smooth. Decent although not super exciting.
3.3 22oz bottle, on close out at Party Source. Cap lining has weird bubbles on it, probably an old bottle. CLear dark red color, kind of brown. Appears black from a distance. Good thin khaki head, leaves pretty solid lace; good head retention. Medium-plus body. Slightly chewy. Smooth, kind of soft, kinda chewy lighter carbonation. Lightly slick, lightly drying in the finish though. Good dark chocolate, notes of coffee in the aroma. Caramel malt. Pretty noodly, I think, but I don’t know if I’d have called that if I didn’t know it before hand. Moderate sweet taste, light spiciness. Very light bitter. Much better than expected, considering I expected this to be about 2+ years old. Drinking solid right now. Just a mild hint of oxidization in the nose. Kinda watery after a bit.
3.1 Pours dark, close to black. Dark roasted malts are the main elements of the aroma. Slightly nutty with hints of caramel. Flavour is nutty and malty as well, with just enough bitterness to balance. Roasty and toasty with a nicely lingering after taste. Tingly carbonation. I expected more though.
3.2 Aroma is a light roastiness paired with some floral hops. Taste is a roasty malt body with some creaminess. Finishes somewhat flat. Appearance is a dark body with a beige cream head that retains well.
2.7 650 ml bottle bought at YATA in Grand Century Place, Mong Kok. Clear black brown with no yeast sediments; One finger head with light beige foam which last for 1 minute; Moderate sticky lacing and slight bubbly carbonation; Fragrant sweet aroma of roasted dark malt, with dark chocolate, black coffee, cream, sugar, toffee, caramel, floral, and thin grass; Near zero sweet taste of roasted malt, with strong nuts, toast, light butter, light bread, soda water, non-sweet toffee and caramel, thin lemon and faint grass; Light body, watery palate; Mouth feel is non-sweet dark lager, very strong nuttiness and buttery toastiness, but otherwise pretty muted tastes for everything from bread, caramel to toffee. Like drinking a toast soda, quite plain all the way. Hmmm… Hoppiness is decent floral in slight grass in nose, and faint lemon grassy in taste. Faint bitterness in background with no finish; Fairly dry after taste. Very easy and nutty to mouth. Comments: This is like a non-sweet, toasty Schwarz: watery, ptetty good aroma, roasty and very nutty taste but with very few distinguishable characters. Very easy going, not bad to wash down meals and for hot Summer. Okay.
2.8 Rating #952 -February 5, 2014 0- Finally discounted these as they’ve been on the shelf since I got to @coopwinespirits. This was a deep coppery brown coloured pour with a mild tan foam that faded to a ring. Nose was teddy graham cookies, chocolate, toffee, and vegetable oil. Mild alcohol warmth and carbonation (well disguised at 6.6%) Taste is lagery, an earthy funky raspyness from the soba. mild toffee and caramel malt sweetness, but a load of noble hop grassiness. Finishes like an odd, light peppery porter. Not my bag, but certainly intriguing.
